Not sure if it is too helpful, but here is something cool related to space
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 14:07
that's pretty neat. It's like the planet generator in spaceEngine, but in flash I guess.

Is @JrodManU going to be able to take over the location art with @JesusVidal ? I never got a response yesterday?
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 15:40
I'm not sure. You don't have to do it all though, of course
I still like the idea of having different art styles at each location
Sara
@terpin

I've got the planets and a potential asteroid or two but I never heard anything back on that
did we figure that out, at all?
I know you've got someone on making random event sprites, so I didn't know exactly what random event backdrops we needed
I didn't want to draw a bunch of asteroids when someone else was making asteroid sprites and the screen got a little busy or weird looking/making it hard to find
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 16:10
We didn't have much luck with asteroid sprites, but I think we need to work on it some more. Random events right now are sprite-only; I hadn't thought about including a backdrop for the event. As for asteroid backdrops, I think we will just want to focus on one asteroid at a time, and for that we will need to choose which ones we are putting bases on.
I don't think it matters very much where we put the bases, but Ceres is an obvious choice. @MrNubbin , what asteroids would you put a base on?

Used the planet generator that I linked earlier
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 16:24
do you think we ought to use some of these generated bodies for asteroids or something?
JrodManU
@JrodManU
Apr 06 2015 16:25
It could work
Sara
@terpin
Apr 06 2015 16:27
are asteroids hard to draw?
JrodManU
@JrodManU
Apr 06 2015 16:28
The most annoying part would be trying to make them random
Sara
@terpin
Apr 06 2015 16:29
later on down the road, we could incorporate normal maps maybe to at least relight the same sprites and make them look random
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 17:57
random asteroids are do-able in canvas, but I think a couple different sprites will work for this first version.
I've managed to get some random debris encounters in the game now http://7yl4r.github.io/the-oregon-trajectory/
with a little luck and knowledge of material densities, this should allow for further progression in the game via fuel recovery.
I'd like this dynamic to be filled by asteroids rather than space-junk though. Space-junk might be similar, but you'd be more likely to find parts to sell for $ rather than fuel.

Man this is awesome. Good work on the sound @7yl4r. Sorry I dropped off a little bit with the contributions, AV kicked off again haha; making some real headway with it now
The satellite event threw me for a loop, too. I chose to ignore it and suddenly ran out of rations ;)
Also it looks like your location-distance function screwed the pooch a little bit too? I'm getting NaN on all of the calculations
for the next station distance
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 18:55
yeah, i noticed that.
Idk when or why it broke, hopefully it's an easy fix
oh wait... maybe I do know.

ok i'll give it a few tries. headed home from work now so i'll be back on in a bit to discuss
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 19:22
@BrianErikson, I just pushed a fix for that location-distance problem.
Uhh... did I somehow break github's network graph? It's not working for me... https://github.com/7yl4r/the-oregon-trajectory/network
Brian Erikson
@BrianErikson
Apr 06 2015 19:51
The network graph is working for me
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 19:52
it seems to have resolved itself, I think all github network graphs went down for a minute there, as I couldn't get it to work on either of my computers.

Hey sorry if this is a stupid question, but where do I put all the art when it's done? Is PNG format okay? And do you want me to remove the tiny earth from the moon screen? Thanks!
Oh and I'm still doing the little planet map, yeah?
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 20:03
there are no stupid questions! =P we're keeping the art here right now, but to get it there you need to use git. Just post a link or send me a file and I'll get it there for you if you don't want to deal with git.
png format is perfect i think.

Apr 06 2015 20:03
Is the potato agnostic?
Sara
@terpin
Apr 06 2015 20:03
It is agnostic
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 20:04
The tiny earth might be better kept in another layer.
Sara
@terpin
Apr 06 2015 20:04
okay
JrodManU
@JrodManU
Apr 06 2015 20:04
See, stupid question XD
Sara
@terpin
Apr 06 2015 20:04
I'm going to do up the planet map with individual planets, but it'll be layered. that way when we know where everything is going to be situated i'll set that up
THE POTATO IS NEVER A STUPID QUESTION!
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 20:05
sounds perfect on the planet map.
Sara
@terpin
Apr 06 2015 20:05
so mars, ceres and europa?
(are we still doing ceres?)
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 20:06
yes! I want to play up the asteroids as much as possible.
and I think Ceres is a good location for a mining base.
Sara
@terpin
Apr 06 2015 20:08
we might want to add vesta in there
but i'm not sure where vesta is situated
it's slightly smaller than ceres i think
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 20:08
maybe we could have two competing mining organizations, one on ceres and the other on vesta
Sara
@terpin
Apr 06 2015 20:10
i don't know, we'll figure it out though
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 20:10
I'm going to try to get some lore behind these locations going on the wiki so we can add assets, links, and files on each.
Anita
@akc2142
Apr 06 2015 20:29
i was just going to mention that
maybe as you're about to hit debris
JrodManU
@JrodManU
Apr 06 2015 20:30
Ooh
I could use those images
Sara
@terpin
Apr 06 2015 20:30
Yes you could, buddy
Anita
@akc2142
Apr 06 2015 20:31
Some notes: I'm getting a NaN for distance to the next station
health bar numbers flicker as it decreases which is kind of distracting. It doesn't appear to follow the health bar itself
it'd be helpful to be able to input a number for fuel and rations rather than use the click-method given the budget is rather large this could also save you from needing a reset button if you make a mistake as you currently need to refresh
every once in a while i'd get a negative ration which doesn't seem plausible
how is the health calculated?
Sara
@terpin

Getting some 404s for the following:
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 20:32
just resolved that first one. =)
second one is an ongoing issue
the health bar issue might be tough to address... maybe it just needs to be formatted to a set number of decimal points?
I agree on the shop inputs
can you open these as issues on the tracker?
Anita
@akc2142
Apr 06 2015 20:35
definitely
should i just start trying to dig in?
Tylar
@7yl4r

got it
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 20:37
the health calculation is a bit of a placeholder at the moment
the crew each has a health, and the ship health is meant to represent overall health of the crew
Anita
@akc2142
Apr 06 2015 20:39
ah ok, i'll take a look and familiarize myself with some stuff then see if i can fill in any holes
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 20:39
there's a lot of info on the wiki, though some of it may be out of date
I've tried breaking up the game into "scenes" aka "game modules" to reduce the learning curve for devs coming in, but I think I may have actually made things worse. Do you have experience with angular?
Anita
@akc2142
Apr 06 2015 20:41
some but it's minimal
i'm happy to acquaint myself
sorry, what wiki?
Anita
@akc2142
Apr 06 2015 20:42
jk just saw it
thanks
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 20:43
cool. just let me know if I can help.
Anita
@akc2142
Apr 06 2015 20:44
since content will rely on having more devs, have you thought about adding video snippets?
you can choose between a couple when you make a stop to refuel, etc.
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 20:45
I like the idea of including video snippets, but we don't have any animators at the moment.
Anita
@akc2142
Apr 06 2015 20:47
we might be able to find some open source or educational videos. just a thought.
Tylar

asteroid sprites are being such a pain; I'm starting to think we should just use a photo and forgo sprite-ification
JrodManU

Apr 06 2015 21:11
Alright
The sprite kinda looks like a grey potato XD

space potatoes to the rescue
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 21:13
maybe one of the asteroid sprites (with very low probability of encounter) can be a potato photo
sounds like a nice easter egg to me. =P
Anita
@akc2142
Apr 06 2015 21:14
if you just give it a grey filter, that would be AWESOME
Tylar
@7yl4r
Apr 06 2015 21:14
hahaha maybe they should all be potatoes. The resemblance is a bit uncanny.

one of the mini games should be: potato or asteroid?
