so... we need to talk about this
Sara

80% rule
deal with it a lot in startup-landia
basically they're not an educational game and it's pretty different from what I played in the demo
(from oregon trajectory, I mean)
are you worried they'll come after you or something? Because they probably can't, since this project predates theirs. And there are literally a million oregon trail style games out there ^^

Agreed. It's actually a bit reassuring that they got 100k in crowd funding.
I'm not worried at all, no.

good!

Jun 09 2015 17:38
I'd like to give it a play and see what we can learn from it.

sorry i haven't been around much lately, i've been working a ton
I can audit it, make notes on GUI, game elements, etc

Jun 09 2015 17:39
No worries, I've been in other projects too.

did you put the nasa award on your resume ;) do eet!

I've managed to dig up some official play testers and have been thinking a little, but that's about it.
Sara
@terpin
Jun 09 2015 17:40
Well the game in its current state can only go so far
but it's honestly a really good base
and we're not constrained by the nasa competition rules anymore

I've been thinking more and have decided I'd like to focus my efforts on properly recreating the gameplay of the original before straying any further.
Once we get that done I think we'll have a pretty easy time building up a community which will help guide our future decisions.

people really love that format of game
do you want to keep it strictly educational?
Tylar
@7yl4r
Jun 09 2015 17:45
Well, only as educational as the first one
Which was not terribly educational really.
Sara
@terpin
Jun 09 2015 17:46
too true
well there are other "trail" games that weren't educational at all
like organ trail
(i fucking love that game but i can never aim the gun right)
Tylar
@7yl4r
Jun 09 2015 17:47
I'm willing to branch off in whatever direction seems best. The educational direction just seems like the best direction currently.
Sara

We need to do some comparative market research
Look at the last five crowdfunded 'trail games, for example
see what features they have, what they have in common with ours and what's different

I'm sure you're right, I'm just too developer-minded I think. I'm working with some more business-minded guys who might be of use pushing this forward in the future though
Sara
@terpin
Jun 09 2015 17:52
No I understand
I think developers work of a "if you build it they will come" philosophy
where usually it's the other way around ;)

I definitely get that. My mind just shuts down when it comes to business stuff until I get distracted by another programming problem.

I'm that way too

Jun 09 2015 17:58
alright, well. I've already promised to put in a webdev favor for someone so I'll see if I can get some market analysis and business plan for this game in return.
Sara
@terpin
Jun 09 2015 17:58
That's why you guys are good programmers!
Well you know that's what I do for a living right?
Tylar
@7yl4r
Jun 09 2015 17:59
I guess I assumed that b/c your art was so badass that you did game art for a living.
Sara
@terpin
Jun 09 2015 17:59
I do that too
I'm a copywriter and messaging consultant for startups and big corps

Oh nice.
Sara
@terpin
Jun 09 2015 18:03
I gotta work on a couple paintings for a card game, but after that I can do a quick audit of that game and do a little research on what's getting crowdfunded in the 'trail category
Tylar
@7yl4r
Jun 09 2015 18:04
sounds good to me!
Realistically I think we'd want to aim a crowdfunding campaign at 4mo from now minimum (to give me time to build up the demo game)
Sara
@terpin
Jun 09 2015 18:05
Oh definitely, but you can't get moving in the right direction if you don't know what you need to be doing
what people are looking for in this kind of game probably isn't going to be changing all that much
Tylar
@7yl4r
Jun 09 2015 18:06
I suppose that's true, yeah. So far I've been just prioritizing what playtesters report, but it's not quite that easy for developing features.
Sara
@terpin
Jun 09 2015 18:09
Well the last thing you want to do is waste time on features nobody wants or ones that just won't work with the game, I get it
Tylar
@7yl4r
Jun 09 2015 18:16
Yep. The main thing I've noticed people mention when talking about the Oregon trail is all the various ways you can die, so my next big feature might be a overhaul of the player health system and some generated death scenarios.
Sara
@terpin
Jun 09 2015 18:17
sounds like we need to audit the original oregon trail features too
Tylar
@7yl4r
Jun 09 2015 18:18
Probably, yes.
Sara
@terpin
Jun 09 2015 18:20

Can you open up a new task and assign me:

Audit Original Oregon Trail Game
Audit Orion Trail Kickstarter Demo
Research successful 'trail kickstarter games in the last 12 months, and failed 'trail kickstarter games in the last 12 months

Tylar
@7yl4r
Jun 09 2015 18:20
would be happy to, yes.
Sara
@terpin
Jun 09 2015 18:21
K, it's going to be a crazy week and I don't want to forget. I know I'll be able to do the first two things in the next week, but it's going to take some time to compile a report on both failures and winners
Tylar
@7yl4r
Jun 09 2015 18:22
No rush, I'm taking my sweet time with the features and no one has complained yet. =P
Sara
@terpin
Jun 09 2015 18:22
haha okay ^^
