I know that he's aware of it, he said he couldn't do anything because the download portals (filehorse etc) have given him a deal and he can't influence what they piggyback onto the binaries...it's in this chats history

Im also aware that he always wanted to monetize the app bause of the different costs
what I find strange is its seems like he still operates the website
since the builds on circle CI go to some AWS S3
and my guess is that the updates.mfd.com go fetch from an EC2 instance
which take the builds from S3
meaning he still owns the pipeline
and if you check the "official" website on github and the builds update urls
then point to the same url that serves malware

since I downloaded the builds from github and they are fine
but the infested builds are served by https://updates.messengerfordesktop.com/download/mirror/installcore/latest?platform=win32
as you can see the build name doesnt match whats on github

other topic - when launching with an active VPN, MFD just does not connect. anyone experienced that?

I remember an issue reporting that problem
its strange since if the VPN is configured at the network stack level it should go smoothly
