    Do you mean the sum of the durations of state event behaviors for one subject?
    Caleb
    @Caleb__Hubbard_twitter
    correct. I am looking at landing behavior of flies and want to see what proportion of subjects land on a particular food source for a set period of time
    I want to see what the length of each state event is
    BORIS_behav_obs
    @BORIS_behav_obs_twitter
    Why do not use the time budget analysis?
    Caleb
    @Caleb__Hubbard_twitter
    Doesn't this just show the number of occurrences, total duration, duration mean duration std dev ect or is there a way to see individual occurrences
    As well I have been running into some issues with the new update where when I input video the ethogram box and the subjects box disapear

    hi, maybe exporting the events as aggregated events will help you to access the single events

    Hello everyone. Yesterday i logged a whole lot of events(+2000), sadly somehow only halve of them got saved into the observation. I did however export a datafile of all the events at the end of the day yesterday. Is it possible to import this file with all the event points into the observation? Thank you for your time.
    Caleb
    @Caleb__Hubbard_twitter
    I also am having an issue. Whenever I upload a media file into BORIS the ethogram and subject file boxes disappear and Ii have not been able to figure out how to get them back. They are there prior to starting the observation
    BORIS_behav_obs
    @BORIS_behav_obs_twitter
    @ABoelhouwer it is not possible to re-import the exported events into an observation. However I think it is not so hard (with a good text editor) to write a valid BORIS project file based on your exported events. Did you understand why only half of recorded events were saved?
    @Caleb__Hubbard_twitter Hi, can you open an issue on github with details about version, OS, etc and a reproducible sequence of actions that give bug?
    ABoelhouwer
    @ABoelhouwer
    @BORIS_behav_obs_twitter No i do not know why the events were not saved. I have auto-save enabled. Is there documentation on a text template for a BORIS project file that i can edit?
    BORIS_behav_obs
    @BORIS_behav_obs_twitter
    @ABoelhouwer Just create a new project with your ethogram, make a simple observation of few events, save it and open it with a good text editor (like Geany or Notepad++). The BORIS project file format is JSON

    hello, I have just started to use BORIS and I am a bit struggling with the windows
    to be more specific: the widget with the etho-thing is too small, it shows only one code. Even the video is very small, I cannot grab the arrow to make it bigger. Any suggestions?
    BORIS_behav_obs
    @BORIS_behav_obs_twitter
    You should find a slider on the right side of the ethogram widget to enlarge it. What OS are you using'
    Mara Allodi
    @mara_allodi_twitter

    I wonder if there is a video about this? I get an image of the enlarger but just för a very short time and I cannot grab it , it disappears very quickly

    @BORIS_behav_obs_twitter
    Hi, what BORIS version are you using?
    Mara Allodi
    @mara_allodi_twitter
    The last one, actually I managed to move and enlarge the windows and I hope that they will stay there when I open the observation again

    Hi, I read the user guide but I am not sure to understand the function time offset added or subtracted from the recorded time. How does it work exactly ? For example, I don't wanna play the first 5 min of my videos, can this function help me to do this ?
    (also, just as a note, there is a mistake in the pdf user guide downloadable from the website. The section ' Exporting events data' is actually replaced by a copy of the section 'Observations'. Just to let you know)
    Estelle MEAUX
    @esmea_gitlab
    Another question, when I export the observations on a .csv format, the time is in seconds, while in my Preferences it's set on hh:mm:ss format. How do I fix this ?
    BORIS_behav_obs
    @BORIS_behav_obs_twitter
    @esmea_gitlab offset time: let me give you an example. if the offset time (of observation) is set to +12:00:00, the time for coded events will be the media time + 12:00:00. You can use it if you use an automatic video recording system that starts at noon every day for example. Make some tests before to start coding.
    @esmea_gitlab user guide PDF: Thanks, I will check this.
    BORIS_behav_obs
    @BORIS_behav_obs_twitter
    @esmea_gitlab the csv always contains the time in seconds. You can easily convert it to HH:MM:SS format using Excel or LibreOffice Calc with the following formula:
    =TEXT(CELL_REF/24/60/60, "hh:mm:ss")

    Hi
    I am using BORIS to encode behaviour of few humans in a video. More than 1 raters have rated/observed/encoded the video on BORIS. Now what is the significance of interval time in IRR (Cohen's Kappa)? I can't find any documentation about this.
    BORIS_behav_obs
    @BORIS_behav_obs_twitter
    Hi, sorry, I was away for few days. The interval time (in seconds) means that the 2 observations are compared at every time interval for agreement or disagreement.

    Hello - I've been successfully using boris to code behavioral videos ( .avi), but today am trying to set up a second computer for my techs to use. On the three computers available (all running Windows 10, 64-bit), I have the same problem - the videos appear green and static. Has anyone else run into this problem before? They also showed green in VLC, so I followed some online troubleshooting directions and disabled the hardware acceleration in VLC. Now they play fine in VLC, but still are green in boris. I've updated Boris to the newest release (7.5.3) and updated VLC too (3.0.6). I would appreciate any advice! Thank you.

    Hello Anna, it is not possible for now to disable the VLC hardware acceleration in BORIS. I am working on this problem and I will let you know when it will be possible. Regards

    Hi! thanks a lot for this amazing software, it's been extremely useful. I have one question/suggestion regarding the timing of events, in our project we need to link the live observations to the time of day (we use tablets and they are working a treat!) and it has proved very difficult to do that with BORIS because the timings are in time from the start of the observation and it seems that the timing of the start of the observation (day month year, hour minutes seconds) is not recorded, or is it? if not, would there be a place somewhere to include this information? for instance, I think it could be useful to have the precise time appear every time you press the start live obs and stop live obs in the list of events. That's just a suggestion but being able to make the link between the observation and when it precisely occurred during the day is essential I think.

    @BORIS_behav_obs_twitter
    Hi, thank you for the suggestion! For now you can use the offset value when you create the observation or use the "Shift time of selected events" function after your coding. Regards
    nclaidiere
    @nclaidiere
    Hi, thanks for your answer and I hope the suggestion will be useful. Just to be clear, shifting the time is great but we don't know by which amount (i.e. there is no easy way to know precisely the time it took between pressing the "new observation" button and the "start observation" button. Our solution for now is to plan in advance when we will press the start button (say 14:05:00). Anyway, thanks again.

    Hi, I’ve got what may be a dumb question here but I was doing some scoring on a very simple etho-gram and I’m having troubles figuring out what the inter-event intervals mean/std dev. are measuring. I was working with a super simple ethogram recording state events when a fish was on the right or left side of a tank and one single point event marking what side the fish started on. The inter-event interval for the left side is nearly identical to the average duration for the right side and vice versa but I can’t seem to pin down where the discrepancy is coming from. Any help with what the stat is actually measuring would be appreciated! Thanks! :)

    @nclaidiere Hi, I will include the feature you proposed. There is only a problem at midnight when the time will pass from 23:59:59.999 to 0:00:00.000, the events recorded after midnight will be sorted before the previous one. A possible solution can be to increment the time like 25:00:00.000.
    @JeffDeminchuk_twitter Hi,
    can you send me a sample of your project by email? Seethe about page on the BORIS web site
    nclaidiere
    @nclaidiere
    fantastic thank you! there will be no observations for me at midnight so that won't be a problem for me. Please let me know when you have found the time to include the feature. Again, many thanks.

    Hi, I just downloaded BORIS thinking I would give it a try but the "events list" widget doesn't show up on my screen making everything more difficult. It still records the events, but I can't see them. I am using mac OS 10.13

    @xortizross_twitter Hi, try to close BORIS and delete the config file. See the documentation for details: https://boris.readthedocs.io/en/latest/#configuration-file
    If you are using macOS avoid to use the fullscreen mode.

    the only ".boris" file I can find is the project I created. I made a new project and I still have the same problem. When I right click on one of the other "widgets" a list comes up. Events is not checked and is greyed out so I cannot interact with it to check it. I have since decided to dowload Boris on one of my lab's windows computers and it has been working fine, but I am disappointed I cannot run it on my macbook. I also tried uninstalling it and re-installing the most updated version and I still had the same problem.

    @xortizross_twitter the widgets management is a little bit tricky on MacOS...
    from a terminal type:
    ls /Users/YOUR_USERNAME/.boris
    this file should exists. You can remove it (close BORIS before) with:
    rm /Users/YOUR_USERNAME/.boris
