Heyo
What does anyone think about the new open war cards...? They sound like they could be fun :smile:
DeathKorps
@DeathKorps
Jul 09 2017 05:21
I think they're pretty neat honestly
Simon Porter
@FarseerVeraenthis
Jul 09 2017 05:23
Yeah it could be groovy, I think I'll get some next week from my flgs
DeathKorps
@DeathKorps
Jul 09 2017 05:24
Definitely would remove a lot of the hassle of pre game planning
DeathKorps
@DeathKorps
Jul 09 2017 05:34
Anyone know what time the Krieg files might be ready for Battlescribe?
Simon Porter
@FarseerVeraenthis
Jul 09 2017 06:20
Good question, I think they've been released so it's up to appspot...
DeathKorps
@DeathKorps
Jul 09 2017 06:21
Ah
I've got an escalation league coming up and it'd be handy to have my army on Battlescribe

@Thairne
Jul 09 2017 11:35
Open war cards sound nifty. But they add a LOT of RNG into the game.. which we do not really need that much more off imo
Will Pattison
@GenWilhelm
Jul 09 2017 13:14
the sudden death cards sound interesting to me. the idea of having a vastly under powered force to has a very specific objective to do sounds like it could be a lot of fun
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 13:42
It works well in AoS
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 13:44
They're just intended for open play though aint they?
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 13:45
yarr
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 13:45
i guess people must play open play but I just can't wrap my head around why they would
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 13:46
Not everybody is a tournament player
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 13:46
no one in my group would ever want to play open vs me.... cos i own as many models as all of them put together
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 13:46
So tell them to join up
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 13:47
its nowt to do with tournament play, 99% of the playerbase don't play tournaments. It's down to having a fair game and without using points I don't see how that could ever happen
I could see plenty of people using PL for simplicity but even then, depending on the armies there can be quite a big points difference.
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 13:49
Not everybody gives a damn about points.
Not everybody is obsessed about having what you view as a "fair" game.
I've played a ton of power imbalanced games because we came up with a scenario that matches it. Could be a way to handicap yourself against a new player
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 13:51
Well thats what narrative play is for
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 13:52
Could also view Open Play as an any-size Apocalypse game
Could be multiple players at once, just bringing a handful of units to slug it out
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 13:53
Yeh
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 13:53
No FoC also in it
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 13:56
It just feels a little odd to me for them to bring out things like cards for a play mode I can't imagine many people playing
Those cards could have be great for narrative play i reckon
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 13:56
Or, for the cards, just don't use the instant death ones if you don't want to. Want to use them to randomize deployment zone, the Macguffin, and twists
Will Pattison
@GenWilhelm
Jul 09 2017 13:56
excatly ^, play the way you want to
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 13:56
Useful for TOs coming up with missions
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 13:56
Those cards actually looked useful even for matched play rather than rolling for mission, deployment etc. drawing cards would be cool
cos then you could have the cards down infront of you so no one forgets the mission and stuff
Will Pattison
@GenWilhelm
Jul 09 2017 13:57
the instant death was only designed for one side having 2x power of the other
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 13:57
I'd love if they included additional cards in codexes
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 13:57
but they are selling them simply as a means of balancing open play a little
they could have tweaked them a bit and given them wider appeal
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 13:58
Not really, they're options to make Open Play interesting. Not abotu balancing
well, the sudden victory could be
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 13:58
i was just quoting what they said on their stream when they used them :)
they did also say to make it more interesting too ofcourse
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 13:59
For expanding though, an objective, deployment, twist, ruse, and underdog cards could be easily done for each faction
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 14:00
yeh good point
I'm quite a fan of having cards for stuff; even with only 3 psychic spells (4 with smite) I'd still like some cards for them :)
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 14:00
five cards, one each. Just shuffle in when using the decks, or select some or all of them without randomization to make things interesting
Troy Graber
@tag8833
Jul 09 2017 14:01
Yeah the cards aren't really for open play. Nobody really plays open play except for learning games and Apoc. But they will get used alot in "narrative" aka "casual" play.
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 14:01
That was kinda my point though
they ARE for open play
thats how they're selling them
"A simple and fun way to set up games of Warhammer 40,000, Open War cards take all the indecision and doubt away and let you get on with your gaming. A deck of 48 cards split into 5 types, they help you determine the deployment, objectives and special rules for Open Play games."
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 14:03
Given the print time needed to produce the cards to get them ready to ship, this has likely been in production since before 8th launched
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 14:03
yeh i would assume so
I hope they tested them better than the tactical objectives
They have objectives like the one where you draw a second objective and you have to score it with your warlord, and the warlord can be the only unit to score it so things like hold the line can't be done with it
and the defend objective ones say 2 turns... but a "turn" is defined in the rules as a player turn
game turns are now "battle rounds"
so if you draw it, you score it the end of your opponents turn?
dont think that was intended
Will Pattison
@GenWilhelm
Jul 09 2017 14:07
i think the idea of that one is your opponent has a chance to stop you
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 14:07
The defend objective one says "at the end of two consecutive turns" meaning you have to hold it through your turn and your opponent's
Meaning you have to DEFEND the objective while your opponent attacks. Hence the word "Defend"
Troy Graber
@tag8833
Jul 09 2017 14:08
They are selling power levels for narrative play, and our campaign attempting to use them already blew up, and is switching to points next round. Power level is for casual play, and aren't going to get used for narrative play very much.
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 14:08
yes but you would then score it at the end of your opponents turn
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 14:08
@tag8833 your experiences are not the be-all end-all of the 40k world. If you have people who are just interested in exploiting point totals and cheesing it up, it WILL fail.
... and?
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 14:09
The 7th ed supremacy cards had basically the same objective but it was always assumed you scored it at the end of your second turn in which you held it
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 14:09
Well, with this if you hold it in your opponent's turn, and you check it during yours and you completed the criteria, then guess what? You score it.
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 14:09
at which point in your turn?
the start? so you draw a second card?
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 14:10
Read your book
Under Achieving Tactical Objectives
don't assume you know how the system works based off of 7th information
Troy Graber
@tag8833
Jul 09 2017 14:10
Player turns are now "turns". Game turns are now "rounds"
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 14:10
i dont assume anything
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 14:10
No shit
Ok, well read that section to me, and tell me when it scores.
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 14:10
if you do it at the end of you turn then you will have held it for 2 battle rounds
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 14:11
I misspoke on mine
Just read the first sentence under "Achieving Tactical Objectives"
Troy Graber
@tag8833
Jul 09 2017 14:11
So hold an objective for 2 turns means your turn then your opponents. Basically they get a chance to knock you off it.
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 14:11
i dont need to, i know when it happens
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 14:12
Then why are you saying you don't think it's intended to score at the end of your opponent's turn when the objective literally says "Defend," implying you have to, oh, I dunno, defend the objective?
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 14:12
sigh
i draw the card in my turn, other player has a turn to knock me off it, at the end of my next turn i score it
yes?
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 14:13
No.
Why do you think I've been telling you to read the fucking book
Here, I'll even paste it in for you. "At the end of every turn (you and the enemy's), you must check to see if you have achieved any of your active Tactical Objectives"
Meaning that yes, you do check at the end of your opponent's turn. I misspoke earlier, I can admit it. You DO score at the end of your opponent's turn, not just your own
James
@skonk
Jul 09 2017 14:14
ok so i missed the exact same shit you did
so how about less of the "fucking" attitude?
cartag
@cartag
Jul 09 2017 14:14
Don't tell me you dont' need to read shit then because you "know when it happens"
I swear a lot, deal with it.
Actually, I'll just step out. I have little patience for anybody these days. I'll be back when the CSM codex comes out. Bugs will last until then.
Only astartes and chaos though

Jul 09 2017 19:33
Q. Are there any restrictions on which Chapter I can choose
when replacing the <Chapter> Faction keyword on datasheets
within this book?
A. Yes. You cannot choose for any of these units to be
from the Legion of the Damned, Grey Knights or
Deathwatch Chapters. They can be from any other
Chapter though, including Blood Angels, Dark
Angels and Space Wolves.
Void Dragon be praised!

@DeathKorps
Jul 09 2017 20:55
What all did you get?
tekton
@tekton
Jul 09 2017 20:59
The exclusive land raider/rhino, all the "exclusive" models from bugman's bar and forgeworld, an inquisitor (rex?), secutarii bits, Shas'o R'alai, a couple GK Dreadnoughts, a bunch of Dreadnought arms for my old ones that are missing a ton of weapons from "helping" people over the years, a piranaha, GK dreadknight, and ordered a bunch of stuff they were out of since it's free shipping anywhere in the world from their store
I had been throwing change and gift money in a box for years; converted it to pounds before I left...worked out ok

@genwilhelm I'm trying to resist the urge to mail forgeworld with a very pithy response about the Chapter section
because they commented at the end of 7th that dreads and transports were just fine for DW >:(
