Thank you. Great input.
@tekton I thought of these Guidelines as more Author oriented, i.e. not really for end users. Most of them are probably incomprehensible for non-author people. But it might be worth including indeed.

So.... I had 3 Custodes bikes for my army but wanted to be able to also run a Shield Captain on bike too. So I bought another box of them... but before I even unsealed them, I got the chance to buy 6 already built custodes bikes (primed gold too) for a little cheaper than I could get them new so I got them. So..... do I try to exchange the unsealed box or shall I just build them on the off chance I want to run 12 ?
OftKilted
@OftKilted
Mar 11 2018 01:05
@skonk That depends on whether you have something that is higher priority than a “off chance”
And how well the store likes you
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 01:06
I'll probably pick up the tau dex so I could potentially use em to pay for that
My local store would likely take em back at full price if i put the money into something else there
but im not so skint as to NEED to do it, i can just buy the dex
i may just be bored and want to build something tho

I feel as though Facebook should be considered an "official channel". It's run by GW employees. It's the closest thing we have to an open channel of communication with GW.
Also can someone please explain to me why we still indulge in the anachronistic and masochistic practice of "Daylight Savings Time"?
CrusherJoe @CrusherJoe and his people, being Irish and pale of skin and easy of burn, parted ways with the sun long ago -- and he doesn't like being forced to endure more of it in the evening, the time that by rights should be for him and his...

@CrusherJoe we don’t really count FB because it’s not run by rules monkeys, but social monkeys; they’ve mostly stopped answering questions anyway, but when they still did they were known for issuing wrong or contradictory statements.

@CrusherJoe if they had made more of an effort to keep the Facebook responses in line with the rules I would like to use it, but until then it probably needs to be a reference but not source of truth
I'd feel more comfortable as well if they could actually play the game with the right rules on the weekly streams...

....okay, so, wow. Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color is my new favorite thing.
I'll put some pics up tomorrow so you can see what a difference it makes
But you can search for it on the 'tube and find many videos on it. It's really as good as they say it is.

@amis92 What I did in earlier editions when something was fishy and I still included it I added a RAI warning to remind ppl that it is fishy.
I think doing that would alleviate some concerns... those that dont want it can ignore it and tournament players get reminded on their list that they shouldnt do it

Thats pretty much the reason we tag Index stuff as index and beta stuff as beta
because then it jumps out on lists as (this could be a problem)
got to be someone's first 40k game yesterday
i took a really underpower eldar lisst and had a fun back and forth 5 turns

@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:06
Just in case you think it's my anti-xeno stance causing this, I would like to personally take a cattle prod to every asshat that wants to take some obscure Index buildout for a Ministorum Priest too
And in case you're wondering (you're not, but in case someone was) I like to practice what I preach. My metal Company Commander model is holding an Inferno Pistol. You do see me wrangling rules and desperately clinging to a 3rd edition wargear list trying to make him a better model.
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:08
I dont think you have an anti-xenos stance
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe

"You don't see me" that is. Damn it fingers, why betray me now?
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:09
What I do think is that you have a very harsh view of anyone who plays the game differently to how you think it should be played
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:09
I play competitive 40K mostly.
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:10
Which is why you experience so much of what you consider to be wrong
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:10
My harsh view comes from this very phrase: "Mah cheese! Ah've gots ta have mah cheese!"
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:10
Competitive play is always going to be where to find the people who will want to eeek out every lasty bit of potential from their army
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:10
I agree
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:10
and the sort of people who will skirt the edge of whats reasonable
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:10
But there are limits to that
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:11
but in the end; as long as it's not actually against the rules then they aint doing owt wrong
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:11
And as far as I'm concerned, once a Codex is out, that's all you get.
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:11
Sadly, you dont make that decision; games workshop do
and they have put documentation out there that says its not the case
you may not like it, i may not like it, most people infact may not like it
but you cant blame the players for doing it
cos it's GW who gave the permission
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:12
Players have a choice in what they choose to do
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:12
they have a choice to use the tools GW provided
and when it comes to winning tournaments people will use the hell of those tools if they think it makes them more likely to win
The only real fix is to keep petitioning games workshop to fix the bullshit
luckily we actually have a way to contact them now and they assure us they read the shit we send
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:13
I believe very strongly that in the case of Tau codex there is a crystal clear intent that (we'll use the obvious case) that the Stim Injector is no longer valid as a piece of wargear you pay army construction points for and give to multiple models.
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:14
I agree that the Tau issue is perhaps the clearest and most obvious "this is not intended" scenario yet but....
We really can't guess GW's intentions; because we have done before, thinking it was obvious, common sense etc.. only to have an FAQ prove us wrong
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:15
As such the Index entry has been overwritten by the Codex -- the Stim Injector has been balefired from existence as far as it being a piece of wargear is concerned.
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:15
Not according to GW's own publications
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:15
Actually what we have is a situation without precedent
This particular case isn't covered in the Designer's Commentary
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:16
it kinda is
What hasn't been done before is wargear converted into some other mechanic
but in the end this falls right into the category of wargear in the index not being in the codex
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:16
40K is a permissive ruleset -- does it give you permission to use wargear that is no longer in a codex entry for wargear? Yep, sure dues.
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:17
Then you apply logic
and its clear its not what they intend
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:18
What it does not do is give permission to pull some end-run-around bullshit to try and overcome a fundamental change in how an army gets a certain bonus/effect.
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:19
It gives permission to use wargear from the index that does not exist in the codex
This case falls in to that
there really is no way around it
but all this is moot
cos in 3 weeks time (2 weeks after release) this will be FAQ'd
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:19
Your stim injectors got nerfed. Yanked. Yoinked. Gone. Outta there. They're a strat, and you get to use it once a turn.Suck it up and stop trying to take it any other way.
For the last week I've been hoping beyond hope that Savior Protocols would become a strat. It didn't. So I gots to suck it up, too. As the Rolling Stone so eloquently put: "You can't always get what you want."
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:21
YOu really REALLY do just hate Tau for the sake of it you know
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:21
I really really despise Tryhard Tau
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Mar 11 2018 17:21
@Joe relax your anus man. The FAQ in two weeks will put it to bed, just as it has both other instances of DC abuse that were not intended
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:21
If part of a game causes you to generate this much hate then you should probably look for a different hobby
Tau were noncompetitive in 7th ed, they have been utter garbage for the entire duration of 8th edition and yet you go on about them like they're the most overpowered gamebreaking shit you've ever seen
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:23
There has been exactly ONE Tau player that I've known and played against that wasn't a Diehard Tryhard. He brings little tri-fold pamphlets with him to every tournament inviting you to join "The Greater Good". It's hilarious and he's an excellent player and a good guy.
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:24
Perhaps then, since apparently every Tau player you meet falls into this category you've created... then maybe this is YOUR issue and not theirs?
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Mar 11 2018 17:25
the DC is a necessary thing because of GW legal getting involved in what codexes can contain. As someone who was partly pulled toward eldar because Autarchs were fundamentally "My Dude" along with the glorious painting opportunites after painting way too much black, red and silver, having the index continues to keep that peice of things alive
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:26
@skonk possibly, quite possibly. But I doubt it. I am very much a live and let live guy. Maybe -- and I am willing to consider this -- it's just the area I live in/local meta.
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Mar 11 2018 17:27
It sounds like it tbh
CrusherJoe @CrusherJoe considers this.
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:27
Tau were my first army right
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Mar 11 2018 17:28
all 3 tau guys in my local are some of the better opponents i can face, after 8th flushed out the two other tourney-only taudar shitters
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:28
Bought off one of the people in what would end up being my local little gaming group
After I bought them....
they start going on about how I will probably win most games cos Tau are OP
and oh dont buy that model or this model cos it's OP etc
I spent the next 6 months losing almost every game I played and assuming I was shit at the game
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:29
Okay if I'm being completely honest with myself it could be related to the fact that in 7th edition Tau played an army that was diametrically opposed to the kind of army I used to love to play -- full assault. Between army-wide Interceptor, Ripple Fire, Nova Charge and shared overwatch they really took a dump on my fun. :)
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:29
I must be cos Tau are OP
everyone says so
Then I start playing CSM, universally regarded at the time as being shit
and I win every game i play with them for weeks
then I get interested in the tournament scene and realise from reading all the results that Tau were actually a steaming turd
and the view that they were OP basically came down to a single origin... of Matt at fucking miniwargaming
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:30
You know that Taudar shitters you just mentioned? A lot of them went over to play Tryhard Guard
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Mar 11 2018 17:30
with the sole exception of riptide wing they pretty much were
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:31
This ^^^^^
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:31
Riptide wing was the best thing the army had
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:31
But Codex: Riptide was ridiculously OP
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:31
But actually go read what the riptide wing formation did
and it didnt actually do all that much
and again, didn't win anyone any major events
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:32
...except for Taudar shitters (I love that phrase) to pack 6 god damned Riptides into every army.
It got so bad I make a list (never built it) called "I Don't Want Friends, Just Allies" that was Wolfstar with a Riptide Wing
"if you can't beat 'em, join 'em."
But then I looked in the mirror and realized what I was about to become...deleted the list and hadn't thought about it until today.
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:33
Its all down to context for me
I think people should be able to play anything they want
and i dont think GW should ban the shit out of everything just cos people whine
cos the reality is, a very vocal MINORITY are the ones who complain
happy people stay silent
but the list you play should be tailored to the type of game you intend to use it in
so dont rock up with a tourny list for a friendly game
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:34
Oh I agree
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:35
and dont rock up to a tourny with some fluffy casual list and cry when you get yer ass handed to you
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:35
I've told many people, many times: "If it's in your book, bring it."
Neither do it
I love smashmouth 40k
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:35
and if you want to play a friendly with some strong stuff it in, let people know in advance so they know its coming
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:35
That, too
We just created the Texas Championship Circuit
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:36
but for me thats just like... a common courtesy
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:36
Common courtesy, not being an asshat, actually caring if your opponent has a good time
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:37
aye
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:37
A guy approached me for a game a few weeks ago. I had brought a tournament list I was testing. I had other stuff. I let him see both lists and choose what he wanted to play against.
To do otherwise is to fall into the Tryhard category
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:38
Sometimes is amusing to play against someones insane list just to see how much they smash you
whats not fun is when getting smashed is a shock to ou
you^
but.....
i think thats partially on us too
if you make an effort to be at least aware of what other armies can do then you wont be hit by the shock of what some units can put out
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:38
He'd brought his tournament army and that's what he chose to play against. It was a fantastic, hard fought victory. Bloody with dead piles on both sides.
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:39
I win games sometimes just cos I know the other guys army... sometimes better than they do
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe

You guys ever hear of Nick Rose?
He's the guy that invented the original Leafblower list back in 5th ed. Won the Adepticon Gladiator with it.

ah
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:40
I played a team tournament with him once
I learned more about 40K in that tournament from him than in any other instance
He would look at the table, predict where our opponents would be and what they would be trying to do 2, 3 turns in advance
It was almost scary how accurate his predictions were
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:41
I only do little local events and even thats quite new to me but as a rules nerd I see so many mistakes made its unreal

i didnt have the heart so i just played him
spoke to him after the game about it tho
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:43
I'm a TO, and I kinda have to know the rules, and discuss them with other TOs all over the country so there's some consistency to rulings
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:43
ive been pushing my local place to be more proactive in their events
checking lists and that
so now they do spot checks and ask people to make sure they always have a hard copy of their lists

Mar 11 2018 17:44
I also find myself being asked about rules by the other plays all the time even when im in the event myself
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:44
Yay to that. You're doing good work there.
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:44
ive become known for knowing the rules
but its hard sometimes not to stick my nose in to other peoples games
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:45
....isn't it, though?
Oh man
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:45
in that 1k event, a game right at the side of me... a guy had a flyer that i knew didnt have hover mode
and he had put it quite close to the side of the table
pointing off the edge
but at such an angle that in his next turn he wouldnt be able to actually keep it on the board
I knew the guy he was playing against wouldnt even notice
and I reckon the guy with the flyer would just turn it more than 90 degrees without thinking about it
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:46
Oh man

What did you do?
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:46
im not a judge or owt so its down to them
again tho, i mentioned it to them both AFTER the game
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:46
True.
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:46
individually tho
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:47
That's the best way to do it when you're not a TO
As a TO I try not to get involved unless asked
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:47
I think thats how most do it
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:47
Part of playing 40K is -- IMHO -- learning how to handle conflicts/disagreements without an outside mediator
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:48
I do feel like someone official should step in sometimes to clear up genuine rules issues
but its where do you draw the line
and its hard to have the resources to do it
I do like the idea of using Chess Clocks tho
I've been stiffed by slow play before
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:49
I bought one, super cheap on Amazon
I've been playing games with it. It's made me a better player
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:49
can use apps on the phones but I was looking at buying a real one :) something about having a proper one is just so much better than an app
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:50
Oh I concur sir
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:50
its like how i much prefer real codexes to the electronic ones
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:50
I have digital as well as proper paper ones for armies I play and digital only for those I don't.
Partially for "know thy enemy" but also for fluff reasons and TO purposes.
I understand the fluff section of the new Tau codex is supposed to be pretty good.
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:51
I have all the epubs on my iPad and my laptop but when I'm playing I like having the physical book in hand
the electronic ones are great for having easy access to them all but I think its quicker and more pleasent to use the real book in actual games
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:52
Right?
But then again
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:52
I find myself doing a lot of waiting for people having to open their phone, load the app, swish between pages etc
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:52
I'm a "reader"
I like books -- physical books
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:52
ah now tho, in an odd twist :)
I prefer reading electronic
I only got into actually story book reading a few years ago when I first got a tablet
I'm not a fan of laying in bed reading actual paper books, prefer my iPad
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 17:55
I have an iPad for just that purpose. The only apps on it are BattleScribe and Best Coast Pairings (both TO and Player) and Dropbox and Box for storage access LOL
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:55
:)
I'm finding it odd how I seem to be favouring my Custodes these days
I bought the book on a whim
But it's been my go-to army for a while now
Win more than I lose with it but I lose enough to know it's not OP
Had some good games; always a bloodbath and generally quite close in the end
tekton
@tekton
Mar 11 2018 17:58
They are fiberglass hammers and all
James
@skonk
Mar 11 2018 17:59
Ive started running them with some guard to generate CP tho
The strats work well to offset the various issues they face and to counter some of the negatives to the wargear
It feels like they need strats more than a lot of other armies
And Greyfax has won me games with her deny the witch
I need to get some use out of my nurgle deamons tho; bought all the new kits and i even evested in 9 pox riders of nurgle from FW but so far I've only had 1 game with them (before I got the riders)
built the toad part of em ages ago but just been doing the riders today having being sat there unbuilt for weeks

I am waiting for GW to give me the proper excuse I need to fall to Chaos -- but it'll be Slaanesh, and right now Slaanesh just isn't offering anything I want

he wouldn't have lost at first turn, only 2nd
BotG specifies "start of any battle round after the first"

I would once again like to give thanks to my friend that showed me Vallejo Decal Fix through an airbrush is the absolute best gloss/shine-killer ever.

I have like a 50% success rate with Dull-Kote. I don't know if I'm spraying too close, or too far away, too much, or too little, or if I'm not facing east at the appropriate time, or if Mercury isn't retrograde in Aquarius when I do it or what
But Vallejo decal fix, thinned and shot through the Paasche (aka, "the crappy airbrush") delivers the flat matte finish like magic.
It's The Matte Magic.

@CrusherJoe that work over gloss wash?
Joe Beddoe

Mar 11 2018 18:54
It works over everything
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Mar 11 2018 18:54
I'd be curious if you wouldn't mind giving it a try for me, because if it doesn't and you can use the washes to "selectively gloss" things
then that would be ace

Gloss wash. Gloss paint. Supposedly matte paint that you sprayed too...um...enthusiastically...and wound up with a shine like a mirror
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Mar 11 2018 18:55
huh
seems strange to me because the citadel gloss washes supposedly have reflective particles in them
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Mar 11 2018 18:55
It's made to go over decals and kill their glossy finish

while the other two are just surface smoothness

Well I have to go to the Warhammer store here in a bit got pick up my Shadowsword sponson bits. I'll pick up some gloss wash and do some experiments with it if you'd like

I'd appreciate it
I've had very little success with dull-kote as well

I think VDF would work, since it makes a matte layer between the light and the alleged "reflective particles" in gloss wash
