because the primary thing deathwatch don't have much of and need is solid anti-tank

But most aliens aren't known for rolling around in tanks :smile:

and that gets me thinking ... actually they are .. Eldar, Necrons, Tau, Orks .. all Xenos with tank stuff ..
only really nids that don't have metal plates to protect the squishy ... even GSC do
Simon Porter
@FarseerVeraenthis
Jun 01 2018 11:19
Uhuh, but, Deathwatch fluff puts them as small strike teams to engage specific targets, not really Armies to fight Armies...
So their gear matches the fluff
But that doesn't help in real battles
Having said that, they have decent access to lascannons, what other pure anti tank options are there?
Will Pattison
@GenWilhelm
Jun 01 2018 11:22
melta stuff, thunder hammers, missile launchers

@WindstormSCR

my solutions are just to take transports with AT capabilities, and quadlas dreads if i need extra
1 Stormeagle is a fixture in my lists because it can carry regular dudes, jump and terminators, has potms unlike a blackstar, and 20-Man transport cap
then two twin lascannons and a decent anti-horde weapon

Las of any flavor usually lets me down
It's either a mental block or the dice gods laughter

@GenWilhelm
Jun 01 2018 12:51
ah, Joe, just the person!
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 12:51
I've rolled 1 to hit, twice in a row, with a las cannon on Pask more time than I can count
Hey hey @GenWilhelm
Will Pattison
@GenWilhelm
Jun 01 2018 12:51
have you seen those clear bases that some people use?
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 12:52
You mean the ones from CorSec Engineering? The ones I just ordered 15 more of? :)
Or some other clear base?
Will Pattison
@GenWilhelm
Jun 01 2018 12:53
yeah, they look pretty similar. basically clear plastic bases instead of the usual GW ones
at a tournament, would you consider that to be "fully based"?
somebody asked me that the other day and i had no idea
Earl Bishop
@DrTobogganMD
Jun 01 2018 12:55
As that is the intent of the bases
Yes
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 12:55
So I can't speak for any other event/TO -- just to preface what I'm about to say
Earl Bishop
@DrTobogganMD
Jun 01 2018 12:55
I would consider it to be fully based.
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 12:55
But it would depend on the vehicle
Earl Bishop
@DrTobogganMD
Jun 01 2018 12:55
I don't care for them personally
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 12:55
Did it originally come with a clear base option?
Earl Bishop
@DrTobogganMD
Jun 01 2018 12:56
But the intent of them is to blend your units in with the battlefield.
Will Pattison
@GenWilhelm
Jun 01 2018 12:56
no, theyre planning to put all of their models on them. infantry mostly
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 12:56
Banana bikers, for example, came with a regular oval biker stand, and a clear circle stand
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 13:13
Actually
After some thought
I would consider clear plastic bases "fully based" for units with <Fly> only
It's no more "fully based" than sexy resin bases left unprimed and unpainted. There's literally no effort involved. I let it slide for Flying units only because GW makes clear plastic bases for those units (though not all of them, admittedly)
CrusherJoe @CrusherJoe :heart:s sexy resin bases.
Will Pattison
@GenWilhelm
Jun 01 2018 13:19
cool, thanks for the answer :smile:
and apologies for derailing your lascannon anecdote :stuck_out_tongue:
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 13:21
No worries -- that was pretty much it
Even when I was running a Guilliman gunline with 3 Dev squads (which == 4 las cannons) I'd fail to hit and/or wound with las with shocking regularity
...and that's hard to do
Will Pattison
@GenWilhelm
Jun 01 2018 13:23
yeah, re-rolling hits and wounds should mean you deal damage pretty consistently
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 13:23
Especially when really needed the hit/wound to finish off something especially threatening
Honestly it's like that with melta too
Will Pattison
@GenWilhelm
Jun 01 2018 13:24
i cant remember the last time i killed something with a lascannon. i mostly rely on battle cannons and artillery (and the occasional volcano cannon) for my AT
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 13:24
And with Pask? With every other weapon he's an effin' superstar
I've played my Shadowsword exactly once
Mainly because it's not finished yet -- finally got the bits to complete it, so I'll be rolling it out soonish
Huh
Now that I think of it I had good luck with the 4 las cannons on the SSword
Will Pattison
@GenWilhelm
Jun 01 2018 13:30
its fun when you actually get to use it. but ive had one too many games where its died or been crippled on turn 1
Will Pattison
@GenWilhelm
Jun 01 2018 13:35
got a game tomorrow where im taking more than one, so that'll be a test of whether super-heavy companies work in 8th :smile:
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 13:43
Good luck brother, I hope you kick some ass
LOL
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Jun 01 2018 13:50
its everything BUT lascannons and similar that let me down
melta never does its job, neither does melee
but brightlance/lascannon? works every time
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 13:51
Hey whatever works LOL
Will Pattison
@GenWilhelm
Jun 01 2018 13:51
melta works okay-ish for me. usually doent make its point back though
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Jun 01 2018 13:51
@GenWilhelm my issue with clear bases, is more a long term one
if you're not playing on soft mats, they'll scratch up really easy
CloverFox
@CloverFox
Jun 01 2018 13:51
it look hilarious when you have a sculpted base like guilleman
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Jun 01 2018 13:52
even happens with the GW flying bases, and is why I'm considering swapping the clear jetbike/vehicle bases for the same size black cup style base
Will Pattison
@GenWilhelm
Jun 01 2018 13:54
yeah, thats fair. it was more of an issue of whether they would fly at a tournament
no pun intended
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Jun 01 2018 13:55
I'd argue for fully based qualifying, as long as they were quality and not crappy translucent
since getting clear poly to not mist to superglue is tricky
its a stylistic choice
I think in those cases "fully based" comes down to the quality of the job making them look right on clear bases
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 13:58
I don't have our painting rubric handy but I'm pretty sure being "fully based" means "painted"
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Jun 01 2018 13:58
if its superglued dudes on crappy quality clear plexi, with mist rings and rough edges, then they can get fkt
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 13:58
Which not that I think about it screws up clear base guys
Hmm
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Jun 01 2018 14:00
so "are the edges smoothed" "are there mist rings from the glue points to mar the effect" "does the size match the outer diameter of a standard base"
"is it polished for a truly clear effect as much as possible"
I have one order on the way and just made another one last night
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Jun 01 2018 14:01
tbh as clear bases get more popular then there should just be a second rubric for clears, and make sure its down to the details of the job
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 14:01
I got the clear ones for my planes and my biker bois
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Jun 01 2018 14:01
example for WCG you have enough time to say "clear bases are ok, but you WILL be judged on techincal execution to count for fully based"
aka sloppy jobs can git rekt
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 14:02
Part of it is for transport purposes -- the bases unscrew and are much easier to transport that way
That's not a bad idea right there
I just don't want folks putting infantry on clear bases
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Jun 01 2018 14:02
it can actually look pretty damn good
there was one of an IG platoon on a cityfight softmat
looked more like a proper diorama even though it was an active game, because the guy had done the bases really well
clear bases are one of those things where done right, they look awesome. done badly, they look utter shit
and tbh should be allowed to count since doing them right takes almost as much time as doing a proper normal base, between the cleaning/peeling careful attachment to avoid unremovable glue mist rings, etc
TOs just need to make sure they have an out clause to tell sloppy rush jobs to GTFO
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Jun 01 2018 14:09
and then the important part:
have one dude assigned to judge all clear base armies, so they are all held to the same standard with no judging bias
considering the low count it shouldn't be too bad
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 14:10
Our paint judging is a checklist
As John puts it, "It's about showing effort, not artistic brilliance."
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Jun 01 2018 14:11
add a checklist section for clears?
tekton
@tekton
Jun 01 2018 14:11
So at least I won’t be last if it’s about effort ;) and those CorSec bases are indeed awesome

Hot Aggressor action right there. Also, ROC! nice!
Just finished GW seminar at UkGE. Next 3 Codexes, wolves, orks, then something else.

Wolves!
Finally!
Any other sweet info @Mad-Spy ?
Also GW needs to stop it with the back to back releases of things I love

@CrusherJoe @FarseerVeraenthis I've decided how I'm going to make a watch master
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 15:18
Lay it on me
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Jun 01 2018 15:18
I'm not doing one of the watch fortresses with banners on the two-page spread
so I'd like to do my own
I like the primaris ancient banner
so I'm going to take that, clip off the bolt rifle, and give him a guardian spear
primaris watch master
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 15:19
Sounds good to me
should be real easy to do
Iain Launchbury
@Mad-Spy
Jun 01 2018 15:20
@CrusherJoe, not really. Showed a quick pick of the Cawdor gang, but no real info. They're not demoing Titanicus, which is a shame.
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Jun 01 2018 15:20
haven't decided if I'm doing Fort Nexus, Null Breach, or my own
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 15:20
Man Titanicus is something I've been waiting years for
How's Cawdor looking?
@WindstormSCR Fort Nexus sounds cooler

Jun 01 2018 15:22
This ^^
Is basically what they told us.
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 15:24
My take-away from that is GSC is next up after Wolves and Orks
Will Pattison
@GenWilhelm
Jun 01 2018 15:26
that's the sense i got, but Iain reckons otherwise
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe
Jun 01 2018 15:27
Since he was actually there and is a trustworthy source of info I'll take his word for it
Now....ignore the, um, awful green color (they came that way) but after some plume removal, I think they look much better. (Remember, "Suffer not a topknot to live.")
Iain Launchbury
@Mad-Spy
Jun 01 2018 16:04
They specifically said not GSC, sorry.

Jun 01 2018 16:35
The topknots in mine somehow all disappears before I could put them on...strange that...
Simon Porter
@FarseerVeraenthis
Jun 01 2018 19:58
@WindstormSCR so, he'll be a Primaris Watch Master with a massive banner??
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Jun 01 2018 21:03
yep
which tbh fits well considering he'll be mostly babysitting primaris
and being a general buffbot
big things are the fact that adaptive tactics costs 1 CP with a WM warlord, along with the g-spear being a great target for castellan of the black vault
I have a couple of spare g-spears from my original custodes that are the nicer ones, not as chunky as the warden kit
Simon Porter
@FarseerVeraenthis
Jun 01 2018 22:51
yeah, in my last game my Watch Master went toe to toe with a Space Wolves Venerable Dreadnaught
the dread had an axe and shield combo - what could go wrong?!
oh yeah, that multiple damage axe
and y appaling save rolling
he died
(did I mention my targeting priority went awry in that game)
Simon Porter
@FarseerVeraenthis
Jun 01 2018 23:00
mind you, having a 3++ on a dreadnought makes them pretty tough!!
WindstormSCR
@WindstormSCR
Jun 01 2018 23:08
I've contemplated rolling one for the lols as an aux support choice in DW colors
Simon Porter
@FarseerVeraenthis
Jun 01 2018 23:10
it was tough, I hit it with lascannons, melta, heavy and normal thunder hammers, overcharged plasma
it just wouldn't die
I thought, "I've got the tools for this" tried to take it down and in the end I should have simply ignored it and targeted the rest of his army
I took power swords for everyone, so bearing in mind the marines could wound it (and they did), the 3++ just kept it going
he did seem to have some very jammy rolls
