I have to admit that I've never really enjoyed the "I MUST WIN" mindset, and I think yesterday just cemented that for me
So as a competitive player I would like to point out that not all competitive players are like that
I build hard lists, yes. I try my hardest to play a good, tactical game.
I don't have the "I MUST WIN" mindset, as I have found that mindset is the first step to having sub-optimal games, experiences, and crazy "I should have won that game" losses

my main problem with 8th basically boils down to 8th taking the alpha strike problems of 7th and turning the dial up to 11
the unkillable deathstars of 7th were kind of a backswing response to shit like knights hitting the table
and turn 1 fiestas like the drop assault force thing
but now 8th still has the turn 1 kill problem, but a lot fewer units capable of surviving it in a meaningful way
I think GW finally realized it with the +1 cover strat, but we'll see if any other changes come

that reddit thread had a good breakdown of GW thoughts on where stuff is right now .. but it really shows them in a bit of a bad light

"Why aren't you all playing open play ? LOOK! over there ... a shiny thing, don't look at matched play, we didn't expect soup, we don't know what we're doing with kneejerk fly restrictions and for gods sake .. we LOVE elite armies ... but no we're not giving you any more CP!"

I must admit, it was around then that I became a BScribe Supporter and prophet
ArmyBuilder: "Herpy derp derp...what's 'Castellans of the Imperium'? It's not like we've managed to get the Iron Priest right despite countless messages about it. You were expecting maybe something different?"

@CrusherJoe and @tekton I was maybe a little salty after my Double experience, and that statement was a little sweeping - I mean, we got thrashed in 3 turns on our second game against harlequins and drukhari but our opponents were super fun to play against - their army was just a hard counter for ours: haywire cannons Vs Knights is not pretty (and see previous discussion about deployment errors)
Joe Beddoe

I think I would like to go to a "proper" singles tournament just to experience the difference, but the problem is to be good you need practice, and tournament practice is less fun than fluffy fun games :-)

Joe Beddoe

When I roll in on Thursday evenings I have the "I'll play anybody" mentality
Simon Porter
@FarseerVeraenthis
Nov 27 2018 16:20 UTC
at GW?? or elsewhere??
around here it seems that you have to arrange the game before-hand
which makes it tricky
especially when you don't really have loads of spare time for "anything"
Joe Beddoe
@CrusherJoe

The big local store is Dragon's Lair -- it's kinda like Wal-Mart for geeks

We also have a very active FB group for pre-arranging games and whatnot

@CrusherJoe
Nov 27 2018 16:24 UTC
That's why I told my gf when we first got together that I was "married to the game" and that there were going to be times when she was a Warhammer Widow and if that wasn't okay, we could just stop things right then and there

for me, I've always "fiddled about" with WH40K, it's just a couple of years ago I decided that either I was going to "get rid of all this junk" or actually pull my finger out, paint some models and try to play more games
I realised I loved it all too much to get rid of it, so the only option is to put a little more effort in!!
I think my wife kinda gets it, but she is not much of a geek, so... there are limits :smile: :wink:

She told me that all the things that make me, me is what she fell in love with, and to try and change that would change me...and that's not cool and why would she want to do that anyway?
She raised two very bright and very geeky kids, in to fantasy, sci-fi and gaming (D&D, computer games, etc.)
So...she gets it. :grin:

She is also largely an introvert, and while I'm the opposite, between the two of us we have a great balance.
We also both greatly value time spent alone
And doing "your own thing"
But...then again, we're both in our 40s and that kind of attitude probably only percolates to the top with age and experience
I cherish my time with her, and her with me, but part of that is that we aren't up each other's asses 24/7
But...that's what works for us. Every relationship is different. :smile:

Mind, it did take a Blackstone Fortress colliding with the planet, along with the deactivation of a good number of the pylons - JUST as they were being researched by Trazyn and Cawl.
But still.
Then we had the totally legit Ynnari show up ... then papa smurf woke up from his nap.
Then we just ignore the next 100 years, then boom, 8th ed.

The opening of 8th ed mentioned a century had passed since the Indomitus Crusade began
and that started at the end of GS:3
and we still don't know what Nick Fury said to thor.
I mean, Emps to Guilliman.
Oh haha, I forgot about Fenris being kinda of fucked up by Magnus. Replacing one planet with another entirely ...
The imperium got pretty fucked by that 13th crusade.

Synapse isn't as important as previous versions; there are some other character buffs that are important. Should someone move to even a slightly wrong spot it's far more punishing for Nidz than almost anyone else. (Not quite as bad a GK moving on to the board, but but close)
