So I directly attached to the serial port via sudo screen /dev/ttyS0 9600,cs7,ixon and I'm getting barcodes with S08A prefixed properly (had to add a hex 53 prefix in NCR flash tool). Not sure why when I cat /dev/ttyS0 its putting ? where letters are and numbers 0 & 6, 9

hmm
now when I cat /dev/ttyS0 I get xS08A<insertUPChere> or ~S08A<insertUPChere>
Cursor is hovering on the S, so I think I'm good to go?
should test after sleep

Sounds that way. As long as you have the carriage return ETX byte, pos.exe -v should list every message received from the scale

yeah, it is sending a carriage return
I guess onto figuring out the weight commands

There are two POS => scale commands. "S11" is get next stable non-zero weight and "S14" is get current status. The response to "S11" is "S11WWWW" where WWWW is the weight in hundreths of pounds. Responses to "S14" are "S140" for scale not ready, "S141" for scale in motion, "S142" for weight exceeding maximum, "S143" for stable zero weight, "S144WWWW" for stable non-zero weight, and "S145" for weight below zero.
