so if /etc/resolv.conf has localhost set as the resolver
it doesnt look like kresd can bootstrap root.keys and will just hang
unbound-anchor does work though

i thought at one point if i ran kresd -f 1 it would return to the prompt after forking, but its not happening now. am i just mistaken?

If you specify -f, you get into non-interactive mode.
-f 1 won't actually do any forking, only trigger that mode

is there a use case for that (because it doesnt return to prompt)?

Sometimes you don't want to mix the log and the interactive commands. You can still control it via the local socket, e.g. run nc -U ./tty/$PID
