Dec 18 2014 18:45
Haha, I'm down. Any time you wanna do some Karaoke you can either come on up to Madison or just bring your laptop and get me on Hangouts. :-P

@ChetHarrison
Dec 18 2014 19:38

Joanne Daudier
@jdaudier
Dec 18 2014 19:38
random q… would you guys ever work for a company that uses straight backbone?
Trezy
@trezy
Dec 18 2014 19:39
@ChetHarrison Agreed.
Joanne Daudier
@jdaudier
Dec 18 2014 19:39
@ChetHarrison is there private room karaoke there?
Chet Harrison
@ChetHarrison
Dec 18 2014 19:39
yes and it fits like 200 people
Trezy
@trezy
Dec 18 2014 19:40
@jdaudier Yes. I'd work anywhere that provided me the same benefits/pay I've got right now and took me far away from Angular.
:-P
Joanne Daudier
@jdaudier
Dec 18 2014 19:40
lol
how about between bigger company vs. startup?
or agency
Sam Saccone
@samccone
Dec 18 2014 19:42
lol @ChetHarrison !
5 star resort hahaha
Trezy
@trezy
Dec 18 2014 19:44
...
@jdaudier
Are you recruiting right now?
:-P
srsly tho, it would depend on the company more than what their size is.
Joanne Daudier
@jdaudier
Dec 18 2014 19:45
i’m interviewing today actually
so i’m just wondering about the types of companies that people like working in
Trezy
@trezy
Dec 18 2014 19:46
Ah, gotcha
Joanne Daudier
@jdaudier
Dec 18 2014 19:46
startups vs. more established vs. agency
Trezy
@trezy
Dec 18 2014 19:46
I.E. I'd rather go with a bigger company that has a ton of projects going on than a startup that's only got one mediocre product.
Joanne Daudier
@jdaudier
Dec 18 2014 19:46
bigger company with one app though, right?
most bigger companies might just have 1 app
Trezy
@trezy
Dec 18 2014 19:47
But my optimal place would be a funded startup with a solid vision and a relaxed culture.
Sam Saccone
@samccone
Dec 18 2014 19:47
1 app tho is really lots of apps @jdaudier
:) for big companies
but consuluting vs big company is very different
i think it is harder to be as good working for large company
good meaning knowing a spread of things
Trezy
@trezy
Dec 18 2014 19:48
:this:
Joanne Daudier
@jdaudier
Dec 18 2014 19:48
breadth => consultancy
Sam Saccone
@samccone
Dec 18 2014 19:48
large apps encourage you to become a domain expert on their stuff
Joanne Daudier
@jdaudier
Dec 18 2014 19:48
depth => company with 1 app
so @samccone i’m guessing you vote for consultancy
Sam Saccone
@samccone
Dec 18 2014 19:49
but depth in their custom stack
not really arguing a side
Trezy
@trezy
Dec 18 2014 19:49
That kind of depends, though. Like at InIn, we have one main product which is several different apps.
Sam Saccone
@samccone
Dec 18 2014 19:49
just different experiences
Trezy
@trezy
Dec 18 2014 19:49
All of them are built with different tech.
And it's not hard to float between teams.
Chet Harrison
@ChetHarrison
Dec 18 2014 19:50
@samccone we could serve free popcorn
Joanne Daudier
@jdaudier
Dec 18 2014 19:50
so the idea i guess is to go somewhere with a lot of variety it sounds like
Ian Stewart
@ianmstew
Dec 18 2014 19:51
@ChetHarrison I’d come to Pelican Hill :)
Trezy
@trezy
Dec 18 2014 19:52
:-P
I wonder if we could get all 2120 members on Gitter to come to the conf...
Joanne Daudier
@jdaudier
Dec 18 2014 19:53
i think if you made it really really cheap
and then ask the speakers to volunteer...
:smile:
Trezy
@trezy
Dec 18 2014 19:54
As long as my face ends up on the screen again, I'm in.
Joanne Daudier
@jdaudier
Dec 18 2014 19:54
it could just be a smaller, more niche conf
@trezy in that case, you should just do a talk
Trezy
@trezy
Dec 18 2014 19:55
Well now that's just not the same.
:-P
Joanne Daudier
@jdaudier
Dec 18 2014 19:55
basically whoever you “tag” in your talk will have to speak next year
Trezy
@trezy
Dec 18 2014 19:55
Haha, that's a fun idea.
Ian Stewart
@ianmstew
Dec 18 2014 20:30

I gotta say I have been playing with firebase for last hour or so and I freeking love that thing!
Joanne Daudier
@jdaudier
Dec 18 2014 20:46
i need to try it...
i started with Parse.com a bit but i wonder if i get real time
Chet Harrison
@ChetHarrison
Dec 18 2014 20:48
it has no learning curve
the api could fit on one page and you get a json based rest api with Auth and OAuth with super easy to understand totally fine grained security controls
Joanne Daudier
@jdaudier
Dec 18 2014 20:52
does it give you twitter authentation out of the box?
Chet Harrison
@ChetHarrison
Dec 18 2014 20:54
I think so but def google and fb
Joanne Daudier
@jdaudier
Dec 18 2014 20:54
i need twitter :smile:
Chet Harrison
@ChetHarrison
Dec 18 2014 20:54
I'll check
Ian Stewart
@ianmstew
Dec 18 2014 20:55
@jdaudier parse is pure rest but no push notifications (yet) for their web api
but parse has great “server-side” plugins, including payments systems and email integrations.
of course it has all the login types. i guess it depends on how much you need realtime or pseudo-offline capability.
walla
Ian Stewart
@ianmstew
Dec 18 2014 20:58
nice
Chet Harrison
@ChetHarrison
Dec 18 2014 20:58
so with code
'use strict';

var Firebase = require('firebase');

var db = new Firebase('https://nimble-chef.firebaseio.com/');

db.set({
    recipes: [{
            title: 'Chicken Soup'
        }, {
            title: 'Chocolate Chip Cookies'
        }

    ]
});
I was able to add to a remote db and automatically receive the update on listeners on any other device
and now I could hit https://nimble-chef.firebaseio.com/recipes
and get the recipes array
bam
I mean how dam smart is that?
if you hit that uri you will get my data presented in firebase's gui but if you added
Chet Harrison
@ChetHarrison
Dec 18 2014 21:03
db.on("value", function(snapshot) {
  console.log(snapshot.val());
});
to any client you would extract pure json
besides configuring user auth and access rules that is it
if you go off line it stores locally and auto commits when your back online
sorry forgot to change ref to db

yes so now

'use strict';

var Firebase = require('firebase');

var db = new Firebase('https://nimble-chef.firebaseio.com/');

db.set({
    recipes: [{
            title: 'Chicken Soup'
        }, {
            title: 'Chocolate Chip Cookies'
        }

    ]
});

db.on("value", function(snapshot) {
      console.log(snapshot.val());
});

just logged

{ recipes:
   [ { title: 'Chicken Soup' },
     { title: 'Chocolate Chip Cookies' } ] }
