ooh... not too solid on OOP yet.. or javascript, but seeing how it's 7kyu I might give it a shot
TorkelV
@TorkelV
Jul 15 2018 00:39
I think the 7kuy rank is wrong, really should be ~5. Solution is not as obvious as it seems

PHP is awesome for quick web dev, but the language is soo bad

Why not try Ruby/Rails?
Good for quick dev and easy to understand + predictable

Good to see like-minded people here :wink: If I had a chance to restart, I'd definitely choose something other than PHP as my server-side language for backend development, perhaps Python or similar

You always have a chance to restart. I like Spring(Java) whenever I work in a team, php is nice for personal stuff though, mostly because it's so easy to do changes

Jul 15 2018 03:18
@JomoPipi that depends on what you mean by website. Anyone can write a few html tags and call it a website
A backend language is not really useful unless you have a data source though, do you know SQL?
DanL12186
@DanL12186
Jul 15 2018 03:19
You don't necessarily need to know SQL if you have an intermediary
(ORM)
JomoPipi
@JomoPipi
Jul 15 2018 03:21
no, I don't
and yeah that's literally what I mean, a few html tags and call it a website
I have to buy it no?
TorkelV
@TorkelV
Jul 15 2018 03:22
Would also say that learning PHP and HTML at the same time might not be a good idea. I would practice HTML/CSS a lot first, make some static websites, then try to modify them with a backend language later

@DanL12186
Jul 15 2018 03:22
CSS suckssssssssssssssss

@JomoPipi you can use nodejs
JomoPipi
@JomoPipi
Jul 15 2018 04:06
what's that
if you're doing any JS on CW, it's using nodejs
you can do serverside with nodejs
JomoPipi
@JomoPipi
Jul 15 2018 04:11
ohh cool, yea I do a tiny bit
JomoPipi
@JomoPipi

Jul 15 2018 05:37

DanL12186
@DanL12186

Jul 15 2018 05:49
ah how much does it cost on heoruku 5$ ?
DanL12186
@DanL12186
Jul 15 2018 05:49
Well for the most basic service, it's free
But you wouldn't run a real website that took appreciable traffic that way
just one you could set up to show off
10XL
@10XL
Jul 15 2018 06:59
you can get 750 hours/month of t2 micro ec2 instance for 1 year when you register for AWS
i think there's also a google cloud free tier

idk how fun it would be to make a couple static websites :s

Unless you're like a digital artist or something, you probably won't find designing static websites from scratch fun unless you're doing it for the first few times. I have zero creativity so I just pull all my designs from HTML5 UP LOL :stuck_out_tongue:
