Hi everyone, I have a question on the "return" key in a JavaScript function. Basically "return" works like the "enter" tab on the JS console (when viewing Inspect Element mode), right? So all "return" really does is save us the trouble of clicking on "enter," especially in a long list of functions?
javascript4life
@javascript4life
May 30 2017 01:15
@Coderepublica are you referring to using the word return in the javascript code?? LIke this
function stuff(a) {
    return a*3;
}
Coderepublica
@Coderepublica
May 30 2017 01:21
@javascript4life YES
javascript4life
@javascript4life
May 30 2017 01:24

the return keyword is so we can access what happens in the function. If the code was just

function stuff (a) {
     a*3
}

we would have no way getting the data from the function. So the return word pretty much just says hey, here is what I did and you can see the data we just made/create/changed

Coderepublica
@Coderepublica
May 30 2017 01:28
I see. But can’t I also just do something like this:
function stuff (a) {
a*3
}
// click “enter” key here and the result should show up?
@javascript4life Sorry, can’t figure out how to do the code snippet thing
javascript4life
@javascript4life
May 30 2017 01:30
i guess I don't understand what you are saying in your last response. "enter" is a key on the keyboard. return is a javascript keyword they have nothing in common
Coderepublica
@Coderepublica
May 30 2017 01:31
@javascript4life Ok, got it. I just wondered if they were the same functionally. Thanks for your answers!
javascript4life
@javascript4life
May 30 2017 01:31
if you are talking about in the debugger then hitting the "enter" key on your keyboard will run the code
@Coderepublica np
even though some keyboards have "return" on the "enter" key they don't have anything to do with using the actual word return in your javascript code. I can see how that is confusing though but they are 10000% different

hi gang! I'm new to the course, making my way through the Form assignment, and I can't get my browser to throw errors when minimum password length is NOT met
  Password: <input type="password" id="password" placeholder="your password" pattern=".{5, 10}" required title="Input string should be between 5 - 10 characters"><br>
any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Johnny Hu
@heyitsjhu
May 30 2017 01:58
@skonkiel Your code looks right. But what happens if you remove the space? .{5,10} instead of .{5, 10}

Hi everyone, greetings from indonesia, and thumbs up for your spirit of helping each other..
I just wondering whether you guys have thingking the same ..
Mongodb and mongoose makes everything more complicated than SQL?
javascript4life
@javascript4life
May 30 2017 04:05
@oksaf_twitter i don't think it makes it more complicated. I think if you come from an SQL background it might but as someone who has not worked with SQL I think mongo makes a lot of sense to me at least
Adam B
@A_Benck_twitter
May 30 2017 04:08
hey guys, hopefully simple question here... I'll paste a pic of the code and the result
not sure why I'm getting the space on the left. Nothing in the code points to it that I can see, I would think that would just be size of the pictures but nothing looks too big. If anything some are a little smaller and fit shouldn't be an issue. Thoughts?
javascript4life
@javascript4life
May 30 2017 04:11
the images are different sizes thats why you are getting that weird empty space
Adam B
@A_Benck_twitter
May 30 2017 04:12
I figured that must be it but didn't think any of them seemed too big. Must be though. Thanks
javascript4life
@javascript4life
May 30 2017 04:12
yeah the first 3 look fine but the rest are clearly different sizes
it's the height of the images messing you up
Osap
@oksaf_twitter
May 30 2017 04:14
@A_Benck_twitter it's remembering me of the issue on video 244. YelpCamp Styling Campgrounds, minute 9:00. I hope it has same solution also..
Osap
@oksaf_twitter
May 30 2017 04:26
@javascript4life hummm.. agree.. agree.. its more readable than SQL. The pain is when our current database is already big and designed in SQL based. mongodb has mongoose. should we make our own mongoose for current database? :(
javascript4life
@javascript4life
May 30 2017 04:27
there are npm packages that can work with SQL if you have a db already created

Hey guys what does this mean "while (!done) { insert code here }
javascript4life
@javascript4life
May 30 2017 19:50
it's while loop.
while (this is true) {
   keeping doing this
}
@nullun1t so in your example while done is not true do that code
Randy Fournier
@nullun1t
May 30 2017 19:50
sorry im asking not for myself lol i know what it means..
congratulations you are now smarter than a class of harvard students!
lol
apparently a buncha harvard students cheated by copying that code and the entire class failed cept the 2 who actually knew what it did

May 30 2017 19:52
thats what i thought I was like wow so i know more than a harvard student..thats...interesting
lol
and the sad part is 60 got caught which probably means there is alot more than that haha
javascript4life
@javascript4life
May 30 2017 19:54
@nullun1t whats funny is from a web perspective I have helped many cs students but they are still far smarter at the underlying concepts just not the actual implementation of it
that's why there is that big argument of bootcamp/self taugh/cs degree
Randy Fournier
@nullun1t

most cs grads come out with little to no actual web experience/projects because the classes are traditionally so theory based (obviously if they are working on the side it may differ) but you see alot of cs grads still needing significant help when it comes to the web. I actually have already jump 2 "spots" up above an ASU CS grad student because of my web experience but he is WAY WAY WAY smarter when it comes to the theory he just can't make it happen
Randy Fournier
@nullun1t
May 30 2017 19:57
@javascript4life Yea sad thats why I find hands on experience is way better than theory both would be preferable but that doesn't seem to happen too often i find lol
javascript4life
@javascript4life
May 30 2017 19:58
yeah and don't get me wrong there are still a ton of cs grads that would run circles around me but it does appear the "masses" don't
Randy Fournier
@nullun1t
May 30 2017 20:29
@javascript4life very true, so I have a jquery question are you able to target like you can in css, for example in css I would do " .classname a { styles } " and all the a tags would get those styles can I do that in jquery to target all the anchors or do I have to give them a class name to target
Randy Fournier
@nullun1t
May 30 2017 20:34
@javascript4life I really should just search before I ask lol I found a way to make it work..its kind of backwards but gets the job done.
so I just did... ''' $('a').parent().find('.menu-overlay-content').click(function() {
$('#main-nav').css("visibility", "visible");
$('#menuNav').css("width", "0%");
setTimeout(function(){groove.widget('load')}, 1000);
});'''
can target the parent of an element to do the same thing

in CSS, i can't get the font weight to change. I've copied the code from google fonts with multiple weights (400, 800, 900 etc) but when I use the font weight property in css it doesn't change - what am I doing wrong?
never mind, got it working

with the @media screen css rule can you make multipe statements?
for example @media screen and (orientation:portrait) and (min-width: 340px) {
body {
background-color: lightgreen;
}
}
javascript4life
@javascript4life
May 30 2017 23:36
yeah you do all your css stuff within the media-query you want it to apply to
Randy Fournier
@nullun1t
May 30 2017 23:38
okay cool, also by chance do you happen to know a site that displays screen resolution and by that i mean the browser window size not the full monitor size
i found one before but i cant seem to find one now lol
javascript4life
@javascript4life
May 30 2017 23:38
use your developer tools to adjust "screen size" if you want otherwise i'm sure you can google and there is probably a site that does it
Randy Fournier
@nullun1t
May 30 2017 23:39
ah yea its for like...i have an iphone 5 and developer tools shows it fits fine

javascript4life
@javascript4life
May 30 2017 23:40
i don't know of one i would just google it. The dev tools have yet to steer me wrong yet so I haven't really had the need
