I have a fun one. How to get particle CLI to work in thing.js
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:36
Particle CLI? I'll have a play soon.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:37
Or just getting a particle photon to work inside of grow IoT in general
There is probably 8 ways to do it
If not 800
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:38
Yeah, definitely.
Are you wedded to the idea of using particle?
Here's some alternatives I know work:
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:38
I realllllly like their hardware and software stack
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:38
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:39
Have you played with one?
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:39
Yeah, I have one. Need to dust it off.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:39
Is it the spark core
Or the newer photon
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:39
The best thing to do is just enable MQTT support for Grow-IoT
I have both.
But I think the spark core is broken.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:40
I am so new to it all, I know only the photon, but I know there are some differences between them, as minute as they may be.
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:40
I got it from a friend and haven't been able to get it to work.
My photon works
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:41
This is what I like about the particle.
I git cloned a guys old meteor skeleton
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:41
Link?
If there are other meteor projects that already work with particle we can figure this out sooner rather than later.
That one
you can input Device ID and Access Token
and run the accompanying FW
on particle
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:42
Awesome thanks!
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:43
and turn LED on and OFF and state changes etc.
Then this one
for actual setup of device
I think might be prudent as well
IF their is a way that could somehow be shoehorned into, say the Devices path
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:43
Does it bother you that all the requests go through particle's servers?
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:44
Not entirely....
I liken it to Firebase, which is now google or whatever
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:44
Ok. Yeah, I am sure we can get this working.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:44
Anything that makes deploying at scale if you were to do so
What excites me about IoT and this specifically, is I can say, build the hardware brain, and hardware for production in say aeroponics, but a User or company can entirely control their end data
Sure it might go through particle's servers, but I don't think they have any context for it or use
like Google would in advertising
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:47
Having worked in tech, I view things a little differently. I tend to like more decentralized approaches, but we can certainly get this working.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:48
I love decentralization, I ran a bitcoin company for 3 years.
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:48
: )
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:48
But it only works when its easy
And its not
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:48
That is true!
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:48
And its prone to failure
And users go WTF
Because of that
losing coins, no recourse
That is what turns people off, they don't WANT accountability
They want warm fuzzies
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:49
Very true, at the end of the day. We need to make something that works and is easy to use.
I'll play around with getting particle working.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:49
And at the end of the day, its for people who HAVE NO FUCKING CLUE HOW TO COMPUTER
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:49
Hah!
+1
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:50
I mean, I am not a super dev, I am like the Cobbler of cobblers
But I can do most anything by grinding, and not fuck it up
The general population, can barely gmail without fucking it up
like for real
I use my mother and father as great benchmarks, my mom can use an iPad to watch movies, or browse the web, anything more difficult, no way.
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:51
My parents too.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:52
My pops, can do high level spread sheeting in excel, and write little functions etc, but things like Bitcoin, or IoT.
lOL
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:52
Well, we can change that, but it will take time, money, and developers.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:52
My generation is the one that is TRULY fucked with zero skills in computer engineering or software, if you are 28-32 and can't PC
you are boned
in some way
and most can't
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:53
Yeah, and this will only become increasingly so.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:53
My girl tells me about their IT guy at her work, and how little he can do.
But they couldn't afford people like me, I make 200k a year in Cannabis
Why would I work for you for 45k?
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:54
Yeah, I used to make >100k working for a tech NON-PROFIT.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:54
And companies dont invest in IT or software
Right
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:54
Still looks pretty much how I left it...
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:55
lol
Funny how that is right
My developer friend who is suppppposed to be working on IoT stuff like this with me, works for a non-profit
his motivations are......ummmm. Lacking.
After for instance, seeing things like Arcade City, what was originally a decentralized UBER using bitcoin as currency
I know there is much room to completely decimate and destroy Venture Funded darlings with Game Theory and network effects
if anyone wants to play pin the tail on the Old Farts
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:58
Hah, that's want I'm aiming to do with Monsanto and big agribusiness.
I <3 game theory.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:58
Well Monsanto is a motherfucker for one reason, Kill Gene in nature, dick move
But as far as big Agri business, I am aiming to become that in Cannabis in one way or another.
Trademarking strain names
Etc.
I spent too long breeding to just give it all away for pennies
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:59
Using data science to optimize environmental conditions....
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 20:59
See. that is where I think engineers are getting it wrong
Farmers
REAL farmers
dont need any fucking tech
to tell them how to grow
ANYTHING
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 20:59
Of course.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 21:00
Nor do most want it
Drones to flyover and spray
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 21:00
Yeah, that's dumb.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 21:00
Drones to check ripeness in vast fields
Thats the play right now
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 21:00
Very short sighted IMHO.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 21:00
There isnt much farmers want or need
Subsidized etc
fat and happy on printed $$
The ones who arent would never use tech to begin with
Cannabis has a window to help people grow plants who normally would otherwise kill cactus
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 21:02
Yes! That's why I'm excited about it.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 21:02
But to specialize and think it will be better than artisans who have a decade or more of experience in any field, is a pipe dream
the data and machines can only do so much. They don't have the logical ability YET to quantify all the nuances that go into properly growing and harvesting award winning cannabis.
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 21:03
That is very true.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 21:03
And I really don't see it happening on a commercial scale
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 21:04
We frankly don't have enough data.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 21:04
Most commercial producers product is, shite quality.
Once you reach a certain scale, the human touch of cannabis is lost
And its machine trimmed etc.
And is shite
And unlike alcohol and tobacco for instance
it is NOT as easy to cover up
they are pushing edibles for this reason indefinitely now
trying to offload the massive quantities of complete horse shit product they are sitting on
which is probably 15x the Great product on shelves
And people aren't biting
I know so many companies in deeeeeep shit because they bought into the boom, and never did cannabis before being legal
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 21:07
Sounds like an oppertunity.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 21:07
They waited for permission to learn the game was going to chew them up and spit them out
oh it absolutely is, but not on a mass scale
The second you scale up to a Costco sized facility, you failed
I am smarter, 5 acres here, 5 there, 5 over nyannnn
a few cargo containers with fully automated aeroponics, revolving and cascading harvest schedules
Blockchain - Smart Contract Development
@EdwardKepler
Jun 25 2016 21:10
edibles very interesting
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 21:10
Edibles is like.....The dish of the day at restaurants
its yesterdays leftovers
and the shittiest of the shitty
Look, what would you prefer, an edible with an unknown quality of product in it, only a MG ratio of THC
Blockchain - Smart Contract Development
@EdwardKepler
Jun 25 2016 21:11
interested in your automated container.
JF

Ya there are lots of people doing it, my cost on a 40 foot 9 foot 6" high cube is about $8,000 fully finished
electronics
plumbing, lights
everything, because I can build and do it all my self
Companies that do those want upwards $60,000 a unit
lol
have fun with ROI!
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 21:13
Lol.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 21:13
on your Micro Greens
I don't think Garnish mints $$$
but that is just me
There are probably no less than 25 companies
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 21:15
What electronics are using?
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 21:15
I guess I meant just electrical, until I figure all the IoT crap out
All power distribution is Powerbox
and I use the flipboxes as well
for a full 24 hour cycle, split ballasts, double the hoods
Originally I was going to use this.

Jun 25 2016 21:18
Agriculture is definately a tough go. But working the largest market ever so no without upside. But not by selling product
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 21:18
I almost started using Growtronix modular system.
But like most everything else. I could make one better for my use
So IoT adventure was embarked upon
Yea. Agriculture is the toughest. Especially with 3rd or older generation farm/ranchers
Jake Hartnell
@JakeHartnell
Jun 25 2016 21:20
Get some cannabis friends together, and let's make open source software for growing environments happen.

5" PVC grow trays, 1/2" manifold sprayer line, sprayers are under medium pressure, every 2 sprayers is a jet sprayer that hits the nft channel below
Similar to General Hydroponics Aeroflo
Just modular and fully expandable in larger more versatile ways
Since all standard 1/2" schedule 40 PVC for feed and return to and from systems control reservoirs
Ball valves and garden hose adapters, can move water to and from anywhere with a quick move of a standard hose
Start moving a few hundred gallons around. And most systems you can buy = worthless

@EdwardKepler
Jun 25 2016 21:27
how much can you get for a plant?
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 21:27
16 x 8 foot aeroponic channels
I get 3+ pounds per 1000w
Last container I think was right at 55 pounds fully dried.
A good amount being just chuff
But 40 ish is premium flower that gets top dollar in shops
Blockchain - Smart Contract Development
@EdwardKepler
Jun 25 2016 21:30
clueless, what is top $
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 21:30
Floats and depends on grower. For me it's $2350 a pound no matter how much weight.
So 40 x 2350 no price breaks

@EdwardKepler
Jun 25 2016 21:32
damn, I am in the wrong business.
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 21:33
Too late to be a produxer to unless you have been in it while illegal.
No one who just comes in brand new and fresh will succeed
Old guard will do all things possible to make them fumble
Recommend "master growers" who don't know shit
And will tank your multi million $ facility
Blockchain - Smart Contract Development
@EdwardKepler
Jun 25 2016 21:34
No interest but thanks for the heads up

Jun 25 2016 21:36
Same can be said in vertical farms. Scale=Death. Small is the way to go
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 21:36
Yes. You can be a large company, I just won't ever have a singular 20 acre farm.
5 acres is the sweet spot to me, and have multiples in 150 mile buffer zones.
Also I am banking on rescheduling like alot of people are
Blockchain - Smart Contract Development
@EdwardKepler
Jun 25 2016 21:38
i would have thought containers would be the way to go
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 21:38
I have massive amounts of acreage in Oklahoma for outdoor production if that happens.
Containers are, but you have to put them somewhere!
Cities have moratoriums on production of cannabis
Certain counties do as well
Also have to have water rights
or PERMISSION to use the city water you already pay for from the utility companies
to produce cannabis for sale
I prefer owning the minerals
and water
My family sells water to the city of Paris, California from the midwest
from wells into our aquifer that our family has owned since late 1800's
Water rights are EVERYTHING in agriculture
And I like to own every facet of what I need for production of it
I hate even using grid power when I get a new property until I get solar setup
It means I am beholden to the whims and judgements of other men
And most politicians or local leaders would sell anyone out for mega conglomerates
JF
@cloudzombie
Jun 25 2016 21:43
They have ZERO power over me if I am 100% self reliant and dependent only on my own ability to produce the services I need
Regular farmers get shafted over water rights from local municipalities, Marijuana farmers have NO chance at fighting those battles for another decade
at least
