GeitMint so it looks like the DP is on a face, when in reality it just uses the same offset
GeitMint this way it never fails. downside is that you need to be able to use references to get the correct z offset.
GeitMint and of course this is no help if the face you want to sketch on is at some strange angle
GeitMint but that is kind of rare.
GeitMint if you have a block centered to the origin you just need to use the matching base plane, set a datum plane and set the z offset to half of the blocks size.
GeitMint if you change the block later on the datum plane with jump along with it.
GeitMint surely not as handy as editing on a face, but once you get used to it, it is just an additional step done in seconds.

GeitMint on the bright side it forces you to be more strict with naming things to reference stuff and not just entering values everywhere
GeitMint the last thing you want to do is search and find any 20mm measurement to make it 22mm, just to find out some of them were for something else :D

nusse GeitMint: i see, thanks
nusse what is the difference to using shape binders?
GeitMint shape binders are across different bodies. Never used those yet

Batoeh Hey guys I have been looking into molded grips. Like custom for each persons hand almost. Thats a lot of crazy sexy curves. Think I would have an easier time using something like blender instead just to ease the burden?

nusse Batoeh: something like that? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wls0cqhVCc4
Batoeh Thats awesome nusse! I will check that out. Thank you.

ryantrinkle i'm trying to make an arc in a sketch that is identical to an arc in another sketch, using external geometry; however, whenever i constrain the center and both endpoints, it fails to solve
ryantrinkle perhaps it's due to a rounding error?
ryantrinkle what's the right way to do this?

mowcius When you're in sketcher, can you create a polar pattern feature like you can in Part Design? For example, if I want to create a sprocket, can I create a segment and duplicate it around a point, or do I have to go about it some other way?
mowcius (I'm used to Solidworks if that helps anyone in explaining things)

@FreeCADGitter
nusse i was asking the same question and the answer was: no complicated sketches. design one teeth and then repeat this usin polar pattern

mowcius nusse, I wonder whether there's a technical reason why it can't be (easily) added as a feature. It seems like it comes up quite a bit as a request
FreeCADGitter
@FreeCADGitter
nusse you should be able to do this programmatically using python :)
mowcius For some of the things I might be modelling I could do it programmatically either in FreeCAD or OpenSCAD but most of the time it's not going to be as practical.
FreeCADGitter
@FreeCADGitter
nusse i guess once you figure out how it works it becomes very practical

GeitMint sketcher and part design are one thing. They work hand in hand. So basically with polar pattern you have what you want, just not where you want it.
GeitMint also where to stop? mirror? linear pattern? it will get overcomplicated, soon.
GeitMint from a logical standpoint it makes sense. you build one block and in the next step you multiply it.
GeitMint also using that feature in sketcher would be permanent as the result would be a gear created with hundreds of lines
GeitMint imagine you want to increase the amount to teeth by one. You need to delete all but one tooth. change its size and do the rotation thingy again.
GeitMint having only one teeth you modify that. close the sketch and increase the number of clones in the part design operation
FreeCADGitter
@FreeCADGitter
GeitMint this only takes seconds.
FreeCADGitter
@FreeCADGitter
mowcius Mirror and linear pattern exist in sketcher no?

@FreeCADGitter
mowcius I'm working through some video tutorials on FreeCAD for Solidworks users that's clearing up some things about how the software functions though
mowcius Mostly as expected it's just getting used to a new piece of software and a new way of working
