bnmorgan recently machinist and design engineer, very long time solidworks user, since 99 (holy crap that's 20 years). not paying for solidwork, but i'm going mad not being able to drop ideas into 3d space and work out issues.
bnmorgan recently RETIRED .....is it friday yet?

@FreeCADGitter
mwayne but there is an installer o.O

@FreeCADGitter
mountaingoat why are the position attributes of objects (e.g. a structure in the arch workbench) relative? how can i set the absolute position?
FreeCADGitter
@FreeCADGitter
KimK bnmorgan: So are you using FreeCAD to work out your ideas, or just thinking about it?
FreeCADGitter
@FreeCADGitter
KimK bnmorgan: I'll check back tomorrow.

Sadale Hey guys. Arch linux issue. The official FreeCAD AppImage isn't working. It crashes right after getting launched with "Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault." shown in the terminal. However, it works if build it from source using AUR, it runs fine

@FreeCADGitter
msocorcim hello #freecad! does 0.18 sketcher permit constraining to construction geometry in another sketch?
FreeCADGitter
@FreeCADGitter
bnmorgan KimK thinking about it at this point, trying to gage which prog is gonna give easiest transition
bnmorgan had to use unigraphics alongside solidworks for a while at corp job, and it was infuriating.
FreeCADGitter
@FreeCADGitter
GeitMint msocorcim: it does, but I cannot recomment it
GeitMint however importing and using measurements from other sketches is far more future prove

@FreeCADGitter
AbleBacon is there a way to create datum lines in a sketch? ones that won't be evaluated when doing something like padding or making a hole?
mozzarella AbleBacon: yeah
AbleBacon and how is that done?
AbleBacon ah, construction mode! thanks
AbleBacon didn't know that existed

@FreeCADGitter
captain_morgan oh boy, anyone know how to remove a broken install on Windows? the installed always uses FreeCAD 0.18 to install, meaning if you go from 0.18.2 to 0.18.3 the old version is overwritten and now windows thinks both are installed
FreeCADGitter
@FreeCADGitter
KimK captain_morgan: Delete the executable files and edit the registry? ("Arrest the usual suspects.")

AbleBacon i have a piece with a hole on it sitting on a surface and i want to drill a hole into the surface that matches the hole on the item sitting on it. how can i do this? the external gemometry button doesn't let me select anyything on the part with the hole in it
FreeCADGitter
@FreeCADGitter
GeitMint make the sketch visible you want to refere on. That is usually the best way.
GeitMint however. Be aware that using external geometerie will easy render your hole part useless.
AbleBacon why's that?
AbleBacon i've tried to "use external geometry" on outside sketches and it doesn't let me
GeitMint because everything is linked by names
AbleBacon these sketches are on different planes
GeitMint and if you e.g. edit an early sketch all references will jump around to random surfaces and edges
GeitMint -> brocken object
GeitMint same whyt happens to campfers etc, if you modify the part while they where applied.
AbleBacon oooof
AbleBacon how does anybody get anything done if everything is always breaking?
GeitMint yeah, a gigantic design flaw of FreeCAD
GeitMint by using DatumPlanes and sketch ontop of them without doing any reference.
FreeCADGitter
@FreeCADGitter
GeitMint sometimes you have no choice. e.g. when you want to create a revolution you need a axle to rotate and that not always x,y or z
GeitMint so if you add a screw hole in the first face the revolution falls appart and you need to repair the axle reference.
AbleBacon ooooof
GeitMint I don´t get why this isn´t high priority on the bug fixing list, but it is not. It seems it is more easy to publish tons of videos how to avoid all the problems and teach how to work around bugs
AbleBacon i read somewhere that "shapebinder" might help with external geometry, but it's not appearing in the correct place
GeitMint I mean if I kill a hole I have a reference to, it is my fault, when it breaks appart, but currently all external reference must be avoided or you will be doomed.
GeitMint shapebinder are for multi body references, while datum planes are for references within bodies.
GeitMint never used shape binders. I mostly create a datum plane for e.g. front, back etc of my Object and construct on that using distances from center.
FreeCADGitter
@FreeCADGitter
GeitMint that way I have no references and it never fall apart.
GeitMint +s
GeitMint modeling however gets much more complex as you sometimes need to add measurements to calculate the offset for datum planes position
GeitMint basically its like when you create a cube and set a champfer. If you later on add a hole to that sketch used to create the cube, the champfer will move to one other edge.
GeitMint because the chamfer is linked to edge 9 and when adding a hole you added 2 new edges, so the chamfer still gets linked to edge 9, even if it should be edge 11

AbleBacon ok thanks for the help
AbleBacon i just wish there were more like... ability to use constraints in 3D mode
