Do I need a Ph.D to contribute impactful research towards artificial general intelligence? An alternative to phd would be to learn enough to qualify for a job and from there,
aquire the knowledge I need to create my own startup for agi research.

If I were to follow the phd path. I'd find comfort in knowing that ill always be able to contribute to research because of my phd.

technically you don't need a Phd to found an AGI startup, but it'll help with credibility
any jobs that involve research towards an AGI would absolutely require at least a Master's or equivalent experience
another thing to know is we are still at least 5-10 years away from an AGI, if not more
there are still a lot of bits and pieces we haven't figured out

If I have a bunch of coordinate data and I want to make a choropleth in D3, how would I go about it? That's beyond the reaches of my D3/JS knowledge :(
I saw that. Are you judging me?! D:

Would it be extremely difficult to gain the experience without a phd? The only resources I would have is Udacity, my job, and other online tools .

No I know that. I have coordinates. Longitude/Latitude. I need to figure out how to associate them with their state
Am I going to have to run them through an API? :'(

you could write a script to add that information to your dataset so you don't have to do it every single time
alternatively, if you have a file filled with the state polygons, you could probably perform an intersects operation without needing to access an api
that's what i did when i had to find cameras by county
