I think formal education might be important. It is in Europe at least. And as I said, universities are catching up with the sector offering courses about ML as never before.
IMO if you are thinking about AI, better to go to uni for a PhD. It is there where the actual research is going on.
For ML though, you will always compete against people with formal education but if you already have analytics business background and a portfolio of projects (eg. Kaggle competitions and hackatons) I think you would be able to make it.
