what makes eigen things different from just regular things?
It sounds like from my simple search and review, that these eigenthings are different because they make calculations easier and can be used for a variety of applications, depending on the domain it is applied to. That is probably one reason why they are difficult to understand because they can be applied in so many ways that you lose its importance.
I found one explanation just now describing them as:
"Eigenpairs are a lot like the roots of a polynomial."
In that context, then the reason why explaining value from these eigenpairsis difficult makes a little more sense.
