We probably should be careful to say “eigenthings” in an effort to drive true understanding. It’s important to understand the difference between eigen values and eigen vectors, and not generalize them as eigen things. I’m not attempting to be pedantic. More so, I think it’s important to push the understanding of these esoteric “things.” I think Eric is generally correct though. Using eigen decomposition is useful because the result includes orthogonality. There are so many applications though, but two that stand out to be are PCA and Markov chains. @becausealice2 @erictleung. I’ll check out the forum. This discussion would be a great refresher on an important topic.
But eigen faces are also interesting...and have driven a lot of modern software in the space of “faces”

@GoldbergData yes, I agree that we should stray away from using "eigenthings". My aim was to try to be casual with it to make it less scary, but yes, we should not stray away from the hard abstract concepts. No worries on being pedantic. I'm all all for it :smile:

I use "eigenthings" because it's faster and easier to type than "eigenvalues and eigenvectors"
I didn't realize it would be mistaken for anything otherwise lol

@becausealice2 @GoldbergData instead of "eigenthings", I think we can safely use "eigenpairs" without being inaccurate or too casual or too long winded to type out. Eigenvectors and eigenvalues are paired up together so it does make sense and I think it is unambiguous as to what this term refers to.
