OMG there's an entire section called "Believing It Does As Intended". It sounds like it would have saved me HOURS of frustration, headaches, and crying.

I know I said I would be starting another project, I lied because I have no space on my hard drive UNTIL today when my new external hard drive arrived, so I can finally start work on it and I know at least @GoldbergData has expressed interest in updates, so expect those.

What's your new project?
Alice Jiang
@becausealice2
Nov 29 2018 00:53
I've been considering completing the project twice, once with JavaScript and once with R (test JS and its libraries against a more established language and its tools)
I'm going to scrape information from billboard.com and analyze popular songs from one(depending on simplicity perhaps more) of their covered genres.

Interesing that simplicity is a metric.

simplicity meaning how much I pull out my hair while writing the code

Tonight I plopped my 9 year old in front of four thousand songs in iTunes and I'm trying to help her navigate. Somehow we ended up on a Moby song she liked. :)

A lot of it will be able to just change inputs and see what happens for the new genre, but for things like NLP of the lyrics, I'm going to have to get a bit more involved on a per-genre if not per-artist/per-song basis
Moby!
Thank you for raising her correctly

He's a lot less relevant since people stopped talking about his beef with eminem, though he got a bit of attention from people I follow on twitter after Eminem's recent controversy around him censoring himself saying..... I think it was the n word?

I feel like I kept up more on this stuff when I worked at Berklee College of Music. But that was more than a dozen years ago.
Alice Jiang
@becausealice2
Nov 29 2018 00:58
yeah, people just "don't be surprised that eminem did it. does no one remember when Moby called him out and he threatened to assault Moby on national tv?"
OHMYGOD What did you do at Berklee?

IT. I ran their mail server.

So I can't ask you to help me up my music theory game, then?
Philip Durbin
@pdurbin
Nov 29 2018 01:01
Probably not, but I did take a music theory class at the Harvard Extension School (only $40 for staff). I don't remember much. I can try to help. Or ask my sister.
I took "piano for drummers" at Berklee. I learned a lot. Which isn't saying much, I guess. No, I'm not a drummer.

Nah, if we're asking sisters I'll just call my own. Her degree is something music-y. Probably vocal performance--she was the face of the school's opera program (she was the one on the program's banners on campus)

It's hilarious, she was so mad about that at first because the picture is her in character, dressed as a decrepit old woman singing her death aria, so you would have had to seen the performance to know who it was
Philip Durbin
@pdurbin
Nov 29 2018 01:05
I didn't know death aria was a thing.
Alice Jiang
@becausealice2
Nov 29 2018 01:06
Oh yes. All powerful old women sing an aria as they die.
It doesn't even matter how serious their condition, the don't die until the ritual of the death aria is complete
Philip Durbin
@pdurbin

Heh.
My music project feels much more mundane. It's just a Google spreadsheet with 500 or so songs I like with links to the video on YouTube. And a Python script to create a web page with thumbnails and links.

Hello everybody :wave:
FYI: Amazon has opened up its Machine Learning internal trainings used to train their own staff for free. Available here: https://aws.amazon.com/training/learning-paths/machine-learning/

@pdurbin it might be more mundane, but that doesn't dim it's value :)
@mstellaluna :wave:
Wow, so have they just scrapped the AWS educate platform and opened everything up to anyone with an AWS account?
Ah, looking through the FAQ it sounds more like it's an AWS rebranding
