@becausealice2 Sorry about that .. message is removed @pdurbin actually its been less since the rooms are less active due to the most of the campers moving over to the forum. But since quincy announced there is a DS FCC in the works we might see more.. I don't know

Honestly I think it's hilarious. Gitter is such a specific platform and hook up bots are so far removed from the intended users that I can't help but laugh. It makes me think about the time in the old freecodecamp/freecodecamp gitter channel when I was accused of catfishing. It's so bizarre and random

@becausealice2 the room was removed after for a reason, it got worse after you left. the room was mainly people who weren't even doing FCC but used it as a hang out space and causing trouble

Huh. I'm from a place where people actually talk about catching catfish so I wasn't familiar with the alternate meaning. :)

Dec 16 2018 21:39
@pdurbin yeah, I'm friends with a couple crazy cat ladies so my mind always has to contemplate the possibility of someone fishing for cats lol
@mstellaluna The whole time since I first started going to that channel there was a bit of an issue with that, though I feel like it started out about more "there's no one here to help so lets talk about actresses" and I did notice a progression towards "I don't feel like helping, but my friends are here, so..."

Towards the end there was even at least one occasion that I saw of people sharing really crass, sexist jokes and I was the only one who seemed to have an issue with it, where before, people were being banned for that same thing lol

Still one of my favorite things
Anyways, @GoldbergData since you're wanting updates on my Node project, I'm relearning JS and am trying to build a web scraper like I did many moon ago here
I feel like it's going to be a lot more complicated this time around, and I haven't decided if I want to do a comparison across Node, R, and Python for scraping. I don't think I do since it is important but not so much specifically regarding the comparison of NLP tools......

and also I'm not convinced I want to learn to build a web scraper in 3 languages

good lord, that was crass
but I'd rather hear more about your web scraper

I mean, It's going to be a web scraper (or, that's the hope)

Dec 16 2018 22:29
no APIs available? you have to resort to scraping?
Alice Jiang
@becausealice2
Dec 16 2018 22:31
I want to collect information about songs on billboard charts, like this. I haven't looked very deep to check for an API, but this is also a chance for me to reintroduce myself to the languages I am working with since I hven't accomplished anything in several months aside from one very basic analysis in R

Dec 16 2018 22:34
ah, right, I think we talked about this a bit. I'm interested in all this music stuff
Alice Jiang
@becausealice2
Dec 16 2018 22:36
Okay so I looked around and there doesn't appear to be any openly available API, and looking at the network thingy in dev tools it looks to me (and it's absolutely possible that I'm mistaken) that the HTML is rendered server-side so I can't sneak any data files being sent to my browser

@pdurbin
Dec 16 2018 22:36
bummer
Alice Jiang
@becausealice2
Dec 16 2018 22:36
So I guess scraping is my only option short of asking and hoping anyone reads my request and then takes it seriously lol
My brother once told me that music is getting dumber, so I want to put that to the test and compare lyrics of top songs over time and see if "dumber" can be quantified lol
do I mean "quantified"?

Worth a shot. I bet you're right.
All I can think about is Chi Chi Rodriguez talking about Devo at https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/devolutionary-design/
He said he's more of a Frank Sinatra guy. Nat King Cole. Dean Martin.

@becausealice2 it seems billboard.com killed their API in 2013. There is billboard.py for accessing billboard.com music charts

No it's perfect, it has almost everything I need already packaged in
So, I'll still need to do a bit of scraping, but OHMYGOD it will be so much easier
