@becausealice2 "I'm not goofing off playing LoL, I'm collecting data and doing user research" 😀 Cool job though!

"Building domain expertise"
I want to apply but the only projects I've done that show off my analytical skills are the ones I'm having the ethical crisis for, and I don't know if I can go to an esports franchise with a visualization portfolio and have them believe me that the skills are very transferable lol

@becausealice2 ...Oh, but this doesn't sound very good

YOU WILL BE ONE OF THE FOUNDING MEMBERS OF OUR ANALYST DEPARTMENT FOR OUR LEAGUE OF LEGENDS PROGRAM.

because their qualifications are

MINIMUM BA OR BS EQUIVALENT IN DATA SCIENCE, COMPUTER SCIENCE, STATISTICS, OR RELATED FIELDS OF STUDY.

So I'm not sure if they have this "low bar" because they want to be inclusive of all backgrounds, or they want to exploit an analyst to do way more data analysis than they are actually qualified for. I hope it is the former.

And no offense on noting the job qualifications having a "low bar" as having a BA/BS. I just mean that a founding member of an analyst department, you will be required/held to create a culture and have intuition on data analysis. So I'd expect someone to have experience managing teams and projects. I hope that makes sense. I just hope they have other more skilled analysts around.

I'm leaning a lot of my assessment based on articles similar to this https://towardsdatascience.com/why-so-many-data-scientists-are-leaving-their-jobs-a1f0329d7ea4

I think they set the bar low because I'm not convinced they know how to hire a data scientist. I know the title is analyst, but what they are asking is beyond the work of "analyst" lol. That's why I'm not confident I could go in with the only publicly available examples of my work being visualizations and have them understand that I do more than make charts that make sense

My thoughts exactly.

but from what I've seen watching the few of their employees who I follow through whatever social media, they seem to be open-minded enough that if someone went in and explained how the work needs to be done they would be receptive
Their founder, Nadeshot has only been a businessman for 11 months, he was a pro-gamer before that and he knows he's in over his head, he's said as much publicly more than once
You think I should reach out and try and explain to them?
Probably not be acknowledged, but hey....
It's for a good cause

@becausealice2 mmm interesting. Good that you did your research on them!

I don't think it hurts to reach out and have a conversation about it. At the least, you can find out exactly what kinds of projects they need help with. And you could reach out to one of the peeps you follow and have an informa conversation with them. But easier said than done and also me as an uninvested person in this i.e. I'm not the one applying to the job.

I don't know that anyone from the org that I follow would notice me (the way the platforms prioritize people with substantial following and I had like... 30 twitter followers when I deactivated the account) and even if they did I don't think they would be of much help as they are all players, and not any kind of administrative role

Okay so I'm not finding the words. How do I approach a "I'm not qualified for this, but also you don't know what you're doing" situation without being a know-it-all via typed communication, so I don't have tone on my side?

@becausealice2 maybe you can just have coffee with one of them to start. Keep it casual.
