function repeat(str, num) {
  // repeat after me
  for(var i = num; i > 0; i--){

repeat("abc", 3);

i zoomed through the program, at basic algorithm right now. have no prior experience with html or coding. should I sit down and practice html and css, website building and what not before i keep moving forward? i dont feel im retaining a whole lot of stuff

can't retain it without repetition - I'd find other html/css courses and do them until you're comfortable
all that typing was tedious, yes? look up Emmet and watch some videos about it. You'll never have to type all those elements again!

:point_right: bonfire no repeats please [wiki]

Problem Explanation:

  • This task requires us to look at each possible permutation of a string. This is best done using a recursion function. Being able to build a function which collects all permutations of a string is a common interview question, so there is no shortage of tutorials out there on how to do this, in many different code languages.
  • This task can still be daunting even after watching a tutorial. You will want to send each new use of the function 3 inputs: 1. a new string (or character array) that is being built, 2. a position in your new string that's going to be filled next, and 3. an idea of what characters (more specifically positions) from the original string have yet to be used. The pseudo code will look something like this:

    ```
    var str = ???;
    perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far){
    if(current string is finished) {
    print current string;
    }else{
    for(var i = 0; i < str.length; i++) {
    if(str[i] has not been used) {
      put str[i] into the current position;
      mark str[i] as used
      perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far)
      unmark str[i] as used because another branch in the tree for i + 1 will still likely use it;
    }
    }
    }
    }
can anyone help with this?
Waypoint: Responsively Style Radio Buttons
You can use Bootstrap's col-xs-* classes on form elements, too! This way, our radio buttons will be evenly spread out across the page, regardless of how wide the screen resolution is.
Nest all of your radio buttons within a <div class="row"> element. Then nest each of them within a <div class="col-xs-6"> element.
heres my code:
<div class="row">
<div class="col-xs-6"><button class="btn btn-block btn-primary"><i class="fa fa-thumbs-up"></i>Like</button></div>
<div class="col-xs-6"><button class="btn btn-block btn-info"><i class="fa fa-info-circle"></i>Info</button></div>
<div class="col-xs-6"><button class="btn btn-block btn-danger"><i class="fa fa-trash"></i>Delete</button></div>
</div>
also tried with col-xs-4 because that made more sense, didnt clear either
Oct 29 2015 06:29
hi all. I'm just curious if anyone knows of a good way to have their work looked at to find out what exactly is wrong with their code? like a good text editor or something similar?
h4r1m4u
@h4r1m4u
Oct 29 2015 06:29
@subtlefluids01 three things:
1) <input> is a self closing tag. it doesn't need to be closed with </input> like <p> or <div>
2) <button>, on the other hand, does
3) when adding the icon, don't add any text in between the <i> and </i> tags. put the text after the icon
@Katie-S text editors can help you via syntax highlighting. that can help you see typos and other errors you made in your code.
they're not going to help you with your code logic, though, if that's what you have in mind
@christoph-phillips you need to add some logic for restarting your clock once it drops down to zero. it would go in this section:
else if (secs === 0) {
        ...
}
you could have a function which, when called, starts the countdown. in the code block above, you'd set the time value of the clock (as it's now down to 0) and call the startClock() function
In your style tag, you are not mentioning the class. Instead of h2 you have to give it the class name you have given to the <h2> tag
h4r1m4u
@h4r1m4u
Oct 29 2015 09:08
ok. so what you did, is changed the color for all <h2> to red. what the exercise is asking you to do is to create a .red-text class that will do that. you have correctly applied the class to your <h2>, but you're missing the class definition in your CSS. here's an example:
<style>
  .blue-text {
    color: blue;
  }
</style>
now do the same for .red-text
Hi guys I have narrowed down my issue to one thing -
In JS, if you manipulate the DOM then how do you get the updated content?
For example if I increased or decreased my time using the +/- buttons in Pomodoro and run my timer it is not getting the updated time. It still runs on the time that is there in my html. I am using .html() to get the contents of the time div. I even tried text()
@fez994 it is nested. two issues, however:
1) the text inside the <p> is incorrect. please check what the waypoint asks you do
2) you changed the value of the link in the <a>. don't use the freecodecamp.com link. use the original value (http://www.freecatphotoapp.com) instead
Now nest your existing a element within a new p element so that the surrounding paragraph says "View more cat photos", but where only "cat photos" is a link, and the rest of the text is plain text.
@Rageaholic maybe targetArr is not array or is undefined
Oct 29 2015 10:05
the full code is
function mutation(arr) {
    "use strict";
    var flag = true,
        targetStr = arr.toString([0]),
        targetArr = targetStr.split,
        queryStr = arr.toString([1]),
        queryArr = queryStr.split(""),
        i = 0,
        temp = queryArr[0],
        tempNum;
    for (i; i < queryArr.length; i = i + 1) {
    temp = queryArr[i];
    tempNum = targetArr.indexOf(temp);
        if (tempNum === -1) {
            flag = false;
        }
    }
}
mutation(["hello", "hey"]);
can someone help me with this Waypoint: Use Bracket Notation to Find the NthtoLast Character in a String
In order to get the last letter of a string, you can subtract one from the string's length.
For example, you can get the value of the third-to-last letter of the var firstName = "Charles" string by using firstName[firstName.length - 3]
Use bracket notation to find the second-to-last character in the lastName string.
Try looking at the thirdToLastLetterOfFirstName variable declaration if you get stuck.
With CSS, there are hundreds of CSS properties that you can use to change the way an element looks on your page.
When you entered <h2 style="color: red">CatPhotoApp</h2>, you were giving that individual h2 element an inline style
That's one way to add style to an element, but a better way is by using CSS, which stands for Cascading Style Sheets
At the top of your code, create a style element like this:
<style>
</style>
Inside that style element, you can create a CSS selector for all h2 elements. For example, if you wanted all h2 elements to be red, your style element would look like this:
<style>
  h2 {color: red;}
</style>
Note that it's important to have both opening and closing curly braces ({ and }) around each element's style. You also need to make sure your element's style is between the opening and closing style tags. Finally, be sure to add the semicolon to the end of each of your element's styles.
Delete your h2 element's style attribute and instead create a CSS style element. Add the necessary CSS to turn all h2 elements blue.
Classes are reusable styles that can be added to HTML elements.
Here's an example CSS class declaration:
<style>
.blue-text {
color: blue;
  }
</style>
You can see that we've created a CSS class called blue-text within the <style> tag.
You can apply a class to an HTML element like this:
<h2 class="blue-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>
Note that in your CSS style element, classes should start with a period. In your HTML elements' class declarations, classes shouldn't start with a period.
Instead of creating a new style element, try removing the h2 style declaration from your existing style element, then replace it with the class declaration for .red-text
Create a CSS class called red-text and apply it to your h2 element.
:point_right: tips on how to become a good pair programmer [wiki]
Pair programming is a great way to learn programming! Read why.
  1. Communicate well with your partner. Voice chat will make communication easy, let you focus on learning, and will allow you to use your time effectively.
  2. Before you start coding: decide together with your partner how your workflow should look so that both you and your partner can benefit from the time spent coding. An example of a good workflow:
    • Read through and discuss the problem to make sure you understand it.
    • Solve the problem with pseudo-code by identifying the steps you need to take in order to get from the given inputs to the expected result.
    • Create your actual solution
  3. When explaining things: Ask questions to guide your partner's thoughts instead of just showing the answer right away. This will let him or her think about the problem and make it easier for them to learn.
  4. Finally, be open to your partner's ideas, respect each other and have fun! :)
can somebody help me out i have this hover effect on my pomodoro clock. its finished functionality-wise im just adding some transition effects. the problem is how can I keep the other elements not moving while I do the hover effect? I wonder if pushing the elements up using JS while the hover is in effect will work http://codepen.io/mochiii/pen/NGMXpe?editors=001
@ReeganArockiasmy Just like the example. The name "val" is arbitrary and could be any allowed variable name. It is used inside your inner function to refer to the individual element of oldArray.
var newArray = oldArray.map(function(val){
  return /* add three to each value */;
});
@mochiii add class controls to the container holding the buttons:
<div class="controls text-center btn-group">
        <button class="btn btn-danger" id="countdownPause">Pause</button>
        <button class="btn btn-warning" id="countdownReset">Reset</button>
:point_right: bonfire seek and destroy [wiki]
Explanation:
This problem is a bit tricky because you have to familiarize yourself with Arguments, as you will have to work with two or more but on the script you only see two. Many people hardcode this program for three arguments. You will remove any number from the first argument that is the same as any other other arguments.
h4r1m4u
@h4r1m4u
is controls class a predefined in bootstrap? @h4r1m4u
h4r1m4u
@h4r1m4u
Oct 29 2015 13:49
in a larger project, you might want to use the .btn-group and .btn somewhere else and have them floated as bootstrap does. so adding the class controls on the div ensures that you change the style only for that particular div and buttons
no, it's a custom class. it could be anything
i just called it 'controls' because it's got the buttons controlling your clock in it
Hello all...I'm just getting started with code camp (I'm a noob) but I'm stuck at the following:
Your p element should have the text "View more " (with a space after it).
This is my code: <p>View more <a href="http://www.freecatphotoapp.com">cat photos</a> </p>
I don't understand what I'm missing
*I added the space after "View more" with the same outcome
Javascript lessons are quite bad in my opinion, is impossible to understand anything , they don't explain where you should put everything and why.
Not only can you pop() data off of the end of an array, you can also push() data onto the end of an array.
Push ["dog", 3] onto the end of the myArray variable.
seriously how am i suppost to do that? I don't even know the code
Arnis Jaundzeikars
@SangSatori
Oct 29 2015 16:52
@fez994: I'm not sure I understand the problem (I've had prior JS experience) -- myArray.push(data), where data can be an array like ["dog", 3] should do it. You need to call the .push() method on the array and pass it some kind of data, in which case which gets referenced by 'myArray'.
Oct 29 2015 17:47
I made a couple of rather ugly padding fixes to keep those icons in there, but dragging (or opening the console for example), drags that social media div out of the header
By making the mobile view window slightly smaller than an iphone 4 view for example, it will stick out. I am just wondering why that is
@PHPGator I will check it out
@PHPGator Setting the width to 100 in a media query seems to do the trick, but I wish I knew how to make the header a bit more robust, so that it would just cover the icons regardless. Thanks though, I will use it for now as the fix
Hello Help Room. I'm really intent on making a jumbotron on my portfolio that's a bit clear and to have text on top of it that's completely solid. The problem seems to be that opacity ALWAYS carries to the child element and cannot be reversed. Some sources online seem to suggest using a table, but that didn't really change anything for me except to make my text disappear.
Another option I'm trying is to create a separate identical div that's not a jumbotron, just text, and position it on top. But, since I want the page to different sizes of browser windows, I'm thinking that I want to get the position of the jumbotron element and set the position of the text div to that location. Would I be able to use bootstrap or css to do that or would that require jQuery?
Or am I thinking about that wrongly?
Hi has anyone else done the Waypoint: Delete Properties from a JavaScript Object recently. It says "Let's delete the "tails" property from myDog." in the description but then only works if you delete the "bark" property. I'm not sure what is going one...
@JoelMSwensen in this case, this is only about following conventions and good practices. You do not need IIFE in that particular example.
Hey, guys, I'm a beginner with regex. I've had a huge list of scrambled characters and words, buy I managed to narrow it down to a list of words separated by newline. They all have the length equal to twelve (12), so each word will be considered a small array of letters (from 0 to 11).
What I want to do is to keep only the words that respect the following rules: arr[3] is the same as the arr[9], arr[5] is the same as arr[7] AND all the other letters are different from each other. How can I use regular expressions (or any other decent solution) for my request?
Thanks, @marzelin. So the code is something like
for(var i = 0; i < myArray.length; i++)
   if(myArray[i].charAt(5) == myArray[i].charAt(7) && myArray[i].charAt(3) == myArray[i].charAt(9)){
 console.log(myArray[i]);
}
@JoelMSwensen also, with the IIFE, parameters and function declarations only live as long as the function runs. Without IIFE they might live longer that needed.
I thought about it some more and figured it out.
mchouse
@housewar
Oct 29 2015 19:57
When I countdown from 3 to -3, it feels like this 3..2..1..0..0..-1..-2..-3. This is because .99s and -.99s are both cut off as 0s. I pulled out my phone and started a timer at 10s, and it showed the 10 for a solid second. My own script would have immediately switched to 9.99s which would be cut-off to 9s. To avoid the double 0, I'm going to round everything up. This will work when I hit -1 because it's not really -1, it's -(abs(ceiling(timeA - timeB))). Thanks for listening.
hi i need help with this one Only add one class with each of your three selectors.
$(document).ready(function() {
$("button").addClass
$(".btn")
$("#target1").addClass("animated shake btn-primary")
Use the $("button") selector.
Use the $(".btn") selector.
Use the $("#target1") selector.
Only add one class with each of your three selectors.
Your #target1 element should have the classes animated‚ shake and btn-primary.
Only use jQuery to add these classes to the element.
Question: Is the code given in the Waypoint: Prefilter JSON wrong?
If I just paste in the filter where it says it doesnt filter and doesn't render pics.
The line
val = "<img src = '" + val.imageLink + "'>"
should be this, right?
@fez994: It seems your code populates the array twice -- try removing the upper loop if you've added it there yourself.
Chris
@Aoxom
Oct 29 2015 21:48
@fez994 you hardcoded values into your array, you need it to start out empty.. like var myArray = [];
Hey guys, I'm really confused by this all, I have to make object properties Private using the example but I don't see in the example how they distinguish between public and private
var Car = function() {
 // this is a private variable
  var gear = 1;
 // this is a private function (also known as a private method)
  function addStyle(styleMe){
    return 'The Current Gear Is: ' + styleMe;
  }
 // this is a public method
  this.getGear = function() {
    return addStyle(this.gear);
  };
};
var Bike = function() {
  // Only change code below this line.
  this.speed = 100;
  function addUnit(value) {
    return value + "KM/H";
  }
  getSpeed = function () {
    return addUnit(speed);
  };
};
this is my code, I have't changed anything so far
Chris
@Aoxom
Oct 29 2015 21:55
@fez994 thats because you cheated and hardcoded the result they wanted, and your if statement is only affecting ourArray and not myArray
David Wilbanks
@dwilbank68
Oct 29 2015 22:26
by using 'this', you insured that it will be defined for every clone made out of this constructor function
Aleksander Gębicki
@Takumar
Oct 29 2015 22:26
@VeryPlite I think you have to make speed private, remove "this." from declaration.
VeryPlite
@VeryPlite
Oct 29 2015 22:26
@dwilbank68 I tried this:```
 this.getSpeed = function () {
    return addUnit(speed);
  };
oh wait I see what you mean
David Wilbanks
@dwilbank68
Oct 29 2015 22:27
and that will be shared with all the instances (clones) of this Constructor
if you use var, then it won't be shared
Matan Kushner
@matchai
Oct 29 2015 22:28
@tlovett88: Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox both have excellent developer tools.
VeryPlite
Oct 29 2015 22:28
it looks like that is already what you wrote
Matan Kushner
@matchai
Oct 29 2015 22:28
So you'd need to do the opposite of what you did with the speed variable.
VeryPlite
@VeryPlite
Oct 29 2015 22:29
but when I add this. to getSpeed like I did above, it doesn't work, maybe I'm doing it wrong?
Matan Kushner
@matchai
Oct 29 2015 22:29
Adding "this" makes it available in all instances of the constructor (making it public).
// Only change code below this line.
var myCar = new Car(); {
David Wilbanks
you're not building a second Constructor, so drop the this
you're dealing with a little car clone, so it's simply myCar.engines = whatever
