@talihashi for a sake of that exercise you are assigning that number to a variable, to show that you can. To show off property .length. NOrmally you could just write

return lastname.length;

but exercise just tells you to assign it.

Erland Lami
@Texber
Nov 25 2015 00:08
so @Takumar @iccomq curly brackets are used to add different classes inside a style tag?
nf15
@nf15
Nov 25 2015 00:08

tried over but didnt work..says: Delete your h2 element's style attribute and instead create a CSS style element. Add the necessary CSS to turn all h2 elements blue...<style>

h2 {color: blue;}

</style>

all others correct but one...Your h2 element should be blue.
Erland Lami
@Texber
Nov 25 2015 00:09
And I'm not clear on how that applied to both elements although it did work
Bill
@kirah1314
Nov 25 2015 00:10
@nf15 paste your full code? Did you do this part: Delete your h2 element's style attribute?
iccomq
@iccomq
Nov 25 2015 00:10
@Texber they are used to tell when particular style definition starts and ends. You can define classes, you can change classes in css. But it's not that every element in css is a class.
when you defined style for "p". It was applied for every p tag on a page
and you had 2 right? so it was applied to both of them
nf15
@nf15
Nov 25 2015 00:11
I did
ok
Aleksander Gębicki
@Takumar
Nov 25 2015 00:11

@Texber your CSS class can have many attributes and you have to join them in one block with curly brackets:

.blue-text {
  color: blue;
  background-color: white;
}

just like you do with JS functions. It's a block of code, you have to know where it start and where ends.

Bill
@kirah1314
Nov 25 2015 00:11
paste the full code
nf15
@nf15

Nov 25 2015 00:31

iccomq
@iccomq
Nov 25 2015 00:33
@RyanPickle so the number between 0 and 0.99 times 10 gives you number, but its pretty ugly. To achieve, whole number you need to round it. its just what Math.floor does. It rounds down.
@RyanPickle you forgot ``` at the end there

Nov 25 2015 02:43
@viseth89 Links are created in an "anchor" element which is written as an <a> tag. "href" is an element within the <a> which defines the web address the anchor is pointing to written as <a href="http://www.website.com"></a> remember to close your tags and to write your text (what displays on page) inbetween the <a> and the </a>
@viseth89 if you think you have all the elements sorted (anchor, href, text, closing tag) reread all the code you have entered to make sure it is spelled correctly an in the right place in the document.

I want to know if var word1 in the possition that i haves in the for loop, have any match with the array word2
do you understand?
i tried that before, and it doesn't work because you're comparing the content of word1[i] with the content of word2[i]
for example, if i have "h", "e", "y" in the array word 1 and "e", "h","y" in the array word 2
word1[0] and word2[0] doesn't match
but they haves the string "h"

To get data into a function you need to pass it in via arguments. To get data out of a function you need to put it in the return statement. For example:
function allPrivate(name){
   var catName = name;
}
allPrivate("Sophia");
console.log(catName); // error

function madePublic(name){
   var catName = name;
  return catName;
}
madePublic("Sophia");
catName; // "Sophia"

if(word1.length<word2.length){
a = word1.length;
}
else{
a=word2.length;
}
console.log (a);
for (var i = 0; i <=a; i++){
if(word1[i] === word2[i]){
b[i]=i;

Hello!
I'm back.
Julie Myers
@BlueOceanView
Nov 25 2015 04:08
@somepulp I'm looking at the waypoint. One thing to remember: If you use the var keyword when creating a variable inside of a function it makes the variable local/private to the function. However, if you fail to use the var keyword, than the variable is registered in the global scope. Like I said, it's really important to understand scope (global and function scope) before a lot of other things in JS make sense.
@somepulp You're welcome.
Joy
@somepulp
Nov 25 2015 04:09
@BlueOceanView ohh
@BlueOceanView so if the variable is created within the function, its not accessible outside the function ?
Julie Myers
@BlueOceanView
Nov 25 2015 04:10
@somepulp Correct, if you use the var keyword.
@somepulp Well, actually it's a bit more complex then that...
Joy
@somepulp
Nov 25 2015 04:10
@BlueOceanView would there be other keywords to use to create variables?
Julie Myers
@BlueOceanView
Nov 25 2015 04:12

In JS you can create a variable without using var.

//proper way
var catName = "Sophia";

//bad way
catName = "Sophia";

Both ways above will create a new variable in JS. However, what scope they are in (private to a function or put in the global scope) is the big difference.

Miguel Angel Ramos
@miguel-ramos
Nov 25 2015 04:12
To further add what @BlueOceanView is saying, a variable inside a function is called a local variable, which are said to have local scope, meaning it can only be accessed within the function.
Julie Myers
@BlueOceanView
Nov 25 2015 04:12
var is the only keyword for creating variables.
Joy
@somepulp
Nov 25 2015 04:13

Joy
@somepulp
Nov 25 2015 04:14
@BlueOceanView will check it out. is there a cost for it?
@miguel-ramos @BlueOceanView so in terms of scope, there's local, global, and is there another level ?
Julie Myers
@BlueOceanView
Nov 25 2015 04:14
Well, there is something called the scope chain. So, let's say you have a function inside another function. The outside function has a variable that the inside function wants to use. And it can! Why? Because of the scope chain.
Miguel Angel Ramos
@miguel-ramos
Nov 25 2015 04:14
On the other hand, a variable created outside of a function is called a global variable, which can be used outside and inside of a function.
Julie Myers
@BlueOceanView
Nov 25 2015 04:14
@somepulp The class will be $15.00 for life time access if you act within the next 2 days.

Joy
@somepulp
Nov 25 2015 04:15
i'm vaguely remembering stuff like in case you had to use functions in like different modules or something, i'm sure im not saying the correct word
so local, strictly within function, global can be used by other functions
Julie Myers
@BlueOceanView
Nov 25 2015 04:16
@miguel-ramos It's a classon JavaScript. You will get some of the best explanations on how some of JS works anywhere.
If a variable or a function are in the global scope, they are accessible from anywhere in your coding.
Miguel Angel Ramos
@miguel-ramos
Nov 25 2015 04:17
Yes, but remember that a global variable must be declared outside of a function. Once declared, you can assign a value inside any amount of functions or blocks of code that you'd like.
Julie Myers
@BlueOceanView
Nov 25 2015 04:18

Joy
@somepulp
Nov 25 2015 04:18
interesting
question; what if for some reason, a global variable is the same name as a parameter for a function/
how does js handle that?
does it take the value for the function from its input or from the global variable declaration?
Julie Myers
@BlueOceanView
Nov 25 2015 04:22
@miguel-ramos It's an at your own pace course. The instructor is pretty good at answering most questions.
@somepulp Scoping rules and understand variable shadowing will answer that question for you. To answer your question...

@somepulp
Nov 25 2015 04:24
@BlueOceanView okay, will explore that perhaps tomorrow
Julie Myers
@BlueOceanView
Nov 25 2015 04:24
@somepulp When the JS engine first starts looking for a variable name is will look in the local scope first. If it doesn't find it there, then it will go up to the next scope and see if it has it...this is what the scope chain is for.
Joy
@somepulp

codeAndJustCode
@codeAndJustCode
Nov 25 2015 06:39
@apekearo http://www.htmlcodetutorial.com/_H35n.html this will help u
bascically all header tag are use for heading and subheading of any article/paragraph but difference is in there font size. h1 has large font size and it will keep decreasing till h6 tag
@apekearo http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tryit.asp?filename=tryhtml_headers check this to see the difference
Rishav Kumar
@rishav171
Nov 25 2015 06:44
consider them as importance h1 being the highest. it is used as main heading
then you can give small headings with smaller fonts .. which will foloow h2 or h3 ...
h4 to h6 are rarely used
h1 is just the way of representing your main heading.It will automatically be a bog font set according to standard heading sizes

I guess it's the new waypoint Waypoint: Make Unique Objects by Passing Parameters to our Constructor
You are probably supposed to add some parameters to the definition of Car, which take the place of the old numbers 4,1,1.

@una720302 No, your function should look like this

var Car = function(wheels, seats, engines) {
// do something with the vars
}

That way you can PASS IN the values when you CALL the function.

Hi! Can anyone please help me to spot what is wrong with my function? I'm working on the tic tac toe (zipline) and this checks if there is a winner. It does return the right value, but it does not return the right message. The function is commented below:
$scope.finalMessage = "";

    $scope.checkWinner = function() {
      var human, computer, x;

      /*board.wins = [
        [0, 1, 2],
        [3, 4, 5],

        [0, 3, 6],
        [1, 4, 7],
        [2, 5, 8],

        [0, 4, 8],
        [2, 4, 6]
      ];

      board.state = new Array(9);
      here, 1 or -1 will be pushed at each move of player or computer

      */

      for (var combo = 0; combo < board.wins.length; combo++) {
        computer = human = board.COMBOSIZE; // 3
        for (var w = 0; w < board.wins[combo].length; w++) {
          x = board.wins[combo][w];
          if (typeof board.state[x] != 'undefined') {
            if (board.state[x] > 0) {
              computer--;
            }
            if (board.state[x] < 0) {
              human--;
            }
          }

        if (computer == 0) {
          $scope.finalMessage = "I win";
          return 1;
        }
        if (human == 0) {
          // during the whole game, it prints 'You win' and only when computer

@tjctw I know what you mean. Started a few days ago on it. My approach is to research bootstrap and go from there
@tjctw yesterday I finished the navbar fixed to the top, the buttons and the spacing. It does seem daunting, but take one thing at a time and find out which classes to use and tweak them in you css if needed. You can do it!

Waypoint: Make Circular Images with a Border Radius
In addition to pixels, you can also specify a border-radius using a percentage.

Give your cat photo a border-radius of 50%.

Run tests (ctrl + enter)
Reset Help Bug
Your image should have a border radius of 50%, making it perfectly circular.
Be sure to use a percentage instead of a pixel value.
