@cjg040103 you get a lot of derp moments when you learn. Also, a lot of them happen because of syntax. Here are two useful pages: http://jshint.com/ to check for syntax errors and http://www.pythontutor.com/javascript.html#mode=edit to see the steps of your code, remember to call it if using function so you understand how it works and where there are errors

:point_right: bonfire no repeats please [wiki]

Problem Explanation:

  • This task requires us to look at each possible permutation of a string. This is best done using a recursion function. Being able to build a function which collects all permutations of a string is a common interview question, so there is no shortage of tutorials out there on how to do this, in many different code languages.
  • This task can still be daunting even after watching a tutorial. You will want to send each new use of the function 3 inputs: 1. a new string (or character array) that is being built, 2. a position in your new string that's going to be filled next, and 3. an idea of what characters (more specifically positions) from the original string have yet to be used. The pseudo code will look something like this:

    ```
    var str = ???;
    perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far){
    if(current string is finished) {
    print current string;
    }else{
    for(var i = 0; i < str.length; i++) {
    if(str[i] has not been used) {
      put str[i] into the current position;
      mark str[i] as used
      perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far)
      unmark str[i] as used because another branch in the tree for i + 1 will still likely use it;
    }
    }
    }
    }
@thejcode24 also: If the property is found, return that property's value. If not, return "Not Found".
When you will be sure that myObj contains property checkProp you can use that variable (parameter) to get access to value of that property in object myObj
Would appreciate any help
Aleksander Gębicki
@Takumar
Feb 04 2016 00:48
@VinCoding yes but add <img> tag to this.
<img class="img-responsive" src="http://bit.ly/fcc-running-cats">
@Gwater17 it saved ratio of image when it was resized. When you use: width and height it will not save ratio.
.strange-image {
  width: 100px;
  height: 2px;
}
Adam Snetiker
@ajsnetiker
Feb 04 2016 00:49
@Gwater17 that IS the width. In web terms theres only width and height. Width is left to right and height is top to bottom.
Or like @Takumar said it kept the same ratio
@volaix rename your object from val to lookup, and then assign lookup[val] to your result variable.
That should be done in such way, because val is name of parameter of your function, so don't overwrite it.
Needing some help with something I’m tinkering with. I’m doing Seek and Destroy and have a theory question. If I’m running a function “myArr” and that is equal to ([1,2,3,x,y] x, y). Would myArr[0] = [1,2,3,x,y]? myArr1 = x, and myArr2 = y? What kind of code would I need to isolate this?
:point_right: code formatting [wiki]
Inline code
This an inline `<paste code here>` code formatting with a single backtick(`) at start and end around the code.
Code Block
```js ⇦ Type 3 backticks and then press [shift + enter ⏎] (type js or html or css)

<paste your code here>,
then press [shift + enter ⏎]

``` ⇦ Type 3 backticks, then press [enter ⏎]
@Utkarshbhimte: Try something like
$.ajax( {
    url: "https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php",
    jsonp: "callback",
    dataType: 'jsonp',
    data: {
        action: "opensearch",
        search: "india",
        format: "json"
    },
    xhrFields: { withCredentials: true },
    success: function(response) { console.log(response) }
});
The reasons for this should be explained in reading up on HTTP - https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP
Please note that this is nothing more than just an adapted version of a solution found on Stack Overflow. There's a bunch of theory behind this, why it works the way it does.
@LDWX: Fix your loop. It throws an error when it tries to look up a value that's one position out of bounds.
Just did a console.log(i) in the loop to see how far it goes before the error gets thrown.
@LDWX yes it did saying array[i+1] is undefined so modified your code
function findLongestWord(str) {
var array = str.split(" ");
console.log(array);
var longest = 0;
for (var i = 0; i < array.length; i++){
if (array[i].length >longest){
longest=array[i].length;
}
}
return longest;
}
findLongestWord("The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog");
If you're using Bootstrap, it has the styles written for you - and CSS cascades in a way that has "more specific" styles applied with higher priotity than non-specific. Think of, say, .col > h1 or just h1 - the former is more specific. Of course !important overrides everything else. I'm not sure abut the exact inner workings of Bootstrap however.
Hello guys, following the example in the code I was able to make a for loop and pass. However, I don't fully understand all of the parts of this for loop and what it is doing. Could someone please explain to me? I don't just want passing code, I want to understand it also.
// Example
var ourArr = [ 9, 10, 11, 12];
var ourTotal = 0;
for (var i = 0; i < ourArr.length; i++) {
  ourTotal += ourArr[i];
}
// Setup
var myArr = [ 2, 3, 4, 5, 6];
// Only change code below this line
var total = 0;
for (var i = 0; i < myArr.length; i++) {
  total += myArr[i];
}
@AustinThornley So, you're taking the length of the array (ourArr which has 4 elements. You're then starting at 0 and running through the loop until i (variable that you set is 4. At the end of each loop you're adding 1 to the i variable.
I am having a problem here :
Create a class called thick-green-border that puts a 10-pixel-wide green border with a style of solid around an HTML element, and apply that class to your cat photo.
Remember that you can apply multiple classes to an element by separating each class with a space within its class attribute. For example:
<img class="class1 class2">
here is my code:
<link href="http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Lobster" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
<style>
.red-text {
color: red;
}
h2 {
font-family: Lobster, Monospace;
}
p {
font-size: 16px;
font-family: Monospace;}
.thick-green-border {
border-width: 10px;
border-style: solid;}
.smaller-image {
width: 100px;}
</style>
<h2 class="red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>
<img class="smaller-image" class= "thick-green-border" src="https://bit.ly/fcc-relaxing-cat">
<p class="red-text">Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>
for (var i = 0; i < str.length; i++){
for (var j=0; j < charArr.length; j ++){
if (charArr[j] > 65 && charArr[j]<78 ){
else charArr[j] = charArr[j] - 13;
@nruck1 Your data structure was fine but you have to use the structure to look up the value (val and save it to the result variable
So, result = lookup[val];
I've done Unity, Android, Java, Node, PHP, SQL, Html, CSS in some form or fashion for a very long time. Like I said just off and on. Back when I was 16 (32 now) I could make a full web application in a day or so.
Yea, you could knock this stuff out fairly quick. The first section was done within a couple hours. I stopped and went away for 4 months or so and came back to complete it. I've been doing a lot of javascript via node the past month. Took me a second to remember little things with html and css (mainly bootstrap stuff).
only failing test is "Only add one class with each of your three selectors. "
Although it is possible to add multiple classes in a single .addClass() call, let's add them to the same element in three different ways.
Using each of the above jQuery selectors and the addClass() function:
Add the animated class to all elements with type button.
Add the shake class to all the buttons with class .btn.
Add the btn-primary class to the button with id #target1.
Salman Shahid
Create a class called gray-background with the background-color of gray. Assign this class to your div element. @newbie-07
Devashish
@newbie-07
Feb 04 2016 07:44
@wordaddict ...simple...where you have <div> just add <div class = grey-background> and above between style tags add .gray-background{ background-color: gray}
@wordaddict In HTML if you want to design any part of your webpage you just need to create <div> , add class and style it in CSS...you will do more of this in further challenges
@wordaddict Done?
// Setup
var myObj = {
function checkObj(checkProp) {
myObj.hasOwnProperty(checkProp);
// Your Code Here
if(myObj.hasOwnProperty(checkProp)) {
else { return "Not Found";}
@CrazyboOoy123 myObj.’pet’ doesn’t make sense
while myObj[‘pet’] is a correct syntax
Brian
@sludge256
Feb 04 2016 08:00
@CrazyboOoy123 if you use dot notation with variables
return myObj.checkProp;
It will look up a property called checkProp
instead of looking up the value of checkProp
bracket notation will convert the variable to its value
I am at 114 and learning jQuery..I can't complete this task.. I believe i'm doing everything ok, But don't know why it's not working. So here are the tasks: Use the $("button") selector.
Use the $(".btn") selector.
Use the $("#target1") selector.
Only add one class with each of your three selectors.
Your #target1 element should have the classes animated‚ shake and btn-primary.
Only use jQuery to add these classes to the element.
$(document).ready(function() {
$("button").addClass ('animated');
$(".btn").addClass ('shake');
$("#target1").addClass ('shake');
});
This is the code..
All of them are green except "Only add one class with each of your three selectors."
Can anyone help?
currently doing the calculator bonfire, i'm writing the javascript for the buttons to show on my input display 'pantalla' and while the numers do work well, im having trouble with '(' and ')' cause they show as object object instead of ( or ) ,
$('#abre').click(function(){$('#pantalla').val($('#pantalla').val($('#pantalla').text() + '(' ))});
Anyone knows why this does happen? (abre is the button for '(' pantalla is my display)
@LDWX You can store arguments on a variable and loop the arguments inside the filter callback function, or you can first turn arguments into an array and use indexOf on it inside callback.
