Hello
Collin
@collinferry
Feb 09 2016 01:37
Can someone check this Palindrome code? It works, but I can't help thinking it could be cleaner:
' ' '
function palindrome(str) {
var small = str.toLowerCase();
var alpha = small.replace(/\W/g, ''); //removing all non-alphanumeric characters
var beta = alpha.replace(/_/, ''); //except underscores which are removed here
var splitArray = beta.split("");
splitArray.reverse();
var backward = splitArray.reduce(function (a, b) {
return a + b;
});
if (backward == beta) {
return true;
}
return false;
}
' ' '
Ah gross, I failed at formatting.

@collinferry I guess instead of if(backward == beta) return true; you can just do: return backward == beta; because it will only return true if the statement backward == beta is true.

@jaajapie1 Pretty sure you just have to put one class per jQuery selector so it would look something like
`<script>
$(document).ready(function() {
$("button").addClass("animated");
$(".btn").addClass("shake");
$("#target1").addClass("btn-primary");

});
</script>Note that each jQuery selector (ex$("button")) only has one class (in this case"animated"`)

Whoops.

@JennHardy
something like

<div class="row">
   <div class="col-xs-12 col-md-4">
   </div>

</div>

if the screen is small it will take up the whole row

@JennHardy here is a temporay fix to your problem

#portRow1 {
  display:inline-block;
  padding: 16px;
  margin:0px auto!important;
}

#portRow2 {
  display:inline-block;
  padding: 16px;
  margin:0px auto!important;
}

however you need to restructure your divs if you want a proper solution

Only add one class with each of your three selectors.

<script>
$(document).ready(function() {
$("button").addClass("animated");;
$(".btn").addClass("shake");
$("#target1").addClass("animated shake btn-primary");
});
</script> Sorry ! I can't sent image .

@EskimoBurd I remember it talking briefly about the alt tag in one lesson. Alt is what will be displayed when the img can't be loaded. Its important to have because if you don't have it people with screen readers can't access your page and you can actually get in trouble from the American's with disabilities act for not making your site handicap accessible.

I want to get this https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?format=json&action=query&generator=search&gsrnamespace=0&gsrlimit=10&prop=pageimages|extracts&pilimit=max&exintro&explaintext&exsentences=1&exlimit=max&gsrsearch=india&callback=JSON_CALLBACK, this is what used in fcc sample pen
but I came out with this https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=opensearch&search=india&namespace=0&format=jsonfm. I am even unable to operate on the first one coz 'No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource. Origin 'null' is therefore not allowed access.'

@omie86 You need to close the curly brace of the preceedng expression (the one with the p element)
@omie86 That's why .smaller-image is highlighted in red.
@omie86 You need a closing brace after the font-family declaration

Was asking this question in another chatroom but I don't understand the reasoning completely... Can someone please explain why exactly it messes the program up if I put the global var count inside the function, turning it into a local variable? My sense is that bc it is inside the variable now, it is re-declaring the variable somehow but I don't get exactly WHERE that messes it up.. Thanks
var count = 0;

function cc(card) {
  // Only change code below this line
  switch(card) {
    case 2:
    case 3:
    case 4:
    case 5:
    case 6:
      count = count + 1;
      break;

    case 10:
    case "J":
    case "Q":
    case "K":
    case "A":
      count = count - 1;
      break;

    default:
      count = count;
  }

  if (count > 0) {
    return count + " " +  "Bet";
  }

  else {
    return count + " " + "Hold";
  }
  // Only change code above this line
}

// Add/remove calls to test your function.
// Note: Only the last will display
cc(2); cc(3); cc(7); cc('K'); cc('A');
Rex Schrader
@SaintPeter
Feb 09 2016 04:16
@TyRyanR The issue is that cc is designed to modify the global. The count needs to be maintained from card to card. If you have a local, the there is no "memory" of prior cards.
TyRy1
@TyRy1
Feb 09 2016 04:18
So let's use a real example @SaintPeter
Boom.. I move var count = 0 right underneath the function.... What happens under the first block of cases? Right underneath case 6 when I use the statement count = count + 1. Does that not come out to mean COUNT = 1 anymore?
Rex Schrader
@SaintPeter
Feb 09 2016 04:19
@TyRyanR Sure - if you look at the example from the bottom (the test code), you see cards 2, 3, 7, K and A - those have values of 1, 1, 0, -1, -1 respectively.
TyRy1
@TyRy1
Feb 09 2016 04:20
Correct, I'm following you
Rex Schrader
@SaintPeter
Feb 09 2016 04:20
@TyRyanR Sure, that means that count = 1 . . . but then you call it again, what is count equal to? What if you had cards 2, 3, 4 - those all have a +1 value, which gives you a total of 3. But the only way to remember that count was 1 is to have it be a global, because each time the function is called, everything inside it is refreshed - including a local variable.
TyRy1
@TyRy1
Feb 09 2016 04:21
^ THAT'S IT.. That's what was missing. Got it
Rex Schrader
@SaintPeter
Feb 09 2016 04:21
@TyRyanR Try to think about each time the function is called it's like the first time it is called. If you have a var count inside it, that's a completely fresh version of that variable which has no value. No record of prior runs, on the first or the 50th call.
TyRy1
@TyRy1
Feb 09 2016 04:22
The part that each time it's called, it refreshes
Rex Schrader
@SaintPeter
Feb 09 2016 04:22

TyRy1
@TyRy1
Feb 09 2016 04:22
Thanks so much. It all came together with that.
Rex Schrader
@SaintPeter
Feb 09 2016 04:22
That actually sounds like something we should cover explicitly
TyRy1
@TyRy1
Feb 09 2016 04:23
Yeah makes sense. So let me see if I understand before I head out
If the variable was local, and I happen to only call it once, with sayyyyyy... 4. That would work and turn out to be +1
SaintPeter @SaintPeter nods
TyRy1
@TyRy1
Feb 09 2016 04:25
The problem comes when I add 2 or more cards, because then the function no longer remembers the sum of the previous calls, and it resets back to the initial value everytime a new value is called, therefore it's just going to keep returning only the most recent call?
Rex Schrader
@SaintPeter
Feb 09 2016 04:26
Correct.
Think of the global variable as the "long term memory"
TyRy1
@TyRy1
Feb 09 2016 04:26
Awesome. Had no idea local variables get amnesia everytime multiple calls are made. Good to know, thanks!
Rex Schrader
@SaintPeter
Feb 09 2016 04:27
Sure thing
Cristián Berríos
@crisberrios
Feb 09 2016 04:29
@TyRyanR if you need them to "remember" that's when you start using closures
function outer() {
var mem = 0;
return function(b) {
mem = mem + b;
return mem;
}
}
so you can do var myFunc = outer();
then myFunc(1) // 1
myFunc(1) // 2
TyRy1
@TyRy1
Feb 09 2016 04:32
@crisberrios Hm interesting so it is possible for a local variable to be remembered inside a function. A little more advanced than where I am but hopefully the FCC tutorials get to that point?

Nest all of your radio buttons inside one div with the class row.
Nest each of your radio buttons inside its own div with the class col-xs-6.
Make sure each of your div elements has a closing tag.

<div class="row">
<div class="col-xs-6"><label><input type="radio" name="indoor-outdoor"> Indoor</label></div>
<div class="col-xs=6"><label><input type="radio" name="indoor-outdoor"> Outdoor</label></div>
</div>

@rohanpota looks all right
@rohanpota refresh the browser and try again and see if that works
@rohanpota wait the second time you have col-xs=6....it should be col-xs-6

Any react js person here, why do I have to do var that = this;? Is there another method, so if I don't do the that -> this trick, the console throws an error that newOne is not a property of undefined, so it tells me "this" is undefined.
var Test = React.createClass({
  getInitialState: function() {
    return {
            items: ["One", "Dos", "Three", "Cuatro"]
    };
  },
    newOne: function(boton) {
        this.setState({items: this.state.items.concat(3)});
        console.log(boton.target);
    },
  render: function() {
        var that = this;
        var buttons = this.state.items.map(function(item, idx) {
            return <Button key={idx} handler={that.newOne} />
        });

    return (
            <div id="aplicacion">
          <h1>Hi, Learning React</h1>
                    {buttons}
            </div>

Blauelf
@Blauelf
Feb 09 2016 12:45
return ends the current function and returns the specified value. You return on the first character.
You could replace that return statement by if(arr[0].indexOf(myarr[i])===-1){return false;}, but would have to return true at the end of your function, outside the loop.

"Instructions
Declare and initialize a variable total to 0. Use a for loop to add the value of each element of the myArr array to total."

I have passed all the other checks, but the for loop check.

Here are the different checks:
total should be declared and initialized to 0
total should equal 20
You should use a for loop to iterate through myArr
Do not set total to 20 directly

:point_right: waypoint access array data with indexes [wiki]

Access Array Data with Indexes

We can access the data inside arrays using indexes.

Array indexes are written in the same bracket notation that strings use, except that instead of specifying a character, they are specifying an entry in the array.

For example:

var array = [1,2,3];
array[0]; //equals 1
var data = array[1];

@igorfilipe Don't declare variables outside your function. That usually leads to functions that don't work properly if called twice in a row, since they leave a changed variable which they don't expect to be changed on the next call. Declare inside instead where applicable.

:point_right: algorithm no repeats please [wiki]

Problem Explanation:

  • This task requires us to look at each possible permutation of a string. This is best done using a recursion function. Being able to build a function which collects all permutations of a string is a common interview question, so there is no shortage of tutorials out there on how to do this, in many different code languages.
  • This task can still be daunting even after watching a tutorial. You will want to send each new use of the function 3 inputs: 1. a new string (or character array) that is being built, 2. a position in your new string that's going to be filled next, and 3. an idea of what characters (more specifically positions) from the original string have yet to be used. The pseudo code will look something like this:

    ```
    var str = ???;
    perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far){
    if(current string is finished) {
    print current string;
    }else{
    for(var i = 0; i < str.length; i++) {
    if(str[i] has not been used) {
      put str[i] into the current position;
      mark str[i] as used
      perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far)
      unmark str[i] as used because another branch in the tree for i + 1 will still likely use it;
    }
    }
    }
    }
