:point_right: challenge using objects for lookups [wiki]

Challenge: Using Objects for Lookups

Objects can be thought of as a key/value storage, like a dictionary. If you have tabular data, you can use an object to "lookup" values rather than a switch statement or an if/else chain. This is most useful when you know that your input data is limited to a certain range.

Here is an example of a simple reverse alphabet lookup:

var alpha = {
  1:"Z",
  2:"Y",
  3:"X",
  4:"W",
  ...
  24:"C",
  25:"B",
  26:"A"
};
alpha[2]; // "Y"
alpha[24]; // "C"

@Ashraf-Farabi it's wanting you to convert the switch statement to a lookup table. Check out the example in the problem page. I'll have more in a second.

@lucianohd Where are you stuck at
use split/join to turn into an array and back, and operate on that array so that the first character of each item is upperCase

function titleCase(str) {
  var capt = str.toLowerCase();
  capt = capt.split(" ");
  for (var i = 0; i < capt.length; i++){

  }
  return capt;
}

titleCase("sHoRt AnD sToUt");
@Raincode well, when i put there capt = capt[i][0].toUpperCase;
on the for
'-' i'll try with replace

if str is a string it should address the first char but one moment I will check in jsbin

my matter is on replacing the first character of each word of the string, when i put like capt[0][0] = capt[0][0].toUpperCase i can't replace.
because it's read only
Alexander Køpke
@alexanderkopke
Feb 21 2016 00:45
yes strings are immutable so you have to create a new variable to store the new string in
if you iterate the array you can treat each item in the array as a string that you can assign to a new variable inside the for loop
you already created the array capt with the words in lowercase. Good job so far!

Hi guys, looking for some help on Arguments Optional, I don't know how to structure my return statement in order to accept the second argument pass, code below:

function add() {

  //console.log(arguments[0]);

  if (arguments.length == 2) {
    return arguments[0] + arguments[1];
  } else {
    return function sum(number) {

     return arguments[0] + number;

    };
  }
}

add(2)(3);

Current error add(2)(3); returns 6.

Luciano Hakime Dutra
@lucianohd
Feb 21 2016 02:33
You need 2 p elements with Kitty Ipsum text.
Make sure each of your p elements has a closing tag.
Your p element should contain the first few words of the provided additional kitty ipsum text.
Do not add a class attribute to your new p element.
Give elements with the p tag a font-size of 16px. Browser and Text zoom should be at 100%.

@dolani are you trying to add them to #target1?
Wait I see what you mean you're trying to do this:
$("#target1").addClass("animated");
$("#target1").addClass("shake");
$("#target1").addClass("btn-primary");
@dolani you just add them individually instead of all at once

Your img element should have the class thick-green-border.
Give your image a border width of 10px.
Give your image a border style of solid.
The border around your img element should be green.

@mkhadnot That's only applying your CSS to elements with .red-text as a class that are nested within h2 tags
@mkhadnot this is a more specific way of applying CSS. You want to remove that first h2 before .red-text and then apply the class to the h2 element you want to effect.
@mkhadnot did that work?

Here's my code:
function destroyer(arr) {
// Remove all the values

var l=arguments.length;

 function notWanted(arg){
   return arg!==this;
}

for (i=1;i<l;i++){
arr=arr.filter(notWanted,arguments[i]);

}

return arr;
}

destroyer([1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3], 2, 3);

@BabaJaguska I mean filtering only once and putting the loop inside the callback like this:
function destroyer(arr) {
  return arr.filter(function(val) {
    ???
  },arguments);
}

yeah usually you don't see it like that
@Ashraf-Farabi I think you can accomplish this with just 2 for loops
the first loop will iterate through each sub array
then the second loop with go through that sub array and process each value in it

@Ashraf-Farabi Return after the loop blocks. That is when you have gone through all the numbers.
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Feb 21 2016 11:35
it may be a good exercise to write down on paper what your code is doing
like go through each line of logic one by one as if you were running it
like for example, you're calling multiplyAll with an array
you set product = 1
now you setup a loop to go through the array, starting with i=0
then you setup a loop to go through the array arr[0]
and so on

Help Nesting for Loops @Masd925
CamperBot
@camperbot

:point_right: challenge nesting for loops [wiki]

Challenge: Nesting For Loops

If you have a multi-dimensional array, you can use the same logic as the prior Challenge to loop through both the array and any sub-arrays. Here is an example:

    var arr = [
      [1,2], [3,4], [5,6]
    ];
    for (var i=0; i < arr.length; i++) {
      for (var j=0; j < arr[i].length; j++) {
        console.log(arr[i][j]);
      }
    }

This outputs each sub-element in arr one at a time. Note that for the inner loop, we are checking the .length of arr[i], since arr[i] is itself an array.

Help Accessing Objects Properties with Variables
CamperBot
@camperbot
Feb 21 2016 11:43

:point_right: challenge accessing objects properties with variables [wiki]

Challenge: Accessing Objects Properties with Variables

Another use of bracket notation on objects is to use a variable to access a property. This can be very useful for iterating through lists of the object properties or for doing the lookup.

Here is an example of using a variable to access a property:

var someProp = "propName";
var myObj = {
  propName: "Some Value"
}

myObj[someProp]; // "Some Value"
Note that we do not use quotes around the variable name when using it to access the property because we are using the value of the variable, not the name

:point_right: brownie points [wiki]

The number beside your picture on Free Code Camp tells you how many Brownie Points you have.

A user profile picture next to a with Brownie Points score

There are three ways you can get Brownie Points:

  1. Complete challenges - you get one point per challenge you complete
  2. Post relevant links on Camper News - you get 1 point for posting a link, and another point for each upvote your link gets
  3. Help other campers in chat - each time you help another camper and they thank you (by typing "thanks @yourname"), you will get a point

Brownie Points help you look like the kind of person who codes a lot, shares relevant links, and helps people.

They also add to your Streak.

@bernart81 think about what your for loop is doing. It just blunt-forces its way through the whole list checking if the values are right. So, if the first entry doesn't match, it will return "no such contact" without checking the rest of the list
You want it to keep searching through the list until it finds a match, or gets to the end
So you need your 'return "no such contact" to be outside of that loop and only run when the loop has finished
remember that using 'return' ends the loop

Hey guys, I am having trouble with "Accessing Object Properties with Variables"
I assume my code is correct but I am failing tests with both of my solutions. Here is my code

var playerNumber = 16; var player = testObj["16"]

If I access playerNum with testObj[] I fail also

@CaBra503 have you tried to access playerNum by passing your variable playerNumber?

hey @CaBra503 , you are trying to use the value of a variable to access it. 16 is just a value, not a property

Assign the value 7 to variable a.

Assign the contents of a to variable b.

You know what I found frustrating about assigning? The equal sign just creates a new reference to the variable, and doesn't copy it, so that if you now change the "new" variable, you will also change the first !
