Feb 24 2016 00:00
how do you add a class for changing the size of an image?
Ashraful Islam
@iashraful
Feb 24 2016 00:02
@aishahh I add it in the tag usually, but I can also use jquery depending on what I am doing
Brian
@sludge256

@aishahh
Feb 24 2016 00:03
Yeah I've literally just started this, doing html
I'm just confused because I'm writing .smaller-image {width:100px;} within style
}
Robert Valmassoi
@valmassoi
Feb 24 2016 00:04
@iashraful whats that empty cache? which i tried and didnt work
@sludge256 i know thats whats confusing. where else can it be accessing the stored data if not cache?
Aishah
@aishahh
Feb 24 2016 00:04
but I think you have to relate img to smaller-image and i'm not sure how
Ashraful Islam
@iashraful
Feb 24 2016 00:05
@valmassoi FCC stores your lovely solution in encoded url
:D
it doesn't put anything in cache I believe

Max Rosen
@mrc1234
Feb 24 2016 00:32
Alright i was able to figure everything out except the class="form-control"
Give the text input in your form the class form-control.
willmasse
@willmasse
Feb 24 2016 00:35
Can anyone tell me why there is a white border above the picture of the cat..
Moisés Man
@moigithub
Feb 24 2016 00:36
@mrc1234 to this html element <input type="text" placeholder="cat photo URL" required>
add a class class="form-control"
willmasse
@willmasse
Feb 24 2016 00:37
Wouldn't a margin of 0 put it right on the top of the page?
Max Rosen
@mrc1234
Feb 24 2016 00:37
willmasse your background is set to white
section#slideOne {
background-image: url("http://juanitasanchez.org/images/IMG_0952.jpeg");
background-size: cover;
color: #ffffff;
your picture is not set to be in that space you need to put the border code in
willmasse
@willmasse
Feb 24 2016 00:38
so remove color: ffffff;
Max Rosen
@mrc1234
Feb 24 2016 00:38
thank you so much moigithub
no that you need it will probably go grey without it
willmasse
@willmasse
Feb 24 2016 00:40
Oh wait, yes, thats making the text white
so like, section #slideOne should be starting at the top of the page no?
instead it starts about 10px down

html, body {
height:100%;
margin: -10px;
padding:0;

}

changing that margin to -10 fixes the issue
but I'm totally lost as to why that exists the way it does
and changing to -10 makes the page to big horizontally, so thats not a real workaround
Brett Fincher
@tenkiller
Feb 24 2016 00:46
perhaps its because of background-size: cover?
I'd open dev tools and look at the computed CSS for that element
willmasse
@willmasse
Feb 24 2016 00:47
no, removing cover changes the size of the background image within #slideOne, but #slideOne is still starting 10px down the page
Moisés Man
@moigithub
Feb 24 2016 00:48
change view to full page .. probably is some codepen thing...
willmasse
@willmasse
Feb 24 2016 00:48
nope still there
Moisés Man
@moigithub
Feb 24 2016 00:49
or its ur image... ?? test with nother img
willmasse
@willmasse
Feb 24 2016 00:51
section#slideOne {
/background-image: url("http://juanitasanchez.org/images/IMG_0952.jpeg");/
background-color:blue;
background-size:cover;
color: #ffffff;
}
tested by changing background to simply background-color:blue;
Ashraful Islam
@iashraful
Feb 24 2016 00:51
@willmasse nice cat you got there :D
willmasse
@willmasse
Feb 24 2016 00:51

(my bosses cat lol)
Ashraful Islam
@iashraful
Feb 24 2016 00:51
:D
willmasse
@willmasse
Feb 24 2016 00:53
ok this is weird
giving #slideOne 1px of padding fixes the issue...
idk why..
Ashraful Islam
@iashraful
Feb 24 2016 00:55
may be your boss wants 1px space for her cat :D

willmasse
@willmasse
Feb 24 2016 01:02
oh yeah... wth?
Brett Fincher
@tenkiller
Feb 24 2016 01:02

the white border is still there
Brett Fincher
@tenkiller
Feb 24 2016 01:03
@willmasse weird
does padding: 0 also remove the white?
willmasse
@willmasse
Feb 24 2016 01:04
no, but any positive padding does
padding: 1px; fixes it
Moisés Man
@moigithub
Feb 24 2016 01:05
yea something is modifing the padding-top value.. but the weird thing is it not showing when inspect element...
Brett Fincher
@tenkiller
Feb 24 2016 01:05
the unwanted padding could be a default user-agent stylesheet inherit to the browser rendering...just a guess though
or its codepen doing it /shrug
willmasse
@willmasse
Feb 24 2016 01:06
do you see the white border?

Feb 24 2016 01:09
you should wrap your html code in a container-fluid div tag

happens when exported too, not a codepen thing

you would use an id# tag to mark that item so you can do something to it later, like style it with css. if you are going to use the id# to do something to the form itself as a whole, then that is where it goes. Let me know if this makes sense or not.

@swatibuhgotti the beauty of using a text editor is that you'll see when it isn't registering in the same color as your other classes

@dmaddox i can see that (before the chat formatted it and got rid of the first backslashes) your code was

var myStr = "\\ \\t \\t \\r \\n”

but the only time you need two backslashes is to escape one back slash. \\ comes out as\. for tabs, carraige returns, etc, you only need one backslash, like \t \r

@tiboclan close, your problem is here gear += change;
@tiboclan imagine it's a 10 speed bike and you're currently on gear 3. you want to go to gear 7, so you call setGear and tell it 7, but gear += change adds the 7 (new gear) to 3 (current gear) and you end up on gear 10
or you're on 8 and you want to go to 2. you call setGear, tell it 2, but you end up on 10

Has anybody done the "Seek & Destroy" algorithm challenge? I don't understand why my code won't work: function destroyer(arr) {
// Remove all the values

for (var i = 1; i<arr.length; i++) {
for (var j = 0; j<arr[0].length; j++) {
if (arr[0][j] == arr[i]) {
arr[0].splice(j,1);
j--;
}
}
}

return arr[0];

}

destroyer([1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3], 2, 3);
Why does arr[0] not return the full array in the first spot?

@Sglass03 you're going to need to read about the arguments object
@Sglass03 arr is just [1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3], the first argument. that's why arr[0] === 1. the other arguments (2 and 3) aren't passed into your function, which is what you will need to learn about the arguments object for

:point_right: algorithm no repeats please [wiki]

Problem Explanation:

  • This task requires us to look at each possible permutation of a string. This is best done using a recursion function. Being able to build a function which collects all permutations of a string is a common interview question, so there is no shortage of tutorials out there on how to do this, in many different code languages.
  • This task can still be daunting even after watching a tutorial. You will want to send each new use of the function 3 inputs: 1. a new string (or character array) that is being built, 2. a position in your new string that's going to be filled next, and 3. an idea of what characters (more specifically positions) from the original string have yet to be used. The pseudo code will look something like this:

    ```
    var str = ???;
    perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far){
    if(current string is finished) {
    print current string;
    }else{
    for(var i = 0; i < str.length; i++) {
    if(str[i] has not been used) {
      put str[i] into the current position;
      mark str[i] as used
      perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far)
      unmark str[i] as used because another branch in the tree for i + 1 will still likely use it;
    }
    }
    }
    }
Why do you keep putting it on the H2 element dude?
Examples of elements:
<h2>
It's telling you to put the ID on the form element, so something like:
$("#target1").addClass("btn-primary");
});
DJ
@qualitymanifest
Feb 24 2016 05:11
@pammie89 you're adding two classes to button and .btn
you want to add animated to button, shake to .btn, and btn-primary to #target1
the reason why #target1will already have animated and shake is because it is a button with the class .btn
Seth Bartlett
@sethbartlett
Feb 24 2016 05:13
@pammie89 You basically did everything right, but you did "animated bounce" and "animated shake" etc. You only need to add animated to the first one, shake to the 2nd and your 3rd is good
@pammie89 In the real world, what you are doing is right, but for their example, they only want you to add the class they tell you to each one :)
@arunabh15091989 I totally agree, and a big portion of the initial walk-through talked about googling and searching stack-overflow. You can almost always find answers there to questions like that. Things that are a little more specific (direct code questions) are typically a little harder to google.
@em1s Classes in CSS can be referred to by prepending a dot (.) to them. For example,
<style>
.pink-text {
  color: pink;
 }
 </style>
<h1 class="pink-text">Hello World!</h1>
@benegan1991 @em1s I think the quotes ("pink-text") have been made optional in HTML5, but you might still want to add them for compatibility with older browsers.
Oh I see, no need for help.
Timofey Votyakov
@tvotyakov
Feb 24 2016 10:15
@96street it is because of two things. First of all, you set top border on p tag using this css:
.line-story-left p, .line-story-right p {
    font-weight: 900;
    border-top: 1px solid #bfbfbf;
    padding: 4px;
    text-align: center;
}
but want to remove this border from a tag <p><a href="#" class="blue-story no-border-top"> it will not work. If you want to remove border from p tag, you need to set .no-border-top to this tag.
Timofey Votyakov
@tvotyakov
Feb 24 2016 10:22
@96street second. this selector .line-story-left p, .line-story-right p is more specific, that is why it has a priority before less common selector .no-border-top. You need increase your .no-border-top priority by making it more specific, for example, p.no-border-top, or using !important
96street
@96street
Feb 24 2016 10:30
using p.no-border-top worked, thanks @tvotyakov
Can anyone tell me why this is not working?
$(document).ready(function(){
var userCity, userCountry;
//var unitsTemp = "metric";
$.getJSON('//ipinfo.io', function(location) {
userCity = location.city;
userCountry = location.country;
  var apiCall =
 "api.openweathermap.org/data/2.5/weather?q=" + userCity + "," + userCountry + "&appid=7037604a45748f9881d9264e4afbf976";
  $.getJSON(apiCall, function(json) {
  $(".wholeJSON").html(JSON.stringify(json));
  var cityName = JSON.parse(JSON.stringify(json.name));
  var country = JSON.parse(JSON.stringify(json.sys.country));
  var temperature = JSON.parse(JSON.stringify(json.main.temp));
  var description = JSON.parse(JSON.stringify(json.weather[0].description));
  var iconCode = JSON.parse(JSON.stringify(json.weather[0].icon));
  var iconAddress = "http://www.openweathermap.org/img/w/" + iconCode + ".png"
  $(".cityCountry").html(cityName + ", " + country);
  $(".temperature").html(temperature);
  $(".description").html(description);
  $(".icon").attr("src", iconAddress);
  });
});
});
I think it has to do with nesting AJAX calls. If I don't nest them, the second ajax call works wonderfully. But obviously I need to retrieve the correct URL first ...
Any help would be much appreciated.
You understand the difference between a string literal and a string?
Nicholas
@nick88p
Feb 24 2016 10:51
not sure I do
How would you solve the problem?
Blauelf
@Blauelf
Feb 24 2016 10:53
While I might write a string as "foo", the quotation marks are not part of the string. If I write "foo\tbar", \t is not part of the string. It is part of the literal. JSON transports strings as literals, but the getJSON will already parse them.
Nicholas
@nick88p
Feb 24 2016 10:55
That's what I initially thought. But when I did the getJSON the result was not parsed, hence I added the JSON.parse
Weird.
But I understand the difference between a string and literal now.
      case NaN:
         return false;
      default:
         return true;
}
bouncer([false, null, 0, NaN, undefined, ""]);
The bouncer call is returning [null] instead of []
@Zooloo2014 in js these things are automatically counted as false null, false, 0, undefined, NaN, ''
so no need to make special filters, just pass them through your if :D
Blauelf
@Blauelf
Feb 24 2016 11:34
@Zooloo2014 The 262 are your "brownie points". And NaN does not equal itself, so you cannot test for NaN by comparison (that's actually useful, if v!==v, then v is NaN). It is incorrectly shown as "null" in the FCC console.
You need 2 p elements with Kitty Ipsum text.
Make sure each of your p elements has a closing tag.
Your p element should contain the first few words of the provided additional kitty ipsum text.
Do not add a class attribute to your new p element.
Give elements with the p tag a font-size of 16px. Browser and Text zoom should be at 100%.
how would I go about calling images inside codepen.io? I have the images stored on my dropbox because I can't upload them to codepen, but when I reference them in my css, it doesn't show
Aleksander Gębicki
@Takumar
Feb 24 2016 13:39
@gabrielk86 you apply class to any element using class attribute:
For example:
<p class="red-text">This text will be using .red-text class</p>
@Takumar @banacbr Using images directly from URLs on other websites is bad practice, unless the website owner explicitly grants you permission to do so. If the images' license allows redistribution, upload them on Github and use the raw URL.
@Takumar Yes, although enforcing copyright is difficult, it is beneficial for the community as a whole if you respect the licenses. It also shows respect to the original creator of the resource :) I always add a link to whatever free library or resource I am using, usually in the footer.
@agirlnamedJared you don't have to create definition of .container-fluid class, just use it in your challenge.
Find the <div> in your code, and apply class like you did it in the code you showed us: div class= "containter-fluid" (just add angle brackets to this
Feb 24 2016 14:45
:point_right: checkpoint record collection [wiki]
Checkpoint: Record Collection
Instructions
You are given a JSON object representing (a small part of) your record collection. Each album is identified by a unique id number and has several properties. Not all albums have complete information.
Write a function which takes an id, a property (prop), and a value.
For the given id in collection:
If value is non-blank (value !== ""), then update or set the value for the prop.
If the prop is "tracks" and value is non-blank, push the value onto the end of the tracks array.
If value is blank, delete that prop.
Always return the entire collection object.
Remember to use Read-Search-Ask if you get stuck. Try to pair program. Write your own code.
So i have a question with regard to these javascript exercises that kind of trip me up.
In the code below and many others a variable called result is always declared at the top as undefined or an empty string. Why do this?
Why not just delcare the variable when you are ready to use it?
function wordBlanks(myNoun, myAdjective, myVerb, myAdverb) {
  var result = "";
  // Your code below this line
  // Your code above this line
  return result;
}
// Change the words here to test your function
wordBlanks("dog", "big", "ran", "quickly");
Feb 24 2016 15:03
@bhargav4 Hey i found this on stackoverflow - In dot notation you access keys by name, in bracket notation by string.
The later can be dynamic
not sure if that helps
Markus Kiili
@Masd925
Feb 24 2016 15:04
@bhargav4 The dot notation only works if the property key string is a valid JS identifier and you write the key after the dot. Bracket notation works with keys that can be arbitrary strings, variables, or expressions.
@jgordon615 @disjfa Thats what i do, host it on my own webserver
Paul Brown
@paulbwd
Feb 24 2016 15:06
@bhargav4 you can use either , but you use bracket notation for when there is a space in the property name, or special character which you wouldn't then be able to use with . notation ie . "some color" could be used with brackets but not .notation
Joseph Gordon
@jgordon615
Can anyone tell me how to fix my problem (see below)? I have tried nesting the ajax calls, doing seperate ajax calls unnested, defining both in terms of functions and calling on one another and loads of other things. I am pretty sure that the reason it is not rendering anything in my html is because of the asynchronous nature of ajax, but I'm not sure. I have tested each ajax call separately and they both work individually. I just can't get them to work together, i.e. I can't retrieve the location from one call and then use that information for the next ajax call. http://codepen.io/nick88p/pen/OMKjqG
@chrisdav6 No, JS has function scope and declaring variables at the start of the function makes it clear...that the variable is available for use locally :smile:
clear is not a term
Markus Kiili
@Masd925
Feb 24 2016 15:15
@chrisdav6 I just mean that JS engine first gets all the variable declarations and reserves memory for them and assigns undefined to the variables, so it doesn't matter where in the function the declarations are. Putting declarations at the start of the function is therefore quite logical (not at all mandatory).
Chris Davis
@chrisdav6
Feb 24 2016 15:18
ok, so that is similar to what paulbwd was saying. If you declare them at the start you can make use of their undefined status if need be
