help Use a CSS Class to Style an Element
CamperBot

Mar 06 2016 00:35

:point_right: challenge use a css class to style an element [wiki]

Classes are reusable styles that can be added to HTML elements. You can apply a class to an HTML element like this: <h2 class="blue-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>.

Note that in your CSS style element, classes should start with a period. In your HTML elements' class declarations, classes shouldn't start with a period.

sign in Style and how to write it in the Form element to give id attribute the color green?

Kristina Van Doren-Shulkin
@kristinavandoren
Mar 06 2016 01:21
So if you have an id
You need a hashtag before the id
So #cat-photo-form
And then your curly brackets with the property inside
@mkhadnot That doesn't look like the part of the code you need to be working on
You need to work within the style bracket
I mean, style tags
You know what I mean

The tutorial really didn't explain what a Pen is, what one can be set to do, and why we would need multiple Pens.
Things have finally quieted down enough that I can listen to the A-V presentation about the tribute page.

@Pastshelfdate a 'pen' is basically a project. a web page with html, css and javascript
so every pen is another project, they can be just a portion of a page. like trying out different buttons styles, or whole pages

Make Dead Links using the Hash Symbol
Sometimes you want to add a elements to your website before you know where they will link.

This is also handy when you're changing the behavior of a link using jQuery, which we'll learn about later.

Replace the value of your a element's href attribute with a #, also known as a hash symbol, to turn it into a dead link.

afternoon everyone
So maybe someone can help me... I think I'm missing something. I'm on the twitch tv zipline and it seems that you can only get the logo if the streamer is actively online. however looking at the sample some of the offline streamers have images. :point_right: code formatting [wiki]

Multi line Code

```js ⇦ Type 3 backticks and then press [shift + enter ⏎] (type js or html or css)
<paste your code here>,
then press [shift + enter ⏎]
``` ⇦ Type 3 backticks, then press [enter ⏎]

Single line Code

@TheBGar http://codepen.io/mrpassiontea/pen/aNvrWo Here it is! And it's a project right after creating a tribute page :3
I recommend clicking on the link because the codepen from the chat will ruin the alignment
But the problem is when I resize the browser, there is a horizontal scroll bar because of the fishing img...
everything else responds nice
B. Garber
@TheBGar
Mar 06 2016 04:51
@mrpassiontea so just the image is what you are having issues with?
Tabi
@mrpassiontea
Mar 06 2016 04:51
@TheBGar Yessir, I think it's because I specified a width and height in the <style> of the img
B. Garber
@TheBGar
Mar 06 2016 04:52
@mrpassiontea that could definitely be it then....anytime you hard fix a width and/or height, I don't think it will be responsive.....UNLESS, you specify the height and width in terms of percentages
Tabi
@mrpassiontea
Mar 06 2016 04:55
@TheBGar That does solve the problem! However, how would I make it so that the image doesn't look ugly when it's minimized? ._. should I just deactivate it in general??
if it's minimized
B. Garber
@TheBGar
Mar 06 2016 04:56
@mrpassiontea what do you mean minimized? like in a phone viewport?
Tabi
@mrpassiontea
Mar 06 2016 04:57
@TheBGar I shouldn't say minimized I should've said, resized. Whenever I resize the browser to very small, the image looks very ugly...
Is there anything I can do about that?
B. Garber
@TheBGar
Mar 06 2016 04:59
@mrpassiontea how did you to the sizing? I would do your best to retain the same proportions as the original image (i.e., 1000px x 500px should be 50% and 25%, etc...)
*how did you do the sizing
Tabi
@mrpassiontea
Mar 06 2016 05:00
width:40%;height:35%
I'm not sure what the real sizing is
I'll check realquick
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Mar 06 2016 05:01
@mrpassiontea I would put width to auto, and only define the height.
B. Garber
@TheBGar
Mar 06 2016 05:01
@dnorthrupva that's an idea too!
@mrpassiontea if you do what @dnorthrupva says, then make sure you are still using a percentage...otherwise the responsiveness is lost
Tabi
@mrpassiontea
Mar 06 2016 05:02
I'll try to do it :) The size of the photo is 960 x 543
width = 960
B. Garber

@ch33s3cr4ck3r up to you....bootstrap would be quicker...but if not, try adjusting margin on the blue element
Donavin Northrup
@dnorthrupva
Mar 06 2016 05:06
@ch33s3cr4ck3r I'd have to see the code, but I would probably put both of them into a wrapper, center the wrapper, 100% width, auto'd margin.
Then inside of that, each div for the blue/yellow would get an auto margin with a 50% width.
Just off top of my head, I feel like this will look slightly off, but should be close.
B. Garber

http://codepen.io/dikiaap/pen/GZpbgd
Shankar Dhanaraj
@shankarkd
Mar 06 2016 07:26
@dikiaap you have to wrap the div element with col inside a div element with a row and preferably those two themselves will be wrapped within a div element with class container..
Please refer to this article for further explanation of how the bootstrap grid system works… its a much better explanation that i could give here http://www.helloerik.com/the-subtle-magic-behind-why-the-bootstrap-3-grid-works

Hello all, my code for the “Missing Letters” exercise works, as in it identifies the missing letters “d” and “i” as seen in the black console. It seems to return undefined for the other two cases, but for some reason for the first two cases of identifying “d” and “i” as the missing letters there is no green check marks. The “undefined” use cases has the check marks. So it doesn’t pass the test, did someone else have an issue like this?
Never mind i got it…

Michael Aubrey
@mca62511
Mar 06 2016 08:56

@umar-khan Process of elimination.

I knew it was a style issue so first I checked your css. There wasn't much there so I figured most of your stylng must come from a library like bootstrap. I checked any external CSS in codepen.io's CSS settings. Saw you had bootstrap. Tried removing it. It didn't help, so I fugred maybe you had some CSS written in style tags in your html. I was wrong about that, but I noticed you had a bunch of link tags to stylesheets in your html. I tried removing them one by one until the gradient disappeared.

The same for text field it should be: <input type="text" class="form-control"...
class is a different attribute than type so you should preseve type and add class attribute to it.

:point_right: brownie points [wiki]

The number beside your picture on Free Code Camp tells you how many Brownie Points you have.

A user profile picture next to a with Brownie Points score

There are three ways you can get Brownie Points:

  1. Complete challenges - you get one point per challenge you complete
  2. Post relevant links on Camper News - you get 1 point for posting a link, and another point for each upvote your link gets
  3. Help other campers in chat - each time you help another camper and they thank you (by typing "thanks @yourname"), you will get a point

Brownie Points help you look like the kind of person who codes a lot, shares relevant links, and helps people.

They also add to your Streak.

Hey people!! How can we make our background images responsive??
Marcos Antônio de Souza Silva
@massilva
Mar 06 2016 13:45
@yasserhussain1110 you can set width image in percentage (%) format. Example 'width: 50%;'
@yasserhussain1110 If you are using bootstrap you can add the class "img-resp onsive" to the image

Hey all, having trouble understanding the text of the Comparisons with the Logical Or Operator waypoint

It says:
The pattern below should look familiar from prior waypoints:

if (num > 10) {
return "No";
}
if (num < 5) {
return "No";
}
return "Yes";
will return "Yes" only if num is between 5 and 10 (5 and 10 included). The same logic can be written as:

if (num > 10 || num < 5) {
return "No";
}
return "Yes";

but doesn't the OR operator return true if either operand is true?

@massilva If you have build your portfolio page can i take a look? just to get some ideas??
Nopply
@StandB
Mar 06 2016 13:57
the OR operator returns true if one condition is true, so if num > 10 is false and num < 5 is true it would return true @MMPatrick
Mike Patrick
@MMPatrick
Mar 06 2016 13:58
Right, that's what I'm understanding and what it says at the top of the waypoint, but right below it seems to muddy it up with an example that isn't accurate @StandB
Nopply
@StandB
Mar 06 2016 13:58
can u link me? @MMPatrick
the text between the two code snippets is what's tripping me up as it seems to describe an AND operator
Nopply
@StandB
Mar 06 2016 14:00
well, the example is correct but it's indeed kind of confusing
i'd do that iwht an AND operator indeed
```
Mike Patrick
@MMPatrick
Mar 06 2016 14:01
alright just wanted to make sure I wasn't going crazy :P
Nopply
@StandB
Mar 06 2016 14:01
if (num < 10 && num > 5) {
  return "Yes";
}
return "No";
thats how i would do it
Konstantin Yamaliev
@kyamaliev
Mar 06 2016 14:03
@StandB @MMPatrick - in most (if not all) languages there is a short-circuit boolean evaluation which means that when you OR two booleans, if the first is true, it doesn't look at the second and when you AND them if the first is false the expression is automatically false so the second boolean is not evaluated at all.
Mike Patrick
@MMPatrick
Mar 06 2016 14:05
@kyamaliev That's where my confusion was, because in the snippet they show as soon as num > 10 evaluates to true, you've satisfied the OR operator so the text prefacing the snippet: 'will return "Yes" only if num is between 5 and 10 (5 and 10 included). The same logic can be written as' seems to be inaccurate
not trying to be nitpicky just making sure my understanding of it is correct lol
Konstantin Yamaliev
@kyamaliev
Mar 06 2016 14:09
@MMPatrick it's not that - it will return yes only if both conditions are false (you won't step into the IFs) - basically the first snippet says return Yes if all IF statements evaluate to false. If one of them is true the function will return a value. If none of them are true. The second snippet is better, as it actually shows more what the function does, but @StandB 's way to do it is best, because it follows everyday logic - if that and that ("yes"), else "no".
Mike Patrick
@MMPatrick
Mar 06 2016 14:11
ahh ok I think I see.
Thanks guys!
Back to it
Konstantin Yamaliev
@kyamaliev
Mar 06 2016 14:11
I think you may have troubles with the logic of return statements in a function - only one will ever be executed, but which one depends on the logic of the program
hello everyone, here is question that i've meet just now.
in the jQuery part...
the wrong is "Only add one class with each of your three selectors.
and the script part
<script>
$(document).ready(function() {
$("button").addClass("animated");
$(".btn").addClass("shake");
$("#target1").addClass("animated shake btn-primary");
});
</script>
so what's with that?
@yasserhussain1110 you should include boostrap javascript
and jQuery ^)
:point_right: challenge change text inside an element using jquery [wiki]
Change Text Inside an Element Using jQuery
Using jQuery, you can change the text between the start and end tags of an element. You can even change HTML markup.
jQuery has a function called .html() that lets you add HTML tags and text within an element. Any content previously within the element will be completely replaced with the content you provide using this function.
Here's how you would rewrite and italicize the text of our heading:
$("h3").html("<i>jQuery Funhouse</i>");
jQuery also has a similar function called .text() that only alters text without adding tags. So when using .html() please remember that you will be editing the whole markup and not just the text.
It asks you to nest all your radio buttons in <div class="row" which already exists in the code...then each button should have it's own <div col-xs-6 and that's just simply changing the number 4 to 6...not sure what I'm doing wrong here
@osheenn maybe Google Drive is the way to go...http://stackoverflow.com/questions/15557392/how-do-i-display-images-from-google-drive-on-a-website
If you have some image files, just upload them to a public folder on your Google Drive, copy its folder ID from the address bar (e.g. 0B0Gi4v5omoZUVXhCT2kta1l0ZG8) and paste it into a form at GDrives, then choose your own alias (e.g. myimgs) and voila! You can access the images one by one using e.g. http://gdriv.es/myimgs/myimage.jpg.
If you want to embed a whole folder on your website (in a frame), you can use one of the following URLs, replacing [folderID] with your own ID:
http://gdriv.es/myimgs/
https://docs.google.com/folder/d/[folderID]/preview?rm=minimal
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=[folderID]
If you prefer to get the file list in XML or JSON, you can use YQL.
Note: You can use Google+ Photos to host ans embed your images as well.
@giladil -- you format/post your code this way ...
  1. start with a single line, with nothing else on it except this: ```js
  2. paste your code
  3. if the editor hasn't automatically added another set of backticks (character to the left of "1" on most keyboards) -- enter, on a line by themselves, 3 backticks, like this: ```
now you will probably be in a different mode in the editor -- to get back to chat mode and have your code show up, go to the upper right of your chat box & you'll see a keyboard -- just click on it, and it will return you to posting mode ...
...then just hit return ...
Hi guys im doing http://www.freecodecamp.com/challenges/arguments-optional right now and i noticed that the last test should return undefined. But doesnt the problem state that if only one argument is passed to the function it should return a function and not undefined. And add(2)([3]) only passes one argument, doesnt it? So the last test should ask for a function to be returned
Quincy just doesn't understand. Before the Code Pen section, something very hard for anyone who doesn't already know HTML or JavaScript ... is wisely broken down into small, much more manageable steps. And we have an interface that allows us to show our actual code to more experienced people. Code Pen is suddenly the deep end of the pool.
I followed the suggestion and found code,
@RaffaelHold array is not a number :)
RaffaelHold
@RaffaelHold
@gawk88 but the array is not in the arguments array, because only 2 is an argument of the call to add(), no?
I'm working through the Inventory Update algorithm and I'm hitting a "TypeError: Cannot read property '0' of undefined when using a for loop to access elements of an array. I've changed the loop to only run once and accessed the identical elements outside of the loop just fine, so I'm not understanding why, within a loop, elements are somehow blocked. Or I'm misunderstanding something. My code is here: http://bit.ly/1QXMnIF Note: If you comment out the line in the "if" statement, the code runs and outputs both elements that the error claim are unreachable.
Mantas
@mmaskoliunas
Mar 06 2016 20:03
@RaffaelHold you can split that add(2)([3]) to var add1 = add(2); add1(3); . if that makes sense :smile:
Pastshelfdate
@Pastshelfdate
Mar 06 2016 20:03
[Starting again, in Compose Mode] I I followed the suggestion,and found code,
<style style="text/css">
body {
background-image: url("/pix/samples/bg1.gif");
background-position: 50% 50%;
background-repeat: repeat;
}
</style>
in Quackit, an online code library, and plugged in one of my own images, by its web URL:
<html>
<head>
<style style="text/css">
body {
background-image: url("http://www.pizzafromscratch.net/2007Spring85.html");
background-position: 50% 50%;
background-repeat: no repeat;
}
</style>
</head>
<body> </body>
</html>
And nothing works. This is way, way too many things to learn at once, without help. "Read, research, ask"? I don't know what to read, I don't know where to begin researching, and when I've asked, no one has responded, probably because they also find it overwhelming to try to help the clueless.
Anyone there?
Mantas
@RaffaelHold so at first you're creating function and then passing argument [3] to that function
RaffaelHold
@RaffaelHold
@luckycharm223 Sorry, ADD moment, there. We need to be able to see your code. -
But don't just copy and paste! That's horrible to read, and runs off the screen. You'll need to click the little button to the right of the message area, the upper button that looks like 2 word balloons overlapping. It will change to a tiny keyboard.
Then you need to copy the part of your code you want us to see.
Next, you need to type 3 back ticks (That should be the button to the left of your !/1 key.). A second set of 3 back ticks should appear below.
Paste your code between those. Then click the tiny keyboard button, and hit Return.
If that doesn't work, let us know. We've all struggled with properly displaying code.
@leilamelgratti is "button" the id or the class of the element?
if it's the class you need to add the "." $(".button")
and for an id it's #
@NicolNonga
You can use regex to remove them all:
var input = "\\test\red\bob\fred\new";
var output = input.replace(/\W/g, '');
"testredbobfrednew"
@NicolNonga What character set is being used? It may be that all the alphanumeric characters are within one or two ranges of alphanumeric codes. Then maybe you could write code that searches for matching/not matching those ranges.
@AbieKachler you should add only one class at a time. In third line you have added three classes: "animated shake btn-primary"
I guess you should add only btn-primary class in that line.
@luckycharm223 in this part:
$("#target4").html("<i>jQuary Playground</i>");
$("#target4").text("<i>target4</i>");
first line is close, but as you have noticed there is other text then "jQuary Playground" on the button. Correct this text to what you see on the button and remove second line.
@luckycharm223 you are not allowed to change text on the button, you have to italicize it.
