could someone point me in the right direction? I'm new to FCC but not new to web technologies as a result I want to focus on the projects (such as the pintrest clone) but when I go to that track there isn't a tutorial to follow,am I supposed to just know what to do?

@drellen well, the challenges/tutorials that lie before act as a buildup to the pinterest clone project. So when you reach that project you should know how to do it.. or at least how to get started.

@alexanderkopke
Mar 07 2016 00:27
@drellen I haven't reached that far yet, I'm at the end of front-end, but that has been the structure so far. The challenges with * are projects that needs to be completed to get the certificate. So if you can do them you can skip the prior challenges, if you can't do the project go skim the previous challenges and see what you're missing.

@TheBGar I believe I did. Here is the entire code:

    $("#target4").remove();
    $("#target2").appendTo("#right-well");

    $("#right-well").children().css("color", "orange");
    $(".well:nth-child(2)").addClass("animated bounce");
  });
</script>

<!-- Only change code above this line. -->

<div class="container-fluid">

@mattr47 it needed another element to target...you targeted the class but then there were no nested wells....so you needed to target an element within the .well class

    arrayOfLargestNumbers.push(tempNumberStorage);

largestOfFour([[4, 5, 1, 3], [13, 27, 18, 26], [32, 35, 37, 39], [1000, 1001, 857, 1]]);

@TheBGar right, but I’ve also got a col-xs-6 class. I’m just trying to figure out how it knew I was talking about the well class and not one of my other classes. I’m sure the answer is staring me in the face, but I must be blind right now (or looking at too much code today)
B. Garber
@TheBGar
Mar 07 2016 01:47
@mattr47 you're asking how jQuery knew how to target your .well class for that nth-child question you had?

@TheBGar yes, versus another class
bigbeno37

Matt Rogie
@mattr47
Mar 07 2016 01:49
@TheBGar Lol, oh that I understood. Sorry, I was not clear. I tried another solution someone offered and it worked as well. This is what I’m talking about in relation to my question $(".target:nth-child(2)").addClass("animated bounce");
B. Garber
@TheBGar
Mar 07 2016 01:51

@Wahoowa2014 because currently, the background image is only assigned to that particular div...rather than your whole page

@lowerbackache depending on how much italics and what you're trying to use...<em> simply adds italics to text in html just use an opening and closing text around the text you want styled that way

Quick question, why use <style> body{background-color: black;}</style> ..... Why is 'body' not '.body'? Is it because body is a pre-defined class?
greg
@wearenotgroot
Mar 07 2016 03:45
@fluxrate yes
@fluxrate body is an element btw
Ben Barnett
@fluxrate
Mar 07 2016 03:46
Hmm. I haven't learned about elements yet.
greg
@wearenotgroot
Mar 07 2016 03:46
@fluxrate what you can do is use body as a selector on the <style> / css section
@fluxrate well you can called it html element or tag
Jeff
@OnlineJobsPlus
Mar 07 2016 03:47
@fluxrate it's not a class. http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_body.asp
@TheBGar i'm not sure. must be a seasonal promotion!
greg
@wearenotgroot
Mar 07 2016 03:49
@fluxrate yep here is the list of all html tags ---->http://www.w3schools.com/tags/
Ben Barnett
@fluxrate
Mar 07 2016 03:50
Hmm, ok. So it is an element. So within the <style> </stlye> tag, when I change the... attributes of the element (for example the background to black) I don't need to put a period in front of body
and body is not a class, so this leaves me to conclude that the <style></style> tag can contain and edit more than just classes I create?
greg
@wearenotgroot
Mar 07 2016 03:52
@fluxrate yep
@fluxrate .(dot) is a selector for classes
@fluxrate while # is a selector for ids
@fluxrate and for elements or tags just write their names
Jeff
@OnlineJobsPlus

Mar 07 2016 03:54
Thanks! So is CSS a part of HTML or something different
greg
@wearenotgroot
Mar 07 2016 03:55
@fluxrate well css just edits properties of html elements
@fluxrate it's basically rules to follow on how these elements will look like, where it will place in relation to each other and so on
Jeff
@OnlineJobsPlus
Mar 07 2016 03:56
@fluxrate you can view it like this: HTML = structure; skeleton or noun of the webpage
CSS = style; skin or adjective of the webpage
JS = the actions or verbs of a webpage; adds logic and interactivity to a page
Ben Barnett
@fluxrate
Mar 07 2016 03:59
So HTML, I can make a header for example <h1</h1> and make it green. then make another header, and make it green, and so on... Or, I can make life really simple by using CSS to just say, "make all headers green"
So CSS is not essential to HTML, it is just useful for simplifying your life
Is that right?

@fluxrate its sort of a best practice approach to programming. its also best to have separate html, css and js for the page. css should compliment the html. the page should still work if I disable the css and possibly the js. it might look bad, but it should still function.

In the algorith: http://www.freecodecamp.com/challenges/sum-all-odd-fibonacci-numbers, I have written the code as follows:

 function sumFibs(num) {

  var num1=0, num2=1, next, i;
  for(i=0; i<num; i++) {
    next = num1 + num2;
    num1 = num2;
    num2 = next;
  }

  return num;
}

sumFibs(4000000);

Above code works fine for certain tests, but for other tests it runs upto inifnity. Someone please guide on what logical error I am making here.

David Young
@dayvidwhy
Mar 07 2016 05:51
what does it work fine for, that number?
Mufaddal B
@invinciblemuffi
Mar 07 2016 05:52
lets say 4
David Young
@dayvidwhy
Mar 07 2016 05:52
i++ looks od?
are you trying to do it up to that number
Mufaddal B
@invinciblemuffi
Mar 07 2016 05:52
yes upto 4
David Young
@dayvidwhy
Mar 07 2016 05:52
oh you want that many fib
you probably should check if they’re odd
yeah it wants all the fib numbers under that number
Mufaddal B
@invinciblemuffi
Mar 07 2016 05:54
I am a bit confused on that, let me paste the description here:
Return the sum of all odd Fibonacci numbers up to and including the passed number if it is a Fibonacci number.
David Young
@dayvidwhy
Mar 07 2016 05:54
if you do like sumFibs(6) your going to add up 6 fib numbers
thats why its going for ages
if you do it for a huge number
have you considered using a while loop instead, while your under the max number
Mufaddal B
@invinciblemuffi
Mar 07 2016 05:55
you can copy my code and paste it in ur console and try it for yourself for 5, 10 or some other number and see whats the output, maybe then can u guide me where I am going wrong
David Young
@dayvidwhy
Mar 07 2016 05:55
yeah im trying to make a solution
Mufaddal B
@invinciblemuffi
Mar 07 2016 05:55
Yes tried while too, gives the same effect
right now filtering out odd numbers is not an issue, generating the series is.
David Young
@dayvidwhy
Mar 07 2016 05:57
yeah i get it
haha
got it
you need to be counting up the fib numbers below the number you pass to the method. so your method for counting the series is correct
Mufaddal B
@invinciblemuffi
Mar 07 2016 06:01
ok
next
David Young
@dayvidwhy
Mar 07 2016 06:01
you might want to keep track of that sum and return it
also do this while num2 <= num
i dont like the for loop
so youll be counting in fib numbers
eventually num2 will be close or over that max number
so you stop there
please ask a more accurate question i really hope i can help
Mufaddal B
@invinciblemuffi
Mar 07 2016 06:03
Ok let me try out your solution and will get back to you
Yes I will try to be more precise on my future questions.
Mufaddal B
@invinciblemuffi
Mar 07 2016 06:24

@deedubwhy : Code is working fine, the output which is required after adding odd numbers is coming out to be more, figured out that I have to subtract the original number with some other number, but which one.

function sumFibs(num) {

  var num1=0, num2=1, next, odd, arr=[0,1];
  while(num2<num) {
    next = num1 + num2;
    num1 = num2;
    num2 = next;
    //console.log(next);
    if(next % 2 > 0) {
      arr.push(next);
    }
    console.log(arr);
  }

  num = arr.reduce(function(preVal, nextVal) {
    return preVal+nextVal;
  });

  console.log(num);

  return num;
}

sumFibs(4);

Above code should return num = 5, but is returning 10 and same goes for other higher numbers.

David Young
@dayvidwhy
Mar 07 2016 06:28
so your pushing odds to the array, not sure what reduce does
does logging the array seem to present the right numbers?

Mar 07 2016 07:18

Umar Khan
@umar-khan
Mar 07 2016 07:18
It happens when i updated with this line $("span").html(json[0]["content"]);
Mufaddal B
@invinciblemuffi
Mar 07 2016 07:20
You have a block level element(H1), inside that u have two inline level children(span, i), inside i you again have a block level child, so first of all I advice you not to nest any block level elements inside inline elements
I hope you understood so far, so I can move ahead
Umar Khan
@umar-khan
Mar 07 2016 07:21
whats the block level child that i have inside <i>?
Mufaddal B
@invinciblemuffi
Mar 07 2016 07:21
P tag
P(paragraph) tags are block level elements
Umar Khan
@umar-khan
Mar 07 2016 07:21
Wait where are you seeing a <p> tag?
It should look like this
Mufaddal B
@invinciblemuffi
Mar 07 2016 07:22
open your console
Umar Khan
@umar-khan
Mar 07 2016 07:22
          <blockquote>
            <h1 class="text-center dark-text"><i class="fa fa-quote-left"></i><span id="quote"></span></h1>
            <footer class="text-right dark-text">Anonymous</footer>
          </blockquote>
okay one sec
ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
Okay that makes sense!
The JSON has <p> in it
Mufaddal B
@invinciblemuffi
Mar 07 2016 07:23
yes it does look the same like what you have coded, but a p tag is added further inside, so let's see if that's coming from your JS code
cool, u go it

Mufaddal B
@invinciblemuffi
Mar 07 2016 07:26
Your code will look cleaner and maintainable, also you wont face issues regarding the sync/async behavior of browsers downloading your cdn link data
Yes in external cases, use script tags and link tags
Also I see you have inline script tag written, I suggest you paste it in JS window.
Umar Khan
@umar-khan
Mar 07 2016 07:28
In my current setup I just have my .html file and a .css file that i link to in my <head>

The way browser downloads the files depends upon from where the file has to be downloaded, ex: if files are to be downloaded from cdn and local both, then browser starts downloading both files together in separate threads, so lets say if ur bootstrap.js is to be downloaded from local and jquery from cdn, and bootstrap depends on jquery, the both files will be downloaded simultaneously, in case if bootstrap finishes downloading first and then jquery gets downloaded, ur code will throw errors.

@CodingMagesty : To center an image you have to put it in a block level element, lets take div.
Then u give a class of medium-**columns or whatever the name of the class is in bootstrap, next u give text-center class to the div
Behind the scenes how css can be used to align inline elements inside block level elements without using any css framework, let me know, will explain you.

@bhargav4 : $.getJSON replace it with S.ajax like this:
$.ajax({

    contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
    async: false,
    dataType: "json",

Having trouble with the palindrome challenge. Can't get the very last test to work :(
function palindrome(str) {
  var arr = [];
  var newStr = str.toLowerCase().replace(/[,.\s]+/gi, '');

var reverseStr = Array.prototype.map.call(newStr, function(x) {
  return x;
}).reverse().join('');

console.log(newStr);
console.log(reverseStr);

if(newStr == reverseStr) {
  return true;
} else {
  return false;
}
}

palindrome("0_0 (: /-\ :) 0-0");
for some reason it reverses the brackets..if you copy and paste in console you'll see what I mean

The if should be executed in this code but it is not. Can anyone tell me why?

while(change>=coinValues[i][1]&&cid[i][1]>0){
              a += coinValues[i][1];
              console.log("Value of a = "+a);
              returnChange.push(coinValues[i][0], a);
              change -= coinValues[i][1];
              cid[i][1] -= coinValues[i][1];
              if(returnChange[i]===returnChange[i+2]){
                  console.log("It is a match");
              }
}

The output is [ 'TWENTY', 20, 'TEN', 10, 'QUARTER', 0.25, 'QUARTER', 0.5 ]. So the "QUARTER" should match and the if loop should execute.

by default browsers aren't allowed to fetch data from other sites as it is considered insecure but jsonp is solution to this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JSONP

I have a form which has two drop-down menu say A and B. Contents of drop-down B is dependent on the selection of drop-down A.

The form uses AJAX to load the contents of drop down B.

I am using selenium and python to automatically select the drop down. I am able to select the drop down A but due to the use of AJAX my code is not working for selecting the content of drop-down B.

I have searched the selenium documentation (Explicit wait) and some stackoverflow answers but still I am unable to implement it in python. I am a newbie in python and selenium so please bear me.

Here is a small portion of my code :

#District selection DROP-DOWN A
district=Select(driver.find_element_by_id("ddlDistrict85"))
district.select_by_value("1")

#SRO selection DROP-DOWN B
# I Need EXPLICIT WAIT logic here to wait till the entire drop-down B is loaded
sro=Select(driver.find_element_by_id("ddlSRO85"))
sro.select_by_value("1")

Suggest some logic to wait till entire drop-down B is loaded.

Can anyone help me figure out why my palindrome function isn't returning the string the right way?
function palindrome(str) {
  var arr = [];
  var newStr = str.toLowerCase().replace(/[,.\s]+/gi, '');

var reverseStr = Array.prototype.map.call(newStr, function(x) {
  return x;
}).reverse().join('');

console.log(newStr);
console.log(reverseStr);

if(newStr == reverseStr) {
  return true;
} else {
  return false;
}
}

palindrome("0_0 (: /-\ :) 0-0");
my regex code isn't removing the spaces after removing , and .
Ammar Najjar
@ammarnajjar
Mar 07 2016 13:57
@ndejesus1227 , if you want to remove the . you have to escape it with \, or else regex will interpret it as any kind of character:
var newStr = str.toLowerCase().replace(/[,\.\s]+/gi, '');

Leave your h2 element uncommented so that it is visible on your page.
Comment out your p element so that it is not visible on your page.
Be sure to close each of your comments with -->.

@umi40 , for html comment there is an opening tag <!-- and a closing tag --> (not --!>) and you use them to comment inside html:

 <!--<h1>Hello World</h1>-->

<h2>CatPhotoApp</h2>
<!--<p>Hello Paragraph</p>-->

every commented part will be invisible on your webpage.
to un-comment just remove those tags and you're good to go:

 <!--<h1>Hello World</h1>-->

<h2>CatPhotoApp</h2>
<p>Hello Paragraph</p>

hi can i get some help?
how do i "Add the btn-primary class to the button with id #target1."

the full exercise is: Now you know three ways of targeting elements: by type: $("button"), by class: $(".btn"), and by id $("#target1").

Although it is possible to add multiple classes in a single .addClass() call, let's add them to the same element in three different ways.

Using each of the above jQuery selectors and the addClass() function:

Add the animated class to all elements with type button.

Add the shake class to all the buttons with class .btn.

Add the btn-primary class to the button with id #target1."

@jkb10 , there is an < in the beginning, remove it, and insert text for the label tag:

 <label><input type="checkbox" name="personality"> Text Here</label>
 <label><input type="checkbox" name="personality"> Text Here</label>
 <label><input type="checkbox" name="personality"> Text Here</label>

and you have one word name miss-spelled as nama

any suggestion?

Mar 07 2016 15:56
@ammarnajjar the challenge is : Use Responsive Design with Bootstrap Fluid Containers
And it says : " Your div element should have the class container-fluid. " ( I did this ) but I cannot do this : "Make sure you have nested all HTML elements in .container-fluid. " ( I believe that I have to write sth in that class , but I don't know what exactly )
Ammar Najjar
@ammarnajjar
Mar 07 2016 15:58

@biancaburlacu ,

To get started, we should nest all of our HTML in a div element with the class container-fluid.

this means the same as I explained in my example, but the mentioned class is already defined in Bootstrap, so you don't have to define it

<div class="container-fluid" >
.... <!-- all elements here -->
</div>
