Why is it that if i paste my jquery code into my php include file, the 'close responsive menu on item click' doesn't close? The same code works if i paste it into the index.php, and the js script links that have been pasted into the include file work fine.

```
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.11.3/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script src="http://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.5/js/bootstrap.min.js"></script>
<script>
// Closes the Responsive Menu on Menu Item Click
$('.navbar-collapse ul li a').click(function() {
$('.navbar-toggle:visible').click();
});
// Scroll Animate
$(document).ready(function(){
// Add scrollspy to <body>
$('body').scrollspy({target: ".navbar", offset: 50});
// Add smooth scrolling on all links inside the navbar
$("#myNavbar a").on('click', function(event) {
// Prevent default anchor click behavior
event.preventDefault();
// Store hash
var hash = this.hash;
// Using jQuery's animate() method to add smooth page scroll
// The optional number (800) specifies the number of milliseconds it takes to scroll to the specified area
$('html, body').animate({
scrollTop: $(hash).offset().top
}, 800, function(){
// Add hash (#) to URL when done scrolling (default click behavior)
window.location.hash = hash;
});
});
});
</script>
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.11.3/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script src="http://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.5/js/bootstrap.min.js"></script>
<script>
// Closes the Responsive Menu on Menu Item Click
$('.navbar-collapse ul li a').click(function() {
    $('.navbar-toggle:visible').click();
});
// Scroll Animate
$(document).ready(function(){
  // Add scrollspy to <body>
  $('body').scrollspy({target: ".navbar", offset: 50});
  // Add smooth scrolling on all links inside the navbar
  $("#myNavbar a").on('click', function(event) {
    // Prevent default anchor click behavior
I've included the code to my issue (via markdown and and a link and CodePen) at the end.
I'm trying to create a main content area with a sidebar next to it. I want the main content area to take up 70% of the page and the sidebar 30%.
When I use "display:inline-block", I have to set the width of one of the divs down one percent for them to sit side-by-side; or I can use negative margin of at least 4px on one of the divs. Why is this? It seems inline-block won't allow 100% of the page to be taken up with two elements side-by-side.
Is using negative margin with inline-block the best way, or should I be using floats?
HTML
  <div class="wrapper">
      <div class="mainSection">
        <p>This is the main section</p>
      </div>
      <div class="sidebar">
        <p>This is the sidebar</p>
      </div>
    </div>
CSS
.wrapper {
  width:100%;
  max-width: 1000px;
  margin:0 auto; /*Center Content on larger screen sizes*/
}
.mainSection {
  width: 70%;
  max-width: 700px;
  background-color: #79A596;
  display:inline-block;
}
.sidebar {
  width:30%;
  max-width: 300px;
  background-color: #222326;
  color:white;
  display:inline-block;
/*margin:-4px; --->This fixes the issue, but why?, is this the best way?*/
}
@brandonwoz you can get what you want seems if your total width is < 100. set sidebar to 29%
@johnnysocko Any ideas why I can't get it at 100?
@johnnysocko
Mar 09 2016 00:58
@brandonwoz - no. Google it, sorry, that's what I would do
@brandonwoz thinking the outer container is 100, if the inner's are expressed as a % of the page, if they exceed what the outer has in % of the overall page, it will wrap
@TylertheBookworm Add the thumbnail class from bootstrap...and re-check your divs. You were missing a few closing divs.
<div id="portfolio-1" class="col-xs-4">
    <div class="thumbnail">
      <img src="https://placeholdit.imgix.net/~text?txtsize=19&txt=200%C3%97200&w=200&h=200">
     </div>
@brandonwoz here you go, add this to your outer div: white-space: nowrap;
Brandon Wozniewicz
@brandonwoz
Mar 09 2016 01:06
@johnnysocko It works, except I get the margin/white space between the divs. I want them to butt against (share a boundray) with one another. I can accomplish it with negative margin, but I thought maybe there was a better way.
slappy white
@johnnysocko
Mar 09 2016 01:10
@brandonwoz not sure negative margin is best way. assume you're getting border widths between your divs. if so, can set try setting them to 0.
@brandonwoz actually, haven't advanced to using div as much, back in the day would just use tables. suspect you're on the right track.
@hautemum36 how are you referring to your style? Try define with a period: .cat-photo-form and then refer to as class="cat-photo-form"
@mgmanuche133 as you create each <section> of your scaffolding, make sure you add a unique id to each. Then pop down to css and add something like;
section-id { min-height: 500px; background-color: #xxxxxx; } Give each section a different background color so you get a feel for how they'll flow together.
oops, that wasn't what I expected!
Kyle Corley
@kylecorley
@mgmanuche133 you can do that, but using tags like <header>, <section>, and <footer> is a better practice since it better describes the block of html and is more semantic.
@fluxrate you have a body tag below some of your other html!
all of that other code should be inside of the body tag
I think you want that body tag to be another div
@fluxrate - One thing that helped me was to create a <div class="row"> before I started breaking up the columns. If I'm understanding what you're wanting, then you can put the existing divs inside. After you get the spacing right for the title, then you could do your sub-heading in a separate div describing a second row. I'm new to this, and this is just an idea, but I think it could work.
Can I fit... like, all of that in a "row"? I mean, it's more than one row. It's the title, then an image, more like 2 or 3 rows. Would that work?
@jsun005 I'm wanting it to have spacing, then a well, then more spacing
@vishal0728 then yes, @xasuma is correct. You will need to style your "p" element with the styles the challenge is asking for
Mar 09 2016 04:16
@vishal0728 you don't need the part <p class="red-text" ,font size: 16px;> , delete the font size part on that line, since u already have it in the style at the top
Jared Pranke
@EtherWolf
Mar 09 2016 04:20
@xasuma No, your concern is reasonable, I'm sure I felt similar frustrations with FCC. Once you spend enough time doing markup and styling some things will be more obvious. Just be aware that there are like...over 20 types of inputs :).
@vishal0728 you'll need to remove "font size: 16px;" completely from the one element....since it's asking you to assign ALL p elements that font-size, the easiest way is to style p elements in your <style> section
@vishal0728 I prefer not to just give out answer. It's better for you if I help you understand the parts that are confusing for you, yeah?
Benjamin Gonzalez
@xasuma
Mar 09 2016 04:22
:point_right: brownie points [wiki]
The number beside your picture on Free Code Camp tells you how many Brownie Points you have.
A user profile picture next to a with Brownie Points score
There are three ways you can get Brownie Points:
  1. Complete challenges - you get one point per challenge you complete
  2. Post relevant links on Camper News - you get 1 point for posting a link, and another point for each upvote your link gets
  3. Help other campers in chat - each time you help another camper and they thank you (by typing "thanks @yourname"), you will get a point
Brownie Points help you look like the kind of person who codes a lot, shares relevant links, and helps people.
They also add to your Streak.
@xentricqt you're adding three classes to #target1
you need to understand that #target1 has the class btn so it gets shake, and it IS a button so it gets animated
the only thing you need to add to #target1 is btn-primary
I have an array like this [ [ 2, 'Hair Pin' ], [ 3, 'Half-Eaten Apple' ], [ 67, 'Bowling Ball' ], [ 7, 'Toothpaste' ] ] and I need to eliminate any duplicate entries. I used the following loop
for(var k=0; k<newArray.length; k++){
        for(var l=0; l<newArray.length; l++){
            if(newArray[k][1]===newArray[l][1]){
                console.log("This is equal = "+newArray[k][1]);
                newArray.splice(l, 1);
            }
    }
But apparently according to this loop Hair Pin and Bowling Bowl are equal. Why?
hey everyone. i'm having trouble getting the lat&lon from the DOM. If I console.log my global variable inside the callback function it shows that it's being set. But when I console.log() again after the actual call to the DOM it says it's undefined. Any advice..? Codepen: http://codepen.io/adampinsky/pen/yOYLge
Ankit Panwar
@coderNoob
Mar 09 2016 07:15
@adampinsky It's because data is undefined. It is merely an argument passed into the function. And the function gotData() is basically doing nothing.
and
lat = lat + position.coords.latitude;
    lon = lon + position.coords.longitude;
need to be
var lat =  position.coords.latitude;
var lon =  position.coords.longitude;
@coderNoob I declared lat & lon already in the beginning without initializing them. And, the .getJSON() method takes a callback function as a param (.gotData()), and passes the new JSON object into the callback function (.gotData(data) {}).
...right?
Ankit Panwar
@coderNoob
Mar 09 2016 07:42
@adampinsky You initialized your lat and lon as var lat = '&lat='; var lon = '&lon=';. That's what I meant.
Also, gotData() accepts an argument and you have not passed any when you called it.
I maybe wrong.
for (i=0; i<usernames.length; i++){
  // Create the url for getJSON
var url = 'https://api.twitch.tv/kraken/streams/' + usernames[i] + '?callback=?';
@AnnSiapno Why are you creating a function to log "done" to the console? If you simply want it to log "done" for each iteration to show you that it actually looped, you can simply write console.log("done"); on the line below your url creation, without the function wrapper around it. Now you're creating a function , but never calling it.
```
var url = 'https://api.twitch.tv/kraken/streams/' + usernames[i] + '?callback=?';
console.log("done");

that sent too early, but, I think it makes the answer clear enough, hopefully.

@chemok78 i remove "return result;" after "success: function(result){..." and put it after "sunrise: result.sys.sunrise,
sunset: result.sys.sunset
}
console.log(currentWeather);
return result;" - and see currentWeather in console. currentWaether is not empty no :). But i dont know why "getWeather(); console.log(currentWeather);" not work...

Guys I'm trying to generate a new, random background image every time I click on a button but it stops working after I click the button once. Do you have an idea why?
// Define the uri for the api
var url = "http://api.forismatic.com/api/1.0/?method=getQuote&key=457653&format=jsonp&lang=en&jsonp=?";
var imageUrl = "https://unsplash.it/600/900/?blur";

// Function that gets a quote
var getQuote = function(data) {
  $(".quote-content").text(data.quoteText);
  var quot = 'https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=' + data.quoteText + ' Author ' + data.quoteAuthor +' @antoninarcher';
  if (data.quoteAuthor === '') {
    data.quoteAuthor = 'Unknown';
  }
  $(".quote-author").text( data.quoteAuthor );
  $(".twitter-share-button").attr("href", quot);
};

// Get a quote when the page loads
$(document).ready(function() {
  $.getJSON(url, getQuote, 'jsonp');
});
// Change the quote when clicking on the button
$(".action").click(function() {
  //$("body").fadeOut("slow");
  $.getJSON(url, getQuote, 'jsonp');

  // Change the background when clicking
  $('body').css('background-image', 'url( ' + imageUrl + ' )');
  // Define the colors
  var colors = ["#34495e","#2ecc71","#3498db", "#8e44ad", "#f39c12", "#d35400", "#c0392b", "#bdc3c7", "#7f8c8d"];
  // Get a random number
  var rand = Math.floor(Math.random()*colors.length);
  $("body").css("background-color", colors[rand]).fadeIn();
  $(".card").css("color", colors[rand]);
  $(".btn").css("background-color", colors[rand]);
  $("body").fadeIn();
});
The image URL is at the top and the click function is in the second half!

clear your cache and hit refresh
like stay on the page and clear your cache and hit the button
i think you can force parts of the page to reload
maybe try .load() on the element after the image request
this is a pretty strange thing to want to do, why not just host a series of images yourself

That's what's blocking my requests. I found a chrome extensions that makes the calls succeed but obviously it's not a viable solution.

:point_right: writing a markdown file using atom [wiki]

Writing a Markdown File for GitHub using Atom

Markdown is a way to style text on the web, and GitHub users make use of markdown to provide documentation for their repositories.

From GitHub guides:

You control the display of the document; formatting words as bold or italic, adding images, and creating lists are just a few of the things we can do with Markdown. Mostly, Markdown is just regular text with a few non-alphabetic characters thrown in, like # or *.

You can use Markdown most places around GitHub:

  • Gist
  • Comments in Issues and Pull Requests
  • Files with the .md or .markdown extension

Markdown files have the extension .md and you'll see that a vast number of GitHub repositories have README.md files.

A great example is that if you want to write a Wiki file for this repository, it'll need to be a .md file. What you're reading right now is a markdown file called writing-a-markdown-file-using-atom.md.

Markdown files are easy to write, and you can find a markdown cheat sheet here.

:point_right: brownie points [wiki]

The number beside your picture on Free Code Camp tells you how many Brownie Points you have.

A user profile picture next to a with Brownie Points score

There are three ways you can get Brownie Points:

  1. Complete challenges - you get one point per challenge you complete
  2. Post relevant links on Camper News - you get 1 point for posting a link, and another point for each upvote your link gets
  3. Help other campers in chat - each time you help another camper and they thank you (by typing "thanks @yourname"), you will get a point

Brownie Points help you look like the kind of person who codes a lot, shares relevant links, and helps people.

They also add to your Streak.

Hi guys ... I think the :nth-child selector was not explained well ... at first I taught is select the nth child of an element ...but actually > "Selects all elements that are the nth-child of their parent." jQuery docs
Julien Lazare
@julienlazare
Mar 09 2016 15:36
thats why you use nth-child(number)
Ammar Najjar
@ammarnajjar
Mar 09 2016 15:36

@pragyes31 , use these to import jQuery, for the effect to work:

  <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.3/jquery.min.js"></script>

  <script type="text/javascript" src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jqueryui/1.11.3/jquery-ui.min.js"></script>

looks like there are some diffs in new versions..

@bbhavesh It's more like
var arr=["foo",42];
arr.shift(); // returns and removes "foo", I'm ignoring the return value here
arr.unshift("bar"); // puts "bar" in front of the other elements of arr, and returns 2, the new length of arr, going to ignore that, too
console.log(arr); // ["bar", 42]

Any one using Atom editor that may be able to help...

I can't figure out how to change directories in the tree view. My projects that are open are saved in another directory that is not showing in the tree view, and I can't figure out how to "back" up to that directory. I can only open folders in the default directory, and can't back out into a high-level directory. In other words I am in folder C, and it will let me go from C...D...E etc, but I can't get back to folder B.

Any ideas how to do this.

(this assumes D and E are sub folders of C, and C is a subfolder of B, in case that wasn't clear).

the problem when using variables to hold results... is it can changes on each iteration
ie.. on first loop.. result can be true...
but on second ... result changes to false...
so when u return result.... might not be whatever u want
