Hi I'm having trouble passing the "Size Your Images" test. I entered .smaller-image {
width:100px;
} in between the <style> tags however I'm still getting this wrong. What is my mistake?

Hi all, I have just reached Build a Tribute Page and am not sure how to tackle it. It seems like it needs Bootstrap knowledge beyond the level of the previous course lessons. Where do I go next for further help to proceed?
Steve Carroll

@garysmeade You don;t need Bootstrap
I recommend doing it w/o BS

So, I completed my portfolio challenge. It looks alright and the code is functional - I got it to do what I want. But the CSS is a mess, actually, the HTML probably is too. But, what I'm looking for is this...how would YOU clean up the CSS/general organization of my code? http://codepen.io/ACvis/pen/MyebVG

@ACVis same with padding: padding:0% 10%; 0% 10% ---> padding:0% 10%;
@ACVis Some guys like to order them alphabetically
@ACVis As for organization, group them logically and avoid class names like "#j1"... try to write for people that might be following you later, looking at your code, making changes (make things as obvious as you can).

Just learned "Use spans for inline elements". Is there any reason why one would want to use span to change the text color instead of using one of the simpler ways?
Steve Carroll
@SteveCarroll
Mar 13 2016 00:35
@avecmoncat To target specific elements (or a group of them).
mechascript
@mechascript
Mar 13 2016 00:38
like a more specific id?
Steve Carroll
@SteveCarroll
Mar 13 2016 00:40
@avecmoncat Not necessarily an id
mechascript
@mechascript
Mar 13 2016 00:40
I think I got it.
Steve Carroll
@SteveCarroll
Mar 13 2016 00:40
I mainly use an id for targeting javascript
NOt styling
Not that you can't but it can be a pain to troubleshoot and you don't get much for doing so.
mechascript
@mechascript
Mar 13 2016 00:41
I see. Have not gotten to JS yet. So I'm not sure about how to code most efficiently.
Steve Carroll
@SteveCarroll
Mar 13 2016 00:42
For css look around the 'net, for example: http://cssspecificity.com/
There, you'll learn that an id has a higher specificity than a class
What did yo mean by "one of the simpler ways"?
mechascript
@mechascript
Mar 13 2016 00:46
I understand class and id. I just didn't understand the reasoning behind using span to give the class "text-danger" to some text. But I'm sure span will be used in other upcoming tuts.
Steve Carroll
@SteveCarroll
Mar 13 2016 00:49
How would you color 1 word in a sentence?
'span' means to span this text... with these rules.
mechascript
@mechascript
Mar 13 2016 00:50
That's why I mentioned the id above, but now that you say it...ya, I get it now. You wouldn't use id just for a word or two.

:point_right: brownie points [wiki]

The number beside your picture on Free Code Camp tells you how many Brownie Points you have.

A user profile picture next to a with Brownie Points score

There are three ways you can get Brownie Points:

  1. Complete challenges - you get one point per challenge you complete
  2. Post relevant links on Camper News - you get 1 point for posting a link, and another point for each upvote your link gets
  3. Help other campers in chat - each time you help another camper and they thank you (by typing "thanks @yourname"), you will get a point

Brownie Points help you look like the kind of person who codes a lot, shares relevant links, and helps people.

They also add to your Streak.

@AdinEi When nesting an element, the nested element should be placed between both opening and closing tags, rather than inside them.

@AdinEi for example...

<div>
     <p>Hello World!</p>
</div>

My p element is nested inside my div element. Make sense?

Hi this is mycode for seek and destroy. It works fine. But someone in the chat before said that filter does not require a for loop to filter out the element in arrays. How can I do that?
function destroyer(arr) {
  // Remove all the values
 var args=[];
  for (var i=1;i<arguments.length;i++){
    args[i-1]=arguments[i];
  }

  for (var i=0;i<args.length;i++){
arr=arr.filter(function(val){
               return val!==args;

@Liam345 that works for you? doesn't for me. you're comparing pieces of arr to an array. i'm guessing you changed your code since pasting that to be return val!==args[i];? because that would work
anyway, filter runs a loop on the array it's called upon, so each part of arr is looked at. if you use indexOf you can check to see if each part of arr is present in args and return true or false depending

Prioritize One Style Over Another
Sometimes your HTML elements will receive multiple styles that conflict with one another.

For example, your h1 element can't be both green and pink at the same time.

Let's see what happens when we create a class that makes text pink, then apply it to an element. Will our class override the body element's color: green; CSS property?

Create a CSS class called pink-text that gives an element the color pink.

Give your h1 element the class of pink-text.

Run tests (ctrl + enter)
Reset Help Bug
Your h1 element should have the class pink-text.
Your <style> should have a pink-text CSS class with its color set to pink.
Your h1 element should be pink.

<style .class= "pink-text";>
body {
background-color: black;
font-family: Monospace;
color: pink;
}

</style>

How do i do this?

Hey guys, I'm trying to use an API for random quotes. Any idea why this script works in codepen, but not when I make it locally on my computer and open it in browser? P.s. I'm importing jquery in the bottom of the body in my html:
  $.getJSON("http://quotesondesign.com/wp-json/posts?filter[orderby]=rand&filter[posts_per_page]=1&callback=", function(a) {
    $("body").append(a[0].content + "<p>&mdash; " + a[0].title + "</p>")
  });

Hi, I'm on codepen for the first time for the first project. I can't seem to change my text size for anything I do. I have tried creating classes for it, tried applying the style directly to the p element, but nothing is changing the size...

:point_right: disable code auto run [wiki]

By default, the Free Code Camp site automatically loads and runs your last recorded solution. If you have accidentally created an infinite loop or other irrecoverable error or simply don't trust the code, you can disable code auto-run by putting the following in your URL:
run=disabled

Example:

URL: http://www.freecodecamp.com/challenges/Algorithm-meet-Algorithm#?solution=function%20meetBonfire(argument)

No-Run URL: http://www.freecodecamp.com/challenges/Algorithm-meet-Algorithm#?run=disabled&solution=function%20meetBonfire(argument)

SL0TR
@SL0TR
Mar 13 2016 07:12

Nesting just means putting one element inside of another element.

Now nest your existing a element within a new p element (just after the existing h2 element) so that the surrounding paragraph says "View more cat photos", but where only "cat photos" is a link, and the rest of the text is plain text.

This is the instruction
I am not getting where and how to nest the p element
This is the code :

yeah within a p element it seems
Some of these instructions are a bit confusing tbh
Dunebug
@dunethomas
Mar 13 2016 07:15
yes, so you need to put this:
<a href="http://www.freecatphotoapp.com">cat photos</a>
between an opening and closing paragraph tag <p> and </p>
SL0TR
@SL0TR
Mar 13 2016 07:16

Let me check
Dunebug
@dunethomas
Mar 13 2016 07:17
So just to the left of the <a href... you place <p>
and just to the right of that line after the closing </a>... you place the closing paragraph tag </p>

I did.
But one task still incomplete
our p element should have the text "View more " (with a space after it).
Your a element should not have the text "View more".
This one is incomplete

      longitude = position.coords.longitude;
      console.log(latitude + " inside " + longitude);

    });
  } else {
    $.getJSON('http://ipinfo.io', function(data) {
      console.log(data);
    })
  }
  console.log(latitude + " outside " + longitude);

});
$(window).load(function(){
  console.log(latitude + " outside2 " + longitude);
});

the variables latitude and longitude are only available in the function inside document.ready(), you can’t access it from window.load

create a function expression, have the function expression use latitude & longitude, return the function to a variable to whatever you define "outside" to be ...

Here is the question I am stuck on: Remember that in order to start a comment, you need to use <!-- and to end a comment, you need to use -->

Here you'll need to end the comment before your h2 element begins.

Comment out your h1 element and your p element, but leave your h2 element uncommented.

@Fen24 != is inequality, but !== is strict inequality.

here the different is between 'contacts[i][prop] !== false' and 'contacts[i][prop]'
The second has no codition
@BKinahan
why is different from the first?
Brendan Kinahan
@BKinahan

and so why i can't use contacts[i][prop] === true?
Brendan Kinahan

@Fen24 === is strict equality. it would check that the value is the actual boolean, true

Don't understand what the challenge "Create a bootstrap row" wants. It's asking me to add a div element below your h3 element. Code looks like this:

<div class="container-fluid">
<h3 class="text-primary text-center">jQuery Playground</h3>
</div>

<div class="container-fluid">
<div class="row">
</div>
</div>

Ah, figured it out

@ajaybti They've already added the id for you, like in your code above. Now you have to add it to the stylesheet to give it the green background colour.

@nick88p I am sorry I could't work on FCC yesterday later in the evening.
If you haven't solved your problem please check such code:

setTimeout(function(){
  alert(i);
  lightDivs[gameMoves[1]].css("background-color", colorPairs[gameMoves[1]][1]);
},1000);

You will notice, that alert() will display value 8 , but for this index is not pointing to anything in your array!
Problem is that you run your function inside loop, but because you have used setTimeout() function you change colors of divs after your loop is ended, that means that loop just made last i++ and ended, that's why your i variable has value 8!
You have to create another function to be run from your loop, in such way your function will receive copy of i index which will be valid for your function.
I guess you need something like this:

  function gamePlay() {
      function runDelayed(i) {
      setTimeout(function(){
        lightDivs[gameMoves[i]].css("background-color", colorPairs[gameMoves[i]][0]);
      }, 1000 *(i+1));
      setTimeout(function(){
        lightDivs[gameMoves[i]].css("background-color", colorPairs[gameMoves[i]][1]);
        },1000 *(i+1)+100);
    }

    for (var i=0; i<gameMoves.length; i++) {
      runDelayed(i);
      }
  }

CSS has a property called width that controls an element's width. Just like with fonts, we'll use px (pixels) to specify the image's width.

For example, if we wanted to create a CSS class called larger-image that gave HTML elements a width of 500 pixels, we'd use:

<style>
.larger-image {
width: 500px;
}
</style>
Create a class called smaller-image and use it to resize the image so that it's only 100 pixels wide.

:point_right: challenge nesting for loops [wiki]

Challenge: Nesting For Loops

If you have a multi-dimensional array, you can use the same logic as the prior Challenge to loop through both the array and any sub-arrays. Here is an example:

    var arr = [
      [1,2], [3,4], [5,6]
    ];
    for (var i=0; i < arr.length; i++) {
      for (var j=0; j < arr[i].length; j++) {
        console.log(arr[i][j]);
      }
    }

This outputs each sub-element in arr one at a time. Note that for the inner loop, we are checking the .length of arr[i], since arr[i] is itself an array.

Aleksander Gębicki
@Takumar
Mar 13 2016 15:29

@akwdezignz you have to use less than < operator in your if statement:

  if (val) { // Change this line
    return "Under 25";
  }

in such way that it works good. So in first condition you should check if val < 25. Right?

@Takumar the refresh didn't work, but I'm sure that code is alright. I'll show you:

Mar 13 2016 15:32

@TFRuiz you have two closing curly brackets:

.smaller-image {
width: 100px;
}
}

should be only one.
Rest of code looks good.

@Takumar I'll keep trying until I get it right. Here is what I did so far and the result keeps coming out as "Under 55" I have tried different numbers, also using the examples as stated: function myTest(val) {
if (val < '0') { // Change this line
return "Under 25";
}

if (val < 54) { // Change this line
return "Under 55";
}

if (val > 99)
return "55 or Over";
}

// Change this value to test
myTest(10);

Aleksander Gębicki

Mar 13 2016 15:48

@akwdezignz if you check if value is less than 25 you put:

if (val < 25) {
  return "Under 25";
}

When you want to check if value is 55 or greater you do:

if (val >= 55) {
  return "55 or Over";
}

For sure 99 is greater than 55 but you have to keep to given conditions. So if (val > 99) is not good solution.
This:

if (val < 54) { // Change this line
return "Under 55";
}

is also not good.

@AslamKhan810 you should comment out link to Lobster font so it is not available:

<!--<link href="http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Lobster" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
-->

Font family should remain the same:

h2 {
    font-family: Lobster, Monospace;

@Takumar I wound up doing this as you stated, and 55 rather than 54 function myTest(val) {
if (val < 25) { // Change this line
return "Under 25";
}

if (val < 55) { // Change this line
return "Under 55";
}

if (val >= 55)
return "55 or Over";
}

// Change this value to test
myTest(10);

Aleksander Gębicki
@Takumar
Mar 13 2016 16:00

@akwdezignz and this shoul work good, you have to add only curly bracket before the comment:

}
// Change this value to test

to close your function.

We need to reduce the length of the string or truncate it if it is longer than the given maximum lengths specified and add ... to the end. If it is not that long then we keep it as is.

@linuschoudhury You can iterate string with for loop or by forcing array iterators on it by .call() method. The for...in loop is not for iterating array or string indices.

Please, I don't know what I should do here: Create a Form Element
You can build web forms that actually submit data to a server using nothing more than pure HTML. You can do this by specifying an action on your form element.

For example:

<form action="/url-where-you-want-to-submit-form-data"></form>

Nest your text field in a form element. Add the action="/submit-cat-photo" attribute to this form element.

Nest your text input element within a form element.
