okay now more on how-to-npm... have you tried it at all? level 4 just gives me an error. just wondering if its me. i took the codeschool course, while i have tried running things, I really wanted to seperate things by project and thats not something they were teaching so maybe now i can retake it. I only watched the vids anyways.

That should fix it @michajo2k3

Mar 14 2016 00:05
@michajo2k3 yes you have to specify that its when hover is active
like @Prithvi-A mentioned
@Prithvi-A @cesarrodas So that worked for the first one, but the second one still does it...

can anyone help with the lesson #150 where its asking to convert celsius to fahrenheit? i simply am not grasping the java concept or what its asking of me.
Jeff
@meankraken
Mar 14 2016 00:38
@KevinBehlmaier So the function is giving you the value "celsius" as a parameter, you just have to make a variable called fahrenheit and then assign it the value of the variable celsius converted to farenheit

$("#auth").text(content.contents.quotes[0].author);
Daniel Bashir
@db7894
Mar 14 2016 00:59
@effinglame But notice that this is a nested array
David Wilbanks
@dwilbank68
Mar 14 2016 00:59
@HaroonGhawsi $("#auth").text(content.contents.quotes[0].author);
Daniel Bashir
@db7894
Mar 14 2016 00:59
@effinglame So what does that mean about myPlants and trees
David Wilbanks
@dwilbank68
Mar 14 2016 00:59
but you also need a div with an auth id, which you don't have
Jacob Hanawalt
@JacobHanawalt
Mar 14 2016 00:59
@db7894 trees is an object in an array within myPlants?
@db7894 or not object, I use that word too freely
Daniel Bashir
@db7894
Mar 14 2016 01:00
@effinglame Well trees is a type. The first thing you want to do is notice myPlants is itself an array
@effinglame Meaning that you can access one of the embedded arrays inside myPlants
Haroon Ghawsi
@HaroonGhawsi
Mar 14 2016 01:01
@dwilbank68 There is an error in console. Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'author' of undefined, I changed append to text as well
Jacob Hanawalt
@JacobHanawalt
Mar 14 2016 01:01
@db7894 so would that be something like... var secondPlant = myPlants[1][1] ?
Daniel Bashir
@db7894
Mar 14 2016 01:01
Almost there
@effinglame So now you need to use dot notation to append something in order to retrieve the tree you want
So how do you access that array?
Jacob Hanawalt
@JacobHanawalt
Mar 14 2016 01:03
@db7894 Would I do that using .push ?
Daniel Bashir
@db7894
Mar 14 2016 01:03
@effinglame Remember that you're just searching an array for a specific element
@effinglame So what you had before had the right idea, and what you just added to myPlants is correct
So now what do you need to do to get to the specific tree
David Wilbanks
@dwilbank68
Mar 14 2016 01:04
@HaroonGhawsi
works here... if you make a div for the #auth to sit in
Jacob Hanawalt
@JacobHanawalt
Mar 14 2016 01:04
@db7894 using dot notation>
?
Daniel Bashir
@db7894
Mar 14 2016 01:05
@effinglame Right so before you had myPlants.trees1
And you added 1 to myPlants
Jacob Hanawalt
@JacobHanawalt
Mar 14 2016 01:05
@db7894 var secondTree = myPlants.trees[1].pine
Daniel Bashir
@db7894
Mar 14 2016 01:06
Well pine isn't an array
So you can't access something within it
Jacob Hanawalt
@JacobHanawalt
Mar 14 2016 01:06
does "list" count as its own array?
Daniel Bashir
@db7894
Mar 14 2016 01:06
Where you had myPlants[1] that part was good
Appending another array using the dot operator was good
Yes it does
Do you see how?
David Wilbanks
@dwilbank68
Mar 14 2016 01:07
@HaroonGhawsi trying to see the structure of JSON sux without a site like https://jsonformatter.curiousconcept.com/ - paste in ugly JSON and get nice JSON out
Jacob Hanawalt
@JacobHanawalt
Mar 14 2016 01:08
@db7894 so trees and list are separate?
Daniel Bashir
@db7894
Mar 14 2016 01:08
@effinglame Yes
Jacob Hanawalt
@JacobHanawalt
Mar 14 2016 01:08
so I'm going deeper into the array than I thought
Daniel Bashir
@db7894
Mar 14 2016 01:08
And since you're referencing a specific element of the array myPlants you can use list because you would only be referencing one of them
Not exactly
list doesn't lie within trees since trees is declared as a type and separately
So you were almost there. You've chosen to access the second element of myPlants, now you can just access the element of list that you want and you're done

Mar 14 2016 01:11
@effinglame myPlants only has two elements
Jacob Hanawalt
@JacobHanawalt
Mar 14 2016 01:11
@db7894 sorry I'm not catching on that quickly
Daniel Bashir
@db7894
Mar 14 2016 01:11
@effinglame Notice that the type and list are both contained within brackets
So that's just one element for each of those pairs
Once you've chosen which of those two elements you want to access (which you did correctly), you can just append list and choose which element of list you want
Because you now only have one list to choose from

Hey all, trying to figure out why one $.getJSON is working fine on my page, but another returns "XMLHttpRequest cannot load. No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource." error
It returns an array which contains a single object
It returns just a JSON object
I can make the calls successfully in my browser and see the json object, but when firing a jquery $.getJSON call i get the following error
XMLHttpRequest cannot load http://api.forismatic.com/api/1.0/?method=getQuote&format=json&lang=en&_=1457928560337. No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource. Origin 'http://127.0.0.1:59507' is therefore not allowed access.

Hi all-ive been doing the bonfires for a while, but wanted to start an outside project. wanted to make a synthesizer with the library tone.js. I'm hitting a speed bump with on of my functions, would really appreciate some help. fxPass has an if/else statement. The else ive hardcoded variable bitCrush in there. I want to put in fx so it takes the info from the dropdown, but its just not working (i know i only have 2 effects listed, but im trying to get bitcrush to work). any help would be GREATLY appreciated -- thanks http://codepen.io/clefnetwork/pen/EKgEXz?editors=0010

In this (http://www.freecodecamp.com/challenges/target-the-same-element-with-multiple-jquery-selectors) what is the meaning of "Only add one class with each of your three selectors"?
Kia Farhang
@KiaFarhang
Mar 14 2016 04:48

@Enindu That means you don't want to add several classes to a selector. So you should aim for something like:

$("button").addClass("animated");

rather than

$("button").addClass("animated shake");

@clefnetwork - pretty cool little thing you've got there. :-)
It looks like you got it working. To clean up the code a tad, you could get rid of all the if statements and use bracket notation to refer to the fxPass objects as follows:

    fxPass(this[choice]);

  /* // ALL THESE IF/THEN STATMENTS REPLACED BY THE LINE ABOVE
    //if/then Selects what synth to use
    if(choice === "simp"){
        fxPass(simple);
    } else if(choice === "fm") {
        fxPass(fm);
    } else if(choice === "am") {
        fxPass(am);
    } else if(choice === "poly") {
        fxPass(this["poly"]);
    } else if(choice === "pluck") {
        fxPass(pluck);
    }//end if/then for selecting synth
  */

There's only one thing to watch out for... the choice string that comes back from your HTML dropdown is "simp" instead of simple. So you need to change that in the HTML to be "simple" instead. And then that 1 line takes care of doing the work of all those if statments.

Good job on getting it hooked up, tho! :clap:

I am working on Everything be True algorithm: http://www.freecodecamp.com/challenges/everything-be-true,
As per the algorithm I am getting the results correctly, but still the tests which should return true are still shown as false in test cases, Can anyone explain what is the problem.

function every(collection, pre) {
  // Is everyone being true?
  return collection.every(function(objVal) {
    return objVal.hasOwnProperty(pre);
  });
}

every([{"user": "Tinky-Winky", "sex": "male", "age": 0}, {"user": "Dipsy", "sex": "male", "age": 3}, {"user": "Laa-Laa", "sex": "female", "age": 5}, {"user": "Po", "sex": "female", "age": 4}], "age") should return false.

Since age is present in all objects, it should return true, still the test case requires the output to be false.

George
@clefnetwork
Mar 14 2016 05:12
hahahh
so @dunethomas would I replace it with the arguments for fxPass with [choice] and then.... do choice.triggerAttackRelease(note, "8n").toMaster();

@invinciblemuffi you also want to make sure pre is not a falsy value in order to return true. you actually don't even need to use hasOwnProperty() - maybe pay particular attention to

Remember, you can access object properties through either dot notation or [] notation

Mar 14 2016 05:51
@Jatudrei I think the point of Bootstrap is that it's already pre-built snips of code, so don't have to re-invent everything from scratch, each time you design a site; so saves time?
Jatudrei
@Jatudrei
Mar 14 2016 05:52
@natalka01 You mean it's a sort of library of built and vetted HTML & CSS code?
Natalka01
@natalka01
Mar 14 2016 05:53
especially for mobile/rwd; before mobile there were grid-designs as templates, also CMS like wordpress
or drupal; yep, a library, or, properly a framework, kind of like scaffolding so don't have to make initial structures each time
Jatudrei
@Jatudrei
Mar 14 2016 05:54
@natalka01 Sorry, I don't understand what you just said. What is rwd? What are "grid-designs as templates, also CMS like Wordpress," and why are these things worse than Bootstrap?
<==newbie
Natalka01
@natalka01
Mar 14 2016 05:55
oh, sorry, rwd=reseponsive web design (ie. designing for multiple screen sizes; critical in mobile, laptop, desktop, tablet, of all different size)
Jatudrei
@Jatudrei
Mar 14 2016 05:55
So Bootstrap is especially useful in such environments?
Natalka01
@natalka01
Mar 14 2016 05:57
grid-designs: used to be I would set up a site by doing it for laptop like 1024x768, with 12 or 16 columns, gutters (spaces between columns) a certain width, etc. So then design was visually driven. CMS=content management systems, wordpress is very famous one - started off as ez blogging, but can quickly turn into web design tool by making first page of blog be home page of website
Jatudrei
@Jatudrei

Mar 14 2016 05:58
I have a general question about asynchronous functions
and how callbacks completely scramble flow
Natalka01
@natalka01
Mar 14 2016 05:59
I did the grid in a program like photoshop or paint.net or whatever. The html was written as second step. Now that rwd is critical, you can't just design for one screen, because you don't know which screen size. So basically modules are needed, & bootstrap has these modules pre-built
Jatudrei
@Jatudrei
Mar 14 2016 06:02
I don't understand how modules help; would you please expain further?

Natalka01

Mar 14 2016 06:04
So the module might be a navBar module, or a footer module. These will stay self-contained & be available on different screen sizes, like a phone vs laptop, scaled up or down automatically, rather than having to re-write it every time. That's my take on it; I'm still trying to get it. Hth?
Jatudrei
@Jatudrei
Mar 14 2016 06:05
I see. Thank you very much for your help. You have at least given me an opening for understanding, from which greater understanding can no doubt be achieved with time.
Natalka01
@natalka01
Mar 14 2016 06:10
So like the jumbotron will still be hierarchically bigger & fully filling the screen, no matter which screen. Sure. It's basically a time-saver; reusable code, with concepts pre-built-in. Like buttons: you don't have to re-invent them everytime. Also, a lot of web pages used to be designed with 'tables' because early web design wasn't set up for visual design, just loads of text. Using 'tables' to line things up and make them pretty was a bad work-around since actually they were supposed to be for tables of data, for example a table of vote totals of the states on the vertical, the candidates on the top, and the #s on the
inside.
Also bootstrap is kind of like a CMS but using HTML instead of php like Wordpress; so it's more pure. ok back2my lessons!

What is boot strap?
Bootstrap is a free and open-source collection of tools for creating websites and web applications. It contains HTML- and CSS-based design templates for typography, forms, buttons, navigation and other interface components, as well as optional JavaScript extensions.
Also, another difference between Wordpress & Bootstrap- Bootstrap is front-end only; Wordpress has some back end (server side &/or database) components

Classes are reusable styles that can be added to HTML elements.

Here's an example CSS class declaration:

<style>
.blue-text {
color: blue;
}
</style>
You can see that we've created a CSS class called blue-text within the <style> tag.

You can apply a class to an HTML element like this:

<h2 class="blue-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>

Note that in your CSS style element, classes should start with a period. In your HTML elements' class declarations, classes shouldn't start with a period.

Inside your style element, change the h2 selector to .red-text and update the color's value from blue to red.

Give your h2 element the class attribute with a value of 'red-text'.

I tend to write elaborate codes such as this one for the Piglatin challenge:

function translate(str) {
var vowels = ["a", "e", "o", "u", "i"];

 var isVowel, cluster = [];

 var nstr = str.split("");

 //check if first letter in word is a vowel
 isVowel = vowels.indexOf(nstr[0]);

 if(isVowel === -1){
 //"this word starts with a vowel";

for(var a = 0; a < nstr.length; a++){

    isVowel = vowels.indexOf(nstr[a]);

  if(isVowel == -1){
    cluster.push(nstr[a]);
  }else{
    break;
  }

}

for(var b = 0; b < cluster.length; b++){
nstr.shift(cluster[b]);

nstr.push(cluster[b]);

if(b == cluster.length - 1){ nstr.push("a","y"); nstr = nstr.join("");}

}

}else{
//"this word starts with a vowel";

nstr.push("w","a","y");

nstr = nstr.join("");

}

return nstr;
}

translate("eight");

is there anything wrong with my coding pattern?

Instead of splitting and pushing everything, you could find indexes and reduce this to a few "surgical" string operations (slice/substr/substring). Also, instead of nstr.push("w","a","y"), nstr.push("way") would have been about the same (at least after nstr = nstr.join("")).

      cache: false,

      success: function(result) {

      //Manipulate DOM here or call a function to do that

        console.log(result);

      }

    });

  };

    wikiSearch = document.getElementById('inputSearch').value;

    getWiki(wikiSearch);

no problem bro @SL0TR the idea is to place the input text box within a form hence you are nesting it within the form...take for instance a bird's nest...the form is the nest and the input field is the eggs...goes inside the nest

I want to judge whether a property name correspond to any valid properties, in an array of objects.

but even that prop name points to nothing, this part (contacts [i] [prop]!=="") still return a true.

Problem Explanation:

  • The task is not that hard to understand, implementing it is the hardest part. You have a to validate an US phone number. This means there is a certain amount of numbers required, while you don't need to put the country code, you will still need the area code and use one of the few formats allowed.

@reynnanviktor You should have a second div around the paragraph. Your image is centered in the first div, you could make that smaller (for example col-xs-4) and the text larger (for example col-xs-8). Not sure xs is such a good idea here, would use something different, I think sm or md are alternatives (or a combination, like "col-sm-6 col-md-4" and "col-sm-6 col-md-8").

      if(Array.isArray(arr[i])){
        steamrollerRecursion(arr[i]); // call to the inner function
      } else{
        newArray.push(arr[i]);
      }
    }
  }
  steamrollerRecursion(arr);
  return newArray;
}

steamroller([1, [2], [3, [[4]]]]);

Otherwise you would return newArray, but that variable would keep the value, and when you call steamroller a second time it starts with a full array. When declared inside steamroller, you get a fresh variable every time.
There is also the version to have steamroller itself do the recursion, should be a pure function then (passing information only by the return value, concatenating all the returned arrays with Array.concat)

Hi guys, I've just started and I'm stuck with trying to understand CSS class declarations.
The example given is:<style>
.blue-text {
color: blue;
}
</style>
The example is asking to change the h2 element to red with the class red-text.
Aleksander Gębicki
@Takumar
Mar 14 2016 15:47
@supafish9 blue-text is name of your CSS class, you add period before it to let know that it is class.
Just add .red-text declaration to the <style> section like in example but with red colour.
supafish9
@supafish9
Mar 14 2016 15:47
@Takumar I'm not understanding how h2 is supposed to fit in there. Should it be .h2-text instead of .red-text?
Aleksander Gębicki
@Takumar
Mar 14 2016 15:48

@supafish9 you can make all <h2> headings red, by using element selector:

h2 {
  color: red;
}

But you want to make only one specific heading red, so you have to create .red-text class and use it later.
You use class by adding attribute to heading, for example:

<h1 class="blue-text">This heading is blue</h1>
supafish9
@supafish9
Mar 14 2016 15:52
So I've got <h2 class="red=text">CatPhotoApp</h2> but i'm not getting credit for "Your h2 element should have the class red-text"

@Takumar Do you have any idea how I can add a file to "patchwork" (a clone) on the gibhub tutorial?
I can't seem to figure out the most basic thing such as navigating to the library lib/ patchwork/ workspace/
all I see is workspace and below ... this is really frustrating ...
if I can find the folder on c9, then I can add a file, but the folder is nowhere to be found.

@nick88p if you are new to Linux environment, please spend some time on learning command line. Here you have link to CodeCademy course: https://www.codecademy.com/learn/learn-the-command-line it will help you for sure.
For sure you have to know basic commands like: cd - for changing directory and few others, you don't have to be Linux master.

<script>

    $(".btn").addClass("animated shake");
    $("#target1").addClass("animated btn-primary");
  });
</script>

    </div>
  </div>
</div>
X ) Only add one class with each of your three selectors.
Aleksander Gębicki
@Takumar
Mar 14 2016 16:13

@dardandemiri in these lines:

    $(".btn").addClass("animated shake");
    $("#target1").addClass("animated btn-primary");

you add two classes at a time

@dardandemiri please notice, that element with .btn class is button, so it has animated class already added by: $("button").addClass("animated");
The same with: #target1 is is button with .btn class so it has two classes which you add earlier. In such way you can add only one class in one line!
@dardandemiri so remove animated class in second and third line.

:point_right: brownie points [wiki]

The number beside your picture on Free Code Camp tells you how many Brownie Points you have.

A user profile picture next to a with Brownie Points score

There are three ways you can get Brownie Points:

  1. Complete challenges - you get one point per challenge you complete
  2. Post relevant links on Camper News - you get 1 point for posting a link, and another point for each upvote your link gets
  3. Help other campers in chat - each time you help another camper and they thank you (by typing "thanks @yourname"), you will get a point

Brownie Points help you look like the kind of person who codes a lot, shares relevant links, and helps people.

They also add to your Streak.

@pshweta13 I don't see a problem with responsive design, seeing as you do have the main content inside a container-fluid. You could always make the image responsive by adding img-responsive. Also, if you wanna keep margin: 100px; on body, best to override the top margin. So much of empty space at the top doesn't really look well.
