# Problem Explanation:

• This task requires us to look at each possible permutation of a string. This is best done using a recursion function. Being able to build a function which collects all permutations of a string is a common interview question, so there is no shortage of tutorials out there on how to do this, in many different code languages.
• This task can still be daunting even after watching a tutorial. You will want to send each new use of the function 3 inputs: 1. a new string (or character array) that is being built, 2. a position in your new string that's going to be filled next, and 3. an idea of what characters (more specifically positions) from the original string have yet to be used. The pseudo code will look something like this:

```
var str = ???;
perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far){
if(current string is finished) {
print current string;
}else{
for(var i = 0; i < str.length; i++) {
``````if(str[i] has not been used) {
put str[i] into the current position;
mark str[i] as used
perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far)
unmark str[i] as used because another branch in the tree for i + 1 will still likely use it;
}``````

Is there something I need to do extra to make that work? The example I'm pulling from is my current fcc task. The codepen is http://codepen.io/Jspadgett82/pen/KzgvYV they're on the bottom.

@ctal ok i googled and alot of stuff came up on it seemed it was almost bugged, i have this now

function myFunction() {
var myVar = "foo";

console.log(foo);
}
myFunction();

// run and check the console
// myVar is not defined outside of myFunction
console.log(foo);

do i need ot get rid of the console.log(foo); at the bottom it seems fairly pointless
googled it and got it figured out ty ty :)
ctal
@ctal
Mar 17 2016 00:24
@EskimoBurd When you have `console.log(foo);`, javascript is looking for a variable named `foo` and trying to print its value. Since there is no variable named `foo`, you get an error message. If you want to print "foo" to the console, you would use `console.log(myVar);`. Javascript looks for the variable named myVar and prints its value, in this case "foo"

this part is fine

``````<style>
now you would have an `img` element in the HTML, like this
`<img src=“….”>`
to it, add `class=“smaller-image”`
like
``<img class=“smaller-image” src=“….”>``
think I figured it out, seems to have been an issue with the extra background-size attributes...not sure what those are really for anyway though, just saw something that said they are helpful...
so, based on that...I have a question. I figured out it was the "-o-background-size: cover;" attribute that was causing the problem. What exactly was that attribute supposed to do anyway? I can't seem to find much info on what the -o- does
Hey guys, I'm on the intermediate alg. exercise "Convert HTML Entities"... the instructions say to convert the characters &, <, >, " (double quote), and ' (apostrophe), in a string to their corresponding HTML entities...
@crakapps you need to be using `arr` since it was passed into your function, not `testArr` which is just an example
@crakapps also if you pasted that correctly and `queue([5,6,7,8,9], 1) should return 5` isn't commented, you'll need to comment or delete that line.
hey guys hello.... how do I nest an i element within a button element??
DJ
@qualitymanifest
Mar 17 2016 05:12
@penny-lrz you nested your `img` element inside of your `a`. leave the `img` element alone. instead, create the `a` element with that URL, and put `cat photos` in between the `<a></a>` tags
as I am doing these sections, should I be memorizing each aspect as I go, or is it OK to reference them later
I am concerned about my retention, and deciding whether or not to restart and do everything again now, or wait until later and recall stuff as I need it
Mar 17 2016 08:35
It's okay if you don't remember everything . Make sure you have at least a basic understanding of what's going on before you move on. You'll be doing a lot of googling for references in the future. That's a normal part of being a programmer.
Kevin
@KevinBruland
Mar 17 2016 08:36
basic understanding and documentation reading skills are the most important parts. i google stuff all day long for stuff i have to code at work every day :D
Mar 17 2016 08:39
So tell me if I have this right? Jquery functions are async. Thus, while you can pass a variable into one, it is difficult to get one out. So in writing my code, best practice would be to nest the functions so that my variable are ever going inward as I pass them from one to the next?
Kevin
@KevinBruland
Mar 17 2016 08:41
for sure @nikosalonen, and that's something I am looking forward to. I am just trying not to jump ahead of myself and stick with the basics for the time being.
# Problem Explanation:
• You have to create a program that will handle when the register does not have
needs to return an array of the change in the form of an array, so that will
@blevajac how many times you want to request will determine what you can get like I just found one that allows 1000 calls then charges 0.00001c per ping lol
i dunno if your going to find a keyless one, they like to limit traffic using keys
@blevajac some people linked some here FreeCodeCamp/FreeCodeCamp#3714
like https://www.metaweather.com/api/ but even read the first line
if you hit their server more than once a minute they’re going to get a bit annoyed
Using jQuery, you can change the text between the start and end tags of an element. You can even change HTML markup.
jQuery has a function called .html() that lets you add HTML tags and text within an element. Any content previously within the element will be completely replaced with the content you provide using this function.
Here's how you would rewrite and italicize the text of our heading:
\$("h3").html("<i>jQuery Playground</i>");
jQuery also has a similar function called .text() that only alters text without adding tags.
Change the button with id target4 by italicizing its text.
plz help me out with this above problem
what should be the code for changing the text to make the Italicize
Can anybody help please i am stuck:
Your h1 element should have the class blue-text.
Both blue-text and pink-text should belong to the same h1 element.
My mission is that the #leftwell should have a red background
David Young
@dayvidwhy
Mar 17 2016 11:36
so dont do the .parent() part
Lorraine
@Lorraineg
@Lorraineg shortage of good developers sure
Albin Karlsson
@AlbinKarlsson99
Mar 17 2016 11:37
It says i shall do that to move to the next part, it says i shall use the .parent() element
Your left-well element should have a red background.
You should use the .parent() function to modify this element.
The .parent() method should be called on the #target1 element.
Only use jQuery to add these classes to the element.
David Young
@dayvidwhy
Mar 17 2016 11:37
so call it on #target1
# Problem Explanation:
• You need to create a program that will translate from English to Pig Latin. Check the instructions for converting to Pig Latin from the initial description or the wiki page. It might not be obvious but you need to remove all the consonants up to the first vowel in the case there letter does not start with a vowel.
David Young
@dayvidwhy
like make it fire every 1 pix and change the colour and you can make a scrolly rainbow
pretty much
thats how bootstrap does its stupid scrolling crap too
if you scroll a bit it takes over and pushes you down
I am taking the lesson Seek and Destroy at the Basic Algorithm Scripting course under the Front End Certification.
In this lesson FreeCodeCamp asks: "
Seek and Destroy
You will be provided with an initial array (the first argument in the destroyer function), followed by one or more arguments. Remove all elements from the initial array that are of the same value as these arguments."
this function is provided
function destroyer(arr) {
// Remove all the values
return arr;
}
destroyer([1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3],2, 3);
but just by running it, it doesnt consider the 2 and 3 after the array
David Young
@deedubwhy It is bad practice, because it is slower than for loop, because it looks over the prototype chain for properties, it doesn't preserve the index order and might cause bugs in real projects, if any library adds properties to arrays.
Hi! I have a quick moral question, I'm doing Basic Algorithm Scripting part and in one waypoint "Confirm the ending" the answer can be giving by using a simple String function that I've found from checking the MDN String page so many times. Would this be cheating and I should be doing everything from scratch recreating this function or I'ts okey what i just did?
David Young
@dayvidwhy
@Aledurax you should try and be a bit more generic
if you ask a more specific question you might get some help
Alejandro Duran
Mar 17 2016 14:35
I have to Check if a string ends with the given another string, FCC says to write my own code, I found the function String.prototype.endsWith() that does ALL the work so i just changed a line, it's not a function taught by FCC but it appears on the String page. Is it cheating?
David Young
@dayvidwhy
Mar 17 2016 14:36
well no, thats why theres built in functions
in terms of the exercise though it is a bit
have you looked at the indexOf() function?
I can't give my form element the id cat-photo-form
Jared Pranke
@EtherWolf
Mar 17 2016 17:56
@FearlessCode Yeah, just for clarity sake (because you will encounter this stuff on the daily), when you connect a class to an html element (h1, p, span, div etc.) you are attributing a class to that element. So <p class="red-text"></p> is the html element p, with the class attribute of "red-text". Anything that is wrapped in html tags(apart from the element itself) is considered an attribute, with the exception of pseudo-classes (whole other story brah). Once you have your html element attributed a class or id, you can select it in CSS for styling.
Which has the effect of hiding the element with the class
Does this mean set the width of this object to 50% of it's container - 10px? So if the container is 1440px `#about-info` would end up being 710px right?
