JD
@jdcogmon
Mar 20 2016 00:30
@Opiuo one says green and the other says gray. one is declaring a class and the other is setting up an element
@TheCodeJones perhaps i am telling you something you already know but each browser has its on javascript kit therefore its not too big a surprise that the two may look difference given that one is also being filtered through codepen
@Opiuo your second bracket is missing too
div .green-background {

@jdcogmon they look different everywhere i look at them, take my tribute page for example, i spent tons of time getting almost everything just how i wanted it( except the colors, i just threw them in there at the last min ) and then i post it on here and everything out of place or just doesnt scale right to the smaller window its displated on in here, and its even worse for my portfolio page because they teach you how to do almost nothing that is shown in the example, so when i try to add padding to the top of a section it runs into the next section, it was fun when i started to do it but it seems like the further i get the more it gets messed up and the less i know about how to fix it

@fdel15 http://codepen.io/ehutchllew/pen/pyyExP at the very bottom where I have the three photos, the left one is larger than the others. I want them all to be the same size, but not sure the best/most efficient way to do this. Not sure if I should be using rows/columns or something else (haven't learned much yet). Also the border sticks out on the sides and the only way I was able to center and separate the colums was by manually changing the margins.

Mar 20 2016 01:08
hi all

http://codepen.io/jshubbub/pen/vGKMVV?editors=1101

probably a simple fix I can't figure out: if you look at the social network icons in the pen, you see that the background is only as wide as the icon, but I don't like the inconsistency in width...any idea how I can set the background width to a consistent size (say 50px) so that I've got the icon contained within the correct color background with all buttons the same width?

the "fa-fw" class makes the background too wide for me...I'd like to use the width of the widest icon (g+ by the look of it) as the width for all the icons, if that makes sense

@StasiekK yeah mine is too. I assumed its because of the different screen sizes. ( like the bootstrap xs and md columns )

David Weedmark

a better solution is to add a new row after line 33 and close it at the end.
yes! that gives you your bg color
bootstrap does recommend enclosing all columns inside a row. I happened to read that a couple hours ago.
just cuz I like to paste code
    <div class="row">
<div class="col-xs-6 col-xs-offset-3">

# Learn how to plan your future project!

Blog post written by BiancaMihai - GitHub / Twitter

An ounce of preparation is worth a pound of cure. That's true in medicine, and that's definitely true in software development.

Here's a structured 10-step workflow that will guide you through the app planning process, with the goal of saving you from writing a lot of unnecessary code.

Together, we'll plan out a simple "To-do" single-page web app. We'll also plan for an API backend for a future mobile app.

@imnotarobot95 don't use p1 and p2, just p
if p1 and p2 is classes, then you need to put (dot) before, paragraph TAG then can use your new class like <p class="p1">ASD</p>

I'm stuck on the palindrome task I am quite close to solving it. Just one of the requirements is bugging me. Where am i going wrong?

function palindrome(str) {
// Good luck!
str = str.toLowerCase();
str = str.replace(/\d+|\s+|[.,\/#!$%\^&*;:{}=-_~()]/g,""); if (str == str.split("").reverse().join("")){ return true; } return false; //return str; } palindrome("1 eye for of 1 eye.."); CamperBot @camperbot Mar 20 2016 02:10 :star: 134 | @joestivala | http://www.freecodecamp.com/joestivala :star: 139 | @stasiekk | http://www.freecodecamp.com/stasiekk :star: 119 | @bharris62 | http://www.freecodecamp.com/bharris62 David Weedmark @DavidWeedmark Mar 20 2016 02:11 Blake Harris @bharris62 Mar 20 2016 02:12 ah sweet. @jdcogmon when did you start FCC? Garber @TheBGar Mar 20 2016 02:13 @bharris62 here's a brief explanation of brownie points explain brownie CamperBot @camperbot Mar 20 2016 02:13 ## :point_right: brownie points [wiki] The number beside your picture on Free Code Camp tells you how many Brownie Points you have. There are three ways you can get Brownie Points: 1. Complete challenges - you get one point per challenge you complete 2. Post relevant links on Camper News - you get 1 point for posting a link, and another point for each upvote your link gets 3. Help other campers in chat - each time you help another camper and they thank you (by typing "thanks @yourname"), you will get a point Brownie Points help you look like the kind of person who codes a lot, shares relevant links, and helps people. They also add to your Streak. :pencil: read more about brownie points on the FCC Wiki B. Pretty new here, working on the first CodePen project (a simple tribute) and I'm having some trouble with a few specific steps. Anyone have some ideas? Blake Harris @bharris62 Mar 20 2016 03:09 there are open source versions that are probably just as good for me David Weedmark @DavidWeedmark Mar 20 2016 03:09 especially don't miss the weekly updates @nicolesteck what are you stuck on? Blake Harris @bharris62 Mar 20 2016 03:10 what you got @nicolesteck oloughlinp @oloughlinp Mar 20 2016 03:10 @nicolesteck I am in the same boat.. its a jump from the previous tutorials Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:10 So I've got a lot of the "main" coding down, and the text/images inputted -- where I'm getting stuck is having my ratios for the main block of text match up with the sample, and it's also not working to try to specify different fonts Should I just copy/paste my code? David Weedmark @DavidWeedmark Mar 20 2016 03:11 yes please just the link actually Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:11 <link href='https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Open+Sans:300italic,300' rel='stylesheet' type='text/css'><div class="container-fluid"> <div class="box center-block" id="background-box"> <h1 class="text-center main">Millie the Dog</h1><i> <h3 class="text-center main">Warm heart, cold paws, bad breath</h2></i><br><br> <div class="photo-frame"> <figure><img src="http://i.imgur.com/vE6sXIg.png" alt="Millie the Dog" class="img-responsive center-block" id="Millie-pic"> <p class="text-center main">Millie may not love the snow, but she sure looks cute in it!</div></p> <br><br> <div class="row"> <div class="col-lg-3"></div> <div class="col-lg-5"> <h3>A timeline of the life of Millie:</h3> <br> <ul class="main"> <li><b>~2003-5:</b> Millie is born, likely somewhere near Georgia.</li> <li><b>~2011:</b> A posting goes out to midwestern rescues listing shelter dogs in the Deep South slated for euthanasia; Millie is on that list.</li> <li><b>2011/12:</b> A Rescue in IL arranges for Millie to be transported from Georgia; she is listed as a "Sanctuary Dog," for whom they do not expect adoptions to take place.</li> <li><b>August 2012:</b> I email and inquire about Millie; in Deb's response email, she states that she burst into tears when she realized I meant little Mill, as she didn't think anyone would ever want her.</li><li><b>September 2012:</b> Millie comes home with me!</li><li><b>2012-present:</b> I have a fuzzy-butted, stinky, rotten-toothed best friend by my side.</ul> <br><br> <p class="quote">"She's the most amazing dog I've ever had the pleasure of knowing; she brings such joy to my life."</p><h5 class="quote-attribution"><i>- Ben R, President, Millie Fan Club (I did a tribute to my dog.... Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:12 Sure, is there a way to link it so that it's not modifiable by anyone who opens the link though? Otehrwise I can PM it to you, just do not want to make it editable to everyone on an open forum. David Weedmark @DavidWeedmark Mar 20 2016 03:12 no one can modify you rcode... they can modify versions for themselves but it doesn't save to your page Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:13 ohh gotcha Blake Harris @bharris62 Mar 20 2016 03:13 yea i didn't think so, but wasn't for sure I havn't shared any yet David Weedmark @DavidWeedmark Mar 20 2016 03:13 Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:13 is that the right kind of link? Blake Harris @bharris62 Mar 20 2016 03:14 is that just a pic you did @DavidWeedmark David Weedmark @DavidWeedmark Mar 20 2016 03:14 @nicolesteck what's not lining up for you? @bharris62 I did that last year. just happened to stumble over it earlier today Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:15 We're supposed to essentially get as close to imitating the sample (http://codepen.io/nicolesteck/pen/grmPeG) as we can David Weedmark @DavidWeedmark Mar 20 2016 03:15 I used to write tutorials on how to do stuff in PS and Ill. Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:15 oops. pasted mine again...hold on David Weedmark @DavidWeedmark Mar 20 2016 03:15 @nicolesteck close to the example, but not exactly the same. except for an external link, I'd say you're about there, no? Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:16 and when I resize the window on my site, it doesn't resize as nicely as the original page. There are also different fonts in the quote at the sample's bottom, but when i try to implement a second font for that it messes it up. Blake Harris @bharris62 Mar 20 2016 03:16 only thing i can see is you could use a little less padding between pic Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:16 The link at the end should be easy, the different font selection and - most of all - the weird spacing are what's getting to me right now. Well when I modify the padding, it doesn't do too much - unless I'm modifying in the wrong area? I tried creating a row and splitting the areas to the left and right of the light gray area into ~2-3 columns apiece with the remainder to the main column, but that also didn't work. The spacing looks okay to me until I try to resize -- if you slide your mouse back and forth to gradually resize the window you'll see what I mean - much less smooth in my version, clearly there's something happening that I'm missing. StasiekK @StasiekK Mar 20 2016 03:19 Christopher Byrd @chrabyrd Mar 20 2016 03:20 Hi guys! Does anyone know if scrollspy works with dynamic pills? Or, more specifically, why I can't get it to work for me? http://codepen.io/chrabyrd/full/LNWpgo/ Thank you! RyanEnright @RyanEnright Mar 20 2016 03:20 @nicolesteck What specifically do you want to fix/change? Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:21 I would like the centering of the main dark column (which is not, despite how it might look, the background of the whole website) to mimic that of the sample referenced above -- i.e. take up the center 60% of the page at full-screen and slowly shrink to fit as the window is made smaller StasiekK @StasiekK Mar 20 2016 03:21 damn it braking :/ David Weedmark @DavidWeedmark Mar 20 2016 03:22 @nicolesteck your css is a bit messed up you've got brackets outside of brackets. look at line thirty where the font family is written twice Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:23 oh good catch - let me take a look David Weedmark @DavidWeedmark Mar 20 2016 03:23 @StasiekK it's looking good! except the nordic text Nitish @initishgupta Mar 20 2016 03:23 Hey guys I am stuck on "Change the Font Size of an Element" it is just not going through Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:24 @DavidWeedmark that was a strange byproduct of the way Google recommended you add fonts (https://www.google.com/fonts#UsePlace:use) StasiekK @StasiekK Mar 20 2016 03:25 @DavidWeedmark button is broken, when you minimize a browser window text is outside button :/ Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:25 @initishgupta Where did you add the font size modifier? Is it inside the <style> section? Nitish @initishgupta Mar 20 2016 03:25 It's inside Style only @nicolesteck Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:25 @initishgupta can you copy and paste the code here? Alex Myers @qckpckt Mar 20 2016 03:26 Hi guys. I’m working on the portfolio project, and I need some advice Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:26 @StasiekK I agree that looks great - the one thing (which isn't even slightly related) is that you misspelled Michael. :) Nitish @initishgupta Mar 20 2016 03:26 <style> .red-text { color: red; font-size: 16px; } </style> <h2 class="red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2> <p class="red-text">Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p> <p>Purr jump eat the grass rip the couch scratched sunbathe, shed everywhere rip the couch sleep in the sink fluffy fur catnip scratched.</p> Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:26 Yep, so you need to specify that the font size is for the <p> element David Weedmark @DavidWeedmark Mar 20 2016 03:26 @nicolesteck try replacing your css with this body { background-color: white; } h2 { font-family: Sans-Serif; } .photo-frame { background-color: white; padding: 5px; border-radius: 2px; } #Millie-pic { width: 100%; } .box { background-color: #d3d3d3; padding: 50px; border-radius: 10px; } .quote { font-size: 20px; font-family: 'Open-Sans'; } .quote-attribution { font-size: 15px; font-family: Open-Sans; } Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:27 so @initishgupta you need to close the curly brackets on the color: red and then open another with p {font-size: 16px;} StasiekK @StasiekK Mar 20 2016 03:27 @nicolesteck lol :+1: Micheal is Polish Michal (you remove e) Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:27 OH my mistake! hahah sorry about that @StasiekK @DavidWeedmark thanks will try that right now. I saw that the example page looks very much like a bootstrap template, so I started off by just copying and pasting the code for the navbar and content from a template I found on the bootstrap website. I kind of feel like this is cheating. What do you guys think? David Weedmark @DavidWeedmark Mar 20 2016 03:29 @qckpckt copying and pasting kinda is, yeah but not using bootstrap @qckpckt you know you can add bootstrap automatically to the CSS? StasiekK @StasiekK Mar 20 2016 03:30 @nicolesteck ok i did correct now :) Blake Harris @bharris62 Mar 20 2016 03:30 does anyone pay for fancy pro codepen? RyanEnright @RyanEnright Mar 20 2016 03:30 @qckpckt ok to use bootstrap but use the bootstrap website and type everything, read the documentation and understand what does what. Thats my advice David Weedmark @DavidWeedmark Mar 20 2016 03:30 ah. I didn't think Faraday was Polish Alex Myers @qckpckt Mar 20 2016 03:31 @DavidWeedmark yes I know that. I added bootstrap, and then copy-pasted the code from a bootstrap template you can download from bootstrap website. @RyanEnright I agree. I didnt learn anything by my approach. I’m now trying to build a navbar from scratch but I’m not really clear on what I’m doing or why. David Weedmark @DavidWeedmark Mar 20 2016 03:32 @qckpckt want to post your link? Alex Myers @qckpckt Mar 20 2016 03:32 I deleted the project. @DavidWeedmark I’m starting from scratch. Nothing to show yet Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:33 @DavidWeedmark that helped with changing the font of the majority of the text, but did not correct the font of the quote itself (which still has some funky stuff going on in its code anyway); the spacing (visible when you change the size of the window - and in comparison to the sample) is the more pressing issue IMOl. RyanEnright @RyanEnright Mar 20 2016 03:33 @qckpckt this will give you a decent tutorial on how to build a navbar yourself, if thats what you're interested in doing. http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_navbar.asp lenaecb @lenaecb Mar 20 2016 03:34 Looking for some help to some font sizing for responsive... here's the code i have calling media query... @media only screen and (max-width: 767px) { h1.intro-message { font-size: 14em; } h2.intro-message { font-size: 10em; } } David Weedmark @DavidWeedmark Mar 20 2016 03:34 @nicolesteck I'll take another look Blake Harris @bharris62 Mar 20 2016 03:34 @qckpckt I believe you will learn significantly more doing it from scratch. In the CSS David Weedmark @DavidWeedmark Mar 20 2016 03:36 @nicolesteck for the spacing, do you mean how the quote looks compared to the bullet points above? oloughlinp @oloughlinp Mar 20 2016 03:36 Nevermind, I'm dumb. Bu why doesn't it iveride the margin from the other CSS block? Alex Myers @qckpckt Mar 20 2016 03:36 @RyanEnright Thanks for that. I guess I’m getting confused by the addition of bootstrap. Like, it already has classes built for navbars, but I cant seem to find any documentation explaining why theyre built the way they are David Young @dayvidwhy Mar 20 2016 03:37 @oloughlinp because ones positive and ones negative? lol StasiekK @StasiekK Mar 20 2016 03:37 @oloughlinp a bit of tip, try using only bootstrap i guarantee you learn alot Nicole S. @nicolesteck Mar 20 2016 03:38 @DavidWeedmark no -- if you look at the sample (http://codepen.io/FreeCodeCamp/full/wMQrXV) you can see that there is a distinct white background, with a gray box centered on the screen that contains all of the text and other information. That gray box's margin to the edges of the page changes from very large to nothing depending on the size of the screen. David Young @dayvidwhy Mar 20 2016 03:38 @StasiekK lol really? the opposite sounds more true StasiekK @StasiekK Mar 20 2016 03:39 @deedubwhy css way is easy, it can be hard placing boxes, but i think bootstrap is great for this David Young @dayvidwhy Mar 20 2016 03:41 @oloughlinp dunno, if you inspect the element chrome seems to think it has no padding even if you put it in codeine. have you considered trying it locally instead of using codepen? Joseph Gereghty @joegereghty1989 Mar 20 2016 03:41 Create a class called gray-background with the background-color of gray. Assign this class to your div element. <div> .gray-background {background-color: gray;} <p>Things cats love:</p> <ul> <li>cat nip</li> <li>laser pointers</li> <li>lasagna</li> </ul> <p>Top 3 things cats hate:</p> <ol> <li>flea treatment</li> <li>thunder</li> <li>other cats</li> </ol> </div> can anyone help? David Young @dayvidwhy Mar 20 2016 03:41 @StasiekK if it was way easy you wouldn’t call placing boxes hard using a library to do the hard stuff fundamentall abstracts your knowledge of whats happening eg using jquery$(#) selectors instead of document.getelementbyid

@nicolesteck for the font, I can't find the open sans 300 italic, only a light italic. I've got to go, but I'd suggest getting the google font again, deleting the code at the top of your HTML and instead using the import option, pasted at the top of your CSS @import url(https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Open+Sans);.... but mostly to fix the tags in your HTML including the <figure> tag which is kinda hanging there all by itself

@nicolesteck I am doing one of the bootstrap practices on freecodecamp, these were the instructions Add a div element below your h3 element.
Your div element should have the class row
Your row div should be nested inside the container-fluid div
Make sure your div element has a closing tag.

This is the code I have. // Setup function phoneticLookup(val) { var result = ""; // Only change code below this line var lookup = { "alpha": phoneticLookup(val){ return "Adams"; }, "bravo": phoneticLookup(val){ return "Boston"; }, "charlie": phoneticLookup(val){ return "Chicago"; }, "delta": phoneticLookup(val){ return "Denver"; }, "echo": phoneticLookup(val){ return "Easy"; }, "foxtrot": phoneticLookup(val){ return "Frank"; } }; // Only change code above this line return result; } // Change this value to test phoneticLookup("charlie"); The instructions are: "Convert the switch statement into a lookup table called lookup. Use it to lookup val and assign the associated string to the result variable." Sorry , this is what I actually have. That was an older attempt. // Setup function phoneticLookup(val) { var result = ""; // Only change code below this line var lookup = { "alpha": lookup(result){ return "Adams"; }, "bravo": lookup(result){ return "Boston"; }, "charlie": lookup(result){ return "Chicago"; }, "delta": lookup(result){ return "Denver"; }, "echo": lookup(result){ return "Easy"; }, "foxtrot": lookup(result){ return "Frank"; } }; // Only change code above this line return result; } // Change this value to test phoneticLookup("charlie"); Umar Khan @umar-khan Mar 20 2016 05:05 Looks like the main issue here is that your structure of the lookup variable your goal in this exercise is to create an object called 'lookup' which has the necessary key/value pairs An object looks like this var person = { firstName:"John", lastName:"Doe", age:50, eyeColor:"blue" }; you've got something like var lookup = { "alpha": lookup(result){ return "Adams"; }, "bravo": lookup(result){ return "Boston"; }, Benjamin Gonzalez @xasuma Mar 20 2016 05:07 Like this // Setup function phoneticLookup(val) { var result = ""; // Only change code below this line var lookup = { "alpha": "Adams"; "bravo": "Boston"; "charlie": "Chicago"; "delta": "Denver"; "echo": "Easy"; "foxtrot": "Frank"; }; // Only change code above this line return result; } // Change this value to test phoneticLookup("charlie"); Umar Khan @umar-khan Mar 20 2016 05:08 yup exactly you've got your lookup object sorted out Benjamin Gonzalez @xasuma Mar 20 2016 05:08 Then how do I link the return result to the lookup object? Umar Khan @umar-khan Mar 20 2016 05:08 now you need to lookup the value (val) as the key in that object how do you search an object for a key? Abdul Awali @awalthefirst Mar 20 2016 05:09 results = objectName[variable] Umar Khan @umar-khan Mar 20 2016 05:09 yup Benjamin Gonzalez @xasuma Mar 20 2016 05:10 but, I am not supposed to change that line of code. Umar Khan @umar-khan Mar 20 2016 05:10 you don't have to You've defined your lookup object Benjamin Gonzalez @xasuma Mar 20 2016 05:10 Yes Umar Khan @umar-khan Mar 20 2016 05:11 now you know if you want to search your object for a key, you do lookup[variablename] so if you want to make result equal to that you can do result = lookup[variablename]; also one thing regarding your object you end each line with a semi-colon it should end in a comma var lookup = { "alpha": "Adams", "bravo": "Boston", "charlie": "Chicago", "delta": "Denver", "echo": "Easy", "foxtrot": "Frank" }; Benjamin Gonzalez @xasuma Mar 20 2016 05:14 omg, that was it. Hi everyone, need help please. I was starting to do my first profile page tutorial. I dislike the codepen.io so, I set off to do the coding on a editor on my system. In the tutorials prior to this the jquery was not explicitly added in the header file since fCC adds it in the background. So what is the jquery CDN that I must add on page to get the animations work on my editor?

<i class="fa fa-thumbs up"></i>

</button>

Attention to detail…if you don’t have it you’ll waste hours unnecessarily, and nobody will want to pay for that
It’s frustrating but will make it that much harder in the end
but it’s good if you have awesome coworkers and people are constantly around to answer questions…hopefully they are!
