<p class="red-text">Purr jump eat the grass rip the couch scratched sunbathe, shed everywhere.</p>

and this is my challange @DanteLooper >You need 2 p elements with Kitty Ipsum text.
Make sure each of your p elements has a closing tag.
Your p element should contain the first few words of the provided additional kitty ipsum text.
Do not add a class attribute to the second p element, without removing it from the first one.
Give elements with the p tag a font-size of 16px. Browser and Text zoom should be at 100%.

:point_right: 10 steps to plan better so you can write less code [wiki]

Learn how to plan your future project!

Blog post written by BiancaMihai - GitHub / Twitter

An ounce of preparation is worth a pound of cure. That's true in medicine, and that's definitely true in software development.

Here's a structured 10-step workflow that will guide you through the app planning process, with the goal of saving you from writing a lot of unnecessary code.

Together, we'll plan out a simple "To-do" single-page web app. We'll also plan for an API backend for a future mobile app.

:point_right: writing a markdown file using atom [wiki]

Writing a Markdown File for GitHub using Atom

Markdown is a way to style text on the web, and GitHub users make use of markdown to provide documentation for their repositories.

From GitHub guides:

You control the display of the document; formatting words as bold or italic, adding images, and creating lists are just a few of the things we can do with Markdown. Mostly, Markdown is just regular text with a few non-alphabetic characters thrown in, like # or *.

You can use Markdown most places around GitHub:

  • Gist
  • Comments in Issues and Pull Requests
  • Files with the .md or .markdown extension

Markdown files have the extension .md and you'll see that a vast number of GitHub repositories have README.md files.

A great example is that if you want to write a Wiki file for this repository, it'll need to be a .md file. What you're reading right now is a markdown file called writing-a-markdown-file-using-atom.md.

Markdown files are easy to write, and you can find a markdown cheat sheet here.

@chemok78 you can have an empty array: var arr = []; and then push the number to the array. arr.push(num);

@alexanderkopke yeah so u get a number and convert it to roman numerals
trying to convert number to array first
Josh Alling
@joshalling
Mar 23 2016 02:57
@chemok78 you can convert each string back to a number with parseInt()
worlund
@worlund
Mar 23 2016 02:58
I mean you could do a loop and just pluck each digit out of the int with modulo 10 and then dividing it by 10. Or just convert it to a string and split it on "" and then use parseInt() to convert them back to integers
Jay Mok
@chemok78
Mar 23 2016 02:58
@joshalling ok parseInt()
let me check that thanks
Alexander Køpke
@alexanderkopke
Mar 23 2016 02:58
@chemok78 ok I think you have to make it into string first, then split it.. then you can iterate the array and do parseInt() https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Global_Objects/parseInt

I'm doing the profile lookup function and this is what I have right now, but I realized that doing firstName==contacts[firstName] is incorrect since it only checks one value out of all the names and I was wondering if I have to loop through all of contacts and check all of its firstName value or if there was a better way to do it.
function lookUp(firstName, prop){
// Only change code below this line
  if(firstName == contacts[firstName])
    {
      if(prop == contacts[prop])
        {
          return contacts[prop];

how to override class declarations over by styling id attributes
Your h1 element should have the class pink-text.
Your h1 element should have the class blue-text.
Give your h1 element the id of orange-text.
Create a CSS declaration for your orange-text id
Do not give your h1 any style attributes.
Your h1 element should be orange.

But, here’s the gist of what I know
ID have priority over class
Caleb
@superbarnie
Mar 23 2016 04:15
give your h1 the id="orange-text", then in your css styles give #orange-text the style color: orange;
jhches21
@jhches21
Mar 23 2016 04:16
Yea. Even if the h1 have classes in it
the id selector will give priority over the class’s color
i.e. #orange-text > .blue-text
Arpan

I need some help with CSS
I need help using a CSS class to style and element
Your h2 element should be red.
Your h2 element should have the class red-text.
Your stylesheet should declare a red-text class and have its color set to red.
Do not use inline style declarations like style="color: red" in your h2 element.

<h2>CatPhotoApp</h2>

<style>
h2
.red-text {
color: red;
}
</style>

<p>Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>

what am I doing wrong??

Hi! I'm trying to use a class to change the color of the h1 text to pink, but it doesn't seem to be working. I know it's a problem with the <style> portion but can't seem to figure out what... It seems to match some examples people were discussing above. Am I missing something obvious?

<style>
body {
background-color: black;
font-family: Monospace;
color: green;
}
.pink-text: {
color: pink;
}

</style>

<h1 class="pink-text">Hello World!</h1>

@gerardjorgensen yeah, I think so. contacts consists of an array with objects inside and whenever there is an array with more than one item inside you'll most likely want to do that. But of course you can write code that looks into each item of the array. if( contacts[0].firstName === firstName){} would check if the value of firstName in the object in the array is equal to what the variable firstName has passed to the function such as Akira.

you can actually do something liek this...
<style>
  h2 {
    font-size: 50px;
  }
  .red-text {
    color: red;
  }
</style>
@rielyannm but since there’s nothing in front of h2

@meankraken you have to hold on to the value, via closure, a constructor is just a function at the end of the day so the idea of closure still apply to it

it seems when i add "well" it doesn't recognize the col-xs-6
Jeff
@meankraken
Mar 23 2016 05:41

here's my code so far:

var Person = function(firstAndLast) {
   this.firstAndLast = firstAndLast; //without this line, the constructor won't set the name

    this.getFirstName = function() {
  var arr = this.firstAndLast.split(" ");
  return arr[0];
   };

   this.getLastName = function() {
  var arr = this.firstAndLast.split(" ");
  return arr[1];
    };

    this.getFullName = function() {
      return this.firstAndLast;
    };

   this.setFirstName = function(first) {
      var arr = this.firstAndLast.split(" ");
      arr[0] = first;
      this.firstAndLast = arr.join(" ");
   };

   this.setLastName = function(last) {
      var arr = this.firstAndLast.split(" ");
      arr[1] = last;
      this.firstAndLast = arr.join(" ");
   };

  this.setFullName = function(firstAndLast) {
     this.firstAndLast = firstAndLast;
  };

};

var bob = new Person('Bob Ross');

Without that first line, I'm not sure how to immediately set the name via constructor

hnry
@hnry
Mar 23 2016 05:43
@meankraken no this.firstAndLast = firstAndLast; do var name = firstAndLast;
i would recommend storing the name as an array or object though
so you don't have to repeat yourself and keep splitting

function sumAll(arr) {

Why is this returning as null
when arr is two numbers
sumAll([1,4])
when 'bigger' is returned
returns null
Andrew Gudovich
@andgudovich
Mar 23 2016 06:34
@SeanSaibot you forgot to add return operator
@SeanSaibot like this — return bigger;
Sean
@ofperfection
Mar 23 2016 06:37
function sumAll(arr) {
  var bigger = Math.max(arr);
  var smaller= Math.min(arr);
  var total  = 0;

  for(var i=smaller;i<bigger;i++){
    total += i;

  }

  return bigger;
}

sumAll([1, 4]);
I was just trying to return bigger to test the use of the Math.max function which i'm not familiar with
and it's returning null
it won't let me use the spread operator described in the documentation either

@Gdb91 Okay, I’ve looked closely.
Your apiCall url is wrong.
Make sure you add http:// at beginning
and get rid of &callback=?

Challenge: Using Objects for Lookups

Objects can be thought of as a key/value storage, like a dictionary. If you have tabular data, you can use an object to "lookup" values rather than a switch statement or an if/else chain. This is most useful when you know that your input data is limited to a certain range.

Here is an example of a simple reverse alphabet lookup:

var alpha = {
  1:"Z",
  2:"Y",
  3:"X",
  4:"W",
  ...
  24:"C",
  25:"B",
  26:"A"
};
alpha[2]; // "Y"
alpha[24]; // "C"

what's wrong w/this code?

``` // Setup
function phoneticLookup(val) {
var result = "";
// Only change code below this line
val={
"alpha": "Adams",
"bravo" :"Boston",
"charlie":"Chicago",
"delta": "Denver",
"echo " :"Easy",
"foxtrot":"Frank"
};
result=val.charlie;
// Only change code above this line
return result;
}
// Change this value to test
phoneticLookup("charlie"); ```
Each of your Bootstrap buttons should be nested within its own div element with the class col-xs-4.
<div class="container-fluid">
