@HTMLNoob if you do var data = json; data would contain the same as json and you can use it as an object. Do an console.log(json); to see in console what json contains and analyse object structure.
@HTMLNoob sure, but it might be a good idea to make variables that address different values inside the json to make it more clear what is what.

I am on factorialize a number #2 algorithm and this is my code

function factorialize(num) {
  return num;
}

var total = 1;
var i = factorialize(5);

if(i>0){
  for(i; i> 0 ; i--){
    total*= i;
  }
}else {
    total = 1;
}

It does everything I am asked to do, but for some reason it doens't like it. Any ideas?

Patrick Ayres
@Pat-Ayres
Mar 26 2016 02:22
@xasuma your code needs to go inside the factorialize function so it can be called and returned
for example:
function factorialize(num) {
    if (num > 0) {
        for (num; num > 0; num--) {
            num *= num;
        }
    } else {
        num = 1;
    }
    return num;
}

Hey, can someone take a look at my code for Title Case A Sentence and tell me where I'm going wrong? The function keeps returning the original sentence with no changes at all. Commented it to show what I think should be going on. Not looking for someone else's code to copy, just want pointers if that's cool.
function titleCase(str) {
  // split string into words by space
  var words = str.split(' ');
  // set up a loop for each word
  for (i = 0; i < words.length; i++) {
    // split word into letters
    var letters = words[i].split();
    // set up loop for each letter
      for (j = 0; j < letters.length; j++) {
        //change each letter to lower case
        letters[j].toLowerCase();
      }
    //change first letter to upper case
      letters[0].toUpperCase();
    // join letters back into word
      letters.join();
  }
  // join words back into sentence with space
  str = words.join(' ');
  // return title case sentence
  return str;

}

titleCase("I'm a little teapot");

Hi guys, working on the factorialize challenge and could use a hand. The idea is to develop a function that gives you the sum of itself multiplied by all the integers below it. So, for 5 it would do 54321=120.Here's my code, not sure why it doesn't work:
function factorialize(num) {
  var result=1
  var arr = [];
  for (var i=1;i<=num;i++){
    arr.push(i);
  }
  for (var j=0;j<=arr.length;j++){
    result = result*arr[j];
  }
  return result;
}

@Kiltreiser the easiest way to see what is going on is to use console.log() statements at the various points where you commented what you think should be happening to compare the actual output with what you expect. this will allow you to narrow down the location of the bug and make it easier to determine the cause

@Kiltreiser you should add apostrophes or quotation marks when you split a word into letters, then you will get an array of characters
var letters = words[i].split('');

@Pat-Ayres I just tried the console. When I try to split each items in my words array into letters, it just seems to split the array into separate arrays, each containing a single word, not letters

    if (num > 0) {
        for (i = 1; i <= num; i++) {
            result *= i;

On the "check for palindromes" the very last check says
palindrome("0_0 (: /-\ :) 0-0") should return true.
and I am trying to figure out why, since a underscore is not the same as a dash. And this is the only problem I am having with the algorithm.

@xasuma you're supposed to replace all non-alphanumerics

@qualitymanifest I guess a underscore is considered a alphanumerical by the replacer I am using. I see
DJ
@qualitymanifest
Mar 26 2016 05:15
@xasuma you're using \W i'm assuming?

http://www.w3schools.com/jsref/jsref_regexp_wordchar_non.asp

The \W metacharacter is used to find a non-word character.
A word character is a character from a-z, A-Z, 0-9, including the _ (underscore) character.

Benjamin Gonzalez

Mar 26 2016 05:16
@qualitymanifest Yes
For some reason it thinks the underscore is an alphanumerical. I can't figure out how to fix it.
DJ

you just need to include underscores in your replace
Benjamin Gonzalez

Mar 26 2016 05:22

@qualitymanifest I got it to work with 2 statements like this

str= str.replace(/\W/g, "");
    str= str.replace(/_/g, "");

But I am wondering how would I put both of them in one ? I was trying and couldn't

:point_right: algorithm no repeats please [wiki]

Problem Explanation:

  • This task requires us to look at each possible permutation of a string. This is best done using a recursion function. Being able to build a function which collects all permutations of a string is a common interview question, so there is no shortage of tutorials out there on how to do this, in many different code languages.
  • This task can still be daunting even after watching a tutorial. You will want to send each new use of the function 3 inputs: 1. a new string (or character array) that is being built, 2. a position in your new string that's going to be filled next, and 3. an idea of what characters (more specifically positions) from the original string have yet to be used. The pseudo code will look something like this:

    ```
    var str = ???;
    perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far){
    if(current string is finished) {
    print current string;
    }else{
    for(var i = 0; i < str.length; i++) {
    if(str[i] has not been used) {
      put str[i] into the current position;
      mark str[i] as used
      perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far)
      unmark str[i] as used because another branch in the tree for i + 1 will still likely use it;
    }
    }
    }
    }
i'm in the "create a project" part - i think i have a permissions issue, i had one yesterday, but don't know how to fix it and what it does
so :
it says Run npm init --scope=<username>, and replace <username> with the user
you created in the last lesson. This will create a package.json file.
so i run npm init --scope=fongor
it answers with name: (@fongor/node2603)
hnry
@hnry
Mar 26 2016 08:05
@fongor are they local modules?
@fongor or are they published modules?
@fongor is the "link" phrase what the tutorial is using? then you want to look at npm link for working with local modules
fongor
@fongor
Mar 26 2016 08:06
@hnry i guess it was basically a published module, as i had to install it from the tuto's light version of npm (i guess it's a sort of fake online npm), but it's now locally present on my machine inside the node_modules dir
@hnry no the tuto is not using the link word, it's mine
the tuto is just telling me about an error because their @linclark module is extraneous
so i want to now tell the package.json that it has @linclark/pkg as a dependency
not only for the tuto but because then i know how to do it
Mar 26 2016 08:10
@hnry oooh you mean that this command has to use only 1 module name, the one that i want to add as a dependency, and the syntax itself does mean "install as a dependency of package.json " ?
i didn't get this, i was thinking it would just install it inside the app so i didn't try it yet - hold on a sec
hnry
@hnry
Mar 26 2016 08:11
@fongor yes, but it is more appropriate to think of it as install as a dependency of the current folder (where the package.json is)
so you see an error extraneous because you installed it to the current folder, but it's not in package.json (so it is extraneous, meaning extra)
sometimes this is ok though because you can install modules and they don't always have to be dependencies
yes it works but I wanted to use the properties of the <body> and override other properties.Is it possible
fongor
@fongor
Mar 26 2016 08:36
@UtkarshShukla7 i guess it is, but if you want so you need to have no style inside your div tags or h1 tags otherwide your inline properties (inside < >) will override everyone
(otherwiSe)
@UtkarshShukla7 is it answering your question ?
UtkarshShukla7
@UtkarshShukla7
Mar 26 2016 08:38
@fongor yes,but besides it is any other way by keeping div styles and not adding new styles to turn it green
fongor
@fongor
Mar 26 2016 08:40
@UtkarshShukla7 i'm sorry what is your question exactly? you want to leave your inline styles inside the < >, but still, having a higher priority instruction inside your css stylesheet ?
UtkarshShukla7
@UtkarshShukla7
Mar 26 2016 08:42
yes ,I just wanted to somehow use the styles of body in the div inspite of having a higher priority instruction inside my css stylesheet by using important.Is it not allowed.
fongor
@fongor
Mar 26 2016 08:44
yeah, actually you simply can not have an instruction inside your stylesheet (CSS file) that will be higher priority than inline style. Inline style (inside your HTML file, inside the < blahblah blah, style="…">) always wins
so if you want to play around with !important, you just need to avoid any inline style, and then you can play with body style versus h1 style
know what i mean ?
@ChillyGaz I guess in this challenge you were asked to change font size of all paragraphs, so you have to create rule for paragraphs, not class:
p {
  font-size: 16px;
}
in such way you don't have to assign any class to paragraph.
@lawrenceagles be sure to put space between every word in your sentence
You don't have space between "and it" and myVerb parameter.
Hey guys, I think I found a mistake in the explanation/example code of the Javascript section "Multiple Identical Options in Switch Statements"
switch(val) {
case 3:
break;
case 4:
result = "4 alone";
}
@YngwieJ You mean last case does not have a break or what do you think is mistake ?
YngwieJ
Shouldn't this say 'return "1, 2, or 3";' instead of result...
because when I type result it gives me an error
notMichael
@notMichael
Mar 26 2016 10:29
@YngwieJ It is not necessary it can but if you want to do something else after switch with result you can store it first to result and then do something before return
@YngwieJ Do not forget to return that result value before function ends !
YngwieJ
@YngwieJ
notMichael
thats putting white space above the navbar for me
Kevin
@KevinBruland
Mar 26 2016 11:30
you will see part of the background image is being covered by the navbar... because the navbar is on top of the background image
I want the navbar to not cover any part of div1, the background in the about me section
as though it's content above div1, not on top of
YngwieJ
@YngwieJ
Mar 26 2016 11:32
hmm. I was trying if (a < 0|| b < 0);
return undefined;
oops
if (a < 0|| b < 0);
return undefined;
this was what I wrote, but it doesn't work
but yours does. why?
that is someone asking the same question, and getting an answer about using padding, @itsCodingTime
notMichael
@notMichael
Mar 26 2016 11:33
@YngwieJ Because of that semicolon. If you put semicolon after if you ended if and next line wont be conditional
Kevin
@KevinBruland
Mar 26 2016 11:34
but when I try to do that, I am getting white space above the navbar instead of pushing the content down... creating white space behind the navbar
@YngwieJ it is good practise to use if like that: If(condition){conditional code first line; conditional code second line;}
YngwieJ
@YngwieJ
Mar 26 2016 11:37
so, I'm a bit confused on what this code even means. It's saying if a and b are less than 0 it will return undefined. Otherwise, it goes to return Math.round(Math.pow(Math.sqrt(a) + Math.sqrt(b), 2));?
Lucas Reis
@lucas-t-reis
Mar 26 2016 11:40
@Benalron Well
@Benalron Think I got something, hold on
@Benalron Instead of "navbar-fixed-top" use "navbar-static-top". But that's half a solution as the page does get a white space too.
notMichael
@notMichael
Mar 26 2016 11:43
@YngwieJ You do not have to bother about that right now, but anyway that code do this (squaredA + squaredB)^2 and then it is rounded. It is basically pythagorean theorem and then rounded. Nothing more than that. And the condition you was making was there because you cannot square negative number.
Kevin
@KevinBruland
Mar 26 2016 11:58
thats what I have, but the navbar is still layered on top
to see what I mean, you can delete background-attachment: fixed; from #div1 in the CSS
after reading more, I do not think there is currently a solution to this... I think the way navbar functions at its core is being on top of the content... and the way background-attachment:fixed; functions is taking up the entire viewport
I appreciate all the effort you have put in to try and help
1) why have the social media buttons stopped working properly? The text is turning blue despite having " text-decoration: none;" in the css (.btn-main)
2) how do i stop the images going over the nav bar when you scroll up and down?
Shaklin
@ShaklinSyed
Mar 26 2016 12:53
@jamesbcn since we hover on the .btn-main you need to give text-decoration : none and color to the text for .btn-main:hover that would fix the first issue
jamesbcn
@jamesbcn
Mar 26 2016 12:54
@ShaklinSyed but i have already done "text-decoration: none;" in the .btn-main
it was working fine until i did the portfolio page...
Shaklin
@ShaklinSyed
Mar 26 2016 12:57
so let me put it this way, .btn-main class get applied at zero state(like no hover or anything), and by default when we hover anchor tag gets css properties such as underline and colour, so when we overide with .btn-main:hover class we can apply the styles we want
@levlas One of the images you are using in your cols (the calendar image) has a height that is 1 pixel larger than the others so your fourth image catches on it instead of floating all the way to the left. You can either make all the images the exact same size, or you can put each group of 3 images into a separate row container.
@iamharshit You need to put document between parenthesis in your first line of code, and add a # before myButton so that JS knows that it's an id that it is looking for.
The # goes in your js selector on your second line of code by the way
Your left-well element should have a red background.
You should use the .parent() function to modify this element.
The .parent() method should be called on the #target1 element.
Only use jQuery to add these classes to the element.
<script>
  $(document).ready(function() {
    $("#left-well").parent().css("background-color","red");
    $("#target1").css("color","red");
    $("#target1").prop("disabled", true);
    $("#target4").remove();
    $("#target2").appendTo("#right-well");
    $("#target5").clone().appendTo("#left-well");
  });
</script>
is this the right way?
very few products get deployed with bootstrap
also companies are trying to move past jquery cause they see better technologies
perhaps bootstrap components are used but the css is overwritten
but raw bootstrap? nah
I'd like pushback on this
Hello! I need some help with the "Factorialize a Number" problem..
Return the factorial of the provided integer.
If the integer is represented with the letter n, a factorial is the product of all positive integers less than or equal to n.
Factorials are often represented with the shorthand notation n!
For example: 5! = 1 2 3 4 5 = 120
Here's my code.. which totally works but it doesn't get approved..why is that? thanks!
var value = 1;
function factorialize(num) {
for (var x = num; x > 0; x--){
value *= x;
}
num = value;
return num;
}
factorialize(10);
I was not using the type for other buttons for eg., like, delete etc
so I thought it can be removed here as well
what I cant understand is why in submit button alone we need the type submit while not in other buttons
