Can anyone explain why I'm not getting anything in my array from this code snippet?

  while (j < users.length) {
    $.getJSON(cUrls[j], function(json) {
      channels.push(new Channel(json.display_name, json.url, json.logo, json.desc));
    });
  }
  console.log(channels.length);

I'm trying to iterate through an array of urls to $.getJSON. Will this not work?

General question. in cases where you set the background to cover the full page using css, I have issues. When the browser is shrunk small height-wise...the background doesn't extend down through the my content that i have to scroll to see. How do I set it so that my background fills the screen OR if my content doesn't fit on the screen then it fills my content at least?

My answer works in my local browser with local files and when I click "run tests" I get the same answers as in the requirements but I get no green check mark love. The only green checkmark I get is "factorialize(5) should return a number". Even though that number is 120, I don't even get a checkmark for "factorialize(5) should return 120"

@daemedeor which line you mean?
Justin
@daemedeor
Mar 27 2016 01:45
@UmutAlihan on line 7, you have initialized ints but you need to pass in pointers to int
so it should look like

int * t0, t1;

t0 = 0;
t1=0;

Ali
@UmutAlihan

Manish Giri
@Manish-Giri
Mar 27 2016 01:50
@UmutAlihan in C, if your functions are defined after you call them, you have to declare the prototype before they are called
Justin

Mar 27 2016 01:51
@Manish-Giri oh yea i forgot c doesn't hoist

you should define your struct outside of the function and htne reference the struct property and then return that... and your function signature is still returning an int and not a struct
so.... there's that
oh make an instance of your struct
sorry XD

how do I do this? Give your div element the class gray-background.
Your div element should have a gray background.

<link href="https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Lobster" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">

<style>
.red-text {
color: red;
}

h2 {
font-family: Lobster, Monospace;
}

p {
font-size: 16px;
font-family: Monospace;
}

.thick-green-border {
border-color: green;
border-width: 10px;
border-style: solid;
border-radius: 50%;
}

.smaller-image {
width: 100px;
}
</style>

<h2 class="red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>

<p>Click here for <a href="#">cat photos</a>.</p>

<a href="#"><img class="smaller-image thick-green-border" alt="A cute orange cat lying on its back" src="https://bit.ly/fcc-relaxing-cat"></a>

<div>
<p>Things cats love:</p>
<ul>

<p>Top 3 things cats hate:</p>
<ol>
<li>flea treatment</li>
<li>thunder</li>
<li>other cats</li>

Hey folks! I'm a bit stuck.
For this task: "Set remainder equal to the remainder of 11 divided by 3 using the remainder (%) operator." the code I am given is

var remainder;

Am I supposed to add the equation to it, under it, or in place of it? This task doesn't make as much sense to me (no clear example given.)

Hey guys, my code is crashing. This code is freezing my page, I can't figure out where the error is, any advice? The goal is to find the roman numeral of the number given:
function romanNumeral(n) {
    var numConversion = {
        1000: "M",
        900 : "CM",
        500 : "D",
        400 : "CD",
        100 : "C",
        90 : "XC",
        50 : "L",
        40 : "XL",
        10 : "X",
        9 : "IX",
        5 : "V",
        4 : "IV",
        1 : "I",
    }

    var result = "";

    function recurse(thisNum) {
        for(var num in numConversion) {
            if(thisNum === 0) { // base case
                return result;
            }else if(thisNum >= num) { // if 1012 >= 1000 true
                result += numConversion[num]; // result="M"
                recurse(thisNum - num); // 1012 - 1000 = 12
            }
        }

    }

    recurse(n);

    return result;
}

console.log(romanNumeral(900)); // CM
console.log(romanNumeral(843)); // DCCCXLIII
console.log(romanNumeral(12)) // XII
console.log(romanNumeral(493)) // CDXCIII

@maulikdarji By num do you mean the key in the object numConversion?
Maulik Darji

Mar 27 2016 06:06
@Mashadim thisNum; The argument to recurse function
hnry
@hnry
Mar 27 2016 06:07
@Mashadim i don't even think this will work out well if you manage to fix the overlooping
like you would have to write more and more special cases in numConversion to match everything in the challenge test
@Mashadim actually it might be ok, but what you want is to break; after recurse(thisNum - num);
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Mar 27 2016 06:11
like what else? @hnry I think its ok
i just don't see why do recursion at all, although im not able to find out exactly what the problem is
Mariya
@mariyadiminsky
Mar 27 2016 06:13
@hnry @coymeetsworld I need recursion so that as the number gets smaller it can still access the keys before it. But I just realized that the real problem is that you cant use numbers as keys, it automatically converts to strings. I will try to fix this and update. Thank you.

hnry
@hnry
Mar 27 2016 06:18
@Mashadim i think you have the right idea with the object lookup, but you don't need to double loop with the for loop and the recursion
@Mashadim in roman numerals you only need to know the unique letters that represent a number right? so X, V, I, D, M etc. so you only need these to represent any number
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Mar 27 2016 06:19
@Mashadim i use one while loop
i iterate until the number goes to 0
i just use if/else statements to determine if the number is within a range
if it is i put the appropriate roman numeral on the string and subtract the value from the number
Mariya
@mariyadiminsky
Mar 27 2016 06:21
@hnry -_- no you definitely need more than that, roman numerals are tricker than this.
@coymeetsworld that's a good idea, but how do you access numbers before it? Like if you need to use 100 3 times?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Mar 27 2016 06:22
so if the number is 300
hnry
@hnry
Mar 27 2016 06:22
@Mashadim no you just need the unique set of letters and you can represent any number, so given so number like 95231 they all only take x, v, i, d, m etc to make it
@Mashadim if you break apart 95231, to be 9, 5, 2, 3, 1 and i told you to convert it to roman numerals you can, all you are missing is if its in the tens, hundreds, thousands place etc.
@Mashadim do you get where i am going with this?
Mariya
@mariyadiminsky
Mar 27 2016 06:23
@hnry there are also weird subtractions things that happen when a number is close to a special chaarcter number like 4 and 5 , 400, 500 etc.
@coymeetsworld yes
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Mar 27 2016 06:24
sorry
hnry
@hnry
Mar 27 2016 06:24
@Mashadim a 9 and a 4 is always the same structure, you dont need to rewrite how you write a 9 and a 4
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Mar 27 2016 06:24
so you check the largest numbers first
hnry
@hnry
Mar 27 2016 06:24
all you need is the place
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Mar 27 2016 06:24
300 is not greater than 1000 so you don't put an M, not >500 you don't put a D, but it is greater than 100 (C)
so put a C in your string, subtract 100
then you go back to the loop again (200 > 0)
do the same thing you add another C, subtract 100
again, another C, subtract 100, now the value is 0 so you exit the loop
so you have CCC
hnry
@hnry
Mar 27 2016 06:26
@coymeetsworld thats too complicated because you're starting to write special conditions
generalize the entire process so you write any roman number
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Mar 27 2016 06:27
what special conditions?
hnry
@hnry
Mar 27 2016 06:27
you're testing against specific values
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Mar 27 2016 06:28
right?
hnry
@hnry
Mar 27 2016 06:28
all you need to know how to write is 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 in roman numerals and then you can write any number
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Mar 27 2016 06:28
um, no?
hnry
@hnry
Mar 27 2016 06:28
you don't need to check if 300 is greater than 1000 or less than 4
yes just like in our modern number system, given 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0 i can write any number right?
the same applies if we convert it to roman numerals
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Mar 27 2016 06:29
im not following
for example how do you write 10?
hnry
@hnry
Mar 27 2016 06:29
you're using 1 and 0
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Mar 27 2016 06:30
wait bad example, lol, how do you write 50?
hnry
@hnry
Mar 27 2016 06:30
you're just using 5 and 0,
so as long as you know how to present 1-9 and 0, then you can write any number
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Mar 27 2016 06:30
still don't get how
you know 50 is L right?
hnry
@hnry
Mar 27 2016 06:31

Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Mar 27 2016 06:31
so how do I get L when I'm only referring from numbers 1-9 and 0?

@hnry Theres no 0 in roman i think
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Mar 27 2016 06:31
yeah also theres no zero
hnry
@hnry
Mar 27 2016 06:31
like i said the only thing you need to know is how to write 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and the place of the number (tens, hundreds etc.) and you can write any number
yes i know that, that's why i separate the 0
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
Mar 27 2016 06:32
still don't know how you get L to print with just numbers 1-9
i get theres a 5 in the 10s place and a 0 in the ones, now what?

@hnry its better not to say something if you are not absolutely sure, you end up confusing others rather than genuinely helping them, and from what I understand you want to help others right. L clearly will not give you 50 if you only know numbers from 1-9, that is impossible...
hnry
@hnry
Mar 27 2016 06:41
@Mashadim i will show you the example...
@Mashadim check your messages, and i am not trying to confuse people, but people refuse to give me a chance to explain first i think so they automatically assume i'm trying to confuse people
and i was trying to get people to think outside of the box and not calculate things, and think about numerical systems at a fundamental level
all numerical systems is, is a set of characters that represent a place (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0) and if it's in the tens, hundreths, thousands place etc.
Coy Sanders

Mar 27 2016 06:43
yeah i saw what @hnry did @Mashadim, he pretty much explained it best you could w/o actually showing the work
hnry

so you can avoid doing math calculations
Maulik Darji
@maulikdarji
Mar 27 2016 06:45
@hnry You had the right concept but with wrong idea, because roman numarals are not based on 1-9, its based on 1,5,10,50,100,500 and 1000
hnry
@hnry
Mar 27 2016 06:45
@maulikdarji it's still a numerical system
Mariya

Mar 27 2016 06:46
@Mashadim ok i did it privately because i wasn't sure and i don't like giving answers directly in the chat but here is what i did
function convert(num) {
  var romanMap = {
    1: 'I', 5: 'V', 10: 'X', 50: 'L', 100: 'C', 500: 'D', 1000: 'M'
  };

  return num.toString().split("").reverse().reduce(function(r, n, i) {
    var pow = Math.pow(10, i);
    switch(n) {
      case "1":
        return r + romanMap[1 * pow];
      case "2":
        return r + romanMap[1 * pow].repeat(2);
      case "3":
        return r + romanMap[1 * pow].repeat(3);
      case "4":
        return r + romanMap[5 * pow] + romanMap[1 * pow];
      case "5":
        return r + romanMap[5 * pow];
      case "6":
        return r + romanMap[1 * pow] + romanMap[5 * pow];
      case "7":
        return r + romanMap[1 * pow].repeat(2) + romanMap[5 * pow];
      case "8":
        return r + romanMap[1 * pow].repeat(3) + romanMap[5 * pow];
      case "9":
        return r + romanMap[10 * pow] + romanMap[1 * pow];
      default: // case 0, ignore
        return r;
    }
 }, "").split("").reverse().join("");
}
you see there is no math calculations, only unique roman numerals, and i just say how to write 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9
and it will handle 913, or 5, or 71 etc. anything
Mariya
@mariyadiminsky
Mar 27 2016 06:49
@hnry That's pretty cool and a creative way to solve the problem. This seems even more complicated than recursion to me though. Btw I didnt get your private message and I see you did add letters like L and M, interesting. Thank you for all your advice.

Mar 27 2016 06:49
@Mashadim yes unique letters, to me it's much simpler, since its very explicit and clear how the transformations happen
since you don't have to think through loop of loops and if conditions etc.
Mariya
@mariyadiminsky
Mar 27 2016 06:51
But switch cases are really similar to if statements, in their purpose lol
hnry
@hnry
Mar 27 2016 06:51
@Mashadim it depends on the condition
and switch cases are more explicit
since you can only test for specific conditions

      $.getJSON(url, function(json) {
      $(".message").html(JSON.stringify(json));
      });

somehow this thing is not working but if we directly type the url : https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&titles=Hawking&prop=revisions&rvprop=content&format=json
then it works

CamperBot
@camperbot
Mar 27 2016 07:57

:point_right: algorithm seek and destroy [wiki]

Explanation:

This problem is a bit tricky because you have to familiarize yourself with Arguments, as you will have to work with two or more but on the script you only see two. Many people hardcode this program for three arguments. You will remove any number from the first argument that is the same as any other other arguments.

:pencil: read more about algorithm seek and destroy on the FCC Wiki

return ret;
}
function filterElement(value) {

Mar 27 2016 09:10
I want the box with the text to be the same size
the only reason boxes 3-6 look the same size is because they have a img that is the same size as the first image
I am trying to fix it so it is instead a background image, and the box itself is forced to be the same size
I put row-eq-height in... and then applied the "test" text, to see if the box with the text would be the same size as the 1st box, with a picture of my tribute page

Make sure each of your div elements has a closing tag.

Your h2 element should be red.
Your h2 element should have the class red-text.
Your stylesheet should declare a red-text class and have its color set to red.
Do not use inline style declarations like style="color: red" in your h2 element.

1

<style>
2
.red-text{
3
color:red;

wait i got another problem

Classes are reusable styles that can be added to HTML elements.

Here's an example CSS class declaration:

<style>
.blue-text {
color: blue;
}
</style>
You can see that we've created a CSS class called blue-text within the <style> tag.

You can apply a class to an HTML element like this:

<h2 class="blue-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>

Note that in your CSS style element, classes should start with a period. In your HTML elements' class declarations, classes shouldn't start with a period.

Inside your style element, change the h2 selector to .red-text and update the color's value from blue to red.

Give your h2 element the class attribute with a value of 'red-text'.

how to do that

@paulcarroty Thanks man.
The way way I solved it was to go to cloud9 Account settings page, click on the SSH Keys, copy the key, go to my github account settings, click on the SSH Keys, press New SSH Key button and paste the code there. Then I typed 'ssh -vT git@github.com' in the cloud9 terminal to verify that there is a connection with github and everything was ok. Then 'git push origin master' command worked.

@pmdenlinger All string methods return a new string, that you must assign somewhere. Changing string content is not possible.
Paul Denlinger
@pmdenlinger
Mar 27 2016 14:20
@Masd925 Yes, but by re-assigning the contents of myStr to "Hello World" I am changing the contents of the whole variable. The lesson says that I cannot change a single element or character, but I can re-assign a new string. So I assigned "Hello World" to replace "Jello World"

@pmdenlinger Strings only let you read index values, you cannot write to them; hence the immutability of a string. Does that make sense? So instead of replacing the index of [0] with "H" you must replace the full string.
