ok, i'm sorry what is the question?
parsing results or displaying list?
oh, or just doing the search?

@max77p
May 01 2016 00:01
right now i am just testing on console.log..so right now with the current code i get 10 queries with the search. But i need to also ouput the pageid of each search
but i can't seem to figure out how to get it to output the pageid in the object
Sean DiSanti

isn't the title the page id?

newbie here- need some help- can't see what the heck I am doing wrong: trying to nest radio buttons within a row element...
<div class="row">
<div class="col-xs-6"> <button class="btn btn-block btn-primary"><i class="fa fa-thumbs-up"></i> Like</button>
</div>
<div class="col-xs-6"><button class="btn btn-block btn-info"><i class="fa fa-info-circle"></i> Info</button>

radio buttons are a type of <input> tag.

Also, dont forget that sometimes the exercise code is a little nonresponsive (for a bit). Try again, modify something / move it, read the comments, and try / wait a sec / try. Shouldn't take too long.

it looks like when you use a generator, you don't need the pageid, the generator must be given a list of pages, and it uses the titles in place of titles, pageids, or revids
max77p
@max77p
May 01 2016 00:09
@badc0ded yea, so i am already getting a list of pages with my initial api
how can i pass that info into the generator?
well thats my thinking of how it should work..maybe i am wrong
Sean DiSanti

<script>

$(document).ready(function() {

$("h1").addClass("animated fadeOut");

});

</script>
why isnt this working?
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 01 2016 00:20
@max77p it looks like the generator is used to avoid multiple calls
like instead of doing your search and then doing a call for each result, you would use the search as the generator and have the api return what you want from each of the results
yeah i don't think the generator is what you want
you're already getting list of search results
max77p
@max77p
May 01 2016 00:24
@badc0ded the wiki is so confusion
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 01 2016 00:25
just parse those and throw them on the page
right?
max77p
@max77p
May 01 2016 00:25
the search is correct, because it produces exactly the same result as the sample page given by freecodecamp
but i can't seem to get the pageid going
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 01 2016 00:25
you don't need the pageid
max77p
@max77p
May 01 2016 00:25
@badc0ded what you mean parse those?
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 01 2016 00:25
you can use the title for the pageid
max77p
@max77p
May 01 2016 00:25
@badc0ded just put the title in?
ahh
yea true
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 01 2016 00:26
parse like, here's the list returned:
or two of them at least
nevermind it's not copying and pasting
anyway
you have json results
an array of objects
you could do something like....
max77p
@max77p
May 01 2016 00:30
yea title works i just throw it at end of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ on user click
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 01 2016 00:30
sorry, started actually doing it for you
in editor, i know that's not what i was supposed to do, lol
parsing is just taking the object and making it into readable content
i was just writing a function that could be called like...
x.query.search.forEach(generateMarkup)
max77p
@max77p
May 01 2016 00:31
@badc0ded haha yea i know how to do that lol
but thanks
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 01 2016 00:32
no problem, i sometimes find it easier to do than to explain, and that's not the best help obviously
you're pretty much there
just use the title instead of page id in your links
max77p
@max77p
May 01 2016 00:32
@badc0ded making good progress, i find in these projects its getting the api working proplery is the hard part for me lol
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 01 2016 00:32
it does say in the api documentation also that pages can be accessed with title, pageid, or revid
max77p
@max77p
May 01 2016 00:32
then after that its putting it all together..kind of like getting the engine working first then putting the body together
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 01 2016 00:33
yeah, it's always just a matter of breaking it into small enough pieces
max77p

Jacob J
@DiginessForever
May 01 2016 00:35
Yeah, unless you know what functions do what, sometimes it's really hard to understand an API. I've given up on a few.
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 01 2016 00:36
yeah, the worst is when you don't have the domain knowledge associated with the project either
like i have had to do a LOT with hydrology and mapping in the last few years
and don't know EITHER
lol
so it is very daunting to try to make sense of documentation
and real life calls again, back in a bit
Jacob J
@DiginessForever
May 01 2016 00:37
Yeah. Documentation is really important for an API. Otherwise, the best you can do is go start learning a lot more about the domain.

what is the text markup to place code in chat?
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 01 2016 01:01
yeah, it's fun to do stuff as a one liner for added challenge on the these sometimes, but in the real world you'll probably end up avoiding that in favor of readability

arrow functions are another way of writing functions. so rather than writing .filter(function(a, b) { ... }); you can write .filter((a, b) => { ... }); and it's shorter in a lot of cases
let is block-scoped, rather than function-scoped like var, so you can declare variables that are local to if/else statements and can't be used outside
const variables can't be changed
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 01 2016 01:09

So the problem is I have what I want but can't figure out how to include two bits of crucial information into the design.
Grabbing it from PS

So, my tribute concept is Women who Code. I'm featuring four women who were coders circa 1940's.
Vishesh Dembla

May 01 2016 02:20
Elaborate what is the crucial information you want to include
Kira Washington
@justcallmekat
May 01 2016 02:21
So, the design issue is that I want to include a quote from each woman coder and three stats, i.e. first to....
When a person clicks on the square, that woman's picture will show up, their quote, and their stat..
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 01 2016 02:22
ok, you'll just want to use javascript for that then
Vishesh Dembla
@vishesh-dembla
May 01 2016 02:22
Yes
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 01 2016 02:22
if you wanted it on hover you could even do it with css
that would be easiest if you don't want to mess with javascript or jquery yet
Kira Washington

well I guess it depends
Santiago Morán

.box {
    border-style: solid;

    background-color: #F2F2F2;
    padding: 0px;
    margin: 100px;
    border-radius: 5px

  }

 .boxline {
    border-style: solid;
    border-color: #F2F2F2;
    border-width: 1px;
    background-color: #F2F2F2;
    padding: 0px;
    margin: 100px;
    border-radius: 5px
I'll try using the 4 margins
Daniel Hsing
@Arthelon
May 01 2016 03:05
@SERJH yeah the margin property applies it to all 4 sides
Dylan
@dhcodes
May 01 2016 03:06
@SERJH after your margin on .box, try margin-bottom: 20px;
so leave the margin you have and just add that line
beneath it
or combine them by doing margin: 100px 100px 20px 100px;

Check Radio Buttons and Checkboxes by Default
You can set a checkbox or radio button to be checked by default using the checked attribute.

To do this, just add the word "checked" to the inside of an input element. For example:

<input type="radio" name="test-name" checked>

Set the first of your radio buttons and the first of your checkboxes to both be checked by default.

Run tests (ctrl + enter)

<link href="https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Lobster" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">

<style>
.red-text {
color: red;
}

h2 {
font-family: Lobster, Monospace;
}

p {
font-size: 16px;
font-family: Monospace;
}

.thick-green-border {
border-color: green;
border-width: 10px;
border-style: solid;
border-radius: 50%;
}

.smaller-image {
width: 100px;
}
</style>

<h2 class="red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>

<label><input type="checkbox" name="personality"> Energetic</label>

Your first radio button on your form should be checked by default.

so the radio button :radio_button: or checkbox looks like its already clicked
and you do that by putting checked at the end of the <input> tag, like they did in the example: <input type="radio" name="test-name" checked>

function myReplace(str, before, after) {

  var newStr = str.replace(before,after);

@coymeetsworld
May 01 2016 09:23
sure what's up?
Lian
@CosineroLian
May 01 2016 09:24
it says that "Only add one class with each of your three selectors. "Here's my code $("button").addClass("animated ");
$(".btn").addClass("animated ");
$("#target1").addClass("animated shake btn-primary");
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 01 2016 09:25
so yes you only add one class to each of those selectors, add animated to one, shake to another, btn-primary to the last
the idea is that this button
        <button class="btn btn-default target" id="target1">#target1</button>
will have all 3 of those classes

$("#target2").appendTo("#right-well");
$("#target5").clone().appendTo("#left-well");
$("#left-well").parent().css("background-color", "red");
$("#target1").parent();
});
</script>
Your left-well element should have a red background.
You should use the .parent() function to modify this element.
The .parent() method should be called on the #target1 element.
Only use jQuery to add these classes to the element.
but , ( Your left-well element should have a red background. ) not yet fix

@RipperClown look at these two lines:

$("#left-well").parent().css("background-color", "red");
$("#target1").parent();

in first line you are looking for parent of #left-well but you should put background of #left-well as red color

@RipperClown your second well using parent() is selecting well:

$("#target1").parent();

so use that second line to set background color to red using css() as in first line.

Hi, I can't seem to figure out why the second <ul> has an indentation.

<h2 class='text-left'>Career</h2>
<ul>
<li>Kaunda helped establish the African National Congress (ANC), the first key anti-colonial establishment organization in Northern Rhodesia. He served under ANC president Harry Nkumbula, from 1953-1958 as the group’s secretary general.</li>
<li>In 1958, he became disenchanted with Nkumbula's policies and left the African National Congress to establish the Zambia African National Union. His party was banned in 1959 after upsurge in civil disobedience. This resulted in Kaunda spending nine months in jail.</li>
<li>After he was released in 1960, he became the president of the new United National Independence Party (UNIP). Two years later, he was elected to the Legislative Council.</li>
<li>In 1960, he visited Martin Luther King Jr. in Atlanta, Georgia. Inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr., he went on to establish a civil disobedience campaign, known as the Cha-cha-cha campaign. The participants in this campaign engaged in arson and blocking major roadways.</li>
<li>In October 1964, Zambia won its independence and Kaunda became the first president.</li>
<li>His charisma and intolerance for dissent helped him to remain in power but slowly and gradually, it turned out to be his downfall.</li>
<li>In 1991, under pressure to create multiparty politics, he stepped down from the presidency. Movement for Multiparty Democracy won the election with Frederick Chiluba as president.</li>
<li>He retired from politics after being accused of being involved in a failed coup attempt in 1997.</li>

<h2 class='text-left'>Major Works </h2>
<ul>
<li>To improve the education levels in his country, Kaunda implemented a policy that provided children with free school supplies such as pens, pencils and exercise books. Children were given these supplies regardless of their parents’ financial situation.
</li>
<li>In 1966, the University of Zambia was opened and Kaunda appointed its Chancellor. He was also invited (and accepted) to officiate the first graduation ceremony in 1969.
</li>
<li>In 1968, he introduced the Mulungushi Reforms, in which he planned to acquire major shares in foreign-owned firms in order to boost the economy. He managed to acquire shares in the Anglo American Corporation and the Rhodesia Selection Trust, consolidated the two companies, and called the new company Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines (NCCM).
</li>
<li>In 1983, NCCM and Roan Consolidated Mines merged and became the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd (ZCCM).</li>
<li>In 1964, during the Lumpa Crisis, Kaunda banned the Lumpa Church, creating animosity among the church and the UNIP. Kaunda was never able to fully mitigate the animosity.
</li>
<li>After his retirement from politics, Kaunda has worked towards fighting HIV/AIDS.
</li>
</ul>

@yahmedjee you haven't closed your unordered list, that's why second list belongs to first list, you have nested unordered lists in your code.
@RipperClown first line: $("#left-well").parent(); is doing nothing, it selects parent of item and don't do anything with that information, you can remove that line.

Write a function which takes an id, a property (prop), and a value.

For the given id in collection:

If value is non-blank (value !== "") and prop is not "tracks" then update or set the value for the prop.

If the prop is "tracks" and value is non-blank, push the value onto the end of the tracks array.

If value is blank, delete that prop

Hi ! I have a question concerning the "Friendly Dates Challenge" (https://www.freecodecamp.com/challenges/friendly-date-ranges)
Why makeFriendlyDates(["2016-12-01", "2018-02-03"]) should return ["December 1st, 2016","February 3rd, 2018"] and not ["December 1st","February 3rd, 2018"]?
sorry, my bad :)
"Additionally, if the date range begins in the current year and ends within one year, the year should not be displayed at the beginning of the friendly range."

May 01 2016 12:00
@hasacz I'm not completely sure, but maybe you've misread what you need to do?
So instead of
<div class="col-xs-6 well">

</div>
you need to do
<div class="col-xs-6>
<div class="well"></div>
</div>
?
'i have to nest div element with the class well within each of my col-xs-6 div elements'
suggests to me that you need to create a new div inside your columns, not append a class to your columns

Give your form element the id of cat-photo-form.
Your form element should have the background-color of green.
Make sure your form element has an id attribute.
Do not give your form any class or style attributes.
how do i set the background without giving a form a class or style?

@acr187 In my experience, when you have the basics of a language down, learning the methods just comes with time as you need to use them. A lot of methods you may never use. It's best to just look at API docs when you need to, or learn from examples on sites like stackoverflow when you have a problem.

okie thanks
youarenotreal
@youarenotreal
May 01 2016 12:30
how do you turn off the green notifications?
they're really in the way
I cheated the test by simply adding some random properties to the Person class, I don't know if it was meant to be done this way , the questions on FCC sometimes are confusing
youarenotreal
@youarenotreal
May 01 2016 12:36
I was just doing that too
it's looking for object.keys.length which notes how many properties an object has
it's a bit of a weird thing to ask of you when you only need to know the first and last name

I just put this:

var Person = function(firstAndLast) {
    this.firstName = 0;
    this.lastName = 1;
    this.property1 = 2;
    this.property2 = 3;
    this.property3 = 4;
    this.property4 = 5;
    return firstAndLast;
};

To give it 6 properties

Manuel Tancoigne
@mtancoigne
May 01 2016 12:45
Cheatign to get the test works doesn't help you to understand :)
But the instructions are clear :

```Fill in the object constructor with the following methods below:
getFirstName()
getLastName()
getFullName()
setFirstName(first)
setLastName(last)
setFullName(firstAndLast)
Run the tests to see the expected output for each method.
sorry for my copy/paste
so your Person object should have those six methods
:point_right: algorithm make a person [wiki]
Explanation:
When I started the program I figured I just had to create the six functions mentioned in the details. However, it was not that simple. Creating them as a function was not the right way, I had to create them in a different way to make them a key.
There is also a tricky part as you need six keys no more or less, so at first I had the variable that store the original name as a key too which was wrong.
As for the usage of array, that is optional, you could also create new variable to hold the separated string if you wish but an array is easier to deal with as strings are immutable.
Read the instructions carefully, it is always a good hint in itself to run the code and check what the test results were so you know what to expect but do not fixate yourself on that. Once you understand what you need to do, this problem is very easy and straightforward.
@Pruthvi-Raj try this:
var Person = function(firstAndLast) {
 var first;
 var last;
};
Person.prototype.getFullName = function() {
  return this.first + " " + this.last;
};
Person.prototype.getLastName = function() {
  return this.last;
};
Person.prototype.getFirstName = function() {
  return this.first;
};
Person.prototype.setFullName = function(firstAndLast) {
   var arr = firstAndLast.split(" ");
  first = arr[0];
  last = arr[1];
};
Person.prototype.setLastName = function(last) {
  last = last;
};
Person.prototype.setFirstName = function(first) {
  first = first;
};
var bob = new Person('Bob Ross');
So any object in javascript is a key value pair, when you do 'this.property1' in the constructor function, you create a key, and when you do 'this.property1 = value', you give the property key a value.
if you have the cash to spare
it is amazing
goes super in depth into how javascript objects work, prototypes, how they all relate to each other etc
theres a segment which analyses jquery
and a segment where you create a framework
Hey guys I this situation: My code works. But why does my code work?
I asked for a solution on stackoverflow and it works now for my random quote machine, however I don't fully understand the code
var url = "http://api.forismatic.com/api/1.0/?method=getQuote&key=457653&format=jsonp&lang=en&jsonp=?";
var getQuote = function(data) {
  $("#Quote_Content").text(data.quoteText);
  $("#Quote_Author").text('Author: ' + data.quoteAuthor);
};
$(document).ready(function() {
  $.getJSON(url, getQuote, 'jsonp');
});
$("#Quote_Button").on('click', function() {
  $.getJSON(url, getQuote, 'jsonp');
});
I don't understand what the 'data'-variable in the var getQuote function receives or what's the value it retunrs can someone explain that to me pls
@MLK97 Ah the timely question ... it works but why does it work? The way I got to understand it is to open the console and examine what is happening every time I made the API call. Then I was able to see the various sections of the data returned by forismatic. The data variable as far as I can explain it refers to a key that is contained within the data returned. Hope that makes some sense.
Although it is possible to add multiple classes in a single .addClass() call, let's add them to the same element in three different ways.
Using each of the above jQuery selectors and the addClass() function:
Add the animated class to all elements with type button.
Add the shake class to all the buttons with class .btn.
Add the btn-primary class to the button with id #target1.
need help with this problem
<script>
$(document).ready(function() {
$("button").addclass("animated");
$(".btn").addclass("shake");
$("#target1").addclass("btn-primary");
});
</script>
GET PUT POST and DELETE requests too. When you do an ajax call you're doing one of those requests to an API to manipulate data. So you can GET flickr photos back in JSON format from their REST API using ajax
it'll make sense more when you look into it properly though
ajax is just a way of interfacing with another server's data
which is what you were doing with your getJSON
jQuery makes ajax way easier btw
but it's good to do the pure js way too so you get an idea whats going on behind the scenes
im no expert with ajax and I'm still learning it but i hope that helps people who are just starting
a cool way I was shown to see ajax in action, is to go on google maps and go to the console, right click, log xmlhttprequests and move the map around and see what requests to google's maps REST API get fired
it'll do loads of GET requests for map data
it's ok
its a bit hard to debug that without seeing all your code
