Hello! does anyone have advice for spinal case challenge? I feel like my code is getting really overcomplicated and still isn't working for all cases. Any advice helps!
function spinalCase(str) {
  // "It's such a fine line between stupid, and clever."
  // --David St. Hubbins
  str = str.replace(/\s|_/g, '');
  var arr = str.split('');
  var words = [];
  var start = 0;

  for (var i=0; i<arr.length; i++){
    if (arr[i]==arr[i].toUpperCase()){
       arr[i]=arr[i].toLowerCase();
       words.push(arr.slice(start, i).join(''));
       start = i;
       console.log(start);
     }
  }
  words.push(arr.slice(start).join(''));
  words.shift();

:point_right: algorithm no repeats please [wiki]

Problem Explanation:

  • This task requires us to look at each possible permutation of a string. This is best done using a recursion function. Being able to build a function which collects all permutations of a string is a common interview question, so there is no shortage of tutorials out there on how to do this, in many different code languages.
  • This task can still be daunting even after watching a tutorial. You will want to send each new use of the function 3 inputs: 1. a new string (or character array) that is being built, 2. a position in your new string that's going to be filled next, and 3. an idea of what characters (more specifically positions) from the original string have yet to be used. The pseudo code will look something like this:

    ```
    var str = ???;
    perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far){
    if(current string is finished) {
    print current string;
    }else{
    for(var i = 0; i < str.length; i++) {
    if(str[i] has not been used) {
      put str[i] into the current position;
      mark str[i] as used
      perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far)
      unmark str[i] as used because another branch in the tree for i + 1 will still likely use it;
    }
    }
    }
    }
Hey all, reading through 'eloquent javascript' and just hoping someone can explain this to me.
function multiplier(factor) {
  return function(number) {
    return number * factor;
  };
}
var twice = multiplier(2);
console.log(twice(5));
// → 10
Why does an argument in twice() get taken as the number parameter?
Related to that, why can you not omit an argument in multiplier(), and then pass two arguments to twice()?
.reverse() doesn't change the original array
You need to set a new variable to the reversed array to be able to access the new array after .reverse() returns
Hey, I can't see to call the wikipedia API. I've checked the link for the JSON file and it seems to be what I need but codepen gives me the error "No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource. Origin 'http://s.codepen.io' is therefore not allowed access."
I'm stuck on the add placeholder text to a text field challenge. I have 2 of 3 of the instructions checked of but the last one "The finished input element should have valid syntax" is giving me trouble
here is my code: <input type="text" placeholder="cat photo URL">
What is wrong with the syntax?
May 04 2016 03:03
@kieutrongtu I believe on that step the p element just needs to use the first few words. So <p class="red-text">Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet</p> should do
I can't remember if the second p element is necessary or not on that step
@yungkurt Everything looks fine with the syntax on the input element - check to make sure every element in the rest of the document is syntactically correct. If that all checks out it might be a bug so try doing a hard refresh or resetting the code and trying again
@t3h2mas Let's see what happens when we create a class that makes text pink, then apply it to an element. Will our class override the body element's color: green; CSS property?
Create a CSS class called pink-text that gives an element the color pink.
Give your h1 element the class of pink-text.
} I am not sure what I am doing wrong.
@skilescm i had my helper function embedded in the original function at first and it worked fine, but again, didnt trigger the correct answer response, so i tried to mess around with it and see if it would work in other ways
@jalley3 , I see what you mean with all the outputs being correct.
The only thing that sticks out to me, is when I add all 4 test cases, it concatenates the outputs into one. Maybe they need to be separate outputs for it to trigger a correct answer?
steamrollArray([1, [2], [3, [[4]]]]);
function destroyer(arr) {
  var elemToDestroy = [];
  for (var i = 1; i < arguments.length; i++) {
    elemToDestroy.push(arguments[i]);
  }
  var survived = arguments[0].filter(function(element, index) {
      if (element === elemToDestroy[i]) {
Hi there, is anyone possibly available to assist me with a $.getJSON question?
I am just trying to get ready to do the first intermediate front end development project, but starting with using one of the examples in the lessons, where the cat photo app gets the raw JSON data from free code camp. I can get this to work no problem when doing it in the lesson, but when I try to run that code locally, it does not generate the data that I need. Also when I try to use another public URL to get different data it doesn't work either. I have tried googling, but I haven't been able to figure out what I am doing incorrectly
if I change the URL there to use another public API, no data is received
// Your code below this line
result = "I one had a " + myNoun + "who " + myAdjective + myAdverb;
Daniel O'Mahony
I see what you mean. @SpeedArt hang on
So your getQuote is in the document.ready. But that only fires when you click it. Create a function called getQuote outside of the document ready. the getQuote function should call $("#getQuote").on("click", function(){ var rndQuote = (Math.floor(Math.random() * (jokes.length - 0 + 1) + 0)); $(".quote").html(jokes[rndQuote]); }); and then pass the function into the document ready.
@SpeedArt I had the same problem. Here's the link to my codepen if you want. I always include a lot of comments so I can see what I'm doing. http://codepen.io/danomah/pen/MyYWbo?editors=0010
  var arr = [];
  var sourceKeys = Object.keys(source);
  for (var i = 0; i < collection.length; i++) {
    count = 0;
    for (var j = 0; j < sourceKeys.length; j++) {
      if ( collection[i].hasOwnProperty(sourceKeys[j]) && collection[i][sourceKeys[j]] == source[sourceKeys[j]] ) {
        count += 1;
        if (count == sourceKeys.length) {
          arr.push(collection[i]);
        }
      }
    }
  }
Hello @ShaffiWebdesigner , on the right side of your text window there is a "M" button, click on it for tips on message display, like displaying code.
And the solution to your problem is to add
But i think it will be better if you go back a few exercises, it's really important to understand how to apply style rules. Good luck.
Guys, need your help. Can't understand what I need to do in the job. That's what I need to do. Create a script element making sure it is valid and has a closing tag.
You should add $(document).ready(function() { to the beginning of your script element.
Close your $(document).ready(function() { function with });
Hello, I was supposed to "Make the second child in each of your well elements bounce. You must target the children of element with the target class.
Here's how you would give the third element in each well the bounce class:
$(".target:nth-child(3)").addClass("animated bounce");"
So I wrote the code as: $(".target:nth-child(2)").addClass("animated bounce");
but I'm getting syntax error invalid token
@garibaldi1 you need to add th class in the ones for button and .btn
and as @whilermo said, you need ; at the end of each command
@garibaldi1 the correct code would be:
$(document).ready(function() {
$("button").addClass("animated")
$(".btn").addClass("shake")
$("#target1").addClass("btn-primary")
});
</script>
with the ;s
Hi guys, I am trying to get a fibonnaci code sequence (without the generator) in javascript with the do while loop but I am getting stuck. I need to use the do while loop as it is part of the exercise and currently have this code:
var fbnci = [];
fbnci[0] = 0;
fbnci[1] = 1;
var i = 2;
do {
  //add up the fibonacci sequence
  fbnci[i] = fbnci [i-2] + fbnci[i-1];
  console.log (fbnci[i]);
  i ++;
}while(i < 64);
But for some reason it does not stop below 64 and goes all the way to 6557470319842. Is there a reason why it is ignoring the while part?
Could anyone help me with #190? Here is the task:
Call the processArg function with an argument of 7 and assign its return value to the variable processed. Here’s my code:
var processed = 0;
function processArg(num) {
  return (num + 5) + 2;
}
I’m getting two errors:
1.processed should have a value of 2
2.You should assign processArg to processed
look at number 2
what are you assigning to processed?
a literal int value
instead of a function call
what would you have to call processArg with to have it return a 2?
@jontron if you plug 2 into that function, you tell it to return (2 + 5) + 2
which is 9
but to complete you'll want your code to include a line like this, but with the right number passed as an argument
var processed = processArg(x);
Your p element should have the text "View more " (with a space after it). @OMahonyD
my code:
function factorialize(num) {
  var fact=num;
  for(var i=(num-1);i<=1;i--){
    fact=fact*i;
  }
  return fact;
}
factorialize(5);
when I run this the value returned is the value of fact which I had initialised before the loop. why is that happening even after I alter the value of fact within the loop?
@lnarjul because it is not entering the loop
i>=1 not <=1
just so you know @lnarjul 'thanks' instead of 'thanx' would have gotten @UtkarshShukla7 some points
usually
weird that that sentence didn't
maybe the quotes messed it up
points don't really matter, but just saying
Hello Everyone.. I have an issue with JQuery. I want to use a variable to enter the last child of an ordered list.. How do I assign the last child to the variable?
```
$(document).ready(function() {
    var target = $();
    $target.fadeOut('fast');
});

if you want the last li, you can use the same selector that would return all of them, and then .last()

:point_right: code formatting [wiki]

Multi line Code

```js ⇦ Type 3 backticks and then press [shift + enter ⏎] (type js or html or css)
<paste your code here>,
then press [shift + enter ⏎]
``` ⇦ Type 3 backticks, then press [enter ⏎]

Single line Code

This an inline `<paste code here>` code formatting with a single backtick(`) at start and end around the code.

Ok and in case I want a middle li?
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 04 2016 15:53
you probably want to be a little more specific with your selector incase you put other lists on your page
maybe give the list an id, and then the selector would be like...
$('#listId>li').last();
could do a space instead of > also, but li's are usually a direct descendent of ul or ol, and specificity is always good practice

@badc0ded What about this: var target = $('#listID:last-child);

that should work also,
in theory you should be able to use nth-child and last-child selectors

Hello
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 04 2016 16:02
you can also add data tags to your li's and use those to select them

<style>
<h2> {color:Blue;} CatPhotoApp</h2>
</style>

<p>Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>

Your h2 element should be blue.
Ensure that your stylesheet h2 declaration is valid with a semicolon and closing brace.

Hi Guys so I am on like task 254 on my freecode camp journey, and I have realised I could do with learning more about the thinking and thought process of a programmer can anyone recommend any good material in which to learn this please?

@navneetjain14 there should be an example there also. you don't want to put html into your style tags, just css
