@amps55 the <img> element should be in between the <a> and </a> tags.
And check which attributes should belong to which elements.
@ringothedoodle CSS works like selector { property: value; }
So if you want to set the font-family of say p elements, then p is your selector:

:point_right: algorithm no repeats please [wiki]

Problem Explanation:

  • This task requires us to look at each possible permutation of a string. This is best done using a recursion function. Being able to build a function which collects all permutations of a string is a common interview question, so there is no shortage of tutorials out there on how to do this, in many different code languages.
  • This task can still be daunting even after watching a tutorial. You will want to send each new use of the function 3 inputs: 1. a new string (or character array) that is being built, 2. a position in your new string that's going to be filled next, and 3. an idea of what characters (more specifically positions) from the original string have yet to be used. The pseudo code will look something like this:

    ```
    var str = ???;
    perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far){
    if(current string is finished) {
    print current string;
    }else{
    for(var i = 0; i < str.length; i++) {
    if(str[i] has not been used) {
      put str[i] into the current position;
      mark str[i] as used
      perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far)
      unmark str[i] as used because another branch in the tree for i + 1 will still likely use it;
    }
    }
    }
    }
May 05 2016 01:08
@TonyTetra - first thing to do for your page on CodePen is to remove the <html>, <head>, and <body> tags from the HTML panel - that will only cause you grief. Put your CSS in the CSS panel (without the <style> tags. You should put your entire content of your page in a <div> tag to wrap it, and then you can style it with the Bootstrap class "text-center", or "center-block" (although text-center seems to work for your image, and to get the header centered. You also need to change the colors, but you'll get to that.
and if you don't want to use Bootstrap, then you can just look at what the text-center class does for you, probably what @badc0ded said.
how do I override class declarations by styling ID Attributes. It looks like the code is right but I'm obviously missing something.
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
May 05 2016 01:10
@TonyTetra - the reason you don't want those <html>, <head>, and <body>, tags on CodePEn is that it plugs the code that you put in the panels and config elements into a template that already has those tags. It will generate invalid HTML, which might eventually cause a problem.
@amecham1 - it is mostly recommended (from the reading that I've done) not to style using ID values. What is it you're trying to do?
TonyTetra
Oh I didn't knew that. I'm always so used to doing it that way.
Yes, it is good to be able to use it when you're on your own site, but CodePen doesn't work that way, so you have to adapt for that...
@TonyTetra - another thing, you usually cannot use imgur for images, they do not allow cross-linking from their site. I cannot see the background image, and that's probably why.
Andrew
}
</style>
<h1 id="orange-text pink-text blue-text">Hello World!</h1>
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
May 05 2016 01:15
@amecham1 - oh, well, if they want you do it for the exercise, it does work. It looks like you have a problem - I don't think that you can put multiple ID values in an attribute like this: id="orange-text pink-text blue-text" - spaces are not allowed in an ID, and I think it will be interpreted that way. Classes can be used that way, but not ID values.
and your style declaration for an ID should have the name preceded by the # in the <style> section. And you do not have orange-text spelled correctly, at least in the code that you posted.
Hi guys, I'm currently working on the "Build a Tribute Page" challenge and I'm a bit stuck on a couple of points. I know the user stories only require a an image/text/and a link to an external web page, but I'm trying to make my tribute page look relatively similar to the example.
Every time I throw up bullet points for the unordered list I can center the text, but the bullet itself is left oriented and everything I've seen as a fix on google lists the fix as css, not bootstrap, but the video says all the coding is done in bootstrap. Is there an option I'm missing here?
@irashii What you probably want is to set the width of the <ul> which if you want to do using Bootstrap, could be done by giving it a column size.
Or wrapping it in a div that has a column size.
You could center it by using offset.
your style declaration you want to remove the h2 and put a dot before red-text
a dot signifies a class
May 05 2016 02:25
:point_right: algorithm arguments optional [wiki]
Explanation:
It can be quite complicated to understand what needs to be done. There are always many ways to do something when coding but regardless of the algorithm used, we have to create a program that does the following:
  • It has to add two numbers passed as parameters and return the sum.
  • It has to check if any of the numbers are actual numbers, otherwise return undefined and stop the program right there.
  • It has to check if it has one or two arguments passed. More are ignored.
  • If it has only one argument then it has to return a function that uses that number and expects another one, to then add it.
@Mrblue27 based on how you wrote it just there, you need to do <div class="container"></div
>
instead of what you wrote in that first sentence
.container is used when selecting the class in CSS
@TonyTetra the image on top of the bg image isn't really something you see too often as it's a bit busy. I'd either put a border or background behind the image or change the site background to a solid color
@ItsMuse that's because the url stores the code too
@pmtaylor832 - it says "give each button a unique ID, starting with target1 and ending with target6." You've put those targetN items in the class attribute. They should not be there, they should be in an id="target1" attribute, as an example. And when you take them out of the class attribute, remove that extra space.
@pmtaylor832 - the class attribute in an HTML element associates the element with some CSS class that uses CSS rules to style the element according to what you set up. You can assign multiple class names to an element, space separated, as they show. the ID attribute is a separate thing, can only have one value, and that value has to be unique on a page. Normally you use the ID values to access the elements with javascript (or jQuery), although it can be used for styling. In the CSS <style> section, classes are entered with a period prefixed to the class name, .class1, and IDs are entered with a # prefix on the name #target1.
I was wondering if someone could help me with "Target Elements by Class Using jQuery". I need to use the jQuery 'addClass()' function to give the classes 'animated' and 'shake' to all my elements with the class 'well'. My code so far: <<script>
$("button").addClass("animated bounce");
});
$(".well").ready(function(){
$(".text-primary").addClass("animated shake");
});
</script>>...
@tesfie - it should be spelled .addClass()... a capital C in there
I'm pretty sure arr.push() returns something else.
Sascha Bratton
arr.push(item) adds the item to the arr array
It's going to return true if it works
and returns the item you added
actually it's the new length of the array?
Actually it returns the length, yeah
Thomas Noe
Sascha Bratton
@saschabratton
@emeraldtea if you are trying to add item to the array, you don't need the assignment to arr and in fact you are overwriting arr such that it's not an array anymore, which is why it doesn't have the shift() method.
:point_right: algorithm search and replace [wiki]
Problem Explanation:
  • You will create a program that takes a sentence, then search for a word in it and replaces it for a new one while preserving the uppercase if there is one.
:point_right: capitalize first letter of string [wiki]
Capitalize the First Letter of a String
To capitalize the first letter of a random string, you should follow these steps:
  1. Get the first letter of the string;
  2. Convert the first letter to uppercase;
  3. Get the remainder of the string;
  4. Concatenate the first letter capitalized with the remainder of the string and return the result;
1. Get the First Letter of the String
You should use charAt(http://github.com/FreeCodeCamp/FreeCodeCamp/wiki/) method, at index 0, to select the first character of the string.
var string = "freeCodecamp";
string.charAt(0); // Returns "f"
NOTE: charAt is preferable than using [ ] (bracket notation) as str.charAt(0) returns an empty string ('') for str = '' instead of undefined in case of ''[0].
@coymeetsworld I don't think I understand what you mean. I have my row, and my columns should add up to 12, so my col-md-4 should give me 3 elements, right? Where would I put another row?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 05 2016 06:30
yes @toshiru you can
@trose1189 when you create div with class col-md-4, you're saying you want a column with width 4 for medium sized devices
4 is a relative number, the size it expects per row is 12
so you can have 3 columns of 4, 2 columns of 6, 4 columns of 3, etc
when the columns in your row don't exactly add to 12 (having less or more) it probably will cause issues
there's something else though, I tried your code with just 3 streamers and the 3rd one cuts to a new line, still looking at it
Tessa Bradford
@trose1189
May 05 2016 06:33
Ok, I understand that. But how would I change my code? (Thank you for the help, by the way). I was thinking the issue was with the margins. I want the boxes separated, but it's when the margin gets toyed with that my spacing gets ruined.
Your page looks great. I think you should try the collapse option bootstrap provides. From the docs: The navbar collapses into its vertical mobile view when the viewport is narrower than @grid-float-breakpoint, and expands into its horizontal non-mobile view when the viewport is at least @grid-float-breakpoint in width.
If you want the font to resize im afraid it will make a terrible user experience.
@tcapre01 well, you don't have to worry about the breakpoint. But i see you are not using http://getbootstrap.com/components/#navbar and that makes it a little more advanced. @sajmalyousef you need to create a new style instead of just adding font-size: 16px; to .red-text
you want to make all <p> tags have 16px, but you're only doing that for anything with class red-text.
So the h2 tag will have 16 px (don't want)
The p tag with red-text class will have 16 px (ok)
The p tag with no red-text class will not have 16px (not ok)
For example, if we wanted to create a CSS class called larger-image that gave HTML elements a width of 500 pixels, we'd use:
<style>
.larger-image {
width: 500px;
}
</style>
Create a class called smaller-image and use it to resize the image so that it's only 100 pixels wide.
Can someone please tell me how I deal with an unknown number of arguments? specifically for the "Sorted Union" challenge? I've created a not very eloquent solution for arr3 but uniteUnique can potentially how 4 arguments+
function uniteUnique(arr1, arr2, arr3) {
 if (arr3 === undefined){
   arr3 = [];
 }
  var joined = arr1.concat(arr2).concat(arr3);
  var uniqueArray = joined.filter(function(item, pos){
    return joined.indexOf(item) == pos;
  });
  return uniqueArray;
}
uniteUnique([1, 2, 3], [5, 2, 1]);
@Shirmardi look the the arguments variable
@Shirmardi function test(){console.log(arguments.length);} test(1, 'a', true); // 3
nicer :
function test(){console.log(arguments.length);}
test(1, 'a', true); // 3
@designviacode , I am familiar with Angular.js. It can cause SEO issues since many search engines would just analyze the HTML code coming back from the server. So if your site did a lot of processing within the browser using things like Angular these changes might not appear within Search results. Does this make sense?
Guys, I need help. Can't understand what am I doing wrong in this problem . Here's what you need: Your left-well element should have a red background.
You should use the .parent() function to modify this element.
The .parent() method should be called on the #target1 element.
Only use jQuery to add these classes to the element. .
:point_right: brownie points [wiki]
The number beside your picture on Free Code Camp tells you how many Brownie Points you have.
A user profile picture next to a with Brownie Points score
There are two ways you can get Brownie Points:
  1. Complete challenges - you get one point per challenge you complete
  2. Help other campers in chat - each time you help another camper and they thank you (by typing "thanks @yourname"), you will get a point
Brownie Points help you look like the kind of person who codes a lot, shares relevant links, and helps people.
They also add to your Streak.
@Patrick0308 Maybe it's a point but I don't believe that's the main one. I read somewhere that in this case: ```
$('.item').click(function() {
$(this).remove();
});
The code won't work.. you need to use it like:
$(document).on('click', 'item', function() {
$(this).remove();
});
```

@dhcodes So .addEventListener is the new way of using .on?
Dylan
@dhcodes
May 05 2016 14:24
@aGirlWhoCodes addEventListener('click', function() { }) is the javascript way of jQuery's $(selector).click(do something);

@HorsemanJnr - there are no numbers for challenges - the points that are shown are dependent on a number of things - exercises completed, help given in chat rooms, etc. You should copy and paste the title of the challenge...

@aGirlWhoCodes I'm not sure if you can attach a pure js method to a jQuery selector. If you're already using jQuery, then it seems the consensus is to use .on

hey guys, I'm having a really hard time understanding Bootstrap, I don't know what the hell is the issue
http://codepen.io/abdulahhamzic/pen/oxJdBe
Check this out
Why doesn't the paragraph restrict to only the left 6 columns of the div?
I added the col-md-6 class to the div that contains the paragraph, but it seems like it doesn't react at all
jdownhower
@jdownhower
May 05 2016 14:40
@hamzicabdulah , Bootstrap assumes 12 columns. Try adding a 2nd 6 column div so there are a total of 12 within the same row.

@hamzicabdulah - a row has 12 columns - you might need to somehow fill in the other 6 columns with something - an empty div, for example, that has the same class, or a combination of other divs with column settings that add up to 12 total for the row.
Abdulah Hamzic
@hamzicabdulah
May 05 2016 14:42
@khaduch Nope, doesn't work
@jdownhower That does not work
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
May 05 2016 14:43
@hamzicabdulah - also, if you have one continuous string of text that exceeds 6 columns width, it won't show the effect properly. Break it up into separate words. Put some spaces in there.

@hamzicabdulah you dont actually have to use it ;)
or do you mean the challenges on FCC?
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
May 05 2016 14:46

@hamzicabdulah - another thing, which you might realize, is that the container also restricts the width of the content area. You're welcome.

Another thing to watch out for, on CodePen, is that CodePen uses a template to generate the page, so you should not have the <html>, <head>,and <body>, tags in there.

put everything in the proper places, CodePen plugs it into the template. Not always a problem, but sometimes it can cause issues.

@khaduch I'm using bootstrap for responsive design actually
Actually, I'm learning bootstrap*, more accurately
for that matter
Is there a better way for adding responsive design to your websites
Btw thanks for the advice on using the basic tags on codepen, I'll keep that in mind too :)

Ken Haduch
@khaduch
May 05 2016 14:54
@hamzicabdulah - Bootstrap is good for responsive design. I think that there are other ways to do it, but Bootstrap seems to be pretty popular. I was recently perusing some articles about using flex for responsive design, and I've seen some people here using it. Here is an article http://tutorialzine.com/2016/04/5-flexbox-techniques-you-need-to-know-about/ that contains some information about using flex for that. Might be good to know both, and there might be other popular ones. It depends on whose page you're trying to support and what they used?
