@jdownhower SQL's not really my thing, but I’ve been through a couple on this list as well to help me understand stuff at work: http://www.vertabelo.com/blog/notes-from-the-lab/18-best-online-resources-for-learning-sql-and-database
'Learn SQL the Hard Way' is probably the most practically useful, but it’s a bit rough

Hi, Please help me on the following task: nest your existing a element within a new p element (just after the existing h2 element) so that the surrounding paragraph says "View more cat photos", but where only "cat photos" is a link, and the rest of the text is plain text. And this is my code: <h2 class="red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>

<p>View more <a href="http://www.freecatphotoapp.com">cat photos</a> </p>. For some reason the "View More" is not appearing.

TheIcyStar

@BRashad try this: <a href="url">link text</a>
so I guess you can use <p href="url">link text here</p>

``` function dropElements(arr, func) {
while (true) {
if (arr.length === 0 || func(arr[0])) { // If array is empty or truth test passes, return it.
return arr;
}
arr.shift();  // Remove first item from the head.
}
}
dropElements([1, 2, 3, 9, 2], function(n) {return n > 2; }); ```
sry about the markdown, got it wrong
but my question is, why isnt 'while(true)' redundant
function dropElements(arr, func) {
while (true) {
  if (arr.length === 0 || func(arr[0])) {  // If array is empty or truth test passes, return it.
      return arr;
    }
    arr.shift();  // Remove first item from the head.
  }
}
dropElements([1, 2, 3, 9, 2], function(n) {return n > 2; });
there it is
I thought that in an 'if' statement, the condition is taken as being true, or assumed to be true
So, while (true) seems redundant? I mean I'm wrong but I don't get why
a elements, also known as anchor elements, are used to link to content outside of the current page.
Here's a diagram of an a element. In this case, the a element is used in the middle of a paragraph element, which means the link will appear in the middle of a sentence.
a diagram of how anchor tags are composed with the same text as on the following line
Here's an example:
<p>Here's a <a href="http://freecodecamp.com"> link to Free Code Camp</a> for you to follow.</p>
Create an a element that links to http://freecatphotoapp.com and has "cat photos" as its anchor text.
So when he uses just Boostrap for the tribute page project he's just using Boostrap predined classes? Because it looks like on his sample page he's using a border? Or can that be done in Boostrap too.
@lukenetti3 @lukenetti3 Css (Cascading style sheet) is used to styling the page. Html codes will just have plain words but to style them that where css comes in handy. Notice that bootstrapping use classes & id too which is a css concept. Hope that helps.
Hi guys - getting a bit stuck with a challenge - I don't think I am interpreting the question correctly
Nest all of your radio buttons within a <div class="row"> element. Then nest each of them within a <div class="col-xs-6"> element.
I start with the following related to the buttons:
<div class="row">
<div class="col-xs-4">
<button class="btn btn-block btn-primary"><i class="fa fa-thumbs-up"></i> Like</button>
</div>
<div class="col-xs-4">
<button class="btn btn-block btn-info"><i class="fa fa-info-circle"></i> Info</button>
</div>
<div class="col-xs-4">
<button class="btn btn-block btn-danger"><i class="fa fa-trash"></i> Delete</button>
</div>
</div>
I would interpret that the 'radio' buttons are already in a div with class of 'row' - (but when i 'run tests' i don't get the tick
Iskya
@iskya
May 08 2016 05:05
you need de col-xs-6 not col-xs-4
Aus
@austinley
May 08 2016 05:06
Thanks @iskya - I had tried that, but that doesn't adjust the result (i.e.
Nest all of your radio buttons inside one div with the class row.
Nest each of your radio buttons inside its own div with the class col-xs-6.
<h2 class="red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>
Dan Couper
@DanCouper
May 08 2016 08:01
Yeah, it’s called a curried function: Instead of returning the result directly, you return a function with the next bit:
function adder(a) {
  return function(b) {
    return a + b;
  }
}
This means you can fill in the argument at a different time
Like...
var add2 = adder(2)
add2(2)
// 4
add2(6)
// 8
You can do it to arbitrary depth, you just keep returning functions
@TheKetan2 what you do is make addTogether have one argument (num1), then return another function that takes one argument (num2) and in that return num1 + num2 . What you’re attempting to do is make sure every function that’s nested inside each other has one and only one argument
@DanCouper
May 08 2016 08:50
@TheKetan2 so normally you’d make a function like
function add(num1, num2) {
  return num1 + num2
}
But for that to work, you need to pass both arguments - add(1, 2). What you want in this case is the ability to pass the arguments on-by-one, and the way you do that in JS is
function add(num1) {
  return function(num2) {
    return num1 + num2
  }
}
What you’re doing in yours is definitely in the right direction: you’re checking if there are any other arguments - coding defensively. For this task, I don’t think you need to be as careful. I find it easiest to think about it visually, in the way above, you’re taking the second argument and moving it down into its own function. You can do it to arbitrary depth as well, but it gets extremely confusing and unwieldy because the arguments have to come in the original order:
// uncurried version:
function add(a, b, c, d) { return a + b + c + d }
// stupid curried version:
function add(a) {
  return function(b) {
    return function(c) {
      return function(d) {
        return a + b + c + d
      }
    }
  }
}
@TheKetan2 :+1:
Just some advice, use explicit arguments. If someone else is reading your code and you’ve written a function that needs parameters, then it should have arguments. Also, doing this for the addTogether function means you avoid using arguments; there are better methods now available & it’s maybe best practise to avoid, be explicit if at all possible (note as of the current & future versions of JS (ES2015 +), arguments doesn’t really have much use & is basically retained for backwards compatibility).
function addTogether(num1, num2) {
  // I just assumed integers, but the `typeof == ‘'number` would work OK.
  if(num2 === undefined && Number.isInteger(num1)) // return your function here
  if(Number.isInteger(num1) || Number.isInteger(num2)) // return your sum here
}
Dan Couper
@DanCouper
May 08 2016 10:18
@BKinahan no, it’s an actual array:
function add(…args) {
  return args.reduce((a,b) => a+b)
}
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Functions/rest_parameters
The rest parameter syntax allows us to represent an indefinite number of arguments as an array.
@cyberwizkid no, a CDN is online, you need a local copy linked. A CDN is just files hosted somewhere else, if you want to work offline, you need the files offline
function myFunction() {
  var name = "";
  var quote = "";
  for (i = Math.floor((Math.random() * 15) + 1); i < arr.length; i++) {
    quote = arr[i][0];
    name = arr[i][1];
     $("#quotebox").text(quote);
    $("#namebox").text(name);
console.log(quote);
console.log(name);
    return;
  }
@thenote If you mean vertically as well as horizontally, then: You make the body at least the height of the screen (min-height: 100% or min-height:100vh). Then you give the body display: flex; justify-content: centre; align-items: centre;. See https://philipwalton.github.io/solved-by-flexbox/demos/vertical-centering/
If you just mean horizontally, then just give the container a width and margin:auto left and right, e.g.
.myDiv {
  width: 400px;
  margin: 0 auto;
For anyone else that wants to help here's my question:
I have a video playing in the background that goes to full-width and is responsive to the screen size. I have a title/text over the video. But I cannot for the life of me figure out how to vertically center this text to the video in a responsive way! Thanks for any help! http://stackoverflow.com/questions/37094332/how-to-vertically-center-text-over-responsive-video
PS If you don't know the answer to this question, upvoting it on StackOverflow will help out a bunch! I spent hours researching the question and there's no clear answer yet. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/37094332/how-to-vertically-center-text-over-responsive-video
Okay i think the Card counting Challenge is broken.
I am doing it and I saw someone else in here doing it as well and having issues, I have put mine in a JS Fiddle and done Console.log as well as used the cfunctions in the example and the functions in the example return correctly
the check is just not accepting it
var count = 0;
function cc(card) {
// Only change code below this line
switch (card){
case 2:
case 3:
case 4:
case 5:
case 6:
count += 1;
break;
case 7:
case 8:
case 9:
  count += 0;
break;
case 10:
case "J":
case "Q":
case "K":
case "A":
  count -= 1;
break;
}
if (count > 0) {
return count + " Bet";
} else {
return count + " hold";
}
// Only change code above this line
}
Hello people. Here is my first "challenge" in which i'd like to make few changes.
https://codepen.io/unrealityxi/full/YqBzdp/
There are two things that bug me:
First: i feel that way in which i made those boxes is a bit clumsy, + as it is it hides some text on certain screen sizes. Any suggestion on how to improve it?
Second: I used jquery to wrap all img elements with <a href="#"></a>. Is there way to get it to determine image's source and append it in place of hashtag?
i hope you are doing great :)
Hey guys, I have a question. I found a really great and beautiful css framework, but there is one thing I cannot explain. For its grid system it sets some css styles to html elements (<row> and <column> and <block>) that are not existing in the HTML specification. It works if I use them, but how is this possible and why are they doing that? Seems not to be best practise.
The framework is called „Kube“ and is here:
https://imperavi.com/kube/css/grid/
Maybe someone can make a quick download open the kube.css an have a look for
row {
…
}
May 08 2016 14:44
@FHoffmannCode I would guess the buttons have some default padding. Try adding col-xs-offset-1 on your name. You could also try putting them in the same <div class="row"> as suggested by @unrealityxi . You could also add some left padding to your name.
149203
@149203
May 08 2016 14:44
@kjufactor anything can be made as an html tag and it is ok. You can say <cookies></cookies> if you want. Or <pickles></pickles>. As long as the framework is designed to handle those tags, there is no problem.
If I would like to use multiple frameworks. F.e. A few pieces from bootstrap, a few ones from Kube etc. you get the point. How to handle that when some class definitions are present in both frameworks
149203
@149203
May 08 2016 14:58
@upendrahanda Any "weird" elements you'd create wouldn't have any built-in functions. They'd just be "placeholders" so to speak. You can give them styles in CSS or make them targets in JS though. Again, not recommended, much better to use classes and ids. But some templates and libraries do so as @kjufactor noticed. :)
May 08 2016 15:00
@kjufactor im not sure but from programming exp in other languages, you can always resolve name conflicts by calling its immediate parent. Like, framework1.class, framework2.class.. maybe thats the same way there too
149203
@149203
May 08 2016 15:00
@kjufactor which ever template loads last overwrites the previous style. Load order matters. Good practice is to use 1 template and then have a custom.css file that loads after it in the html and makes any changes you'd like.
@kjufactor That's the problem with frameworks, as you're discovering. Most front-end devs do what I said (1 framework with a custom.css overwrite) or they come up with their own framework. Yes, frameworks can be a lot of work. :)
In C++ you can make namespaces
In JS one can make modules
could you let me know how to add image in to website?
149203
@149203
May 08 2016 15:05
@kjufactor No there isn't. The inherent problem is CSS is global. It is literally the worst "language". You can find hundreds of articles online talking about why CSS is the worst. :)
@149203 never used display: flex
but seems that prevent ur h1,h3 to go in to different lines
try remove n use margin: auto
add some fixed width
n probably some play with padding-top or margin-top if needed
@upendrahanda
May 08 2016 15:06
the problem with the web is that it limits the size of files to be loaded for better performance, maybe one of the reasons why frameworks overwrite each other
ok so can anyone answer my question - why do we need properties while we can get and set private variable values via functions too?
149203
@149203
May 08 2016 15:08
@kjufactor Yeah, I consider myself an ok coder, but have to throw my hands up with CSS consistently. :(
@upendrahanda Because properties are clean and fast and contain 1 more piece of information, what it's attached to.
upendrahanda
@upendrahanda
May 08 2016 15:09
can you elaborate the phrase "what it's attached to?"
qfactor
@kjufactor
May 08 2016 15:10
@149203 Maybe one can wrap all into its own custom element and run through a pre processor
upendrahanda
@upendrahanda
May 08 2016 15:10
clean and fast, got it.. maybe like it can be used like variables without needing to use () notation of methods
A property has a relationship to the "key variable" and a relationship to all the other properties under that key as well.
if I am not wrong, do you mean that if I have a property Y for variable y, which is a string, then I can directly use methods like Y.substring() on it while a function will require me to do it manually?
May 08 2016 15:22
What I'm trying to undestand is how to use unit testing when you have to wait until webhook arrives to your application and then verify database
Should I use some kind of event loop? Like sleeping with max timeout == 60sec
149203
@149203
May 08 2016 15:24
@upendrahanda No, I'm just speaking about the benefits of properties vs. variables.
a.x
a.y
a.z
all have a relationship to each other (and a)
var a
var x
var y
var z
have no relationship to each other.
If you're asking a harder question, I probably don't know. :)
@konovalov-nk You'll want to research and understand "callbacks" - it's a big topic, so beyond the scope of chat. And I'm not the best teacher. See also, "callback hell" :)
@digiajay overall a nice looking page. Just a suggestion, under your “external links” section you have three links, each with a repition - “Click here for”, instead of saying “click here to check out more about Car Museum”, just write “Geedee Car Museum” and make it the anchor text. That looks better, in my opinion.
@FHoffmannCode I think there is something you could do like block-center on the containing div or button-center. I had a lot of trouble centering multiple divs stacked in a row. I just out everything in its own row and used offsets
@FHoffmannCode double check all your opening and closing divs. It's hard for me to follow them as I'm on mobile atm but you may have put your kkk button inside the top col-xs-1 so the button is restricted to the left side.
