@AIRyndon @coymeetsworld sure it’s not quite finish but here it is:
function truncateString(str, num) {
  // Clear out that junk in your trunk
  var arr = "";
  var i = 1;
  if(str.length > num){
      arr = str.slice(0, num-3) + '...';
      return console.log(arr);
  }else if(str.length === str) {
      str -= str;
      return console.log(str);
  }else if(str.length === str + 2){
      str -= str -2;
      return console.log(str);
  }else{
      return str;
  }

}

@cyffer hint check against num :)
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 10 2016 00:05
don't think you can do str -= str @cyffer
or str -= str - 2
you also don't want to return console.log, just put console.log to see your output
also don't compare str.length to str, that won't do anything

Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 10 2016 00:07
ok, just try to start off small don't have to code everything at once
try to pass first 2 tests first, then write code to pass the 3rd test as well as make sure previous tests pass too
then 4th, then 5th, then 6th, same idea

Hey guys, I'm trying to find the largest number in each subarray and want to make my code shorter. Is there a better way then using variables a,b,c,d?
function largestOfFour(arr) {
var a = 0;
var b = 0;
var c = 0;
var d = 0;
var newArray = [];
  // You can do this!
  for (var i = 0; i < arr.length; i++) {
    for (var j = 0; j < arr[i].length; j++) {
      if ( i === 0 && arr[i][j] > a) {
            a = arr[i][j];
        } else if ( i === 1 && arr[i][j] > b) {
            b = arr[i][j];
        } else if ( i === 2 && arr[i][j] > c) {
            c = arr[i][j];
        } else if ( i === 3 && arr[i][j] > d) {
            d = arr[i][j];
        }
    }
  }
   newArray.push(a,b,c,d);
    console.log(newArray);
}

largestOfFour([[4, 5, 1, 3], [13, 27, 18, 26], [32, 35, 37, 39], [1000, 1001, 857, 1]]);

@norkuy you don't need 4 variables for this, just need 1
when you finish the inner loop push it into newArray
and reset the value

This is the challenge I'm working on now: Link to External Pages with Anchor Elements

This is my code:

<link href="https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Lobster" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">

<style>
.red-text {
color: red;
}

h2 {
font-family: Lobster, Monospace;
}

p {
font-size: 16px;
font-family: Monospace;
}

.thick-green-border {
border-color: green;
border-width: 10px;
border-style: solid;
border-radius: 50%;
}

.smaller-image {
width: 100px;
}
</style>

<h2 class="red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>

<img class="smaller-image thick-green-border" src="https://bit.ly/fcc-relaxing-cat">

<p class="red-text">Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>
<p class="red-text">Purr jump eat the grass rip the couch scratched sunbathe, shed everywhere rip the couch sleep in the sink fluffy fur catnip scratched.</p>

<p><a hreff="http://freecatphotoapp.com">"cat photos"</a></p>

I'm not able to move on because I'm being told that I need an a element that links to http://freecatphotoapp.com but it's there, can anyone help?

@acolding Did you remove the pieces of code it told you to remove?
@acolding <p>Heres a <a href="http://freecatphotoapp.com"</a> link to some cat photos.
use that for the link
in the img class i remember it saying you have to remove the smaller-img tag and replace it with img-responsive

<style>
h2 {color: blue;} CatPhotoApp
</style>

<p>Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>

Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 10 2016 01:27
ok so the CatPhotoApp needs to go outside of the style
and you need to create h2 tags surrounding it
i.e. <h2>CatPhotoApp</h2>
Raizza R. De La Cruz
@azziar
May 10 2016 01:28

<style>
h2 {color: blue;}<h2> CatPhotoApp</h2>
</style>

<p>Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>

like that?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 10 2016 01:28
put that outside of the style tags
nothing inside the style tags you see on the page exactly
they're more like rules
<style>
h2 { color: blue;}
</style>
Means whenever the browser sees h2 tags, it will color the text inside blue
does that make sense?
Raizza R. De La Cruz
@azziar
May 10 2016 01:29

<style>
h2 {color: blue;}
</style><h2> CatPhotoApp</h2>

<p>Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>

like that?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 10 2016 01:29
yeah
you can break h2 on a new line if you want to make it more readable
<style>
h2 {color: blue;}
</style>
<h2> CatPhotoApp</h2>
<p>Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>
think the challenge says to make the color red though, blue was just used in the example

Coy Sanders

anything between the style tags should only be CSS code
tags are anything between the <> characters

Coy Sanders

May 10 2016 01:34
@ShaffiWebdesigner you want to make sure your divs are closed properly
every <div> should have a closing </div> tag
also you don't give the h2 tag the class col-xs-8, you give that to a div
only divs should use the bootstrap classes row or col

@dhcodes So I have been watching some tutorial vids... I understand this code but dont remember each piece if I had to reconstruct it from scratch... Basically What I want to do now is save the location coordinates as a variable so that I can convert that variable into a location.
Any tips on where Ive went wrong at the bottom. Or should I just import some kind of geocoding API to do it for me?

@krish0912 The code you showed me worked on my end. I considered the fact that there was something odd going on with your text input, that's why I'm suggesting deleting what you typed in on FCC and pasting in a copy from the clipboard.
If that doesn't work try copying the text you posted from chat also.

In the challenge: "Get Geolocation Data " I can't get the co-ordinates to show
I've tested in Chrome AND Firefox (I'm on a mac)
I've accepted the permissions access to my location AND I'm accessing the freecodecamp website through HTTPS (I know that Google recently deprecated the use of navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition( param[, param, ...]) that isn't in an HTTPS context. - detailed here: https://developers.google.com/web/updates/2016/04/geolocation-on-secure-contexts-only?hl=en )
What gives? Anyone else had a similar problem.
If I add a failure callback to the code - this is the only callback that fires in both my browsers.
if (navigator.geolocation) {
        console.info ("got the navigator context.");
        navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(function(position) {

            $("#data").append("latitude: " + position.coords.latitude + "<br>longitude: " + position.coords.longitude);
        }, function () {
          // called when getCurrentPosition fails
          console.info ("the call to getCurrentPosition didn't work in my browser.");

@TimothyjT
May 10 2016 04:40
Well the id for about is aboove the h2 heading
I figured it would include it
upendrahanda
@upendrahanda
May 10 2016 04:41

it is like this

<div id="#parent> H2 HEADING HERE
<div id=#child>
PARAGRAPH HERE
</div>
</div>

so if you use #child, it will send you to paragraph

TimothyjT
@TimothyjT
May 10 2016 04:41
oh ok well I have h2 heading under #child
I’m not arguing, just genuinely curious
Maybe I’m missing something
upendrahanda
@upendrahanda
May 10 2016 04:42
yes, you have it under child which is id about
dont worry, its ok
TimothyjT
@TimothyjT
May 10 2016 04:42
oh..
upendrahanda
@upendrahanda
May 10 2016 04:43
sections will scroll you back to heading and about will scroll you to paragraph
TimothyjT
@TimothyjT
May 10 2016 04:43
Well I have the class row and that has id has id about then h2 is below that so shouldnt it take me back to h2 heading?
upendrahanda
@upendrahanda
May 10 2016 04:43
it is simple, when you click on hash anchors, they scroll that id on top of the page
Josh Alling
@joshalling
May 10 2016 04:43
@BRashad your document ready should be after the first script tag, not inside of it. Luke this, <script> $(document).ready();</script>
upendrahanda
@upendrahanda
May 10 2016 04:44
ok let me put this in this way, what if you would want to scroll to paragraph not heading?
TimothyjT
@TimothyjT
May 10 2016 04:44
I would make an id for the h2 heading and do like #h2heading
upendrahanda
@upendrahanda
May 10 2016 04:45
that would scroll you to heading, no?
TimothyjT
@TimothyjT
May 10 2016 04:45
Well I thought it would only take in the child
So like it will scroll to h2 heading but not include it and it will get cut off
upendrahanda
@upendrahanda
May 10 2016 04:46
no @TimothyjT , it will scroll to that id and include it too
TimothyjT
@TimothyjT
May 10 2016 04:46
Oh.
So then that means that if I have a id above the h2 heading, it should include it to right?
upendrahanda
@upendrahanda
May 10 2016 04:47
just imagine that there is an arrow on top-left of your page and the hashtag will align that id element in direction of that arrow
TimothyjT
@TimothyjT
May 10 2016 04:47
I think Im understanding.
upendrahanda
@upendrahanda
May 10 2016 04:47
no, it will include that id and content below it, nothing above it
TimothyjT
@TimothyjT
May 10 2016 04:47
Right, which the h2 heading is below it
Heres my code...
<div class="container-fluid" id="sections">
<div class="row" id="about">
<div class="col-xs-10">
<h2 class="title">About</h2>
right here, the id about is above the h2 heading
so if you linked the #about, it should include the h2 heading
upendrahanda

May 10 2016 04:48
ok let me check your portfolio again
TimothyjT
@TimothyjT
May 10 2016 04:49
sure thing. The way I tested it was by scrolling to the very bottom of the page and then clicking home.
It cut off the h2 heading for some strange reason.
It’s doing the same for each of the sections

Hi, i again need help: The task is: Add the animated class to all elements with type button.

Add the shake class to all the buttons with class .btn.

Add the btn-primary class to the button with id #target1. Your #target1 element should have the classes animated‚ shake and btn-primary. This is my code: <script>
$(document).ready(function() {
$("button").addclass("animated");
$(".btn").addclass("shake");
$("#target1").addclass("btn-primary")
$("#target1").addclass("animated")
$("#target1").addclass("shake")
});
</script> I do not understand how should i add several classes to the same element in jQuery. Thanks in advance.

I'm using codepen.io for the 1st time having some problem with Javascript session.. I was used to another sintax on the FCC interface but now it looks I don't need the "$" or $(document).ready(function()
For example, I could not make it run:
document.getElementsByTagName("h1")[0].style.fontSize = "80px";
$(document).ready(function() {
    $("h1").addClass("animated shake");
});

Hello Campers,
I'm on the intermediate algorithm: "Everything be true". Can anyone explain why

truthCheck([{"user": "Tinky-Winky", "sex": "male", "age": 0}, {"user": "Dipsy", "sex": "male", "age": 3}, {"user": "Laa-Laa", "sex": "female", "age": 5}, {"user": "Po", "sex": "female", "age": 4}], "age") should return false.

should return false? All the element in the array has the property "age" and 0 is a number so that data type value is consistent with the other age values

@TimothyjT so far, I found that a fixed position takes an element out of flow so it wont obey relativity, so margin is workaround. I will keep an eye on sol though

@123xylem well, I'm a bit confused, because from what I recalled this was using https but now I see it doesn't. If you google around you'll find the issue discussed on github etc
practically this call should not work, but it does ^^

I think it's because the IP API doesn't use the browser's geolocation feature.
It just grabs the IP and uses their own data/system to return data.

@123xylem ? to get the values you want you need to call the weather api. To get the long and lat with geolocation you can use the URL i've sent and it should work. It works for me

I am starting to work on the weather app and setting up the codepen but am not able to get the weather .. can anyone let me know what I am missing:
Justen Teguh
@JTeguh
May 10 2016 07:32

Hi, I'm trying to use the openweather api to show the local weather and I'm getting this error in the console:

Mixed Content: The page at 'https://codepen.io/Taygo0o/pen/LNMvXe' was loaded over HTTPS, but requested an insecure XMLHttpRequest endpoint 'http://api.openweathermap.org/data/2.5/weather?lat=50&lon=50&appid=965b069bddb5ea96b8fa2a874ae052dd'. This request has been blocked; the content must be served over HTTPS.

XMLHttpRequest cannot load http://api.openweathermap.org/data/2.5/weather?lat=50&lon=50&appid=965b069bddb5ea96b8fa2a874ae052dd. Failed to start loading.

This is how I'm calling it:

  var owmAPI = "http://api.openweathermap.org/data/2.5/weather?lat="+ 50 + "&lon=" + 50 + "&appid=965b069bddb5ea96b8fa2a874ae052dd";

  $.getJSON(owmAPI, function(result)   {
      console.log(result);
    console.log("STRINGIFY\n");
    document.write(JSON.stringify(result));
  });

I've tried calling with https:// but it results in an error when trying to connect. I believe because openweathermap requires a premium account to use https:

Any idea on this?

This code just doesnt work I guess
$(document).ready(function (){

  var x = document.getElementById("demo");
function getLocation() {
    if (navigator.geolocation) {
        navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(showPosition);
    } else {
       x.innerHTML = "Geolocation is not supported by this browser.";
    }
}
function showPosition(position) {
    x.innerHTML = "Latitude: " + position.coords.latitude +
    "Longitude: " + position.coords.longitude;

console.log("Latitude: " );}
});
Justen Teguh
@JTeguh

Yea my alert function works.. But this geocode thing doesnt... My alert works off an API with coords already in it
Justen Teguh
@JTeguh
May 10 2016 07:45
you mean you're trying your alert with something else rather than alert("Latitude: " + position.coords.latitude); or something along those lines?
or with your API I mean rather than what I listed up there?
Chris Cullen
@123xylem
May 10 2016 07:46
Yea my alert uses an API JSON- a database with preloaded coords etc
Justen Teguh
@JTeguh
May 10 2016 07:47
ahh okay
function showPosition(position) {
    x.innerHTML = "Latitude: " + position.coords.latitude +
    "Longitude: " + position.coords.longitude;

   alert("Latitude is: " + position.coords.latitude);

console.log("Latitude: " );}
});
That alert would not work then?
yours looks almost exactly like mine minus changing the demo id
I do have this other option though
function getLocation() {
  var timeoutVal = 10 * 1000 * 1000;

  if (navigator.geolocation) {
    navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(
      showPosition,
      displayError,
      {enableHighAccuracy: true, timeout: timeoutVal, maximumAge: 0});
  }
  else {
    // Geolocation does not work on this browser
    alert("Geolocation is not supported by this browser");
  }
}
I feel like the displayError option shouldn't make a difference though
I also have my functions outside of the document.ready
and all I do inside the document.ready is call
getLocation();

right-- thats different, though, @amiteh --
it wasn't you not to change the color from color: green; , which is wha you had before, i think, @amiteh
then, instead,
you make a class below the other stuff,
Create a CSS class called pink-text that gives an element the color pink. is the instruction
what the lesson is getting you to check is if the color will obey the color: green; form the body, or if it will obey the class color...
so it want you to have both
upendrahanda
@upendrahanda
May 10 2016 08:31
well @amiteh , you are suposed to make another class in style, pink-text and then use it in h1 element, which will override text color green that comes from body

id suggest checking the name in the test against the name of the function,
some of the algos were rewritten,
so you may have started with the old name, which is different than the new test
if the names match, then,
i'd suggest pasting your formatted code in https://gitter.im/FreeCodeCamp/HelpJavaScript

Hey, anyone online that could help me with some JS on my Twitch app? I finished the project but wanted to make a few edits, and I'm struggling to get a callback function to work the way I want it to.

Here's the pen: http://codepen.io/trose1189/full/xVmZRq/

Here's the bit I'm working on.

// Add Streamer to page
  $("#addStreamer").keypress(function(key) {
        if (key.which === 13) {
      var toAdd = $("#addStreamer").val().replace(/\s+/g, '');
      streamerInfo(toAdd);
      $("#alertsuccess").html("Added " + toAdd);
      $("#alertsuccess").fadeIn(1000, function(){
        $(this).delay(500).fadeOut(1000);
      });
      $("#addStreamer").val("");
    }
  });

I want the streamerInfo function to have a callback that checks to see if the profile was added correctly or not, but I can't seem to get it to work.

In Windows

Via GUI

  1. Download Varpanel.
  2. Open Varpanel.
  3. In PATH variable, add the relevant path (for example).

"Create a script element making sure it is valid and has a closing tag.
You should add $(document).ready(function() { to the beginning of your script element.
Close your $(document).ready(function() { function with });"

What is the meaning of this?

@Sevenhang , which of those tests did you fail?
you are on the challenge 'Learn how Script Tags and Document Ready Work', right?
Mr.seven
@Sevenhang
May 10 2016 09:25
yes
rphares
@rphares
May 10 2016 09:26
So... you need to make a script element at the beginning... example script element:
<script> SOME STUFF IN HERE, THIS IS AN EXAMPLE DONT COPY AND PASTE ME </script>
see the script tags?
thats the first part, ""Create a script element making sure it is valid and has a closing tag."
second one:
Mr.seven
@Sevenhang
May 10 2016 09:26

like tihs?

<script>
$(document).ready(function(){
to the beginning of your

})
$(document).ready(function(){ function with})
</script>

rphares
@rphares
May 10 2016 09:26
very close!
but, you dont need the text in there-- line three can be deleted,
And
you dont need the line $(document).ready(function(){ function with}) near the bottom,
you have two (document).ready's, @Sevenhang
you only need the first one
last,
Mr.seven
@Sevenhang
May 10 2016 09:28
<script>
$(document).ready(function(){

})

</script>
like this?
rphares
@rphares
May 10 2016 09:28
much better--
then, you can delete all the empty rows,
and
the editor may want you to use a ; at the end of the })
can you make it neat--
<script>
STUFF;
</script>

Use the jQuery addClass() function to give the classes animated and bounce to your button elements.
What is the meaning of this?

like this?

<script>
$(document).ready(function() {
$("button").addClass("bounce");
});
</script>
