Hey y’all! Hope everything is going well for you! I’m working on the Wikipedia project, and could definitely use a hand getting the call to the API working! Any help at all would be MUCH appreciated! https://codepen.io/Tecknologikal/pen/oxmgBW?editors=0011

How are we expected to use the Open Weather API when it doesn't use HTTPS
Alexander Six
@AlexanderSix
May 13 2016 00:34
@srolandmarshall I ended up not using that API, instead, I just googled for one, which I believe I found on Mashape. Give that a go and see if you can find something -there’s a lot of weather API’s out there. I believe I used Yahoo Weather’s API
Sam Marshall
@srolandmarshall
May 13 2016 00:41
@AlexanderSix do you know what the query string is then? I don't understand how to add my API to the query.
https://market.mashape.com/fyhao/weather-13 I have an account and API key
Alexander Six
@AlexanderSix
May 13 2016 00:44
@srolandmarshall So when you look at the API docs there, you should see a part entitled “Request Example”. In that section, that first line is your API url that you need to send to (without the curl —get —include part, and change the 1.0 lat and lon to whatever your coords are), and the following two lines are what your headers should be. Check out the $.ajax() function in jQuery’s documentation for how to format it all. Then all you have to do, after you’ve put the url and your headers in the ajax() method, is to write a success portion of the method, which is what your script should do if the call returns successfully

I really wish they covered stuff like this :P
Alexander Six
@AlexanderSix
May 13 2016 00:49
Yeah haha, it took me a LONG time to figure out how to make it work. Thankfully I’ve had some experience with calling API’s, although it’s from the back-end, since I primarily code in PHP (Laravel) at work haha
Sam Marshall
@srolandmarshall
May 13 2016 00:50
they really glossed over APIs prior to this.
Alexander Six
@AlexanderSix
May 13 2016 00:50
Yeah, I think they could do with a bit more about how to actually CALL them. I guess part of it is learning about how to call them on your own though, so I suppose there might be an underlying purpose to the rather skimpy covering haha
Sam Marshall
@srolandmarshall
May 13 2016 00:56
they covered CSS and HTML and the basics of JS in such detail though it seems poorly enacted though.
Alexander Six
@AlexanderSix
May 13 2016 00:56
Yeah, I agree. Especially since if anyone taking this is planning on diving into Web Applications or anything like that, learning AJAX calls and API calls is IMMENSELY important!

Need some help on Basic Algorithm scripting Seek and Destroy https://www.freecodecamp.com/challenges/seek-and-destroy.
function doesNotContain(val) {
  return val !== this;
}

function destroyer(arr , arg) {

  for (var i = 1; i < arguments.length; i+= 1) {
   arr = arr.filter(doesNotContain, arguments[i]);
   test = test.concat(arr[i]);
  }

  return arr;

  //returns [1,5,1] "destroyer([1, 2, 3, 5, 1, 2, 3], 2, 3) should return [1, 5, 1]."
  //Why does [1,5,1] !== [1, 5, 1] and how do you make the first the same format as the latter?
  //both test true for Array.isArray()...
  //... :'(
  // the MOST frustrating part is that return arguments[0] == [1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3] is FALSE....

Is there a regex I can use that will target Color='blue' and extract the value blue

Lemmy

May 13 2016 02:46
trying to return String.fromCharCode(charCode);
can't convert the code back to string
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 13 2016 02:47
right, because you're trying to make a single string from an array of numbers
just like you had to step through the original string to make numbers, you have to step through the other to reverse it
Lemmy
@imnotlammy
May 13 2016 02:47
if i manually input the numbers it works
@badc0ded so i have to make another loop
?
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 13 2016 02:48
that would be one approach
there are always many possible
Lemmy
@imnotlammy
May 13 2016 02:49
I dont understand why this doesn't work tho
the syntax is
String.fromCharCode(num1,num2,num3...);
wait
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 13 2016 02:49
you're not sending it num1,num2,num3
Lemmy
@imnotlammy
May 13 2016 02:49
nvm
its cause they're strings aren't they
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 13 2016 02:50
you're sending it [1,2,3,]
rather than multiple numeric arguments, you're sending it one array argument
sorry, scratch that, one long series of numbers
Lemmy
@imnotlammy
May 13 2016 02:50
i thought .join() returns string no?

Lemmy
@imnotlammy
May 13 2016 02:50

May 13 2016 02:50
you're not joining with a delimiter
just joining
Lemmy
@imnotlammy
May 13 2016 02:51
what should the delimiter be?
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 13 2016 02:51
like [1,2,3] .join() becomes '123'
Lemmy
@imnotlammy
May 13 2016 02:51
.join(",")?
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 13 2016 02:51
yep
try that
Lemmy
@imnotlammy
May 13 2016 02:51
same result
when i return charCode
it already gives me a string of numbers separated by commas

@imnotlammy
May 13 2016 02:53
What does the red dot even mean?
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded

red dot is usually indicator of a failed test, with the text explaining the test right beside it
Lemmy

no text
just red dot

@imnotlammy yes, that's the one i thought you were talking about. see the text right beside it saying " should decode to "

im just wondering why the output is a red dot
see the red dot under reset button
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 13 2016 03:10
it's not
oh, that's because what you're passing to fromCharCode isn't a char code
which is what it's looking for
here, it's a little adjustment to help you get started
function rot13(str) { // LBH QVQ VG!
  var charCode = [];

  for (i = 0; i < str.length; i++) {
    charCode.push(str.charCodeAt(i));
  }
var newStr = []
  charCode.forEach(function(x){newStr.push(String.fromCharCode(x))});

  return newStr.join('');

}

// Change the inputs below to test
rot13("SERR PBQR PNZC");
most of that is yours
i just added the forEach to convert the code to a letter and add it to newStr
all you have to do is work out the rotation logic, (when to add or subtract from the code before converting to a letter)

@SERJH you can't do a || b < 0
i mean y ou can but it isn't doing what you think
a || b < 0 means that in order to pass, 'a' needs to contain a non falsy value, or b has to be less than 0
does that make sense?
@phronisis which challenge are you on? i just wrote what you said you needed, a p tag with text that says view more with a space

you don't need to access the array with jquery
just do the selector of the node you want to put it into, then set it's html to the array[index]
like...
$('#quoteDiv').html(quoteArray[randomNumber()]);

May 13 2016 06:05
Hmm.. obviously the manual you sent was working for a lot of people according to discussion below in comments.
So you either didn't follow all the steps correctly or there could be something with your connection. It is really hard to determine without any error message. How long have you been waiting for the console answer from GitHub?

It means what it says - 'remote origin already exists'. You have to either delete the remote origin first (you already added it last time). Or you can skip the step.

@EldarT90 I didn't go through the tutorial by myself. So I don't think I can help here. Maybe you have to start a new repository or something like that.

step by step instructions
from some1 who knows how to do it

Jeff Gibson

May 13 2016 06:41
https://help.github.com/articles/cloning-a-repository/ (clone)
copy stuff over (this could be with copy paste using a mouse)
git add .
git commit -m 'initial commit'
git push origin master
<<enter password and stuff>>
success
so first make sure you're repo is on your computer in a folder
then make sure you say add this stuff to the repo
then say I'm commiting these changes to the repo
then say I'm going to push what I have in my local repo to github
does that help?
Eldar Tinjić
@EldarT90

Jeff Gibson

did you make sure you have the files from c9 in your new repo? After that you'll need to add everything using "git add ."
Eldar Tinjić
@EldarT90
May 13 2016 06:44
@gibbymt how can i make sure, by using git clone ?
is there some step between clone and git add
Jeff Gibson
@gibbymt
May 13 2016 06:45

so git clone says, make a local link on my computer.
git add . says add everything in this directory to the repo

you need to make sure your c9 files are all in that folder (where your repo is)

Eldar Tinjić
@EldarT90

git push origin master means put these in github

same shitty message with git status
i dont think its "searching" in right directory
take a look at this screenshot

that is the folder from git repo
but im trying to copy WHOLE database from c9
all these folders
to the git repo
Jeff Gibson

@gibbymt i dont know mate, can you give me the right command based on that screenshot
what should i input
in order to get it right
Jeff Gibson
@gibbymt
May 13 2016 06:56
ok, let's start fresh.
do a mkdir -p ../new_backend
then:
git clone https://github.com/YOUR-USERNAME/YOUR-REPOSITORY <<replace useful stuff
that should leave you with an empty directory and a brand new repo (fingerscrossed)
sorry cd ../new_backend
then the clone
Eldar Tinjić

whats next
i cloned it inside new_Backedn

Jeff Gibson
@gibbymt
May 13 2016 06:59
cool, now just copy over what you had in the old folder to there, you can do cp or right click/ect
Eldar Tinjić
@EldarT90
May 13 2016 07:00
and delete what is currently inside?
delete content of timestamp folder
and put everything else inside it ?
Jeff Gibson
@gibbymt
May 13 2016 07:00
no deleting needed
Eldar Tinjić
@EldarT90
May 13 2016 07:00
and should i put it into timestamp
or .git
Jeff Gibson
@gibbymt
May 13 2016 07:00
just copy/duplicate what you have to the new directory
Eldar Tinjić
@EldarT90
May 13 2016 07:00
which is subfolder
Jeff Gibson
@gibbymt
May 13 2016 07:00
everything to ./new_backend
no need to put stuff in .git (that's more just for git then you)
Eldar Tinjić
@EldarT90
May 13 2016 07:01
oke
next step
Jeff Gibson
@gibbymt
May 13 2016 07:01
looks like maybe just the files, and any directories that you made rather than the system when (like node modules)
Eldar Tinjić
@EldarT90
May 13 2016 07:02
oke everything is inside new_backends timeservice folder
Jeff Gibson
@gibbymt
May 13 2016 07:02
ok so now if you did ls/dir you'll see those files in ./new_backend
so you'll add all those files to your repo with "git add --all"
Eldar Tinjić
@EldarT90
May 13 2016 07:03
oke next command
Jeff Gibson
@gibbymt
May 13 2016 07:03
then "git commit -m 'initial commit' "
if you do a git status now you should see hopefully something, although since you're using an embeded tool maybe it's different....
Eldar Tinjić
@EldarT90
May 13 2016 07:03

@gibbymt
May 13 2016 07:06

they are all inside timestamp microservice

unless it's a blocker to need to use c9 I can promise that most enginners aren't using it so it's not a critical skill

May 13 2016 07:29
@gibbymt well id rather not setup this locally, i dont know how to and when i cause mess like the one i caused on c9 with too many repos or whathever, i dont know how to clean it
so before i master it on cloud
i would not setup it on my computer

so would it be best to use -1 z-index on that element or is there a better fix for that?
right just putting it ontop of navbar in css worked
thanks a lot guys

@gibbymt
May 13 2016 07:31
lives on the edge a little bit, I promise that git won't destroy you stuff, just make sure you've got a new directory, like mkdir -p c:/projects/timestamp
then cd c:/projects/timestamp
git clone ect
copy
git add --all
git commit -m 'initial commit'
git push origin master
Eldar Tinjić
@EldarT90
May 13 2016 07:31
but the thing is i passed tutorial from git here
if tutorial worked for repository
this one shoulod work too
so its not that c9 wont work with git, it will
Jeff Gibson
@gibbymt
May 13 2016 07:32
yea that's why I'm stumped, i figure rule out unknowns and measure results. Then at least we have data to determine the issue
c9 is a platform that obscures a bit of what you're trying to do so it's hard to say ok this is purely xyz
Eldar Tinjić
@EldarT90
May 13 2016 07:35
well
doesnt matter, i want to solve it on c9, even if it takes some time
Jeff Gibson
@gibbymt
May 13 2016 07:36
that's fair, in the long term if you plan to do developer work, I'd suggest using the native command line, and atom/sublime/notepad++ while learning.

Jeff Gibson
@gibbymt
May 13 2016 07:40
I may be lurking on FCC but I was a software engineer on the backend for many years and none of our engineers use c9 so if you learn outside it it won't ruin you ;). cloud enviroment for dev is pointless if you're using docker/vm/git at scale.
Eldar Tinjić
@EldarT90
May 13 2016 07:42
yes but thats not the issue
for tutorial standpoint
its not an issue what i use, but whether i get it or not
and right now i dont get it
i can use c9 or windows or linux or whathever
i dont get the process

:point_right: algorithm no repeats please [wiki]

Problem Explanation:

  • This task requires us to look at each possible permutation of a string. This is best done using a recursion function. Being able to build a function which collects all permutations of a string is a common interview question, so there is no shortage of tutorials out there on how to do this, in many different code languages.
  • This task can still be daunting even after watching a tutorial. You will want to send each new use of the function 3 inputs: 1. a new string (or character array) that is being built, 2. a position in your new string that's going to be filled next, and 3. an idea of what characters (more specifically positions) from the original string have yet to be used. The pseudo code will look something like this:

    ```
    var str = ???;
    perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far){
    if(current string is finished) {
    print current string;
    }else{
    for(var i = 0; i < str.length; i++) {
    if(str[i] has not been used) {
      put str[i] into the current position;
      mark str[i] as used
      perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far)
      unmark str[i] as used because another branch in the tree for i + 1 will still likely use it;
    }
    }
    }
    }
@rudolfpablico to use jquery elements you need the document ready function.. it should be added in the code where you want all your click events to work, fetching json etc.. the ready function is the first function that is called when the dom gets ready.. in the case of your code... you can wrap the entire code inside.
$(document).ready(function(){
// all of you other codes here...
});
or you can use this to call another function.
$(document).ready(function(){
otherFunction(someparams);// call to other functions...
});
function otherFunction(someparams){
// somethings to work on...
}
})
@adityaparab as I said, every time I make "search" the page goes blank white page
Darth Skywalker
@adityaparab
May 13 2016 10:04
@rudolfpablico : Sure it does. :)
First, you have event undefined. If you notice, your search function takes only one parameter. Which is correct. But that one parameter should be an object of type Event.
So in your html change onkeydown="search(this)" to onkeyup="search(event)"
Webstandards recommend using keyup event in case of auto complete kind of searches.
Change your search function to function search(event){
Rudolf Carl Pablico
@rudolfpablico
@adityaparab done that, every time I "search" it just reloads but no "result"
Darth Skywalker
@adityaparab
from the event object, it is possible to get the keyvalue and html element that event was originated from.
To get the value of current key press, simply do
var currentKey = event.key;
to get the value of element (your input)
var value = $(event.currentTarget).val();
use this value in your query
@rudolfpablico I fixed it locally. That onkeydown is not really the way to go, better use the form's onsubmit and return false inside your function. This worked for me:
        <form onsubmit="return search(query);">
          <input type="text" placeholder="Type text here" autocomplete="on" id="query" required/>
        </form>
function search(query) {
  var url = "https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&format=json&generator=search&prop=extracts&exintro&explaintext&exsentences=1&exlimit=max&gsrsearch=" + encodeURIComponent(query.value) + "&callback=?";
  $.getJSON(url, function(item) {
    // var pages = item.query.pages;
    $.each(item.query.pages, function(index, key) {
      var query = "<div class='text-center'><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/?curid=" + key["pageid"] + "\" target=\"_blank\"> <h2>" + key["title"] + "</h2> <p> " + key["extract"] + "</p> </a> </div> ";
      $("#result").append(query);
    });
  })
  return false;
}
You should make sure you have matching opening and closing tags in your HTML. And better encodeURIComponent any input in the URL, or certain characters lead to some problems. And the +"&callback=?" is for doing JSONP instead of JSON (as CORS won't allow to call wikipedia)
Hi guys, I am really stuck on the Seek and Destroy problem. I don't even know if I am on the right track with the code below.
function destroyer(arr) {
  // Remove all the values
  var args = Array.prototype.slice.call(arguments);
  var arr2 = arr.filter(function(val) {
    for (i = 1 ; i < args.length ; i++) {
      if (arr.indexOf(args[i]) !== -1) {
        return val === args[i];
      }
    }
  });
  return arr2;
}
Blauelf
@Blauelf
May 13 2016 10:49
@rudolfpablico There are other ways to trigger jQuery to use JSONP, but that's a common one. Of course, the API has to use JSONP, too, as its answer is added to your website as a script (a somewhat insecure practice, but it gets around CORS).
When jQuery encounters a second ? in the URL, it will replace that ? in the URL with the name of a Javascript function, and the server (if aware of JSONP) will react by sending a script that calls that function with the actual data. That function will then call your callback.
Rudolf Carl Pablico
@rudolfpablico
May 13 2016 10:51
@Blauelf I tried to remove &format=json on my API and it doesn't work, tried to remove callback and replace &format=json to &format=jsonp and it doesn't work also, so this should be both on the API, I guess
var url = "https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&format=json&generator=search&prop=extracts&exintro&explaintext&exsentences=1&exlimit=max&gsrsearch=" + encodeURIComponent(val.value) + "&callback=?";
@Blauelf well, I guess it really hard to understand this
So format=json and callback=functionname are part of the API.
You could inspect the result of those calls in your browser console's network tab.
smallestCommons([1, 5]) should return a number. smallestCommons([1, 5]) should return 60. smallestCommons([5, 1]) should return 60. smallestCommons([1, 13]) should return 360360.
