:point_right: algorithm no repeats please [wiki]

Problem Explanation:

  • This task requires us to look at each possible permutation of a string. This is best done using a recursion function. Being able to build a function which collects all permutations of a string is a common interview question, so there is no shortage of tutorials out there on how to do this, in many different code languages.
  • This task can still be daunting even after watching a tutorial. You will want to send each new use of the function 3 inputs: 1. a new string (or character array) that is being built, 2. a position in your new string that's going to be filled next, and 3. an idea of what characters (more specifically positions) from the original string have yet to be used. The pseudo code will look something like this:

    ```
    var str = ???;
    perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far){
    if(current string is finished) {
    print current string;
    }else{
    for(var i = 0; i < str.length; i++) {
    if(str[i] has not been used) {
      put str[i] into the current position;
      mark str[i] as used
      perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far)
      unmark str[i] as used because another branch in the tree for i + 1 will still likely use it;
    }
    }
    }
    }
@camgarcia53 you need to separate the style and html for h2
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 14 2016 00:24
@camgarcia53 you're defining your css inside of the h2 tag
you have to put it between style tags
like:
<style>
element {
  property: value;
}
</style>
for example
then you just add the class to the element, like you did
May 14 2016 00:38
Ok so bootstrap question. Instructions are to add a div element below the h3 tag. Up to this point I had been adding my divs with the class of "row" above the relevant tag. Is there a reason it should be below, like in the example?
<div class="container-fluid"> <h3 class="text-primary text-center">jQuery Playground</h3> <div class="row"></div> </div>
May 14 2016 00:43
@jsharp001 think of your elements the same as standard html, bootstrap gives you pre defined classes to enhance them
so your h3 would be seperate from divs as they always are, except now you can add a bootstrap class of text-primary to it
Jessica Sharp
@jsharp001
May 14 2016 00:44
@chrisdav6 Ah ok. That is a helpful way to think about it. Have to address the tag, then you can add enhancers. Thanks.
both of them was working at one point and time…now all of a sudden its having issues. I would advice using a step debugger when viewing, I already have a break point set... it is a little hectic in there.
It has something to do with the ajax call itself…I know the urls are fine
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 14 2016 01:04
so you're making a synchronous call with ajax, not asynchronous
hmm ok, thats the first part i was going to look at and see if there was a race condition
Wise
@WiseNN
May 14 2016 01:05
@coymeetsworld yes, note that if you it the submit button the app will load its only when the site loads that i have this problem
@coymeetsworld its supposed to be synchronous
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 14 2016 01:05
why does it have to be synchronous?
Wise
@WiseNN
May 14 2016 01:07
because I am using the same ajax caller to call about 3 diff times, the url’s are switching, I have boolean flags that flip inside of if statements to signal the calling order
it def. needs to by synchronous
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 14 2016 01:09
you can nest your ajax calls though if you need them to happen one after the other
that would be a better option I would think, but anyways still looking at what the issue is
thats what I did for Twitch challenge btw
Wise
@WiseNN
May 14 2016 01:11
Id rather not change the calling protocol at this point, its been a very intercate process to get the flags to sync. I initially wrote it this way for the time efficiency to be somewhat desirable…but Im not sure if it was worth it. However, it was working at one point and time.
not sure what I did wrong
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 14 2016 01:12
yeah that's fine, I'm just saying for next time if you want to do asynchronous calls and need to do them in order that's how you would do it
whats good about asynchronous is that the rest of the page can load while the api calls are happening so load times get smaller
but since these projects are pretty small the difference isn't that significant
Wise
@WiseNN
May 14 2016 01:12
right…thats why i wasnt too worried
but ill def do it diff in the future
@coymeetsworld I updated the entire code…if you are still looking
hi guys is there any difference to adding a btn-primary class to a button encapsulated in <script> VS. within general html block?
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 14 2016 01:18
contained in <script> your button tag would be useless
because it would be parsed as bad javascript
Wise
@WiseNN
May 14 2016 01:19
@coymeetsworld I just copied an old versio of the script that I had from a previous load….I have a codepen…I will copy this to codepen.io for you
On "multiple jQuery Selectors" we do
$("#target1").addClass("btn-primary");
within the <script> to make button primary class. But iirc in an earlier lesson we did something similar to make a btn-primary class in html? or using bootstrap lib?
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 14 2016 01:22
ah, ok, like that you add the class just like you would put it in the element
that line is the same as something like: <element id="target1" class="btn-primary">
i need help with adding the id element on the lesson 39
One cool thing about id attributes is that, like classes, you can style them using CSS.
Here's an example of how you can take your element with the id attribute of cat-photo-element and give it the background color of green. In your style element:
cat-photo-element {
background-color: green;
}
Note that inside your style element, you always reference classes by putting a . in front of their names. You always reference ids by putting a # in front of their names.
Try giving your form, which now has the id attribute of cat-photo-form, a green background.
David Young
CamperBot
@camperbot
May 14 2016 03:35
:point_right: code formatting [wiki]
Multi line Code
```js ⇦ Type 3 backticks and then press [shift + enter ⏎] (type js or html or css)

<paste your code here>,
then press [shift + enter ⏎]

``` ⇦ Type 3 backticks, then press [enter ⏎]
Single line Code
This an inline `<paste code here>` code formatting with a single backtick(`) at start and end around the code.
Vernon Williams
@Voxenn
May 14 2016 03:35
Your view more should go before the <a href>
rphares
@rphares
May 14 2016 03:37
as you get farther, it will be much easier (all) to get help if you paste it that way. there are a lot of very skilled people in some rooms, that ignore other methods-- not because they are mean, but they cant copy and paste images, links become history so they cant access their code as easily, and its hard to read the unformatted pasted version :blush:
Marvin Andara
May 14 2016 03:39
@nguyenkhai1203 an anchor tag just makes something clickable. So to nest an anchor tag within a p its simply <p><a href = "something"> text that becomes a blue clickable link goes in here </a><p>
Hi everyone, i just want to ask
Which skills or language should I learn to create a simple website that allows people to post/blog their contents to share with other users?
Yes, i’m really new to coding. I’m currently learning front end like html, css and jquery. I know nothing about back-end world. What i want is simple: people who visit my site can create their writing contents and read others’ articles. Yes. It’s like Medium but really really simple version. Thank you
looking right now, one sec
it's fading out and back in when i click on it
also, you're setting background image and putting a foreground image in front of it
instead of changing background-image change prop('src')
$("#edit").click(function(){
  $("#image").fadeOut(500, function() {
 //   $(this).css({backgroundImage : 'url(http://1.static.s-trojmiasto.pl/zdj/c/2/132/100x70/1320882__kr.jpg)'});
$('#image').prop('src','https://placeholdit.imgix.net/~text?txtsize=33&txt=350×150&w=350&h=150');
      $(this).fadeIn(500);
ah
ok, what is the full response you're getting back from the api call
Eldar Tinjić
@EldarT90
May 14 2016 05:53
the one i copied you, basically now i get only code for any link i write
try here
you get the code, and at least its in database
now i need to write that code instead of new/yahoo.com
in order to get redirection to yahoo.com
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 14 2016 05:54
the link just shows the shortened url
Eldar Tinjić
@EldarT90
May 14 2016 05:54
yes
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 14 2016 05:54
so you wouldn't even need to parse that, just use it
oke sec
'use strict';
var express = require('express');
var app = express();
var http = require("http");
var net = require("net");
var shortURLPromise
  , short = require('short');
app.get('/new/:id', function(req, res){
 var url = req.params.id;
// connect to mongodb
short.connect('mongodb://localhost/short');
short.connection.on('error', function(error) {
  throw new Error(error);
});
// promise to generate a shortened URL.
var shortURLPromise = short.generate({
  URL : url
});
// gets back the short url document, and then retrieves it
shortURLPromise.then(function(mongodbDoc) {
  console.log('>> created short URL:');
  console.log(mongodbDoc);
  console.log('>> retrieving short URL: %s', mongodbDoc.hash);
  short.retrieve(mongodbDoc.hash).then(function(result) {
    console.log('>> retrieve result:');
    console.log(result)
    res.send(mongodbDoc.hash);
      var shortLink = mongodbDoc.hash;
  }, function(error) {
    if (error) {
      throw new Error(error);
    }
  });
}, function(error) {
  if (error) {
    throw new Error(error);
  }
});
});
app.listen(process.env.PORT || 3000, function () {
    console.log('Listening on port ' + process.env.PORT + '...');
});
@badc0ded
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
it looks like you should be adding protocol and domain here: var shortLink = mongodbDoc.hash;
Eldar Tinjić
@EldarT90
May 14 2016 06:00
thats var creted by me, shortLink
its not native related to short dependency
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 14 2016 06:00
wait, you'd set that to like 'http://domain.com/' + mongodbDoc.hash and THEN res.send(shortLink) right?
Eldar Tinjić
@EldarT90
May 14 2016 06:01
to my main domain, so https://backend-eldart90.c9users.io/110cd shold equal www.yahoo.com
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 14 2016 06:02
i'm not sure man, HelpBackEnd would probably have better help on this one
Sean DiSanti
May 14 2016 06:03
in this case i think that still puts you a step ahead of me
oh
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
googling express routing should get you there quickly though i think
@phronisis it depends on how you're tryign to do it
here are a few ways:
<style>
h1 {
  background-color: blue;
}
</style>
<script>
$('h1').css('background-color','#00F');
</script>
Hey could you advise me how to style my weather app so the black box and text are more centered? https://codepen.io/123xylem/pen/WwPKrj?editors=1010
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 14 2016 06:09
either of those should turn your h1 blue
but i suspect that's not actually what you want
i can help with YOUR implementation if you show it
taking a look @123xylem
first set your margin-right to auto also
you have margin-left set but not right
and don't give mainheading a 23% left with absolute positioning
Chris Cullen
@123xylem
May 14 2016 06:14
Yea the auto right thing works
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 14 2016 06:15
remove left on mainheading, and set positioning to relative
text and black box should then be centered
then you can play with their top/bottom to put them where you want
vertically
Chris Cullen
@123xylem
May 14 2016 06:17
THey make masive spaces between heading and box
unless position is absolute
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 14 2016 06:18
the spaces are there because you're specifying top on one and bottom on the other
Chris Cullen
@123xylem
May 14 2016 06:19
where do i specify botom?
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
but for 30 minutes i cant find
that stupid command
Chris Cullen
@123xylem
May 14 2016 06:31
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 14 2016 07:19
the background color you set on the body?
it's spanning the page because the body spans the page
if you don't want it on the whole page, put it on a div that doesn't
mixu1308
@mixu1308
May 14 2016 07:20
@badc0ded well it supposed to be dark grey, but instead it's taking on the color that I gave the footer
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 14 2016 07:20
ok, one sec
you're not closing a div that you open in the footer
mixu1308
@mixu1308
May 14 2016 07:22
@badc0ded the body's color is #666 and the footer's color is #aaa but for some reason all of the page is #aaa
Sean DiSanti
@badc0ded
May 14 2016 07:22
right, you're not closing a div that you open in the footer
the easy way to spot those is to go to inspector and hover over elements until you find somethign that highlights more onthe page than it should
in this case the footer selects the whole page
then you can drill down into that element until you find the div without a matching /div
lol, @kunwar-rahul , its the FCC gitter standard
while odd things like this happen on occasion, the general expectation for the help chats is
campers say the name and paste code,
and people give hints to let them figure it out by themselves,
at times, if there is a glitch, yes, we will share answers-- but not until we have tried to ensure that there is nothing wrong first,
as it is very, very easy to look at the right answer,
think you understand it,
and forget it a minute later
much better for learning to help people through :blush:
in this case, while his line of code is in an odd place, I've pasted his in mine and ran it successfully (thats why we have them paste code rather than screenshot)
so its a glitch of some sort shrug
very different :)
:point_right: algorithm no repeats please [wiki]
Problem Explanation:
  • This task requires us to look at each possible permutation of a string. This is best done using a recursion function. Being able to build a function which collects all permutations of a string is a common interview question, so there is no shortage of tutorials out there on how to do this, in many different code languages.
  • This task can still be daunting even after watching a tutorial. You will want to send each new use of the function 3 inputs: 1. a new string (or character array) that is being built, 2. a position in your new string that's going to be filled next, and 3. an idea of what characters (more specifically positions) from the original string have yet to be used. The pseudo code will look something like this:
    ```
    var str = ???;
    perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far){
    if(current string is finished) {
    print current string;
    }else{
    for(var i = 0; i < str.length; i++) {

    if(str[i] has not been used) {
      put str[i] into the current position;
      mark str[i] as used
      perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far)
      unmark str[i] as used because another branch in the tree for i + 1 will still likely use it;
    }

    }
    }
    }

hej all, I need some help with seek and destroy..... I can't seem to find out where I am going wrong. Been working on this one for hours.....
my code:
function destroyer(arr) {
  // Remove all the values
    var args = Array.from(arguments); //converts arguments to an array
   console.log(args);
  var firstArg = args.shift();

      console.log(firstArg);
    function isntThere(value) {
     for (var i = 0; i < args.length; ++i) {
       if (value == args[i]) {
         return true;
       } else return false;
       }
      }

  var arrNew = firstArg.filter(isntThere);

  //console.log(firstArg);
  console.log(arrNew);
   return arrNew;
  //return arr;
}

destroyer([1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3], 2, 3);
any ideas where I am going wrong, I know I can't be far off....

@WiseNN without taking a closer look, I'd guess that perhaps the data sometimes isn't arriving in time for when you render the elements, since it is asynchronous.
Stephen
@TeddyHugs
May 14 2016 10:49
But if you just take the time to learn and understand why it's being used. Then why get confused? I was stuck when I first started for about 2 months. Then I researched a little and understood why lol

@Brandon1982 Yeah, it will work, but the ID has to exactly match what the challenge has. Even having a period or any other characters will make it incorrect.
