Jason Shoemaker

px is very precise....em is relative
@david-gagne could you copy and paste your html to a pastebin(.com) ?
Mike Ackerman
@mikeack
May 15 2016 00:33
@kutsuya1 @david-gagne as a heads up, em (which is ems) refer to the default rendering of HTML that your browser has. For example, if your browser’s default font size is 16 then 1em is equal to 16. So, 1.5em would be 1.5 times 16

    margin-bottom: -25px;
    text-align: center;
  }

  .box {
    border-style: solid;
    border-color: black;
    border-width: 5px;
    text-align: center;
  }

  .yellow-box {
    background-color: yellow;
    padding: 10px;
  }

  .red-box {
    background-color: red;
    padding-top: 40px;
    padding-right: 20px;
    padding-bottom: 20px;
    padding-left: 40px;
  }

  .green-box {

Dylan Zitzmann

well JSON aside... shouldn't i be able to var something = 0; function(){ something = "something else"};
and console.log(something) //"something else"
Jason Shoemaker
@kutsuya1
May 15 2016 01:05
scope? Is the something in the anon function the same something declared earlier?
maybe print to screen before logging it
@dtzitz ^^
Dylan Zitzmann
@dtzitz
May 15 2016 01:09
print to screen?
right, so in the basic example above shouldn't, since i didn't var something, shouldn't the compiler go up the scope chain
or w/e it's called
Marvin Andara
@babycakez
May 15 2016 01:10
@dtzitz you can make a function that takes the parameter and call it inside your son function
json*
Dylan Zitzmann
@dtzitz
May 15 2016 01:12
what I am trying to accomplish is storing the zip code outside the .getJSON cause I am going to need it for the openweather api
or should I just call to openweather API in the .done() scope....
that would work
Marvin Andara
@babycakez
May 15 2016 01:14
@dtzitz JSON function{ functionname(var to pass in) } new function(variable that you passed){ do stuff in here with that variable }
@dtzitz maybe its not practical but it should work I think

ok, so i wrap the whole think in an IIFE or whatever why isn't the JS traversing the scope tree up?
I have to pass the var in for it to close over it?

if the var is not defined in local it goes up to the scope that the function is in, if it's an IIFE that, if it's global then that

@bendjmiller222 you don't need to reference the css at the top of your HTML on codepen
in fact, you don't need the doctype or the body tag either
by referencing your own css, codepen can't use it's own CSS box
where you added your bg.
so if you take out your link to your stylesheet at the top it should work

@gdiaz1410 glad to hear
@bendjmiller222 right, also just a heads up, if you want to use bootstrap or jQuery you add them in the settings of codepen, not in your html
you can click the settings button at the top, then CSS and quick-add Bootstrap
then click Javascript and quick-add bootstrap and/or jQuery as you prefer

Hey guys, I need some help extending a blue <div> element past a white one. Right now, it just gets cut off and doesn't look great. Is there a way to put some sort of invisible element that can extend the blue div element a little bit more? I can achieve this by adding <p>asdf</p> to the end, but I want to be able to do this without adding text at the bottom http://codepen.io/TheIcyStar/pen/VaNrMN
Margin and padding both do not add extra space after the white box.

@TamiDev between the button tags you need to put Submit
the text between the button tags is what you will see in the button
@c0987k you need to put the class you want to add with addClass inside parenthesis
i.e. addClass("animated"), for example

I'm running into a few problems with my personal portfolio: http://codepen.io/ushik/pen/NNmXBz?editors=1000

Why am I not seeing more bullets under "What I can offer to you"?
Also, how do I make my form elements under each other instead of beside each other?

Jeff
@meankraken
May 15 2016 05:25
@ush19 You don't have anything inside your <li> elements, and your list style type is none, so no bullets.
For the form elements, just add a <br/> after the end of each one, or use CSS to style them as display:block

Susheel Palakurthi

@meankraken but that float:left isn't affecting the bullets, it only applies to my image and the text to the left of it

@Sweetcake93
May 15 2016 05:34

@coymeetsworld

<link href="https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Lobster" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">

<style>
.red-text {
color: red;
}

h2 {
font-family: Lobster, Monospace;
}

p {
font-size: 16px;
font-family: Monospace;
}
img .smaller-image {
width: 100px;

</style>

<h2 class="red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>

<img src="https://bit.ly/fcc-relaxing-cat">

<p class="red-text">Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>

Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 15 2016 05:34
so @Sweetcake93 you need to define the smaller-image class to your img tag
like how you gave h2 and p the red-text class
Jeff
@meankraken
May 15 2016 05:35
@ush19 if your CSS file, you have a float:left on all of your <li> elements
Coy Sanders

but in general if you know that a tag will always have a specific style, then you can use the tag name as a css selector

but things like ids and classes you would apply if you want to do it on different tags and/or not necessarily all of them

@TheCraftedDylan here you are selecting the h2 element and then you style it. You can also select classes, a dot is used like: .class{styling}, and ids, a # is used: #id{styling}

Susheel Palakurthi

May 15 2016 06:20

Also, one of the goals was to: Your a element should have the anchor text of "cat photos".

the anchored text should be after the link <a href = "#"> cat photos</a>

thus making cat photos a link to the website http://freecatphotoapp.com

So here's my almost done yet simple looking personal portfolio:

http://codepen.io/ushik/pen/NNmXBz?editors=1000

I have a few questions:

1) Is it possible to link my dropdown menu to the different sections in my portfolio in code pen? Like About me to about me, etc.
2) In my forms, when I type in something in the message box, it appears in the middle. How do I change it so that text begins to type out from the beginning top?
3) How do I change my social media buttons such that they link to my social media accounts? (Basically how do I make linked buttons?)

h1 {
font-size: 30px;
}
Create a second p element with the following kitty ipsum text: Purr jump eat the grass rip the couch scratched sunbathe, shed everywhere rip the couch sleep in the sink fluffy fur catnip scratched.

Inside the same <style> tag that contains your red-text class, create an entry for p elements and set the font-size to 16 pixels (16px).

Note
Due to browser implementation differences, you may need to be at 100% zoom to pass the tests on this challenge.

Also, please do not add a class attribute to your new p element.

You need 2 p elements with Kitty Ipsum text.
Make sure each of your p elements has a closing tag.
Your p element should contain the first few words of the provided additional kitty ipsum text.
Do not add a class attribute to the second p element.
Between the style tags, give the p elements font-size of 16px. Browser and Text zoom should be at 100%.

Use the Bootstrap Grid to Put Elements Side By Side
Bootstrap uses a responsive grid system, which makes it easy to put elements into rows and specify each element's relative width. Most of Bootstrap's classes can be applied to a div element.

Here's a diagram of how Bootstrap's 12-column grid layout works:

an image illustrating Bootstrap's grid system

Note that in this illustration, the col-md- class is being used. Here, md means medium, and is a number specifying how many columns wide the element should be. In this case, the column width of an element on a medium-sized screen, such as a laptop, is being specified.

In the Cat Photo App that we're building, we'll use col-xs-, where xs means extra small (like an extra-small mobile phone screen), and is the number of columns specifying how many columns wide the element should be.

Put the Like, Info and Delete buttons side-by-side by nesting all three of them within one <div class="row"> element, then each of them within a <div class="col-xs-4"> element.

The row class is applied to a div, and the buttons themselves can be nested within it.

@vishalvsr it should begin like this essentially

<div class = "row">

<div class = "col-xs-4">

<button class = ...>
</div> this is to end the <div class = "col-xs-4">
...
</div> this is to end the <div class = "row">

what you're doing is making the button classes in a row with all of them being nested in a row class and then each according to the Bootstrap sizing classes to follow into a extra small columns

@quekzhongrui You did it correctly but you just have to write the first few words of the given text of "Purr jump eat the grass rip the couch scratched sunbathe, shed everywhere rip the couch sleep in the sink fluffy fur catnip scratched."

Hi!
I'm working on the first few jquery tutorials
and i can't seem to get past this
<script>
$(document).ready(function() {
$("button").addClass("animatedbounce");
});
</script>
the question is

Just add this code inside your document ready function:

$("button").addClass("animated bounce");

did I add the code in the wrong place?
rphares

how
rphares
@rphares
May 15 2016 08:25
@quekzhongrui , it wants you to use a class
you should make a class called .pink-text in you <style> section,
give it the color pink,
and then apply it to the h1
<element class = "class-name">
in yours, you have given the h1 element the color pink--
   h1{ // THIS shouldn't be h1. thats the element. this should be the class
     color: pink;
    }

hi, for this question: jQuery uses CSS Selectors to target elements. target:nth-child(n) css selector allows you to select all the nth elements with the target class or element type.

Here's how you would give the third element in each well the bounce class:

$(".target:nth-child(3)").addClass("animated bounce");

Make the second child in each of your well elements bounce. You must target the children of element with the target class.

why is this not working?
$(".well:nth-child(2)").addClass("animated bounce");
Nicholas Johnson

its hard to understand, im using this http://www.w3schools.com/cssref/tryit.asp?filename=trycss3_nth-child to try things out atm. if you use p:nth-child(3) for example. it will be different if you then encapsule the 4 p's in a div
ooooh
i think i get it
for example, p:nth-child(2), will tarvet every p in the entire documents which is the 2nd child of something
Ok, I solved it. There was some miss-spelling or bad syntax. when i copy pasted the example and switched the numbers it worked... :P at least i got to understand how nth-child works haha, thanks for the help @aroding

@rona-lyn, generally, if you press Ctrl and 0 together when you are in a browser window, it sets the browser's zoom to 100%. Also, pressing Ctrl and - or Ctrl and + decreases or increases the zoom respectively.

you dont need "" around "blue" in the css, @quekzhongrui (NOT color: "blue"; remove the quotes)

you have two classes, "pink-text" and "blue-text" , but they can all be in the same set of ""

Change Text Inside an Element Using jQuery

Using jQuery, you can change the text between the start and end tags of an element. You can even change HTML markup.

jQuery has a function called .html() that lets you add HTML tags and text within an element. Any content previously within the element will be completely replaced with the content you provide using this function.

Here's how you would rewrite and emphasize the text of our heading:

$("h3").html("<em>jQuery Playground</em>");

jQuery also has a similar function called .text() that only alters text without adding tags. In other words, this function will not evaluate any HTML tags passed to it, but will instead treat it as text you want to replace with.

Change the button with id target4 by emphasizing its text.

@quekzhongrui First you missed out on the id = on your h1 element. Second theres no need for the or operator.
Brendan Kinahan
@BKinahan
May 15 2016 13:07
@quekzhongrui three errors: color:organe; is a typo. You don't need or on the line before that style declaration. Multiple classes are added to an element by class="class1 class2 class3" and not class="class1 class2" "class3"
forestfriend
@forestfriend
May 15 2016 13:08
@BKinahan The orange-text is an id not a class. XD I think.
Brendan Kinahan
@BKinahan
May 15 2016 13:08
ah, right, four errors :)
saw that one but forgot about it.
@forestfriend I made it work in the code by changing it to a class rather than checking the instructions, oops :P
I m not able to understand the problem

@sajal333 You are supposed to put your <a> tags in a <p> element with "View more "
Thats what "nesting" means. Putting the <a> tags inside the <p> tags.
