@ffranc It goes in the style tag, with the rest of the CSS rules
@ffranc But don't you need to make a smaller-image class?

@epicsharp I don't see my variables listed there anywhere.

@epicsharp are global variables you define with $ not listed there?
Caleb Sharp
@calebissharp
May 16 2016 00:02
@NEETWizardJanus Do you mean CSS, or are you using Sass?
@NEETWizardJanus Because Sass is transpiled to CSS, so all of your variables get replaced with their actual values
NEETWizardJanus
@NEETWizardJanus
May 16 2016 00:03
@epicsharp ... I'm not sure. I think I set it to SCSS. Do I have to specifically look for ways to debug with off-shoots of CSS?
Caleb Sharp
@calebissharp
May 16 2016 00:04
@NEETWizardJanus I don't know if there is a way to debug SCSS variables. You could try and look it up on StackOverflow though. Sorry I couldn't help more.

do I need to learn CSS before bootstrap?
Caleb Sharp
@calebissharp
May 16 2016 00:07
@ffranc Oh, I know what you mean. You need to give your img tag the class attribute with the value of smaller-image. This adds that class to that element.
So like this: <img class="smaller-image" src="...">
@NEETWizardJanus Bootstrap is built on CSS, so it would certainly be helpful, but no, I don't think it would be a requirement.
@NEETWizardJanus You don't have to understand how a car works to drive it, but it helps to know if your car stops working
I personally would recommend learning CSS first

Caleb Sharp
@calebissharp
May 16 2016 00:11
@NEETWizardJanus It looks like you can use the @debug directive in SCSS to display variables or text, in case you were wondering. @debug $variable-name

is it normal to spend 18 hours trying to learn stuff and have no progress? I've done C++ before and HTML and a bunch of other stuff, but I can't even get a polygon to appear where I want it on the page, or figure out where the hell the debug errors are visible.
I actually spent a day before that with also nothing to show for it.
Caleb Sharp
@calebissharp
May 16 2016 00:17
@NEETWizardJanus I think it depends on the person. Different people learn things in different ways. Remember that C++ is a very different language then the languages of the web.
@NEETWizardJanus In what way are you trying to make a polygon appear? With JavaScript? Or an HTML element with a CSS class attached?
And debug errors should show up in the devtools console.
NEETWizardJanus
@NEETWizardJanus
May 16 2016 00:19
@epicsharp that devtools console is a maze. maybe because I'm viewing a page on codepen.io so there's loads of extra stuff.

Hey guys I was wondering how to go about using regex to extract specific values from a string?

For example:

var str = `<script type='text/javascript'>
if (!true) { var arr=[];}
arr.push({ 'id': '537967591' });
</script>
<script type='text/javascript' src='img.jpg></script>`;

How would the regex expression look like to extract the value stored in id and the src? 537967591 and img.jpg

like this

<link href="https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Lobster" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">

color: red;

h2 {
font-family: Lobster, Monospace;

Move <img src="https://bit.ly/fcc-relaxing-cat"> to below the h2 tag, (<h2>), not rule in your stylesheet. Don't touch anything else.
NEETWizardJanus
@NEETWizardJanus
May 16 2016 00:23
@epicsharp well I wanted to change the layout of it in JS, and maybe make the code more compact, since 84 <div> classes in HTML is a bit insane, and all the CSS ones as well.
Caleb Sharp
@calebissharp
May 16 2016 00:23
@ffranc Then, change <img src="https://bit.ly/fcc-relaxing-cat"> to be <img src="https://bit.ly/fcc-relaxing-cat" class="smaller-image">
@NEETWizardJanus You're definitely right about that
@NEETWizardJanus You could try and create divs dynamically using jquery. (In a for loop or something)
NEETWizardJanus
@NEETWizardJanus
May 16 2016 00:25
@epicsharp I don't even know which between CSS or JS runs first.
since the CSS has to access the <div>s that JS is supposed to create
Caleb Sharp
@calebissharp
May 16 2016 00:26
@NEETWizardJanus The rules will always be there. It's up to the browser to make sure that the rules are applied to those divs. Remember, the browser renders the page many times a second. So you're CSS rules will apply to those elements no matter when they are created.

I don't understand the code I've found. this one creates rounded bars but I don't see anywhere it specifies the shape it's creating. only the dimensions. Another one I found creates hexagons merely by specifying <div class="hexagon one"> and yet when I do the same it doesn't work. I feel so retarded at everything I look at. http://codepen.io/miguelfondeur/pen/vGbKRK
Caleb Sharp
@calebissharp
May 16 2016 00:30
To be honest, I don't even understand quite how that works
Also, the hexagon and one are separate classes. It would probably be better to use id instead of class for the numbers though

Caleb Sharp
@calebissharp
May 16 2016 00:31
@ffranc You're welcome. Good luck with your coding!
@FireAntJoe I think that it would depend on what the code is actually doing. And you also need to think about the audience you're targeting. A seasoned developer of 10 years+ would probably be able to understand what's going on without comments, but somebody who's just learning might need them as a reminder.

@epicsharp well he selects the hexagons both individually as well as all of them, so class="hexagon seven" takes less space than class="hexagon" id="seven"
Caleb Sharp
@calebissharp
May 16 2016 00:35
@NEETWizardJanus It depends on the amount of clarity he wants. I think that using id if it's only one specific element is easier to understand

May 16 2016 01:32
@epicsharp NOPE. failed

You don't need to put it in calc(), because you're not calculating anything

body {
background-color: black;

yeah I learned it lol
because as the web moves on browser venders take their time adapting, so compatibility becomes n issue, hence all the version of css
just like all the diff versions of anything else compatibility
css4 coming soon dont worry css3 will still work lol

using CSS I guess.
you can force changes to size to fit screen
and match the look ur looking for
it will adjust to browser size based off break points
and not clip you elements
its called responsive web design

"Be sure to delete all trailing comment tags, i.e. -->."
What does that mean?
thanks!

@gdiaz1410 Do you have a link to the challenge? In bootstrap, rows and columns are always in divs, so I think your <img> shouldn't have a 'col-xs-4' class - col-xs-4 should be in a div
and then you would put the img in that div
xalvarvdox

i did but the check mark is still in read and of course the comments will become into code itseld :O

can someone explain what the button class of target does? I try noticing what it does but can't really see

@gdiaz1410 I think 'target' is used later in a jQuery challenge
otherwise don't know yet.

@kutsuya1 I think so too. I guess I'll have to wait and see!

May 16 2016 05:19
It's used later in jQuery challenge @gdiaz1410. But the target button is basically an example of somebody pointing directions to another person... It's kind of like that. Later in jQuery Playground (as the jQuery challenges are known) you will have to play around with them alot to get the right coding :) Unless you're lazy.

@elysayoti What seems to be the problem?
Start with $("button")... we should add the class "animated" to it
elysayoti

May 16 2016 05:27
@kutsuya1 $("button ,.btn, #target1").addclass("animated shake");
});
Jason Shoemaker

I broke it down for each element. Here is one example: $("button").addClass("animated");
now do something simlar for .btn & #target1
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 16 2016 05:29
yeah you need to create 3 separate selectors @elysayoti

that was the requirement at least a month ago it was, i thought
never looked back to see if instructions changed, didn't get an email or anything saying it

see alot of people rushing things, not going to do them any good in the long run

i used the minimax algorithm, took me a bit to understand how it worked but even longer on how to put it in my code
w/o taking it from someone else that is
I only looked at pseudocode and someones implementation in ruby, which didn't help except for one or two things

yeah @Nejohnson88, i guess what I would do is just prevent the algorithm from traversing too far down the tree
or maybe skip nodes, idk it would be an interesting topic to explore
i would still like to use my algorithm with reductions over using just a random number generator or something which would be way to easy to beat
although i guess i could add that too
have easy, medium, hard, impossible, easy being completely random choices
medium and hard implementing minimax but doing something like skip nodes to lesser degrees
and impossible be full implementation

@alkalas you just add one class on addClass function
the idea is a button with class .btn and id #target1 will get all 3 of those selectors applied to it

:point_right: algorithm no repeats please [wiki]

Problem Explanation:

  • This task requires us to look at each possible permutation of a string. This is best done using a recursion function. Being able to build a function which collects all permutations of a string is a common interview question, so there is no shortage of tutorials out there on how to do this, in many different code languages.
  • This task can still be daunting even after watching a tutorial. You will want to send each new use of the function 3 inputs: 1. a new string (or character array) that is being built, 2. a position in your new string that's going to be filled next, and 3. an idea of what characters (more specifically positions) from the original string have yet to be used. The pseudo code will look something like this:

    ```
    var str = ???;
    perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far){
    if(current string is finished) {
    print current string;
    }else{
    for(var i = 0; i < str.length; i++) {
    if(str[i] has not been used) {
      put str[i] into the current position;
      mark str[i] as used
      perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far)
      unmark str[i] as used because another branch in the tree for i + 1 will still likely use it;
    }
    }
    }
    }
1) You're document.ready function was inside your if so, if the user doesn't allow the browser to share their location, the code bombs.
2) You had figureOut function which sets the data on the page. That function was never called.
