I need help with: "Between the style tags, give the p elements font-size of 16px. Browser and Text zoom should be at 100%." there are two parts to this and I do not know which one I am going wrong with

@godfather93x when you define a class you need to put a dot before the name
godfather93x
@godfather93x
May 17 2016 00:05
so like ."red-text"
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 17 2016 00:05

@coymeetsworld

.red-text to define, red-text to assign it like you do in the h2 tag which is fine
i.e. remove the dot when you assign it

its in Change the Font Size of an Element
this step is failing "Between the style tags, give the p elements font-size of 16px. Browser and Text zoom should be at 100%.
"
it has two parts do not know which one is failing
I did this: <p {font-size: 16px;}> Purr jump eat the grass rip the couch scratched sunbathe, shed everywhere rip the couch sleep in the sink fluffy fur catnip scratched.</p>
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 17 2016 00:08
you'll actually want to put that font size part inside the style tags, not inside the p tag @Madhavi01
like where your red-text class definition is
Madhavi
@Madhavi01
May 17 2016 00:10
like <style>
.red-text {
color: red;}
.font-size{ size: 16px;
}
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 17 2016 00:10
you don't want to create a class called font-size
you don't need a class since you want to style all p tags, you can just use p as your selector
Madhavi
@Madhavi01
May 17 2016 00:10
ok how about this:
<style>
.red-text {
color: red;
}
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 17 2016 00:10
and instead of size: 16px; you want to make font-size 16 pixels

@lmakiwa1 what was the solution?
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 17 2016 00:11
see the example above?
where they do it for h1 and make it 30?
instead you want to make it p and 16
same format
Madhavi

May 17 2016 00:11
ok will try
godfather93x
@godfather93x
May 17 2016 00:11
What about for the next step? @coymeetsworld

<style>
.red-text {
color: red;
}

font-size: 16px

</style>

<h2 class="red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>

<p class="red-text">Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>

<p font-size= 16px>Purr jump eat the grass rip the couch scratched sunbathe, shed everywhere rip the couch sleep in the sink fluffy fur catnip scratched.</p>

I'm trying to make the 2nd paragraph to 16 font size

look back at the example and see how to apply a font-size style to a tag
h1 {
  font-size: 30px;
}
that css style will make all h1 elements have a font-size of 30 pixels, you don't need to make a class or anything
godfather93x
@godfather93x
May 17 2016 00:12
so like this?

<style>
.red-text {
color: red;
}

font-size: 16px;

</style>

<h2 class="red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>

<p class="red-text">Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>

</style>
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 17 2016 00:13
yes you needed to clean up the <p> tag so thats good, but look @ the example again @godfather93x
on how to create a style for p
actually i think you and @Madhavi01 are working on same problem
thats good @Madhavi01 but font-size doesn't have a selector
you need to give it the p selector, look @ the example

@lmakiwa1 - if you look in your code editor window, you'll see a couple things highlighted in red... those are problems.

  • Your "paper-plane" code should look like this: <i class="fa fa-paper-plane"></i> - you have your form element stuck in the middle there. Actually, you have that in the wrong place - the submit button is down near the end of the code section - the <button type="submit">... that is where you should be adding that paper-plane icon and the classes for btn btn-primary
  • the closing </form> tag is highlighted - that is probably because of the problem with the paper-plane element above?
  • the last thing is that form-control class - look for the form element with <input type="text"... and add that class there.

That's a couple things - if you try to fix that, see if you can get some of the other tests to pass, and then we'll look at what's left? Probably best just to reset the code and re-do those tasks - they are simple enough.

@tuliodnw - I don't know what the template is that they give you for that, but I have about 4 lines of code. Basically, you have binary strings that should translate to characters, that is, they represent character codes. All you have to do is get the decimal equivalent for each binary value, and then use "String.fromCharCode()" with that value to convert it to a character.

I've been trying to begin with a fixed navbar but the navbar auto-resizes instead of staying the same size.
I can't figure out why my page in codepen.io won't allow me to scroll.

Can anyone lend an ear?

@misterdicker - your page has some big problems... CodePen uses a template-based system to generate the page, so your declaration of a <body> element in the HTML panel is not correct... That might be the source of several problems...
Patrick Dicker
@misterdicker
May 17 2016 00:51
I thought that the <body> element is good use of HTML syntax. Should I just be using divs with unique IDs?
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
May 17 2016 00:52
@misterdicker - in your own editing / hosting environment, you need to declare the <body> element, but CodePen already has that in the template - so you should not have that, nor <html>, <head> or <style> in the CodePen HTML panel.
Patrick Dicker
@misterdicker
May 17 2016 00:54
Good to know. I took out the useless body element but I think my navbar is causing my problem. Still no scrolling function
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
May 17 2016 00:54
@misterdicker - also, embedded style attributes in the HTML code are not recommended. They work, but it is hard to maintain. Better to define CSS classes and use those to style the elements. (Of course, what you're doing might be transitional, but it is not the way to go.)
@misterdicker - let me reload the page and see what's going on now.

Freecodecamp kinda implied that the style="" function in Bootstrap was its main advantage.

Should I just scrap all of my added style elements and favor of CSS? If so what do i use Bootstrap for?

May 17 2016 01:01
@misterdicker - Bootstrap is a CSS library of classes (primarily classes) that you can add to your HTML elements using class=as you have in your navbar declaration - those are Bootstrap classes. You can define your own classes to add CSS styles that are different from bootstrap, or you can ignore bootstrap altogether and use your own CSS styles (probably would end up doing a lot of the same things that Bootstrap provides, but you could do it all on your own.) Other people opt to use other things, there are other CSS libraries, you could use flexbox for layout, etc. I don't know if that answers your question?
Patrick Dicker

did you try wrapping your anchor around the paragraph?

@misterdicker your #top (I guess in the navbar) is starting off with illegal HTML - you cannot have a div embedded in an anchor tag.

@misterdicker - that #top anchor is causing the problem - I just replaced everything between the <a href="#top"> and the </a> with the string "REPLACED TEXT", reloaded the page, and now it scrolls...

:point_right: algorithm no repeats please [wiki]

Problem Explanation:

  • This task requires us to look at each possible permutation of a string. This is best done using a recursion function. Being able to build a function which collects all permutations of a string is a common interview question, so there is no shortage of tutorials out there on how to do this, in many different code languages.
  • This task can still be daunting even after watching a tutorial. You will want to send each new use of the function 3 inputs: 1. a new string (or character array) that is being built, 2. a position in your new string that's going to be filled next, and 3. an idea of what characters (more specifically positions) from the original string have yet to be used. The pseudo code will look something like this:

    ```
    var str = ???;
    perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far){
    if(current string is finished) {
    print current string;
    }else{
    for(var i = 0; i < str.length; i++) {
    if(str[i] has not been used) {
      put str[i] into the current position;
      mark str[i] as used
      perm(current position in original string, what's been used in original string, current string build thus far)
      unmark str[i] as used because another branch in the tree for i + 1 will still likely use it;
    }
    }
    }
    }
Sometimes you want to add a elements to your website before you know where they will link.
This is also handy when you're changing the behavior of a link using jQuery, which we'll learn about later.
Replace the value of your a element's href attribute with a #, also known as a hash symbol, to turn it into a dead link.
Hey guys. I’m having serious difficulty with CSS and bootstrap and ive been trying this for a couple hours. I’m trying to use navbar-fixed-top to make my navbar stay at the top, but its now obstructing the content below. Any ideas at all?
Andres Bravo
@OmniBravo
May 17 2016 05:05
whats your code?
I was thinking about just adding a top-margin to the actual content, but i know that wont be responsive. I even tried making a dummy non fixed navbar but that isnt working either
Andres Bravo
@OmniBravo
May 17 2016 05:09
do you have a <nav> </nav>
Max Cady
@vegemouse
May 17 2016 05:09
No I was just using bootstrap classes
Where would <nav></nav> go?
charles-cst
@Charles-cst
May 17 2016 05:12
@vegemouse you can think change the opacity to display the nav ,or you can change it by javascript
Max Cady
@vegemouse
May 17 2016 05:14
well the nav is displaying correctly, its just on top of the Div below it.
the div container below isnt displaying correctly
charles-cst
@Charles-cst
May 17 2016 05:15
@vegemouse you set the position by absolute ,then set the top
top value is the nav's height
Andres Bravo
@OmniBravo
May 17 2016 05:15
try this body {
background-color: #93FFBB;
margin:150px
}
Max Cady
but if i do that it wont be responsive will it?
Rada
May 17 2016 05:16
Hey guys, please help me figure out what's wrong with lines 6-17 of Javascript. They are supposed to say "when you click magnifying glass label, run search(). when you click enter, run search()." But only clicking the label actually works. Clicking enter instead runs only half of the function.
Max Cady
@vegemouse
May 17 2016 05:17
Thanks @omnibravo i tried that but i want to make sure its responsive. if i set the margin to pixels it would differ depending on device size because the height of the navbar will change
its just the name of the algorithm, its used to compute best possible moves in a 2 player game that both players are competing in
like chess or checkers or tic-tac-toe
its pretty interesting actually so i didn't mind learning and implementing it, it was pretty fun in the end
didn't look at any source code either, except some ruby but that didn't help me too much
karpov was the top chess player before kasparov(karpov taught kasparov) karpov actually was beaten by kasparov multiple but it was concealed due to the soviet union being corrupt
@daxdax89 You can use font-awesome which is part of the bootstrap framework.
@OMahonyD true i forgot about that, remind me how i import it?
Darth Skywalker
@adityaparab
May 17 2016 08:11
@OMahonyD : font-awesome is not a part of bootstrap. glyphicons is a part of bootstrap
@daxdax89 :
General syntax is
<button type="button" class="btn btn-default" aria-label="Check Mark">
    <span class="glyphicon glyphicon-check" aria-hidden="true"></span>
</button>
in class attribute of the span tag, you can replace glyphicon-check class with the one you desire.
This page lists all the supported icon classes - http://getbootstrap.com/components/#glyphicons
Could it be that your div has no dimensions ?
You gave it no height or width so it has no background to show
never mind ignore what i just wrote ...
@Snakeyh
Could it be that your div has no dimensions ?
div tag expands automatically to contain it's contents if no dimension were specified or if's positioning is different from natural flow in which elements are rendered. (like position: absolute/fixed/static)
So that is not likely the problem here.
jQuery is all about following the left side if it gives you a new command and just type it out exactly the way it is. Except change the lettering and words to what it says to get the GREEN tick underneath :)
But in real life. You just have to research it :)
Robert
okay. But here. I just do not get your explanation
What do you mean ?
@TeddyHugs
Stephen
@TeddyHugs
May 17 2016 11:25
It's fine. Basically when it gives you a new command on the left hand side. When you are reading through it. it will give you a new line of code to input into the actual code. So for example you @castillozavala
You had a few errors on that <script> On the left above those BIG GREEN TICKS for the Tasks to complete. It would have given you a new line of code to use :)
Change Text Inside an Element Using jQuery
Stephen
@TeddyHugs
May 17 2016 11:34
$("h3").html("<em>jQuery Playground</em>");
This is the new coding right?
Robert
@castillozavala
May 17 2016 11:34
yep
correct
Stephen
@TeddyHugs
May 17 2016 11:35
So you type that out. And change the h3 to h4, and the jQuery Playground to #target4
Robert
@castillozavala
May 17 2016 11:35
ok
Stephen
@TeddyHugs
May 17 2016 11:36
So your new coding should look like this,
$("#target4").html("<em>#target4</em>");
That's what I mean by typing it out and doing changing the words to it so you get that BIG GREEN Tick at the bottom
:point_right: challenge escaping literal quotes in strings [wiki]
Escaping Literal Quotes in Strings
In JavaScript, you can escape a quote from considering it as an end of string quote by placing a backslash \ in front of the quote.
"Alan said, \"Peter is learning JavaScript\"."
This signals JavaScript that the following quote is not the end of the string, but should instead appear inside the string.
However another option is to alternate quotation marks if possible. 'Alan said, "Peter is learning JavaScript"' this would also work.
:pencil: read more about challenge escaping literal quotes in strings on the FCC Wiki
Make your text input a required field, so that your user can't submit the form without completing this field.
Then try to submit the form without inputing any text. See how your HTML5 form notifies you that the field is required?
@e0x this statement is wrong
<p class="red-text" style="font-size:16px;">
you need to pull out the style for p in a separate css rule
p {
font-size: 16px;
}
