Use Clockwise Notation to Specify the Padding of an Element

<style>
.injected-text {
margin-bottom: -25px;
text-align: center;
}

.box {
border-style: solid;
border-color: black;
border-width: 5px;
text-align: center;
}

.yellow-box {
background-color: yellow;
padding: 20px 40px 20px 40px;
}

.red-box {
background-color: red;
padding: 20px 40px 20px 40px;
}

.green-box {
background-color: green;
padding: 20px 40px 20px 40px;
}
</style>

<h5 class="injected-text">margin</h5>

<div class="box yellow-box">
<h5 class="box red-box">padding</h5>
<h5 class="box green-box">padding</h5>
</div>

.red-box {
background-color: red;
padding: 20px 40px 20px 40px;

JasonXiao2007
@JasonXiao2007

k

Instead of specifying an element's padding-top, padding-right, padding-bottom, and padding-left properties, you can specify them all in one line, like this:

padding: 10px 20px 10px 20px;

These four values work like a clock: top, right, bottom, left, and will produce the exact same result as using the side-specific padding instructions.

Use Clockwise Notation to give the ".green-box" class a padding of 40px on its top and left side, but only 20px on its bottom and right side.

Sina
@sinaal
May 21 2016 02:40

Truncate a string (first argument) if it is longer than the given maximum string length (second argument). Return the truncated string with a ... ending.

Note that inserting the three dots to the end will add to the string length.

However, if the given maximum string length num is less than or equal to 3, then the addition of the three dots does not add to the string length in determining the truncated string.

Sammich
@YOURsammich
May 21 2016 02:42
So i suppose you want something like str.subtring(0,MaxStringLength)
And than add the dots to the string like str += '...'
*str.substring

and add '...' to the end

the third test requires
@tommygebru

truncateString("A-tisket a-tasket A green and yellow basket", "A-tisket a-tasket A green and yellow basket".length) should return "A-tisket a-tasket A green and yellow basket"

this seems to contradict what i gather from the above description.

my understanding of the above description is that it should return
"A-tisket a-tasket A green and yellow bas..."

Sammich

@ffranc Well for starters when setting a class don't have more than one class="" inside the HTML tag, there should only ever be one

no, but you can try formatting your code a little better perhaps to see where the issue is
have one div on one line each, indent as you're nesting
should be easier to see the problem that way
looks a little messy, hard to read that way so easy for it to have errors

you need to make a class and you need to apply the class,
the first part, you've done
to apply a class, you write in the html
<element class = "class-name"> for example
in this case, you could make the p red by writing
<p class = "red-text">
(but i dont think you are supposed to change <p>... just h2 ;) )

I assume there was a problem with the actual size of the images.
A solution to that would be to use .svg images, right?

@JordanShackelford You can try using the .toFixed method with the amount of digits you would like.

And now I have been sucked into the forum black hole for a couple hours and need to break out lol
Do they want me to use the variables stored in the wordBlanks("Elephant", "Big", "ran", "quickly"); function by doing some like var madLib= myNoun + " is" + myAdjective + " and" + myVerb +myAdverb; ?
I don
I don't understand the error message
wordBlanks("dog", "big", "ran", "quickly") should contain all of the passed words separated by non-word characters (and any additional words in your madlib).
wordBlanks("cat", "little", "hit", "slowly") should contain all of the passed words separated by non-word characters (and any additional words in your madlib).
What do they want?
rphares
@rphares
May 21 2016 06:06
very close, @piesha
bt you are storing your sentence in var madLib
you arent returning var madLib so that doesn't do much good,
what var are you returning? (its at the bottom...)
(also, you've misses two spaces, i think-
one after " and"
piesha
@piesha
May 21 2016 06:08
I didn't actually implement anything like that, I just created the requested variables (myNoun) etc but I didn't understand how they wanted me to implement the madlib and neither did I understand the error msg that was supposed to help clarify the challenge
I just threw the previous example here in the chat haha
rphares
@rphares
May 21 2016 06:08
they want you to return the sentence,
var madLib= myNoun + " is" + myAdjective + " and" + myVerb +myAdverb; is close,
but... you will return result
so storing it in var MadLib is not useful
piesha
@piesha
May 21 2016 06:09
I should print it somewhere? Like an alert or console or something?
rphares
@rphares
May 21 2016 06:09
nah-
just re-assign result
right now, result = ""
its at the top of the function
so when you return, you dont get your nice sentence...
piesha
@piesha
May 21 2016 06:10
Oh! Cool! So I can edit result
rphares
@rphares
May 21 2016 06:10
var a = ""
a = "what you want";
yep :point_up:
also, though-- spaces
once you put that sentence in result, you still need to include three more spaces,
because the output would be Dog isbig andranquickly

How can i do this?
Between the style tags, give the p elements font-size of 16px. Browser and Text zoom should be at 100%.

<style>
.red-text {
color: red;
{font-size: 16px;
}
</style>

<h2 class="red-text">CatPhotoApp</h2>

<p class="red-text">Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>
<p>Purr jump eat the grass rip the couch scratched sunbathe, shed everywhere rip the couch sleep in the sink fluffy fur catnip scratched.</p>

Can someone help me with codewars kata?

function XO(str) {
    //code here
var arr=[];
var arrX=[];
var arrO=[];
var arrOthers; // not necessary

   arr.push(str.toLowerCase().split(""));
   for( var i=0; i <arr.length; i++){

if(arr[i]=='x'){
arrX=arrX.push('x');
}

else if(arr[i]=='o'){
arrO=arrO.push('o');
}
else {
arrOthers=arr[i].pop();
}
}
var arrXJoined=arrX.join('');
var arrOJoined=arrO.join('');
  if(arrXJoined.length===arrOJoined.length){
return true;
}
   else{return false;}
}

Test cases

Test.assertEquals(XO('xo'),true);
Test.assertEquals(XO("xxOo"),true);
Test.assertEquals(XO("xxxm"),false);
Test.assertEquals(XO("Oo"),false);
Test.assertEquals(XO("ooom"),false);

I only managed to pass two tests , not sure why the third resulted in true instead of false.

:point_right: css flexbox [wiki]

CSS Flexbox

CSS Flexbox allows us to easily format our HTML like you never knew was possible. With flexbox it is possible to align vertically and horizontally, easily. Like the sound of it? Yeah me too.

It is also fantastic for general layout of your website or app, it is easy to learn, supported well (in all modern browsers) and is great to work with, not to mention it doesn't take long to get to grips with at all!

Challenge Create a Class to Target with jQuery Selectors

Not every class needs to have corresponding CSS. Sometimes we create classes just for the purpose of selecting these elements more easily using jQuery.

For this we use the target class on the button elements.

Hi there bit stuck in beginning to learn jQuery. Am trying to target the same element with multiple jQuery Selectors but alas no joy.... Here is the code I have typed:-<script>
$(document).ready(function() {
$("button") .addClass(animated);
$(".btn") .addClass(shake);
$("#target1") .addClass(btn-primary);

});
</script>

Advice welcome thanks :)

Hi everyone. I couldn't get hey in the HelpJavaScript chat room so I hope you could help me :)

I'm doing the "wikipedia viewer" challenge.
When I get the JSON from wikipedia and loop through the result (4 elements: 1 string, 3 arrays with 10 string each) only four items of the arrays are processed. I'm using the "forEach" function.

The console doesn't inform about any error or advertencies.
This is the part of the code that isn't working appparently:

$.getJSON("https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=opensearch&format=json&search=" + query + "&callback=?", createResults);

    // Create ".result"s
    function createResults(result) {
        var html = '';

        var keys = Object.keys(result);

        keys.forEach(function (index) {
            html += result[3][index];
            html += result[1][index];
            html += result[2][index];
        });
    }

I've cleaned it so you don't have trouble reading it, but you cand find the full code in my pen: http://codepen.io/andrianmauricio/pen/XdLvWz

Thank you ;)

Hi, has anyone else run into this problem while running the tests for the Return Largest Numbers in Arrays exercise? I can pass the first and the third tests but the second tests does not pass and it looks like what the console is displaying are the correct results but in the wrong order. The order for the test is [27,5,39,1001] but the console is showing [27,5,39,1001]. I've run through my code as in my head and checked for mistakes but I don't see a reason for this. Now, I'm posting this here as well as in the JS help room to see if you can double check what I have done and see if I missed something. Or if this a bug that needs to be reported. Here's my code:
function largestOfFour(arr) {
  var number = 0, //variable to hold largest number from each sub-array
      largest = []; //new array to hold the largest numbers from each sub-array

  //start with the first sub-array and move on to the next at end of loop
  //end the loop when i = length of arr
  for (var i = 0; i < arr.length; i++) {
    //start with the first element in each sub-array then move on to the next
    //at end of loop, ending the loop when j = length of sub-array
    for (var j = 0; j < arr[i].length; j++) {
      //if value of arr[i][j] is greater than current value of number
      //replace current value of number with value of arr[i][j]
      if (arr[i][j] > number) {
        number = arr[i][j];
      }
    }
    largest[i] = number; //add number to results array at index i
  }
  return largest;
}

@jakefromstatefarm512 if you’re assigning an ID to the <h4> element, do this. <h4 id=“right-well”></h4>

One h4 element should have the text #right-well.

May 21 2016 14:56

@jakefromstatefarm512

would this be correct <h4 #right-well> </h4>

If you are trying to put an ID on an element, it would have to have the attribute id="right-well" to be correctly formed HTML.

abelq
@abelq
May 21 2016 14:57
@jakefromstatefarm512 you may create 2 sets of <h4></h4>.
@jakefromstatefarm512 each having one of those IDs
Ken Haduch
@khaduch
May 21 2016 14:57
@jakefromstatefarm512 - if you are just supposed to have the header with the text of #right-well, then it should go between the tags <h4></h4> as you would do a normal header.

@Coira okay, so I've created the repo and added the files just using the browser (that was easy) https://github.com/joshweaver23/joshweaver23.gihub.io; however, the page is showing 404 (https://joshweaver23.github.io/)... any thoughts?

@killjoy82
Don't put your style in the h2 elements you have to put outside :
So you have your html code :

<h2>CatPhotoApp</h2>

<p>Kitty ipsum dolor sit amet, shed everywhere shed everywhere stretching attack your ankles chase the red dot, hairball run catnip eat the grass sniff.</p>

And your css code:

<style>h2{color: blue;}</style>

Ghost

But don't mix your css code and html code, your code will be more readable
