Hiya, @5t33 ~
Wyatt
@wyattsamb
May 29 2016 00:04
so when in doubt and it doesn't go through(in a similar situation) i should add another closing div?
Agustín Covarrubias
@agucova
May 29 2016 00:05
It may work. So yeah.
rphares
@rphares
May 29 2016 00:05
@wyattsamb , mm, not the best way, though it may work--
Agustín Covarrubias
@agucova
May 29 2016 00:06
Check every div with their corresponding closing tag
rphares
@rphares
May 29 2016 00:06
the thing is, when you made the new divs, you must have thought you'd closed one, but actually the </div> was already there and belonged to another <div>
so the best way is to close things immediately when you open them, so you dont get mixed up,
and then check one by one when you do have troubles
Stee
@5t33
May 29 2016 00:06
ok so I'm on the portfolio project and for some reason codepen wont let me set a background image. My code is the same as other code I've looked up, and even works when I insert it into the cat app in the html/CSS practice cat app .
rphares
@rphares
May 29 2016 00:07
@respectTheGrind , i can tell you a hack way around it,
not the good way, though, and it'll have other results as well-
imo, its often best to get farther and then tweak, but...
Stee
@5t33
May 29 2016 00:07
I make a class in the style section, and include background: url("www.urlhere");
rphares
@rphares
May 29 2016 00:07
hmm, where are u hosting your image? @5t33 Not imgur, i hope?

@hajzso
May 29 2016 00:28

okay, to make a class, you write . and the name of the class you want,
i will make an example, called example-class @AHMukoma
Abdikadir Mukoma
@AHMukoma
May 29 2016 00:36
to do that, do i have to write it inside the "style" tag?

May 29 2016 00:37
<style>
.example-class {
color:red;
}
</style>
@AHMukoma
yep!
then, thats the first step-
(in your case, you want to name the class red-text, not example-class)
that makes the class, but--
Abdikadir Mukoma

May 29 2016 00:37
i tried that, but now the h2 element is not recognized
rphares
@rphares

we also have to tell the program which part we want to use the class on
so at the bottom, we also have to add the class to the element
i will apply my example-class to an element

From http://dev.w3.org/csswg/css-color/#hex-notation:

4 digits

This is a shorter variant of the 8-digit notation, "expanded" in the same way as the 3-digit notation is. The first digit, interpreted as a hexadecimal number, specifies the red channel of the color, where 0 represents the minimum value and f represents the maximum. The next three digits represent the green, blue, and alpha channels, respectively.

var  subtot=max+min; //Add them
  var newarr=[]; //make newarray

are you reversing that anywhere?
Ken Haduch

May 29 2016 01:32
@azeem259 - a couple things - your lowercase.replace method call is not providing a replacement string (or character, or empty string...) to replace the underscore. And @rphares is right - where are you reversing the string?
@123xylem - this: [newarr].reduce(function(prev, curr looks a little strange? why put the newarr in square brackets?

Ken Haduch
@khaduch
May 29 2016 02:04
@123xylem - I think that you are doing something that doesn't make a lot of sense, it looks like this test: if(newarr[i] == newarr[i]){ is always going to return true, but then you're subtracting an array element from an array? I don't really know what the result of that would be? And those first and second variables are not being used, not doing anything (that I can tell) with those lines of code anyway?

Ken Haduch
@khaduch
May 29 2016 02:10
@123xylem - well, I just looked at my solution, and I used Array.filter, Array.indexOf, and Array.concat() as they suggested in the lesson information. Basically, you want to find values in array1 that are not in array2, and values in array2 that are not in array1, and then jam them together. You can do it with for loops, those Array methods are handy, though.

@rphares yes, I mean I see the example portfolio and each of the part like e.g "Home", there's a different background and when I scroll to the "Portfolio" part, there's another background
I'm wondering how to make specific areas like that :)
rphares
@rphares
May 29 2016 02:50
ohhh-- you could do that a few ways-- with a <section> or a <div> and a class or ID for that part, for example... @quocanh261997
You can give any part of your page an ID or class, and set a background for it,

@Radascript oh yes, I was trying it on my end too. The reason is that because you're doing this with jQuery. transition count would work good if it was through transition effect. Let me see it again

ive been coding for alot of hours but mostly on my tribute and PP project so i most likely have alot to learn...
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 29 2016 06:23
have you ever coded before? how well do you do in Math/logic? How well do you read? How much tenacity do you have, etc
I wouldn't worry too much about making a date to when you complete this
theres alot of factors, maybe you want to spend more time making a better portfolio page, or you just get real stuck on a challenge, or you end up spending too much time in the chat rooms like me lol
Jose
@Jjmaster2010
May 29 2016 06:25
i graduated highschool just now ( a year ahead of my class) so i have alot of free time... and im really good at the above. and yes ive coded for while mow but new to FCC
@coymeetsworld honestly all of the above xD i think i saw you in one of the chats. but yeah ive been spending a couple ours on the portfolio. but i really want to make things to put in it because the PP is basically empty
lol theres nothing in it just me talking. but then again i shouldnt skip everything to work on projects. ( or should i) hahaha

oh ok, I rushed mine because I didn't have anything to show and im bad at design
but now I'm going back to most of my challenges and redesigning them. functionally the ones I did all work, but want to make them better
I only have Simon to do to get front-end but I want to actually make good stuff, so its going to take me longer. But I don't care, I don't have a hard date when I need to complete this
Jose
@Jjmaster2010
May 29 2016 06:30
yeah i suppose im in the same situation. i think ima do what you did. do the projects and then go back and forth. i know some so i could make some decent projects but i dont want to make it bad either i want it to look awesome
whats simon? @coymeetsworld
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 29 2016 06:33
its the last coding project
yeah you don't have to make your portfolio perfect @Jjmaster2010
the only reason I think its such an early project is because it does not have to use any JavaScript, can do everything with HTML and CSS
but at least it gets you acclimated to using it, youll need HTML/CSS in pretty much every challenge after that plus JavaScript
Jose
@Jjmaster2010

@Brionnaw - appreciate it!

@hubhubace
May 29 2016 06:37
@mr910 hi need some help
Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 29 2016 06:37
alot of places will want a degree @Jjmaster2010, esp a 4 year reputable school with something like Computer Science
but people have gotten jobs without it
just may be harder to do especially when you first start. When you start getting more experience it becomes a little easier.
Experience starts slowly becoming more important than background as you start working
Be wary of coding bootcamps are my advise. I know alot of people love them but I'm not buying it

Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld

but im guessing thats strictly for web development too
Jose
@Jjmaster2010
May 29 2016 06:40

Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 29 2016 06:40
it says median salary is $63k
how can they guarantee jobs with at least 60k then? seems odd...

yeah I see, also while it may take 6mos or a year, they're only saying you need 12hrs/week for a year
so its pretty much part time
feel like it needs to be more, but maybe thats just the appeal
that you don't have to quit your day job and still persue it
cost is low relative to other bootcamps it seems too

Coy Sanders
@coymeetsworld
May 29 2016 06:53
usually @alexthegreat23 you can use a hash as a local anchor to have your code go somewhere else
inside that page
like <a href="#">Click me and I go to the top of the page</a>
but more interesting is if you give the link a hash with a name, you can map it to an id of another element on the page
so like if you had something like <a href="#about">About</a> and you have further down the page this div for example: <div id="about">, clicking that link would take you straight to that div section

okay, no worries, @Csmith1990 -- a few things
you have changed the size of all the things with the class .red-text, @Csmith1990
but, only one p has that class-- AND an h2 has that class-- we dont want to change tiger size of the h2,
so instead of using the class,
we need to select just the p elements
you can write css for an element like this:
<style>
.red-text {
color: red;
}

element {
font-size: ##px;
}
</style>

the second one is nested inside a form element--
i think that should be the important thing to take form this lesson for you:
nesting is when we open an element, put something inside, and then close the element
<div class= "opened">
  <p>this text is inside the div</p>
</div>// Now i closed the div AFTER the p, so the p is nested inside the div!
@captain22
same thing with what you just did--
<form action="/submit-cat-photo">//You opened the form
  <input type="text" placeholder="cat photo URL">//you put the text input INSIDE the form
</form>//you closed the form

@alexanderkopke asked on stackoverflow and got this answer:

$.getJSON() is asynchronous. As such, it's completion callback is called some time later. Your for loop runs to the end and then when the callback is called, i is set to the end of the for loop.

Debugging may changing the timing of things.

You can fix things by embedding the loop counter in an IIFE so it will be uniquely captured for each iteration of the for loop like this:

$(document).ready(function() {
      var channels = ["OgamingSC2","sheevergaming", "ESL_SC2", "cretetion", "freecodecamp", "storbeck", "habathcx", "RobotCaleb", "noobs2ninjas"];
      for (var i = 0; i < channels.length; i++) {
          (function(index) {
            $.getJSON('https://api.twitch.tv/kraken/streams/' + channels[i] + '?callback=?', function(data) {
                if (data.stream) {
                    $('.wrapper li').eq(index).css('background-color', "blue");
                } else {
                    $('.wrapper li').eq(index).css('background-color', "red");
                }

            });
          })(i);
      }
 });

@keyurparalkar perhaps you shouldn't splice the array you are using filter on
because it reduces the size of your array and due to which the next value is skipped

@keyurparalkar or you could have also done something like this
 return removed[0].filter(function(value){
                for(var i=0;i<args.length;i++){
                if(value==args[i]){
                          return false;
                        }
                       }
                        return true;
                  });
